Abstract:The electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries is closely related to the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formed on anode surface. Despite the widespread commercialization of graphite anodes, SEI still suffers from unsatisfactory stability, leading to gradual loss of active lithium ions and capacity degradation of batteries. Here organic small molecular salts with unsaturated bonds and diverse anions are coated on graphite particles and work as substrates to form a modified SEI. The C=C double bond-containing organic salts, sodium acrylate (SA), sodium vinylsulfonate (SVS) and vinyl sodium phosphate (VSP), possessing carboxylate, sulfonate and phosphate groups, respectively, are rationally selected and their effects on the SEI and electrochemical properties of graphite anodes are systematically investigated. SVS modified graphite generates a SEI film with high flexibility, good compactness and lithium ions conductivity owning to the in-situ polymerization of carbon double bonds and polarity of ionic sulfonate groups. Accordingly, the first coulombic efficiency, rate capability and cycle life of graphite anodes are improved in both half cell and LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2-based full cell testing. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Aromatic porous-honeycomb electrodes for a sodium-organic energy storage device

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries using organic electrodes and sodium as a charge carrier can be high-performance, affordable energy storage devices due to the abundance of both sodium and organic materials. However, only few organic materials have been found to be active in sodium battery systems. Here we report a high-performance sodium-based energy storage device using a bipolar porous organic electrode constituted of aromatic rings in a porous-honeycomb structure. Unlike typical organic electrodes in sodium battery systems, the bipolar porous organic electrode has a high specific power of 10 kW kg −1 , specific energy of 500 Wh kg −1 , and over 7,000 cycle life retaining 80% of its initial capacity in half-cells. The use of bipolar porous organic electrode in a sodium-organic energy storage device would significantly enhance cost-effectiveness, and reduce the dependency on limited natural resources. The present findings suggest that bipolar porous organic electrode provides a new material platform for the development of a rechargeable energy storage technology.
Lignin-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon as a High-Rate Anode Material for Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon anode materials have been prepared by a hard-template (SiO2 nanoparticles) method, in which alkali lignin-derived azo polymer (AL-azo-NO2) was used as a low-cost carbon precursor. The as-prepared N-doped carbon materials show a honeycomb-like morphology with uniform nanopores. These materials are able to reversibly insert Na+ ions and show promising cycling performance. In particular, the porous carbon material with larger surface area and pore volume delivers a higher initial capacity of 205 mAh g(-1) in the voltage range of 0.01-2 V at 50 mA g(-1), compared to the material with lower surface area and pore volume (only 155 mAh g(-1)). The former also exhibits much better rate capability than the latter. Even at a high current density of 1 Ag-1, it shows a high specific capacity of 101 mAh g(-1) after 1100 cycles, which retains 92% of its initial capacity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results prove that the enhanced electrochemical performance is attributed to the improved Na+-ions kinetics in this material. This work presents an alternative approach for the synthesis of high-rate carbonaceous anode materials for sodium ion batteries from low cost and sustainable feedstock. Abstract:Sustainable sodium-ion batteries (SSIBs) using renewable organic electrodes are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for the large-scale renewable energy storage. However, the lack of high-performance anode material impedes the development of SSIBs. Herein, we report a new type of organic anode material based on azo group for SSIBs. Azobenzene-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid sodium salt is used as a model to investigate the electrochemical behaviors and reaction mechanism of azo compound. It exhibits a reversible capacity of 170 mAh g-1 at 0.2C. When current density is increased to 20C, the reversible capacities of 98 mAh g-1 can be retained for 2000 cycles, demonstrating excellent cycling stability and high rate capability. The detailed characterizations reveal that azo group acts as an electrochemical active site to reversibly bond with Na+ . The reversible redox chemistry between azo compound and Na ions offer opportunities for developing long-cycle-life and high-rate SSIBs.

Abstract:Aromatic organic compounds can be used as electrode materials in rechargeable batteries and are expected to advance the development of both anode and cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). However, most aromatic organic compounds assessed as anode materials in SIBs to date exhibit significant degradation issues under fast‐charge/discharge conditions and unsatisfying long‐term cycling performance. Here we present a molecular design concept for improving the stability of organic compounds for battery electrodes. The molecular design of the investigated compound, [2.2.2.2]paracyclophane‐1,9,17,25‐tetraene ( PCT ), can stabilize the neutral state by local aromaticity and the doubly reduced state by global aromaticity, resulting in an anode material with extraordinarily stable cycling performance and outstanding performance under fast‐charge/discharge conditions, demonstrating an exciting new path for the development of electrode materials for SIBs and other types of batteries.

Abstract:Owing to the low cost and abundant resource of sodium, sodium-ion batteries demonstrate bright application prospects for large-scale energy storage systems. Microstructure-controlled amorphous carbon with proper surface area and high electronic conductivity is considered to be one of the most promising anode material. Nevertheless, the cost of the reported carbon materials is still high because of the low carbon yield and expensive precursors. Besides, the low initial coulombic efficiency is also a big challenge. Herein, a high-yielding (70%) microstructure-controlled amorphous carbon is achieved via a pre-oxidation stabilization process and following carbonization of the mixed pitch and phenol formaldehyde resin precursor. The effects of pre-oxidation stabilization on adjusting the microstructure of amorphous carbon are systematically investigated, as well as the electrochemical performance. The optimal sample exhibits high initial coulombic efficiency (82%), high reversible capacity (268.3 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C) and good rate capability (106 mAh g(-1) at 4 C) as an anode material of sodium-ion batteries. This high-performance amorphous carbon material is prepared via a controllable and low-cost strategy, presenting an appealing development of practical anode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Long-lifespan Polyanionic Organic Cathodes for Highly Efficient Organic Sodium-ion Batteries.

Abstract:An organic Na-ion battery is reported with a polyanionic 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (Na(2)AQ26DS, 130 mAh g(-1)) cathode and the Na-intercalated state (Na4TP) of sodium terephthalate (Na2TP, 255 mAh g(-1)) as the anode. The resulting full cells deliver the maximum discharge capacity of 131 mAh g(cathode)(-1) in 0.5-3.2 V, simultaneously maintaining the average value of approximate to 62 mAh g(cathode)(-1) during 1200 cycles (0.5 A g(-1), approximate to 4 C). These results are among the best performing organic sodium-ion full cells reported to date.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with organic electrodes are an emerging research direction due to the sustainability of organic materials based on elements like C, H, O, and sodium ions. Currently, organic electrode materials for SIBs are mainly used as cathodes because of their relatively high redox potentials (>1 V). Organic electrodes with low redox potential that can be used as anode are rare. Herein, a novel organic anode material (tetrasodium 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylate, Na4TDC) has been developed with low redox potential (<0.7 V) and excellent cyclic stability. Its three-sodium storage mechanism was demonstrated with various in-situ/ex-situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, showing a high capacity of 208 mAh/g and an average decay rate of merely 0.022% per cycle. Moreover, the Na4TDC-hard carbon composite can further acquire improved capacity and cycling stability for 1200 cycles even with a high mass loading of up to 20 mg cm(-2). By pairing with a thick Na3V2(PO4)(3) cathode (20.6 mg cm(-2)), the as-fabricated full cell exhibited high operating voltage (2.8 V), excellent rate performance and cycling stability with a high capacity retention of 88.7% after 200 cycles, well highlighting the Na4TDC anode material for SIBs. Abstract:We show a general method for achieving high-performance sodium storage materials via transforming crystalline P2S5 to amorphous P2S5 adhered to carbon matrix. The amorphous P2S5/C composite shows unique structural characteristics differing from the crystalline, which is identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and so on. The amorphous P5S5/C composite exhibits a safe average potential of 0.82 V, a reversible capacity of 400 mA h g(-1), a remarkable capacity retention of 89.4% over 4000 cycles as well as good rate capability. Our findings open up opportunities to design of advanced anodes for room-temperature sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Although the room-temperature rechargeable sodium-ion battery has emerged as an attractive alternative energy storage solution for large-scale deployment, major challenges toward practical sodium-ion battery technology remain including identification and engineering of anode materials that are both technologically feasible and economical. Herein, an antimony-based anode is developed by incorporating antimony into graphitic carbon matrices using low-cost materials and scalable processes. The composite anode exhibits excellent overall performance in terms of packing density, fast charge/discharge capability and cyclability, which is enabled by the conductive and compact graphitic network. A full cell design featuring this composite anode with a hexacyanometallate cathode achieves superior power output and low polarization, which offers the potential for realizing a high-performance, cost-effective sodium-ion battery.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials are promising to be applied in sodium ion batteries (SIBs) due to their low cost and easily modified molecular structures. Nevertheless, low conductivity and high solubility in electrolytes still limit the development of organic electrodes. In this work, a carboxylate small molecule (BDTTS) based on tetrathiafulvalene is developed as anode material for SIBs. BDTTS has a large rigid π‐conjugated planar structure, which may reduce solubility in the electrolyte, meanwhile facilitating charge transporting. Experimental results and theoretical calculations both support that apart from the four carbonyl groups, the sulfur atoms on tetrathiafulvalene also provide additional active sites during the discharge/charge process. Therefore, the additional active sites can well compensate for the capacity loss caused by the large molecular weight. The as‐synthesized BDTTS electrode renders an excellent capacity of 230 mAh g‐1 at a current density of 50 mA g‐1 and an excellent long‐life performance of 128 mAh g‐1 at 2C after 500 cycles. This work enriches the study on organic electrodes for high‐performance SIBs and paves the way for further development and utilization of organic electrodes.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are commanding increasing attention owing to their promising electrochemical performance and sustainability. Organic electrode materials (OEMs) complement such technologies as they can be sourced from biomass and recycling them is environmentally friendly. Organic anodes based on sodium carboxylates have exhibited immense potential, except the limitation of current synthesis methods concerning upscaling and energy costs. In this work, a rapid and energy efficient microwave-assisted synthesis for organic anodes is presented using sodium naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate as a model compound. Optimizing the synthesis and electrode composition enables the compound to deliver a reversible initial capacity of ≈250 mAh g<sup>-1</sup> at a current density of 25 mA g<sup>-1</sup> with a high initial Coulombic efficiency (≈78%). The capacity is stable over 400 cycles and the compound also exhibits good rate performance. The successful demonstration of this rapid synthesis may facilitate the transition to preparing organic battery materials by scalable, efficient methods.

A Soft Carbon Materials with Engineered Composition and Microstructure for Sodium Battery Anodes

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have advantages in high sodium resources, providing powerful supplement to the current energy storage system. However, the lack of low-cost and high-performance anode materials still limits its practical application. Herein, a soft carbon anode derived from petroleum coke was successfully synthesized by engineering its composition and microstructure through resin and sodium phosphate compositing with optimal heat treatment process, delivering significant merits over existing composite anode in term of price density, initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and carbon yield. Resin helps to increase micropores and inhibit graphitization. Na3PO4 contributes to expand layer spacing and increase reversible groups, meanwhile facilitates the cross-linking of graphite microcrystalline and provides additional sodium supplement with improved ICE and conductivity. Through the synergistic effect by the additives, the optimized sample (P-ONH-1200) exhibits a superior reversible charge specific capacity of 311.9 mAh g-1 with high cycling stability, ICE (90.7%) in SIBs, and high carbon yield (70%). It also gains rate performance of 209.7 mAh g-1 at 4C with 98% retention after 1000 cycles. The full cell with Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cathode at 1.05N/P ratio exhibits an excellent stability with a capacity retention of 70% after 500 cycles at 1C. It provides a model reference for the microstructure regulation of petroleum coke and a revenue for preparation high-performance soft carbon anode for SIBs.

Abstract:Flower-like assembly of ultrathin nanosheets composed of anatase and bronze TiO embedded in carbon is successfully synthesized by a simple solvothermal reaction, followed with a high-temperature annealing. As an anode material in sodium-ion batteries, this composite exhibits outstanding electrochemical performances. It delivers a reversible capacity of 120 mA h g over 6000 cycles at 10 C. Even at 100 C, there is still a capacity of 104 mA h g. Besides carbon matrix and hierarchical structure, abundant interfaces between anatase and bronze greatly enhance the performance by offering additional sites for reversible Na storage and improving the charge-transfer kinetics. The interface enhancements are confirmed by discharge/charge profiles, rate performances, electrochemical impedance spectra, and first-principle calculations. These results offer a new pathway to upgrade the performances of anode materials in sodium-ion batteries.
High-Performance Anode of Sodium Ion Battery from Polyacrylonitrile/Humic Acid Composite Electrospun Carbon Fibers

Abstract:Humic acid is creatively selected as an anode material in sodium ion batteries. Bio-based carbon fibers (H-CF) are fabricated from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) - humic acid (HA) via simple eletrospinning followed by stabilization and carbonization. The heat-treatment temperature (HTT) is optimized based on analysis of material structures and electrochemical performances. Due to unique composite networks and oxygenic functionalities, the H-CF anode obtained at 1300 degrees C has a large reversible capacity of 261.3 mAh g(-1) (current density: 0.02 A g(-1), initial efficiency: 69.6%). The anode also presents good cycle stability (249.6 mAh g(-1) reversible capacity at 0.1 A g(-1) with capacity retention of 92.8% over 100 cycles) and good rate capability (208.6 mAh g g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) and 81.7 mAh g g(-1) at 1 A g g(-1)). Abstract:Organic cathode materials for rechargeable metal-ion batteries have attracted much attention, while their applications are still limited by the unsatisfactory voltage platform owing to the low conductivity and high solubility of organic materials in electrolyte. Rational molecular design is a promising way to solve the aforementioned problems. Dihydrophenazine (Pz) and its derivatives with high theoretical specific capacity and suitable oxidation-reduction potential are promising as ideal p-type cathode materials. Herein, the electron donating 5,10-dihydrophenazine is combined with the electron-withdrawing pyridine derivatives, and two donor-acceptor type polymers (BPyPz and TPyPz) are thus developed and successfully applied as p-type cathode. The active site on Pz is affected by the position of pyridine group, which significantly affect the redox potential and electrochemical properties of the materials. The structure-property relationship is investigated through density functional theory calculations and various electrochemical tests. BPyPz with pyridine connected to dihydrophenazine at 2,5- position provides high reversible specific capacities of 205 mAh/g in half-cell and 162 mAh/g in full-cell, respectively. Notably, the average voltage of the full-cell is as high as 3.0 V, which is among one of the highest voltage platforms for organic cathode in full-cell. Therefore, this work demonstrates the potential of sodium-based dual-ion full cell, and may provide a guidance for the future design of high-voltage organic cathode materials.

Abstract:Organic compounds have become a potentially important choice for a new generation of energy-storage electrode materials due to their designability, flexibility, green sustainability, and abundance. However, the applications of organic electrode materials are still limited because of their dissolution in electrolytes and low electrical conductivity, which in turn cause poor cycling stability. Here, for the first time, we report 2-amino-4-thiazole-acetic acid (ATA) and its sodium salt, sodium 2-amino-4-thiazol-derived polymer (PATANa), as an anode. The PATANa showed a two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet structure, offering a larger contact area with the electrolyte and a shorter ion-migration path, which improved the ion-diffusion kinetics. The polymer showed excellent cycling stability and outstanding rate capability when tested as an anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). It could deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 303 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 for 100 cycles and maintain a high discharge capacity of 190 mA h g −1 after 1000 long cycle numbers even at a high current density of 1000 mA g −1 . This approach of salinizing the polymer opens a new way to develop anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.
