Abstract:Significance Organic electrode materials have shown great potential in lithium batteries in terms of easy synthesis, raw materials abundance, and environmental friendliness. However, the traditional organic electrodes typically experience single-electron reaction per active group, leading to limited specific capacities and energy densities. Herein, we report a battery chemistry of a nitroaromatic cathode, in which six-electron transfer occurs on each nitro group, resulting in an ultrahigh specific capacity and energy density, higher than all existing organic electrode materials and even most inorganic electrode materials.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials possess many advantages such as low toxicity, sustainability, and chemical/structural tunability toward high energy density. However, to compete with inorganic‐based compounds, crucial aspects such as redox potential, capacity, cycling stability, and electronic conductivity need to be improved. Herein, a comprehensive strategy on the molecular design of small organic electron‐acceptor‐molecule—hexaazatrianthranylene (HATA) embedded quinone (HATAQ) is reported. By introducing conjugated quinone moieties into the electron‐deficient hexaazatriphenylene‐derivative core, HATAQ with highly extended π‐conjugation can yield extra‐high capacity for lithium storage, delivering a capacity of 426 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1 (0.4C). At an extremely high rate of 10 A g−1 (19C), a reversible capacity of 209 mAh g−1 corresponding to nearly 85% retention is obtained after 1000 cycles. A unique network of unconventional lock‐and‐key hydrogen bonds in the solid‐state facilitates favorable supramolecular 2D layered arrangement, enhancing cycling stability. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the capacity and rate capability of HATAQ are found to be the best ever reported for organic small‐molecule‐based cathodes. These results together with density functional theory studies provide proof‐of‐concept that the design strategy is promising for the development of organic electrodes with exceptionally high energy density, rate capability, and cycling stability.

Abstract:AbstractOrganic cathode materials have attracted extensive attention because of their diverse structures, facile synthesis, and environmental friendliness. However, they often suffer from insufficient cycling stability caused by the dissolution problem, poor rate performance, and low voltages. An in situ electropolymerization method was developed to stabilize and enhance organic cathodes for lithium batteries. 4,4′,4′′‐Tris(carbazol‐9‐yl)‐triphenylamine (TCTA) was employed because carbazole groups can be polymerized under an electric field and they may serve as high‐voltage redox‐active centers. The electropolymerized TCTA electrodes demonstrated excellent electrochemical performance with a high discharge voltage of 3.95 V, ultrafast rate capability of 20 A g−1, and a long cycle life of 5000 cycles. Our findings provide a new strategy to address the dissolution issue and they explore the molecular design of organic electrode materials for use in rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Currently, lithium-ion batteries use minor metals, such as cobalt and nickel, in their cathodes and have resource, cost, and weight issues. The aim of this study is to efficiently search for high-energy-density organic cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries as alternatives to inorganic materials. New organic compounds were generated by combining two fragments that are substructures of known compounds, and their discharge curves were simulated by using high-throughput density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As a result, 460 new organic compounds were found to have theoretical energy densities higher than the average of the original fragments. This study provides a means for exploring organic materials composed of multiple fragments on a large scale.

Abstract:Organic solids are mainly composed by organic molecules interacted by Van der Waals forces, which indicates that every organic molecule can independently store electrons and counter metal ions during redox reaction in rechargeable metal-ion batteries. However, the serious dissolution problem as well as the solvent structure in electrolytes limits this universal capability for organic electrodes. In this article, a novel small-molecule organic compound namely 1,1 '-(1,4-phenylene)-bis(perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride) (2PTCDA, 125 mAh g(-1)) is intentionally designed, in order to increase the insolubility against liquid electrolytes and partially extend its pi-pi aromatic skeleton without sacrificing the redox activity and specific capacity. Based on the insolubility and the properly-selected electrolytes, 2PTCDA can exhibit almost the same cathode performance in all Li/Na/K-ion half and full cells. Specifically, 2PTCDA can deliver the redox potential range of 1.4-3.6 V (vs. Li/Na/K) and discharge capacities of 120-137 mAh g(-1 )in Li/Na/K-ion half cells.

Abstract:Organic cathodes have the advantages of abundant resources, high theoretical specific capacity, and mild synthesis conditions, but suffer from low density, poor electronic conductivity, and high solubility in liquid electrolytes. Herein, we develop a charge-transfer complex by combining 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (Li 4 C 8 H 2 O 6 ) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) at room temperature in 1,3-Dioxolane (DOL) solvent, for application in all-solid-state battery to overcome the above problems. Li 4 C 8 H 2 O 6 /TCNQ act as the electron donor/acceptor and combine to form an enhanced electron cloud through π-π interaction to facilitate electron transport. The electron conductivity of charge transfer complex Li 4 C 8 H 2 O 6 -TCNQ is enhanced to 7 × 10 −5 S/cm, which is three orders of magnitude higher than the two pristine materials and much higher than most conventional organic cathodes. The Li 4 C 8 H 2 O 6 -TCNQ electrode exhibits a discharge specific capacity of 172 mAh/g at 0.5 C, which is approximately 2.5 times higher than that of Li 4 C 8 H 2 O 6 and higher than its capacity in a liquid cell, and is stable for 100 cycles at 2 C. This result demonstrates that enhancing electron cloud through π-π interaction in charge transfer complexes is an effective way to realize the practical application of organic cathodes in sulfide all-solid-state batteries.

In article number 2207115, Cuiping Han, Hui‐Ming Cheng, and co‐workers report the design and synthesis of hexaazatrinaphthalene‐phenazine (HATN‐PNZ), a N‐heteroaromatic material, by an acid‐catalyzed condensation reaction, and demonstrate its use as an ultrahigh performance cathode for Zn‐ion batteries. This work provides a molecular‐engineering strategy for superior organic materials and adds new insights to understand the charge‐storage behavior of aqueous Zn–organic batteries.

Abstract:An organic Na-ion battery is reported with a polyanionic 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (Na(2)AQ26DS, 130 mAh g(-1)) cathode and the Na-intercalated state (Na4TP) of sodium terephthalate (Na2TP, 255 mAh g(-1)) as the anode. The resulting full cells deliver the maximum discharge capacity of 131 mAh g(cathode)(-1) in 0.5-3.2 V, simultaneously maintaining the average value of approximate to 62 mAh g(cathode)(-1) during 1200 cycles (0.5 A g(-1), approximate to 4 C). These results are among the best performing organic sodium-ion full cells reported to date.

Abstract:Electroactive organics have attracted significant attention as electrode materials for next-generation rechargeable batteries because of their structural diversity, molecular adjustability, abundance, flexibility, environmental friendliness and low cost. To date, a large number of organic materials have been applied in a variety of energy storage devices. However, the inherent problems of organic materials, such as their dissolution in electrolytes and low electronic conductivity, have restricted the development of organic electrodes. In order to solve these problems, many groups have carried out research and remarkable progress has been made. Nevertheless, most reviews of organic electrodes have focused on the positive electrode rather than the negative electrode. This review first provides an overview of the recent work on organic anodes for Li- and Na-ion batteries. Six categories of organic anodes are summarized and discussed. Many of the key factors that influence the electrochemical performance of organic anodes are highlighted and their prospects and remaining challenges are evaluated.

Abstract:Nickel (II) phthalocyanine-tetrasulfonic acid tetrasodium salt, with super chemically stability and high electrochemical capacity, is proposed as novel organic anodes. Ex situ FTIR patterns evidence the bonding effects between positively charged Li ions and negatively charged Pc molecules, which greatly benefits the stable reversibility and real capacity of TsNiPc. To conquer the poor conductivity of the organic molecular, graphene oxide/TsNiPc composites have been fabricated through a facile hydrothermal freeze-drying method. The capacity of TsNiPc@GO was maintained at 455 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles, when the capacity of 99.8 mAh g(-1) from carbon was subtracted, the true capacity of TsNiPc was 335.2 mAh g(-1), which was superior to many organic anodes. Abstract:Porous organic polymers are considered as excellent candidates for the electrode materials in rechargeable battery due to their desirable properties including porosity, customizable structure, and intrinsic chemical stability. Herein a Salen-based porous aromatic framework (Zn/Salen-PAF) is synthesized through a metal directed method and further used as efficient anode materialfor lithium-ion battery. Attributing to the stable functional skeleton, Zn/Salen-PAF delivers a reversible capacity of 631 mAh·g-1 at 50 mA·g-1, a high-rate capability of 157 mAh·g-1 at 20.0 A·g-1 and a long-term cycling capacity of 218 mAh·g-1 at 5.0 A·g-1 even after 2000 cycles. Compared to the Salen-PAF without metal ions, Zn/Salen-PAF possesses better electrical conductivity and more active sites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigation indicates that the coordination of Zn2+ with N2O2 unit not only improves the conjugation of the framework but also contributes to the in situ cross-sectional oxidation of the ligand during reaction, which results in the electron redistribution of oxygen atom and the formation of CO bonds.

Abstract:Bottom-up molecular engineering by rational design has emerged as a promising strategy for exploring advanced organic cathodes. However, directly programming organic moieties into high-performance electro-active materials remains a great challenge. Herein, we design and synthesize a hydrogen-bonded supramolecule (hexaazatrinaphthalene hexacarbonitrile, HATN-6CN) anchored with abundant cyano groups, which ensures structural stability, extended π-conjugated system, and multiple redox active centers. As a result, the HATN-6CN cathode delivers a high specific capacity (297.6 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , 225.2 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ) and outstanding long-term cycling performance (191.9 mAh g −1 over 1000 cycles at 5 A g −1 with a capacity retention of 85.2%). Moreover, the charge storage mechanisms, structural evolution, and reversibility during the redox process of HATN-6CN were systematically investigated. This work offers a feasible and promising avenue for bottom-up molecular engineering of organic electrodes by rational design.

Abstract:Abstract Guided by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) measurements and quantitative analysis, we identified and synthesized a new type of lithium nickel oxide as a cathode material for Li-ion batteries. This compound is a composition of two crystallographic components: a major stoichiometric layer-structured phase, LiNiO2, and a minor Li-containing disordered rock-salt phase, LiδNi1-δO, both embedded in the same cubic close-packed oxygen lattice. The LiNiO2|LiδNi1-δO composite, when used as the active material in a cathode, delivers high energy density, superior rate capability, and long-term cycling stability owing to its unique structural configuration.
