Conformational Modulation of Efficient Macrocyclic Emitters Featuring Delayed Fluorescence by Conjugation Length and Cavity Dimensions

Abstract:The π-conjugated macrocyclic emitters with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics have attracted widespread attention in the field of organic electroluminescence (EL) materials due to their unique geometries and excellent luminescence performance. Despite the significant impact of conjugation length and cavity dimensions on molecular conformation, the influence of these factors on the excited-state properties remains understudied. Herein, we formulated a strategy aimed at modulating the conformation of TADF macrocyclic molecules containing aniline as the donor (D) unit, and triazine as the acceptor (A), linked in D-A and D-π-A alternative macrocyclic construction (MC-TNT and MC-TST). Corroborated by experimental and theoretical analyses, the compact and conformationally twisted MC-TNT exhibits efficient blue luminescence in crystalline state, facilitating EL at high doping concentrations with maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 13.9%, leading the field of blue macrocyclic emitters. Notably, MC-TST with π-bridge and flat conformation, demonstrates diminished Coulombic repulsion, achieving nearly 100% photoluminescence quantum yield and superior horizontal dipole orientation of 85% in 5 wt% doped films, and the corresponding device's EQEmax reaches record-high 32.7% within the TADF macrocyclic domain.

Abstract:TADF macrocycles are classified into four distinct categories: TICT‐TADF, TSCT‐TADF, MR‐TADF macrocycles, and macrocycles for TADF exciplexes. This comprehensive review aims to provide valuable insights into the world of macrocyclic TADF systems, offering a clear understanding and inspiration for researchers in the field of optoelectronic materials. Macrocyclic compounds have garnered considerable attention in the realms of supramolecular chemistry and optoelectronic materials owing to their distinctive geometries, exceptional stability, and potential chiral properties. As third‐generation organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) emitters, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials present themselves as promising contenders due to their ability to achieve complete exciton utilization through the harnessing of triplet excitons. The incorporation of macrocyclic structures with TADF characteristics holds the potential to yield TADF emitters endowed with unique attributes, thereby synergistically enhancing the performance and longevity of TADF materials for diverse device applications, ultimately propelling their commercialization. Within this comprehensive review, a thorough exploration of the molecular structures, synthesis methodologies, structure‐property relationships, and applications of the reported macrocyclic TADF systems in OLEDs are delved. Additionally, the prevailing challenges and prospective research directions are highlighted that demand attention in the realm of macrocyclic TADF materials. It is hoped that this review will provide researchers engaged in optoelectronic materials research with a lucid comprehension and inspiration concerning the intricacies of these macrocyclic TADF systems.

Abstract:A class of macrocycles emitting room‐temperature phosphorescence or thermally activated delayed fluorescence are established based on hydrogen‐bonded cyclo[6]aramide by introducing various donors, which exhibit tunable colors including white‐light emission through host–guest complexation. The results highlight the potential of such rigid and planar macrocycle for developing novel luminescent materials. Despite vast applications of macrocycles in supramolecular chemistry, achieving long‐lived emissions including room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) for potential use still presents a great challenge. This work first reports hydrogen‐bonded (H‐bonded) macrocycles emitting RTP and TADF by introducing various donors onto the same aramide skeleton containing a rigid acceptor. The formation of charge transfer effectively enhances the photoluminescence efficiency. Aromatic carbonyl groups promote the intersystem crossing. The drastically reduced flexibility of chromophores fixed by the H‐bonded macrocyclic framework contributes to suppress the nonradiative decay to stabilize triplet excitons. Therefore, RTP and TADF are acquired by altering donors, and are systematically revealed by comparisons with control compounds and theoretical calculations. Finally, near white‐light emission (CIE, 0.30, 0.33) is realized via host–guest interactions.

Abstract:A covalently bridged macrocycle architecture (5) comprising two anthracene strands that connect at the lactam positions of a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) chromophore has been constructed. The crystal structure reveals that the central DPP chromophore is wrapped by the external twisted bis-anthracene macrocycle. The internally bridged macrocycle architecture endows 5 with multifunctional properties. Due to shielding by the double anthracene straps, 5a and a polymer derived from it, DPP-Cycle, display strong fluorescence emission features in both organic media and the solid state. Moreover, the emission colors of these macrocyclic materials can be effectively tuned by external stimuli such as mechanical and thermal treatments, as well as solvent fuming. Compound 5a is stable in the presence of most metal cations but degrades rapidly when contacted with Cu2+ in acetonitrile. This decomposition, which is thought to involve a reaction at the central DPP via a radical-mediated mechanism, was found to be accelerated in 5a compared to the non-cyclic analogue 2a. This leads us to suggest that internally bridged macrocycles, such as those described here, may have a role to play as fluorescent Cu2+ sensors. Finally, the high fluorescence of 5a in the solid state allows for its use in the area of latent fingerprint (LFP) imaging.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive investigation into the molecular structures in the ground state and the first singlet excited state, intramolecular and intermolecular interactions, as well as the emission properties of monomers, dimers and macrocycles using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. Our study aims to unveil the macrocyclization-induce emission enhancement principle for benzothiadiazole-based macrocycles. Compared with the typical π - π stacking of monomers, macrocycles exhibit the tighter stacking arrangement due to the presence of strong intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions and the rigid triangular geometry of macrocycle, which is conducive to the enhancement of emissions efficiency. The calculated oscillator strength of macrocycles in the first excited state is much higher than that of dimers composed of two monomers. Meanwhile, the large transition electric dipole moment is beneficial for enhancing the emission efficiency. Additionally, our study reveals an emission wavelength red-shift for macrocycles after "CH"/N substitution in the acceptor moiety, and the transition mode from LUMO to HOMO can be mainly attributed to intramolecular charge transition characters from acceptor to donor fragments. Our theoretical study might provide valuable insights for the design of innovative luminescent macrocycles with high emission efficiency.

Abstract:A novel thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter, DCNP-SCF, is developed based on a dicyanophenanthrene acceptor. DCNP-SCF is prepared by a simple C-N coupling reaction. Its thermal, theoretical, photophysical, and electroluminescent properties are investigated, emphasizing its potential in organic electroluminescence devices. DCNP-SCF demonstrates highly distorted donor–acceptor conformation, facilitating significant TADF for efficient triplet harvesting in electroluminescence devices. Additionally, due to the moderate electron push–pull effect, DCNP-SCF exhibits appropriate intramolecular charge transfer for considerable photoluminescence quantum yield for electroluminescence applications.

Abstract:Luminophores with tunable emission properties are appealing due to various applications. Among those properties, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been attracting enormous research interests. Herein, we synthesized a 9,9'-spirobifluorene based homo-conjugated molecule 1, which connects a diphenylamino moiety as electron donor and a naphthalimide group as electron acceptor via 2,2'-positions of spirofluorene. Compound 1 displays dual emission behaviour with both blue and orange fluorescence. The one orange fluorescence around 555 nmshows sensitivity to oxygen and a prolonged lifetime of 284 ns in degassed toluene. Such characteristics imply TADF nature for this emission from a charge-transfer excited state. The other emission at 440 nm with blue colour displayed resistance to oxygen quenching and a normal fluorescence lifetime of 1.5 ns. Compared with control molecule, this emission band is assigned as conventional fluorescence from a localized excited state. In addition, dual emission property allows molecule 1 to be modulated to emit white photoluminescence in thin film with a CIE color coordinate of (0.25, 0.33).

Abstract:A multicolor persistent luminescence solid polymeric system based on macrocycle-confined phosphorescence energy transfer was constructed with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and poly(vinyl alcohol) modified by triphenylene derivative (TP-PVA). Attributed to the fact that macrocycles effectively suppress the aggregation of guests and form a rigid environment via coassembling with the polymer, the phosphorescence lifetime of the yielded polymeric films is prolonged from 0.22 to 5.84 s, accompanied by a visible afterglow of more than 1 min. Furthermore, upon doping with several commercial dyes, full-color afterglow emissions with a duration of more than 50 s are realized through phosphorescence energy transfer. Notably, the multicolor-emitting-afterglow materials are successfully exploited for noctilucent lighting and anticounterfeiting ink.

Abstract:Compounds MBZ-mPXZ, MBZ-2PXZ, MBZ-oPXZ, EBZ-PXZ, and TBZ-PXZ were conveniently synthesized, and they were found to exhibit TADF properties with lifetimes of 857, 575, 561, 768, and 600 ns, respectively. These short lifetimes of the compounds might be due to the combination of small singlet-triplet splitting energy (ΔE(ST)) and benzoate group, which could be an efficient strategy for the further design of short-lifetime TADF materials.

Abstract:We presented an effective and universal strategy for the improvement of luminophore's solid-state emission, i.e., macrocyclization-induced emission enhancement (MIEE), by linking luminophores through C(sp 3 ) bridges to give a macrocycle. Benzothiadiazole-based macrocycle (BT-LC) has been synthesized by a one-step condensation of the monomer 4,7-bis(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)−2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT-M) with paraformaldehyde, catalyzed by Lewis acid. In comparison with the monomer, macrocycle BT-LC produces much more intense fluorescence in the solid state ( Φ PL = 99%) and exhibits better device performance in the application of OLEDs. Single-crystal analysis and theoretical simulations reveal that the monomer can return to the ground state through a minimum energy crossing point (MECP S1/S0 ), resulting in the decrease of fluorescence efficiency. For the macrocycle, its inherent structural rigidity prohibits this non-radiative relaxation process and promotes the radiative relaxation, therefore emitting intense fluorescence. More significantly, MIEE strategy has good universality that several macrocycles with different luminophores also display emission improvement.

Abstract:Four carbazole derivatives, PTBPAC, PTPAC, BPTBPAC and BPTPAC, are designed and synthesized for broadening the carbazole-containing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. The compounds all contain a cofacial acceptor/donor/acceptor structural unit, in which two triphenyltriazine acceptors and one triphenylamine donor are fixed at the 1,9,8-positions of a single carbazole. The multiple π–π conjugations between the donor and acceptor powerfully restrict the mutual motion of the donor and acceptor, and thus create a firm sandwich structural TADF chromophore with intramolecular through-space charge transfer channels. Accordingly, the compounds exhibit high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields of up to 91% and short delayed lifetimes of 4.4–5.5 μs with extremely small single–triplet splitting energies. Their solution-processed devices achieve excellent electroluminescent (EL) performances with the maximum external quantum efficiency of up to 18.4%, a low turn-on voltage and a relatively small efficiency roll-off. The PL and EL properties are comparable to those of their counterparts with a donor/acceptor/donor structural unit.

Abstract:Two o-carborane-based π-conjugated macrocycles are synthesized via oxidative coupling of acetylene-terminated o-carborane precursors. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis unambiguously revealed their unique porous supramolecular structures, which display micropore characteristics. The novel macrocycles possess aggregation-induced emission both in aggregate state and solid state. This work provides a new design strategy for developing o-carborane macrocyclic molecules with excellent photophysical properties. Based on the obvious fluorescence quenching phenomenon of macrocycle by 1,4-dinitrobenzene and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol, the macrocyclic compounds have promising potential as sensors for nitroaromatics.

Abstract:Macrocyclic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have been demonstrated to realize high efficiency OLEDs, but the design concept was still confined to rigid π-conjugated structures. In this work, two macrocyclic TADF emitters, Cy-BNFu and CyEn-BNFu, with a flexible alkyl chain as a linker and bulky aromatic hydrocarbon wrapping units were designed and synthesized. The detailed photophysical analysis demonstrates that the flexible linker significantly enhances the solution-processibility and flexibility of the parent TADF core without sacrificing the radiative transition and high PLQY. Moreover, benefiting from sufficient encapsulation of both horizontal and vertical space, the macrocyclic CyEn-BNFu further isolated the TADF core and inhibited the aggregation caused quenching, which benefits the utilization of triplet excitons. As a result, the non-doped solution-processed OLEDs based on CyEn-BNFu exhibit high maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQE) up to 32.3%, which were 3 times higher than those of the devices based on the parent molecule. In particular, these macrocyclic TADF emitters ensure the fabrication of flexible OLEDs with higher brightness, color purity and bending resistance. This work opens a way to construct macrocyclic TADF emitters with a flexible alkyl chain linker and highlights the benefits of such encapsulated macrocycles for optimizing the performance of flexible solution-processed devices.
A general supramolecular strategy for fabricating full-color-tunable thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials

Abstract:Developing a facile and feasible strategy to fabricate thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials exhibiting full-color tunability remains an appealing yet challenging task. In this work, a general supramolecular strategy for fabricating thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials is proposed. Consequently, a series of host-guest cocrystals are prepared by electron-donating calix[3]acridan and various electron-withdrawing guests. Owing to the through-space charge transfer mediated by multiple noncovalent interactions, these cocrystals all display efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence. Especially, by delicately modulating the electron-withdrawing ability of the guest molecules, the emission colors of these cocrystals can be continuously tuned from blue (440 nm) to red (610 nm). Meanwhile, high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 87% is achieved. This research not only provides an alternative and general strategy for the fabrication of thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials, but also establishes a reliable supramolecular protocol toward the design of advanced luminescent materials.

Abstract:Organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF) emitters have attracted increasing concerns, owing to their atypical photophysical features that can pave the way to the innovative engineering applications. As cutting-edge type of luminescent molecules, however, most of them only exert a single-wavelength emission from the lowest excited state, according to Kasha’s rule. To develop their potential applications in multicolor luminescence and multi-functional luminescent probes for biological imaging, researchers have begun to turn their attention to design organic TADF molecules with dual-emission characteristics, by employing an additional fluorescence, phosphorescence, or TADF signal within a single-component system. We herein summarized the design principles as well as the luminescence mechanism of organic donor-acceptor TADF compounds with dual-emission characteristics, the superiority of which can cover unique material applications in modern luminescencerelated fields.
