Abstract:A lack of an efficient and stable blue device is a critical factor restricting the development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, which is currently expected to be overcome by employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Here, we investigate the TADF and electroluminescence (EL) performance of six carbazole/triphenyltriazine derivatives in different hosts. A good linearity between lg(LT50/kF2) and the EL emission wavelength is found, where LT50 is the half-life of the devices and kF is the fluorescence rate of the emitters, suggesting the dominance of the singlet exciton energy and lifetime in the device stability. An indolylcarbazole/triphenyltriazine derivative (ICz-TRZ) with the capability to suppress solid-state solvation exhibits blueshifted emission and an increased kF (1.5×108 s-1) in comparison to the control emitters in doped films. ICz-TRZ-based devices realize a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 18% and an EQE of 5.5% at a very high luminance of 7×104 cd/m2. Ignoring the poor electrochemical stability of ICz-TRZ, the device offers an LT50 approaching 100 hr under an initial luminance of 1000 cd/m2 and CIE coordinates of (0.14, 0.19). The findings in this work suggested that computer-aided design of high kF TADF emitters can be an approach to realizing efficient and stable blue OLEDs.
Delocalizing electron distribution in thermally activated delayed fluorophors for high-efficiency and long-lifetime blue electroluminescence

Abstract:Blue thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters are promising for the next generation of organic light-emitting diodes, yet their performance still cannot meet the requirements for commercialization. Here we establish a design rule for highly efficient and stable thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters by introducing an auxiliary acceptor that could delocalize electron distributions, enhancing molecular stability in both the negative polaron and triplet excited state, while also accelerating triplet-to-singlet up-conversion and singlet radiative processes simultaneously. Proof-of-concept thermally activated delayed fluorescent compounds, based on a multi-carbazole-benzonitrile structure, exhibit near-unity photoluminescent quantum yields, short-lived delays and improved photoluminescent and electroluminescent stabilities. A deep-blue organic light-emitting diode using one of these molecules as a sensitizer for a multi-resonance emitter achieves a remarkable time to 95% of initial luminance of 221 h at an initial luminance of 1,000 cd m-2, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 30.8% and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.14, 0.17).

Abstract:Conventional thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules achieve small energy differences between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states (EEST) by enhancing the intramolecular charge transfer, which inevitably leads to a wide emission spectrum and low fluorescence rate. Here, we prepared a deep blue TADF molecule via a small EEST pyridine-phenol fluoroboron complex as the acceptor. The small EEST is maintained when carbazole donors are attached to the 4-position of the phenyl rings in the fluoroboron complex. Benefiting from the strong electron coupling between the donor (D) and acceptor (A) moieties, the compound Cz-4-BF exhibits a high fluorescence rate of 4.8 x 108 s- 1 and a small D-A dihedral angle change in the excited state. Consequently, a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of nearly 100% and a PL spectrum with full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) < 60 nm were obtained in solution and low-concentration doped films. A TADFsensitized fluorescence (TSF) device containing Cz-4-BF achieves an external quantum efficiency of 21%, which is higher than the devices employing classical fluorescent emitters and multiple resonance-type TADF emitters. The Cz-4-BF-based TSF device shows significantly improved color coordinates of (0.14, 0.10) versus a control device without Cz-4-BF.

Abstract:Metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have emerged as promising candidate materials for highly efficient and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, a novel acceptor 2-cyanopyrazine is selected for the construction of blue TADF molecules via computer-assisted molecular design. Both theoretical prediction and experimental photophysical data indicate a small S1-T1 energy gap (ΔE ST) and a relative large fluorescence rate (k F) in an o-phenylene-bridged 2-cyanopyrazine/3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole compound (TCzPZCN). The k F value of 3.7 × 107 s-1 observed in a TCzPZCN doped film is among the highest in the TADF emitters with a ΔE ST smaller than 0.1 eV. Blue TADF emission is observed in a TCzPZCN doped film with a short TADF lifetime of 1.9 μs. The OLEDs using TCzPZCN as emitter exhibit a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.6% with low-efficiency roll-off. A sky-blue device containing a derivative of TCzPZCN achieves an improved EQE maximum of 12.2% by suppressing the non-radiative decay at T1.

Abstract:Two thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) deep-blue emitters (4-SCZ, 4-SCZ-F) were developed by combining a novel spiro-type donor moiety with different triazine-based unit. By modifying the interplay between the donors and acceptor through tuning the phenylene linker using a fluorine substituent, singlet-triplet splitting (Delta E-ST) can be regulated. In addition, the rigid geometry of these emitters also ensures their high photoluminance quantum yield (PLQY). As a result, when applied 4-SCZ-F as the emitter, good performance with current efficiency (CE)/power efficiency (PE)/external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 11.16 cd/A/9.74 lm/W/7.21% and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at (0.16, 0.17) was achieved.

Abstract:Singlet-singlet exciton annihilation (SSA) is found to be a critical factor for the decomposition of blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Since radiative decay is a competitive process against bimolecular SSA, increasing the fluorescence rate (k(F)) of the blue TADF emitters can significantly prolong the device's operational lifetime by reducing the singlet exciton concentration at a given luminance level.

Abstract:The combination of electrooxidation and photooxidation efficiently decomposes the high-energy triplets of emitters, which is the main reason for the unavailablilty of stable blue thermally activated delayed fuorescence (TADF) OLEDs. The lightning represents photooxidation and the stream represents electrooxidation. The process of electrooxidation and photooxidation in TADF emitters can be suppressed though molecule design and device engineering, as reported by C. Adachi and co-workers on page 7620. Finally, the sky-blue TADF OLEDs realize an increase of three orders of magnitude in device lifetime following these principles.

Abstract:Efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been characterized for a carbazole/sulfone derivative in both solutions and doped films. A pure blue organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on this compound demonstrates a very high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of nearly 10% at low current density. Because TADF only occurs in a bipolar system where donor and acceptor centered (3)ππ* states are close to or higher than the triplet intramolecular charge transfer ((3)CT) state, control of the π-conjugation length of both donor and acceptor is considered to be as important as breaking the π-conjugation between them in blue TADF material design.

Abstract:Highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have attracted much attention in recent years. Efficient TADF mainly occurs in charge-transfer (CT) molecules. Here, we demonstrate that a small dipole moment for TADF emitters in the S-1 state is key for device stability by comparing two green TADF emitters with the same moieties but different types of linker. The compound 1AC-TRZ with a 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine donor and a triphenyltriazine acceptor attached at the 1- and N-positions of carbazole has a smaller excited-state dipole moment (11 D) than the 3- and N-substituted analog 3AC-TRZ (30 D). Although the emission spectra and efficiencies of their devices are similar, the operational lifetime of the 1AC-TRZ-based device is much longer than that of the 3AC-TRZ-based device. Time-resolved emission spectra indicate that the S-1 energy of 3AC-TRZ in doped films is higher than that of 1AC-TRZ at the start of nanosecond solvation experiment suggests that the short-term existence (<1 ns) of high energy (>2.9 eV) excitons induced degradation in films. Our study reveals a relationship between solid-state solvation and new guideline for designing stable green and blue TADF emitters.

Abstract:A high triplet energy (T1) is usually taken as the prerequisite of the good exciton confinement of electron transporting materials (ETMs); however, there is usually a tradeoff with large mobility and stability. Here, we demonstrated that good exciton confinement can also be realized utilizing a low-T1 ETM with a sterically shielding low-T1 unit. Given the short-range interaction of the Dexter energy transfer, the large steric side groups of the low-T1 ETM can effectively hinder the T1 of the emitters from being quenched by increasing the intermolecular distance. Based on this concept, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) as high as 21.3% was observed in the sky-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence device using a low-T1 ETM, with the EQE remaining at 21.2% at 1000 cd/m2 and 17.8% at 5000 cd/m2. Further, an EQEmax as high as 25.5%, a low turn-on voltage of 2.3 V, as well as a long T90 of over 400 h at an initial luminance of 5000 cd/m2 were achieved for green phosphorescent devices. This work highlights a viable strategy for developing high-performance ETMs, paving their way toward practical applications.

Abstract:Efficient blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials with intramolecular hydrogen bonds are developed. They exhibit high thermal stability, excellent photoluminescence quantum yields, and large horizontal dipole ratios and can provide outstanding electroluminescence efficiencies with long device operational lifetimes. Efficient blue organic luminescent materials are highly desired for full‐color displays and white lighting based on the organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) technique, but the exploration of robust blue emitters remains challenging. In this work, a series of efficient blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials comprised of a benzonitrile acceptor, pyridine bridge, and carbazole‐based donors is designed and synthesized. Intramolecular hydrogen bonds are formed in these molecules, which improve molecular planarity and rigidity. These molecules exhibit excellent thermal stability, high photoluminescence quantum yields, and large horizontal dipole ratios. Highly efficient non‐doped and doped OLEDs are fabricated using these molecules as emitters, providing deep‐blue to sky‐blue lights with outstanding maximum external quantum efficiencies and good operational device lifetime. These results indicate that building intramolecular hydrogen bonds can be an effective strategy for the construction of efficient and robust blue emitters for OLED applications.

Abstract:Solution-processed devices with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) compounds have gained great attention due to their low cost and high performance. Here, two solution-processable TADF emitters named ACCz-DPyM and POxCz-DPyM were synthesized by coupled 9,10-dihydro-9,9-dimethylacridine or phenoxazine modified carbazole as donor with di(pyridin-3-yl)methanone as acceptor. Both TADF compounds show same small ΔΕST of 0.04 eV and high PLQY of 66.2% and 58.2%. The devices fabricated by ACCz-DPyM and POxCz-DPyM as emitters show excellent performance as solution-processed with low turn-on voltage of 4.0 and 3.4 V, high luminance of 6209 and 3248 cd m−2 at 8 V, the maximum current efficiency of 9.9 and 15.9 cd A−1, the maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.6% and 6.5% and low efficiency roll-off. The solution-processed device based on ACCz-DPyM shows bluish-green emission. These results show that ACCz-DPyM and POxCz-DPyM are suitable for solution processing devices.

Abstract:Efficient deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are still very scarce. It is available to render the color bluer by reducing the intensity of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) between acceptor and donor. Here, attaching the acceptor of six-membered heterocyclic diphenylsulfone-derivative (2PTO) with donors (DMAc and DPAc), two compounds, 2-(9,9-dimethyl-acridin-10(9H)-yl)-10-phenyl-10H-phenothiazine 5,5-dioxide (DMAC2PTO) and 2-(9,9-diphenylacridin-10(9H)-yl)-10-phenyl-10H-phenothiazine 5,5-dioxide (DPAC2PTO) were designed and synthesized. Due to the largely twisted configuration and weak ICT, DMAC2PTO with small singlet-triplet energy gap (Delta E-ST) displayed TADF feature and deep-blue emission. Moreover, DPAC2PTO exhibited much lower photoluminescence quantum yield (PLOY) than DMAC2PTO. The doped device of DMAC2PTO achieved a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) of 15.2% with a deepblue color coordinate (CIEx,y) of (0.154, 0.108), and showed a narrow emission spectra with a 52 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM). In addition, the non-doped device of DMAC2PTO reached the EQE(max) of 8.36% with CIEx,y of (0.158, 0.157).
Towards Efficient Blue Delayed- Fluorescence Molecules by Modulating Torsion Angle Between Electron Donor and Acceptor

Abstract:Constructing blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials for high-performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) remains challenging due to the intrinsically strong intramolecular charge transfer nature of the nearly orthogonal connection of electron donor (D) and acceptor (A), which results in long-wavelength emission. Herein, an effective delayed-fluorescence design strategy of modulating D-A torsion angles is proposed and efficient sky-blue, pure-blue, and deep-blue delayed-fluorescence molecules consisting of a xanthenone acceptor and carbazole-based donors are created by decreasing the torsion angles. They exhibit strong delayed fluorescence with high photoluminescence quantum yields of 85-94% in doped films, and their delayed -fluorescence lifetimes are elongated from 1.0 to 27.6 mu s as the torsion angles decrease. These molecules can function as excellent emitters in OLEDs, providing efficient electroluminescence peaking at 442 nm (CIEx,y = 0.15, 0.08), 462 nm (CIEx,y = 0.15, 0.18), and 482 nm (CIEx,y = 0.17, 0.30) with state-of-the-art external quantum efficiencies of up to 22.2%, 33.7%, and 32.1%, respectively, demonstrating the proposed molecular design for efficient blue delayed-fluorescence molecules is successful and promising.
Blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters based on a constructing strategy with diversed donors and oxadiazole acceptor and their efficient electroluminescent devices

Abstract:A series of highly efficient blue emission compounds with D-A-D molecular structures were designed and synthesized, in which oxadiazole group was used as electronic acceptor (A), and carbazole/acridine groups as electronic donor (D). It is found that the compounds containing acridine both had small energy splitting between singlet excited state (S1) and triplet excited state (T1) (that is, ΔEST) and thus showed distinct thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics. Moreover, they both had high photoluminescent quantum yields (PLQY) even up to 93%. In comparison, the compound only containing carbazole just showed prompt emission but no delayed fluorescence. The blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using the TADF compounds as emitters achieved a high maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQE) up to 22.3% with Commission Internationale de L'e'clairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.24). Triplet excitons were efficiently utilized in the device. The further optimized OLEDs achieved more outstanding comprehensive performance.
Intramolecular‐Locked High Efficiency Ultrapure Violet‐Blue (CIE‐y <0.046) Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters Exhibiting Amplified Spontaneous Emission

Abstract:Rational manipulation of frontier orbital distribution and singlet‐triplet splitting is crucial to exploit the luminescent properties of organic molecules. To realize ultra‐blue luminescence, both blue‐shifted wavelength peak (λpeak) and narrow full‐width at half‐maximum (FWHM) are required. Herein, a new thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) skeleton by inserting the diphenyl methylene intramolecular‐lock to adjust the torsion angles and restrict the intramolecular relaxation is developed. Two rigid emitters, incorporating phenoxazine (PXZN‐B) and acridine (DMACN‐B) as donors and mesitylboron as an acceptor, exhibit narrow FWHMs (<50 nm) with deep‐blue (0.133, 0.147) and violet‐blue emission (0.151, 0.045), respectively. In particular, the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of a DMACN‐B‐based device closely approach the Rec.2020 standard (0.131, 0.046). Moreover, both of the organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on PXZN‐B and DMACN‐B show TADF character, with high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 10%. Furthermore, owing to the large orbital overlap, these TADF emitters own a fast S1–S0 transition rate exceeding 108 s–1, thereby exhibiting marked amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) with low thresholds. Therefore, the intramolecular‐lock strategy provides not only innovation for realizing high‐efficiency deep‐blue TADF emission with high color purity but also an avenue for a TADF‐based ASE and lasing application.

Molecular Engineering of Pyrimidine-Containing Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters for Highly Efficient Deep-Blue (CIE Y < 0.06) Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:The development of efficient and robust, deep-blue, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, especially those matching the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) standard with Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.15, 0.06), is one of the challenging issues in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Through sophisticated molecular engineering, two novel pyrimidine derivatives with D-π-A configuration, 5-(4-(2,6-diphenylpyrimidin-4-yl)phenyl)-5H-benzofuro[3,2-c]carbazole (pBFCz-26DPPM) and 5-(4-(2,6-diphenylpyrimidin-4-yl)phenyl)-5H-benzo [4,5]thieno[3,2-c]carbazole (pBTCz-26DPPM) have been designed and synthesized. There are only negligible differences in the molecular configuration and thermal, electrochemical and photophysical properties for the two compounds. However, TADF properties can be tuned by changing the heteroatom in the donor moiety. Compound pBFCz-26DPPM offers a shorter delayed fluorescence lifetime (τd) than that of pBTCz-26DPPM. The optimized device serving pBFCz-26DPPM as dopant presents deep-blue Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.154, 0.054) and maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEmax) of 6.20%. Remarkably, no-doped device based on pBFCz--26DPPM delivers CIE coordinates of (0.153, 0.067) and EQEs as high as 5.80%. These device performances are amongst some of those of the best performing deep blue TADF OLEDs with similar color gamut.
Singlet-Triplet Splitting Energy Management Via Acceptor Substitution: Complanation Molecular Design For Deep-Blue Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters And Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Application

Abstract:A barely reached balance between weak intramolecular-charge-transfer (ICT) and small singlet-triplet splitting energy (Delta E-ST) for reverse intersystem crossing from non-emissive triplet state to radiative singlet state impedes the realization of deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. By discarding the twisted-ICT framework for a flattened molecular backbone and introducing a strong acceptor possessing n-pi* transition character, hypsochromic color, a large radiative rate (k(F)), and small Delta E-ST are achieved simultaneously. Six molecules with a 9,9-dimethyl-10-phenyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (i-DMAc) donor are synthesized and investigated. Coinciding with time-dependent density functional theory, the reduced dihedral angles between donor (D) and acceptor (A) weaken ICT from dispersed charge density and enable a large k(F) from increased frontier molecular orbitals overlap. Despite the separated highest occupied (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) population, the intercalation of phenyl bridges between D-A increases k(F) but significantly lowers the local triplet excited state, indicating small HOMO and LUMO overlap is not a sufficient, but necessary condition for reduced Delta E-ST. Integrating short conjugation length and carbonyl or triazine acceptors into the complanation molecules, deep-blue TADF organic light-emitting diodes demonstrate maximum external quantum efficiencies of 11.5% and 10.9% with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.16, 0.09) and (0.15, 0.11), respectively, which is quite close to the stringent National Television System Committee blue standard.
