Abstract:In recent years, the pursuit of high-efficiency electrochemical storage technology, the multivalent metal-ion batteries (MIBs) based on aqueous electrolytes have been widely explored by researchers because of their safety, environmental friendliness, abundant reserves and low price, and especially the merits in energy and power densities. This review firstly expounds on the problems existing in the electrode materials of aqueous multivalent MIBs (Zn2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+), from the classical inorganic materials to the emerging organic compounds, and then summarizes the design strategies in bulk and interface structure of electrodes with favorable kinetics and stable cycling performance, especially laying the emphasis on the charge storage mechanism of cathode materials and dendrite-free Zinc anode from the aspect of electrolyte optimization strategies, which can be extended to other aqueous multivalent MIBs. Ultimately, the possible development directions of the aqueous multivalent MIBs in the future are provided, anticipating to provide a meaningful guideline for researchers in this area.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have emerged as the most promising candidate for large-scale energy storage due to their inherent safety, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. Simultaneously, the utilization of organic electrode materials with renewable resources, environmental compatibility, and diverse structures has sparked a surge in research and development of aqueous Zn-organic batteries (ZOBs). A comprehensive review is warranted to systematically present recent advancements in design principles, synthesis techniques, energy storage mechanisms, and zinc-ion storage performance of organic cathodes. In this review article, we comprehensively summarize the energy storage mechanisms employed by aqueous ZOBs. Subsequently, we categorize organic cathode materials into small-molecule compounds and high-molecular polymers respectively. Novel polymer materials such as conjugated polymers (CPs), conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highlighted with an overview of molecular design strategies and structural optimization based on organic cathode materials aimed at enhancing the performance of aqueous ZOBs. Finally, we discuss the challenges faced by aqueous ZOBs along with future prospects to offer insights into their practical applications.

Abstract:With the widespread use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in recent decades, lithium resources are at risk of depletion. Electrochemical energy storage using LIBs cannot keep pace with socioeconomic development. Therefore, it is necessary to develop electrochemical systems capable of storing large amounts of energy in the future to replace LIBs. As a result of their environmental friendliness, low cost, and high safety, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are potential replacements for LIBs. Several challenges remain for the commercialization of AZIBs, however, such as the development of high-performance cathodes. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and related materials have evolved into potential cathode materials for AZIBs due to their high porosities, tunable structures, and multifunctionality. Hence, this review summarizes the latest progress in MOF-based cathode materials for AZIBs. We present and discuss different types of MOF-based electrode materials (vanadium/manganese-based MOFs and their derivatives, Prussian blue and its analogs, and other MOFs and their derivatives), focusing on the impacts of the structures and morphologies of MOF materials on AZIBs performance as well as investigating how zinc ions are stored. Finally, future developments of MOF-based materials for AZIBs are proposed. Our work is expected to spur innovative research into new MOF-based electrode materials for AZIBs and provide guidance for storing and converting energy in the future.

Abstract:In this review, the recent progress on aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with organic electrode materials is summarized. The interaction between non‐metallic ion charge carriers and organic electrode host materials is emphasized and the design strategies toward achieving high electrochemical performance of organic electrode materials are overviewed. The future research orientation in this field is also discussed. Aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries have attracted much attention in recent years owing to their fast kinetics, long cycle life, and low manufacture cost. Organic compounds with flexible structural designability are promising electrode materials for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries. In this review, the recent progress of organic electrode materials is systematically summarized for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with the focus on the interaction between non‐metallic ion charge carriers and organic electrode host materials. Both the cations (proton, ammonium ion, and methyl viologen ions) and anions (chloridion, sulfate ion, perchlorate ion, trifluoromethanesulfonate and trifluoromethanesulfonimide ion) storage are discussed. Moreover, the design strategies toward improving the comprehensive performance of organic electrode materials in aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries will be summarized. More organic electrode materials with new reaction mechanisms need to be explored to meet the diverse demands of aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with different charge carriers in the future. This review provides insights into developing high‐performance organic electrodes for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries.

Abstract:In an effort to search for low-cost and sustainable energy storage systems, organic material-based aqueous batteries have attracted numerous attentions. In particular, aqueous monovalent-ion organic batteries, including either anion or cation storage, have been recently investigated with the employment of different redox-active organic materials. In this review, the recent progress in aqueous monovalent-ion batteries with organic materials are summarized. The different configurations of aqueous monovalent-ion organic batteries are also introduced with the explanation of different working mechanisms. A comprehensive overview of the reported redox-active organic materials, mainly conductive or conjugated polymers, nitroxide radicals, and carbonyl compounds are presented. Moreover, the remaining challenges and recommendations with respect to aqueous monovalent-ion batteries are also discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract:Renewable energy has been extensively developed to curb the greenhouse effect and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Nevertheless, their applications are greatly limited due to the intermittence and instability nature. Therefore, reasonably store and distribution of new energy have become a widespread concern. Among various energy storage technologies, lithium-ion battery technology has achieved great success, but the scarcity of lithium resources and the use of toxic and flammable organic electrolytes have limited its further development. Oppositely, aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have advantages of safety, abundant resources, low cost, and the potential to store energy at the power plant level. However, the low capacity, poor cycle stability, and low voltage of cathode materials have become one of the limiting factors for the application of AZIBs. Herein, we systematically summarize and discuss the reported cathode materials, including manganese-based oxides, vanadium-based compounds, Prussian blue analogues, organics, MXenes, transition metal chalcogenides, layered double hydroxides, and others. Their developments, challenges, and feasible modification strategies are thoroughly analyzed. In addition, we also summarize and compare the proposed energy storage mechanisms of cathode materials. Finally, we propose potential research directions in the future for cathode materials, and provide essential guidance for the development of high-performance AZIBs

Abstract:With the rapid growth in energy consumption, renewable energy is a promising solution. However, renewable energy (e.g., wind, solar, and tidal) is discontinuous and irregular by nature, which poses new challenges to the new generation of large‐scale energy storage devices. Rechargeable batteries using aqueous electrolyte and multivalent ion charge are considered more suitable candidates compared to lithium‐ion and lead‐acid batteries, owing to their low cost, ease of manufacture, good safety, and environmentally benign characteristics. However, some substantial challenges hinder the development of aqueous rechargeable multivalent ion batteries (AMVIBs), including the narrow stable electrochemical window of water (≈1.23 V), sluggish ion diffusion kinetics, and stability issues of electrode materials. To address these challenges, a range of encouraging strategies has been developed in recent years, in the aspects of electrolyte optimization, material structure engineering and theoretical investigations. To inspire new research directions, this review focuses on the latest advances in cathode materials for aqueous batteries based on the multivalent ions (Zn2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Al3+), their common challenges, and promising strategies for improvement. In addition, further suggestions for development directions and a comparison of the different AMVIBs are covered.

Abstract:The generation of renewable energy is a promising solution to counter the rapid increase in energy consumption. Nevertheless, the availability of renewable resources (e.g., wind, solar, and tidal) is non-continuous and temporary in nature, posing new demands for the production of next-generation large-scale energy storage devices. Because of their low cost, highly abundant raw materials, high safety, and environmental friendliness, aqueous rechargeable multivalent metal-ion batteries (AMMIBs) have recently garnered immense attention. However, several challenges hamper the development of AMMIBs, including their narrow electrochemical stability, poor ion diffusion kinetics, and electrode instability. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been extensively investigated for applications in energy storage devices because of their distinct chemical and physical properties. The wide interlayer distance of layered TMDs is an appealing property for ion diffusion and intercalation. This review focuses on the most recent advances in TMDs as cathode materials for aqueous rechargeable batteries based on multivalent charge carriers (Zn2+, Mg2+, and Al3+). Through this review, the key aspects of TMD materials for high-performance AMMIBs are highlighted. Furthermore, additional suggestions and strategies for the development of improved TMDs are discussed to inspire new research directions.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries using inorganic compounds as electrode materials are considered a promising solution for grid-scale energy storage, while wide application is limited by the short life and/or high cost of electrodes. Organics with carbonyl groups are being investigated as the alternative to inorganic electrode materials because they offer the advantages of tunable structures, renewability, and they are environmentally benign. Furthermore, the wide internal space of such organic materials enables flexible storage of various charged ions (for example, H+, Li+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+, and so on). We offer a comprehensive overview of the progress of organics containing carbonyls for energy storage and conversion in aqueous electrolytes, including applications in aqueous batteries as solid-state electrodes, in flow batteries as soluble redox species, and in water electrolysis as redox buffer electrodes. The advantages of organic electrodes are summarized, with a discussion of the challenges remaining for their practical application.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage devices will definitely play a vital role in the future energy landscape of the world. The innovation of electrode materials is a key task for the breakthrough of present bottleneck faced by electrochemical energy storage devices. Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) are gaining rapid attention, and they offer tremendous opportunities to explore the low‐cost, safe, and next‐generation green batteries for large‐scale stationary storage applications. In this review, the authors aim to give a comprehensive overview and summary of the recent progresses in cathode materials for AZIBs. Broadly, the authors classify the cathode materials for AZIBs into four groups: manganese‐based cathodes, vanadium‐based cathodes, Prussian blue analogs, and organic compounds. The reaction mechanisms, zinc storage properties, and several optimizing strategies of these cathode materials are summarized. Comparative observations of the main cathode families are discussed. Moreover, the emerging challenges and future research perspectives of cathode materials for AZIBs are proposed.

Abstract:As cathode materials for zinc‐ion batteries, organic materials have attracted great interests due to their flexible structure designability, high theoretical capacity, environmental friendliness, and sustainability. A systematical overview of three types of organic materials is presented to summarize their structures and performances, propose the strategies for their performance enhancement, expound the current challenges and perspectives.The quest for advanced energy storage devices with cheaper, safer, more resource‐abundant storage has triggered intense research into zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). Among them, organic materials as cathode materials for ZIBs have attracted great interest due to their flexible structure designability, high theoretical capacity, environmental friendliness, and sustainability. Although numerous organic electrode materials have been studied and different redox mechanisms have been proposed in the past decade, their electrochemical performance still needs further improvement, and the mechanisms require further exploration. This paper provides a systematical overview of three types of organic materials (bipolar‐type conductive polymer, n‐type conjugated carbonyl compounds, and p‐type material) on the energy storage mechanisms and distinct characteristics. We then focus on discussing the design strategies to improve electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the challenges and future research directions are discussed to provide a foundation for further developing organic‐based ZIBs.

Abstract:As an alternative to conventional inorganic intercalation electrode materials, organic electrode materials are promising candidates for the next generation of sustainable and versatile energy storage devices. In this paper we provide an overview of organic electrode materials, including their fundamental knowledge, development history and perspective applications. Based on different organics including n-type, p-type and bipolar, we firstly analyzed their working principles, reaction mechanisms, electrochemical performances, advantages and challenges. To understand the development history and trends in organic electrode materials, we elaborate in detail various organics with different structures, including conducting polymers, organodisulfides, thioethers, nitroxyl radical polymers and conjugated carbonyl compounds. The high electrochemical performance, in addition with the unique features of organics such as flexibility, processability and structure diversity, provide them great perspective in various energy storage devices, including rechargeable Li/Na batteries, supercapacitors, thin film batteries, aqueous rechargeable batteries, redox flow batteries and even all-organic batteries. It is expected that organic electrode materials will show their talents in the "post Li-ion battery" era, towards cheap, green, sustainable and versatile energy storage devices.

Abstract:With the increase of device requirements, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are facing tremendous challenges in large-scale applications due to the high price and gradual shortage of lithium sources. In contrast, multivalent ion batteries, such as aluminum, magnesium, and zinc, are promising candidates for the next-generation energy-storage systems because of their high volumetric energy density, safe operation, and abundant reserves. The strong intercalation between multivalent ions and the host materials, however, will cause lower ion-diffusion kinetics and a poor discharge capacity. One of the main challenges is to search for a suitable cathode material with a high capacity and good structural stability to overcome the abovementioned problems. Two-dimensional layered materials, with characteristic unique structural features, good conductivity, and high electrochemically active surface, have attracted attention from researchers during the past decade. In this review, the design approach and synthetic procedures for the preparation of two-dimensional materials as cathodes for multivalent ion batteries, including interlayer engineering, two-dimensional heterostructures, pore/hole engineering, and heteroatom doping, are summarized. Meanwhile, the relationship between the design configuration and optimized electrochemical performance is rationally and systematically presented. Additionally, perspectives for the sustainable synthesis of cathode materials are proposed for multivalent metal-ion chemistry.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) are regarded as promising electrochemical energy storage devices owing to its low cost, intrinsic safety, abundant zinc reserves, and ideal specific capacity. Compared with other cathode materials, manganese dioxide with high voltage, environmental protection and high theoretical specific capacity receives considerable attention. However, the problems of structural instability, manganese dissolution and poor electrical conductivity make the exploration of high‐performance manganese dioxide still a great challenge and impede its practical applications. Besides, zinc storage mechanisms involved are complex and somewhat controversial. To address these issues, tremendous efforts, such as surface engineering, heteroatoms doping, defect engineering, electrolyte modification, some advanced characterization technologies and so on, have been devoted to improving its electrochemical performance and illustrating zinc storage mechanism. In this review, we particularly focus on the classification of manganese dioxide based on crystal structures, zinc ions storage mechanisms, the existing challenges and corresponding optimization strategies as well as structure‐performance relationship. In the final section, the application perspectives of manganese oxide cathode materials in AZIBs are prospected.

Abstract:Nonaqueous magnesium secondary batteries have attracted tremendous attention owing to their natural abundance, low cost, high theoretical volumetric specific capacities of 3833 mAh/cm(3), and free of dendrite formation. However, the high polarity of Mg2+ ion results in the strong electrostatic interaction between Mg2+ ions and the anions of cathode materials, which makes it difficult to realize reversible insertion and de-insertion of Mg2+ ion in most cathode materials used in lithium ion batteries. At present, the research of cathode materials for magnesium secondary batteries is mainly focused on inorganic compounds. Unfortunately, such cathode materials suffer from problems of working at low current density, slow reaction kinetics, and complicated synthesis process. In comparison, organic electrode materials have been recognized as promising electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage systems because organic materials composed of naturally abundant chemical elements of C, H, O, N, S, etc., can be easily synthesized from renewable resources with low-cost at mild conditions. More importantly, organic materials with chemical diversity and structural flexibility can be purposefully synthesized. What's more, the capacity, oxidation/reduction potentials, solubility, electron transfer rates, and mechanical properties can be regulated by introducing various groups or heteroatoms. Furthermore, compared to inorganic electrode materials with sluggish kinetics, organic electrode materials usually store ions through ion coordination mechanism, which is not limited by the type and size of ions and can be applied to different energy storage systems such as lithium ion batteries, sodium ion batteries, potassium ion batteries, multivalent-ion batteries, and supercapacitors. Herein, the recent progress of various organic-based materials for nonaqueous magnesium secondary batteries is summarized and the general redox mechanism is presented. Finally, the problems and challenges, resolution strategies and future development directions of organic electrode materials are briefly summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials take advantages of potentially sustainable production and structural tunability compared with present commercial inorganic electrode materials. However, their applications in traditional rechargeable batteries with nonaqueous electrolytes suffer from the premature failure and safety concerns. In comparison, aqueous rechargeable batteries based on organic electrode materials have received extensive attentions in recent years for low-cost and sustainable energy storage systems due to their inherent safety. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary on the recent progress in advanced organic electrode materials for aqueous rechargeable batteries. We start from the overview of working principles and general design strategies of organic electrode materials in aqueous rechargeable batteries. Then the research advances of organic electrode materials in various aqueous rechargeable batteries are highlighted in terms of charge carriers (monovalent ions, multivalent ions, and anions). We emphasized the characteristics of organic electrode materials in various charge carriers. Finally, the critical challenges and future efforts of aqueous organic rechargeable batteries are discussed. More organic electrode materials with better electronic conductivity and fast reaction kinetics are still needed to build advanced aqueous batteries for commercial applications.

Abstract:Aqueous Zinc‐Ion Batteries In article number 2400580, Weixiao Ji, He Huang, Siping Pang, and co‐workers developed a high‐voltage organic cathode material for aqueous zinc‐ion batteries via a heteroatomic substitution strategy. The organic cathode can be synthesized directly within the battery and exhibits commendable recyclability, ideally suited for future large‐scale application energy storage applications.
