Abstract:We demonstrate two efficient blue-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) compounds comprising a dimeric phenylcarbazole and four cyano substituents on the phenyl rings. A comparison of the 2,6-dicyano-substituted derivative (26IPNDCz) with the 3,5-dicyano-substituted derivative (35IPNDCz) shows that 26IPNDCz provides a larger dihedral angle and a lower decrease in the energy difference between the first singlet and triplet excited states (Delta E-ST) and the TADF lifetime. An organic light-emitting diode based on 26IPNDCz afforded an external quantum efficiency of 10% with reduced efficiency roll-off.

Abstract:Metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have emerged as promising candidate materials for highly efficient and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, a novel acceptor 2-cyanopyrazine is selected for the construction of blue TADF molecules via computer-assisted molecular design. Both theoretical prediction and experimental photophysical data indicate a small S1-T1 energy gap (ΔE ST) and a relative large fluorescence rate (k F) in an o-phenylene-bridged 2-cyanopyrazine/3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole compound (TCzPZCN). The k F value of 3.7 × 107 s-1 observed in a TCzPZCN doped film is among the highest in the TADF emitters with a ΔE ST smaller than 0.1 eV. Blue TADF emission is observed in a TCzPZCN doped film with a short TADF lifetime of 1.9 μs. The OLEDs using TCzPZCN as emitter exhibit a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.6% with low-efficiency roll-off. A sky-blue device containing a derivative of TCzPZCN achieves an improved EQE maximum of 12.2% by suppressing the non-radiative decay at T1.

Abstract:Blue thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters are promising for the next generation of organic light-emitting diodes, yet their performance still cannot meet the requirements for commercialization. Here we establish a design rule for highly efficient and stable thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters by introducing an auxiliary acceptor that could delocalize electron distributions, enhancing molecular stability in both the negative polaron and triplet excited state, while also accelerating triplet-to-singlet up-conversion and singlet radiative processes simultaneously. Proof-of-concept thermally activated delayed fluorescent compounds, based on a multi-carbazole-benzonitrile structure, exhibit near-unity photoluminescent quantum yields, short-lived delays and improved photoluminescent and electroluminescent stabilities. A deep-blue organic light-emitting diode using one of these molecules as a sensitizer for a multi-resonance emitter achieves a remarkable time to 95% of initial luminance of 221 h at an initial luminance of 1,000 cd m-2, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 30.8% and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.14, 0.17).

Abstract:The π-conjugation of molecules has a large influence on their excited state properties, especially for red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Two orange-red TADF compounds comprising dual dicyano-substituted pyrazine/quinoxaline acceptors have been designed and synthesized. TPA-2DCNQ (3,3'-((phenylazanediyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(2-phenylquinoxaline-6,7-dicarbonitrile) with extended π-conjugated quinoxaline as the acceptor exhibits higher photoluminescence quantum yields (ca. 0.67-0.71) in doped films. A smaller energy splitting (ΔEst ) between the first singlet excited state and triplet excited state is also achieved, indicating that extending the π-conjugation of the acceptor rationally is an effective approach to designing highly efficient long-wavelength TADF materials. Devices with TPA-2DCNQ as the emitter display maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 12.6-14.0 %, which are more than twice those of devices containing TPA-2DCNPZ (6,6'-((phenylazanediyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(5-phenylpyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile).

Abstract:Four carbazole derivatives, PTBPAC, PTPAC, BPTBPAC and BPTPAC, are designed and synthesized for broadening the carbazole-containing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. The compounds all contain a cofacial acceptor/donor/acceptor structural unit, in which two triphenyltriazine acceptors and one triphenylamine donor are fixed at the 1,9,8-positions of a single carbazole. The multiple π–π conjugations between the donor and acceptor powerfully restrict the mutual motion of the donor and acceptor, and thus create a firm sandwich structural TADF chromophore with intramolecular through-space charge transfer channels. Accordingly, the compounds exhibit high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields of up to 91% and short delayed lifetimes of 4.4–5.5 μs with extremely small single–triplet splitting energies. Their solution-processed devices achieve excellent electroluminescent (EL) performances with the maximum external quantum efficiency of up to 18.4%, a low turn-on voltage and a relatively small efficiency roll-off. The PL and EL properties are comparable to those of their counterparts with a donor/acceptor/donor structural unit.

Abstract:A novel thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter, DCNP-SCF, is developed based on a dicyanophenanthrene acceptor. DCNP-SCF is prepared by a simple C-N coupling reaction. Its thermal, theoretical, photophysical, and electroluminescent properties are investigated, emphasizing its potential in organic electroluminescence devices. DCNP-SCF demonstrates highly distorted donor–acceptor conformation, facilitating significant TADF for efficient triplet harvesting in electroluminescence devices. Additionally, due to the moderate electron push–pull effect, DCNP-SCF exhibits appropriate intramolecular charge transfer for considerable photoluminescence quantum yield for electroluminescence applications.

Abstract:Solution-processed devices with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) compounds have gained great attention due to their low cost and high performance. Here, two solution-processable TADF emitters named ACCz-DPyM and POxCz-DPyM were synthesized by coupled 9,10-dihydro-9,9-dimethylacridine or phenoxazine modified carbazole as donor with di(pyridin-3-yl)methanone as acceptor. Both TADF compounds show same small ΔΕST of 0.04 eV and high PLQY of 66.2% and 58.2%. The devices fabricated by ACCz-DPyM and POxCz-DPyM as emitters show excellent performance as solution-processed with low turn-on voltage of 4.0 and 3.4 V, high luminance of 6209 and 3248 cd m−2 at 8 V, the maximum current efficiency of 9.9 and 15.9 cd A−1, the maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.6% and 6.5% and low efficiency roll-off. The solution-processed device based on ACCz-DPyM shows bluish-green emission. These results show that ACCz-DPyM and POxCz-DPyM are suitable for solution processing devices.

Abstract:Three carbazole derivatives, AcPTC, PxPTC and PtPTC, consisting of two 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine, phenoxazine or phenothiazine donor groups and one diphenyltriazine acceptor group fixed at 1,8,9-positions of a single carbazole ring via phenylene, are designed and synthesized. X-ray diffraction analysis of AcPTC reveals that there exist multiple π-π interactions between the donor and acceptor groups to form a sandwich-like structural unit with edge-to-face interaction model. The compounds thus show obvious thermally activated delayed fluorescence with through-space charge transfer character and possess considerable photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 73% in doped films with sky-blue to yellow emissions. The solution-processed electroluminescent devices achieve the highest maximum external quantum efficiencies of 10.0%, 11% and 5.6% for AcPTC, PxPTC and PtPTC, respectively, with small efficiency roll-offs.

Abstract:A new thermally activated delayed fluorescent molecule, TRZ 3(Ph-PTZ), containing three phenothiazines as donor units and a 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine as the acceptor unit was synthesized using a simple cost-effective method based on a cobalt catalyzed cross-coupling. This compound was tested in organic light-emitting diodes and was found to show superior yellowish-green electroluminescence performance with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 17.4% and a maximum luminance value of 7430 cd/m2.

Abstract:A new sky-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitter TRZ-DCF, has been developed based on 2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-7,7-dimethyl-5,7-dihydroindeno[2,1-b]carbazole (DCF) as donor and 2,4-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazine as acceptor. Due to the fusion of fluorene and carbazole moieties into the single carbazole donor, the multimodified emitter exhibits obvious TADF characteristics with a smaller singlet-triplet splitting (ΔEST) value of 0.22 eV and relatively high photoluminance quantum yield (PLQY) of 84%. As a result, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 18.7%, a current efficiency (CE) of 39.0 cd A−1 and a power efficiency (PE) of 30.5 lm W−1 with a Commission Internationale de L’ Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.18, 0.34), significantly surpassing the performance of the reference emitter 9-(4-(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole (TRTZ), are achieved in optimal device construction. It is found that the EQE roll-off (20.8%) of TRZ-DCF is acceptable, that the efficiency drops to 14.8% at 1000 cd m−2 in optimal device construction. These results demonstrate the multiple modifications of weak electron-donating carbazole donor is an effective way of constructing high-efficiency blue TADF emitters with small roll-off.
