Abstract:Multicolor luminescent materials offer promising optoelectronic applications, especially organic solid-state crystalline materials. Herein, we introduce a cocrystal strategy to precisely regulate the multicolor photoluminescence behaviors of microcrystals through charge transfer (CT) interactions based on two components. Thereinto, compared with the single-component CzC6Cz (1,5-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-pentane) microcrystals, the fluorescence emissions of sky-blue color CzC6Cz/TFIP(2,4,5,6-tetrafluoroisophthalonitrile) microcrystals, green color CzC6Cz/TFTP (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile) microcrystals, and red color CzC6Cz/TCNB (1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene) microcrystals all present significant red shifts, and the degree of the red-shifted emissions is 56, 104, and 221 nm, respectively, while the fluorescence emission of CzC6Cz/FA (p-Fluoranil) microcrystals was completely quenched due to the existence of strong noncovalent intermolecular interactions between the electron donor (CzC6Cz) and acceptor (FA), which was also confirmed by the theoretical calculation. Moreover, all four cocrystals adopt ordered and layered molecular stacking patterns, in which the electron acceptors were caught in the middle of the adjacent electron donors. Therefore, this work provides a promising strategy to expand versatile solid-state crystalline materials with anticipated function and properties.

Abstract:Organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF) emitters have attracted increasing concerns, owing to their atypical photophysical features that can pave the way to the innovative engineering applications. As cutting-edge type of luminescent molecules, however, most of them only exert a single-wavelength emission from the lowest excited state, according to Kasha’s rule. To develop their potential applications in multicolor luminescence and multi-functional luminescent probes for biological imaging, researchers have begun to turn their attention to design organic TADF molecules with dual-emission characteristics, by employing an additional fluorescence, phosphorescence, or TADF signal within a single-component system. We herein summarized the design principles as well as the luminescence mechanism of organic donor-acceptor TADF compounds with dual-emission characteristics, the superiority of which can cover unique material applications in modern luminescencerelated fields.

Abstract:Organic luminescent materials with the ability to reversibly switch the luminescence when subjected to external stimuli have attracted considerable interest in recent years. However, the examples of luminescent materials that exhibit multiresponsive properties are rarely reported. In this work, a new stimuli-responsive dye P1 is designed and synthesized with two identical chromophores of naphthalimide, one at each side of an amidoamine-based spacer. This amide-rich molecule offers many possibilities for forming intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions. Particularly, P1 has an intrinsic property of cocrystallizing with methanol. Compared with the pristine P1 sample, the as-prepared two-component cocrystalline material displays an exceptive deep-blue emission, which is extremely rare among naphthalimide-based molecules in the solid state. Furthermore, the target material exhibits an obvious mechanochromic fluorescent behavior and a large spectral shift under force stimuli. On the other hand, the cocrystalline material shows an unusual "turn off" thermochromic luminescence accompanied by solvent evaporation. Moreover, using external stimuli to reversibly manipulate fluorescent quantum yields is rarely reported to date. The results demonstrate the feasibility of a new design strategy for solid-state luminescence switching materials: the incorporation of solvents into organic compounds by cocrystallization to obtain a crystalline state luminescence system.

Abstract:Ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials provide exciting opportunities for the rational design of persistent luminescence owing to their long-lived excitons. However, conventional rare-earth-based all-inorganic emitters involve high cost and harsh synthesis conditions, and purely organic systems may require complicated synthesis routes and tedious purification. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop a cost-effective and easily manufacturable method for achieving color-tunable RTP-TADF with a long afterglow. Herein, we demonstrate a rational strategy to introduce different anions (Cl-, Br- and OAc- ions) into a Zn-based metal-organic scaffold, which can improve the crystal rigidity and achieve a well-balanced RTP-TADF. Both theoretical and experimental studies have demonstrated that the adjustment of different anions can effectively modulate the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and the energy gap of singlet-triplet states (ΔEST) and then tailor the afterglow lifetime. Moreover, we prepared dye-doped metal-organic hybrid glasses with remarkable potential for the color-tunable afterglow. Therefore, this work not only provides a new horizon for modulating crystal and glass states with color/lifetime-tunable persistent luminescence, but also contributes to optical information storage and anti-counterfeiting technology.
Achieving Controllable Thermochromic Fluorescence via Synergistic Intramolecular Charge Transfer and Molecular Packing

Abstract:Thermochromic fluorescent materials (TFMs) have attracted significant attention due to their unique fluorescent colorimetric response to temperature. However, existing TFMs still suffer from weak stimulus responsiveness, broad temperature response ranges, uncontrollable emission color changes, and low quantum yields. In this study, we address these issues by designing and synthesizing three diketone-boron complexes with distinct emission wavelengths (NWPU-(2-4)). Utilizing a molecular engineering strategy to manipulate intramolecular charge transfer transitions and molecular packing modes, our synthesized complexes exhibit efficient fluorescence emission in both solution and solid states. Moreover, their emission wavelengths are highly sensitive to environmental polarity. By incorporating these compounds into thermosensitive matrices of long-chain alkanes, we produced TFMs with varied fluorescence emission peak variation ranges. Notably, the TFM based on NWPU-4, owing to its strong charge transfer transitions and dense J-aggregate packing configuration, not only exhibits intense fluorescence emission spanning the deep red to near-infrared spectrum but also displays a remarkable 90 nm broad range of thermochromic properties. Ultimately, it was successfully applied to programmable, thermally controlled, multi-level information encryption.

Abstract:The construction of full‐color fluorescence systems has received widespread attention because of their applications in lighting materials, optoelectronic materials, and fluorescent probes. However, for the full‐color luminescence system based on trichromatic materials, there are no connections between materials of different luminescent colors. Herein, A new donor‐acceptor dye with red fluorescence was synthesized. The dye displays excellent optical properties of short half‐peak width and strong fluorescence emission. An effective energy transfer process from the dansyl donor to the acceptor was observed with a transfer efficiency of 81%. Further, dyes with green and blue fluorescence were introduced to construct a full‐spectrum fluorescent system. Through exchange reactions of Diels‐Alder dynamic covalent bonds, red, green, and blue luminescence can be converted. This work provides a new idea for the design of full‐color fluorescent materials.

Host – Guest Systems Enhanced Solution and Solid-State Emission and Tunable White-Light Emission Harvested by Supramolecular Approaches

Abstract:Organic luminescent materials with high quantum yields and/or white-light-emitting properties in particular play a crucial role in labeling and optoelectronic devices. In this work we have synthesized a new 2,3,6,7-tetramethoxy9,10-di-p-tolylanthracene-bridged pillar[5]arene dimer with persistent mazarine blue fluorescent emission and much higher quantum yields in both solution and the solid state in comparison with its corresponding emissive linker without pillarene units, which exhibits typical aggregation-caused quenching. According to the fluorescence data and singlecrystal analyses, their contrasting fluorescent performances can be rationally ascribed to their different stacking structures and intermolecular interactions. Three fluorescent guests containing different chromophores and/or terminal binding sites have also been synthesized to interact with the pillar[5]arene dimer to construct supramolecular ensembles with highly controllable luminescence, taking advantage of the stimuli-responsive properties of the supramolecular host–guest interactions. Intriguingly, multicolor fluorescence, including white-light emission (0.31, 0.35), which is in high demand, has been achieved by tuning the molar ratio of the host and guest and/or by changing the solvent system. This strategy holds great potential for the design and development of fluorescent materials with high quantum yields, controllable emission wavelength, and good stimuli-responsiveness.

Delocalizing electron distribution in thermally activated delayed fluorophors for high-efficiency and long-lifetime blue electroluminescence

Abstract:Blue thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters are promising for the next generation of organic light-emitting diodes, yet their performance still cannot meet the requirements for commercialization. Here we establish a design rule for highly efficient and stable thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters by introducing an auxiliary acceptor that could delocalize electron distributions, enhancing molecular stability in both the negative polaron and triplet excited state, while also accelerating triplet-to-singlet up-conversion and singlet radiative processes simultaneously. Proof-of-concept thermally activated delayed fluorescent compounds, based on a multi-carbazole-benzonitrile structure, exhibit near-unity photoluminescent quantum yields, short-lived delays and improved photoluminescent and electroluminescent stabilities. A deep-blue organic light-emitting diode using one of these molecules as a sensitizer for a multi-resonance emitter achieves a remarkable time to 95% of initial luminance of 221 h at an initial luminance of 1,000 cd m-2, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 30.8% and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.14, 0.17).

Abstract:We combine synthetic supramolecular chemistry and materials science to develop novel exciplexes for thermally activated delayed fluorescence. Our approach starts from a bowl-shaped acceptor molecule for which we synthesize tailor-made donors that bind in a lock-and-key fashion. The donor design is guided by extensive density functional theory calculations of three independent donor families. The investigation of a large number of custom-synthesized donors allows us to derive empirical relationships for the prediction of the exciplex emission color. Incorporated within organic light-emitting devices, the lock-and-key exciplexes yield external quantum efficiencies of up to 5.4%, with potentially tunable emission color across the blue and green visible spectrum.

Abstract:Abstract Regulating the fluorescent properties of organic small molecules in a controlled and dynamic manner has been a fundamental research goal. Although several strategies have been exploited, realizing multi-color molecular emission from a single fluorophore remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate an emissive system by combining pyrene fluorophore and acylhydrazone units, which can generate multi-color switchable fluorescent emissions at different assembled states. Two kinds of supramolecular tools, amphiphilic self-assembly and γ-cyclodextrin mediated host-guest recognition, are used to manipulate the intermolecular aromatic stacking distances, resulting in the tunable fluorescent emission ranging from blue to yellow, including a pure white-light emission. Moreover, an external chemical signal, amylase, is introduced to control the assembly states of the system on a time scale, generating a distinct dynamic emission system. The dynamic properties of this multi-color fluorescent system can be also enabled in a hydrogel network, exhibiting a promising potential for intelligent fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Multicolor luminescent materials with tunable properties hold great promise for a wide range of applications in materials science. Unfortunately, the conventional approach to achieving multicolor emissions by blending multiple types of fluorophores is hindered by limitations, notably, spectral instability, aggregation-caused quenching, and energy transfer. The pursuit of multicolor emissions from a single type of fluorophore in the solid state has, until now, remained a formidable challenge. In this study, we have introduced N,N′-diphenyl dihydrodibenzo[a,c]-phenazines (DPAC), augmented with two o-carboranyl units, to create a novel fluorophore CbDPAC. The CbDPAC crystal exhibits three distinct emission bands peaking at 405, 470, and 620 nm, respectively, arising from a rich intermolecular interaction network that generates novel emission centers, such as conformational isomers and excimers. This work inspires the rational molecular engineering of smart fluorophores with tailorable properties and inaugurates diverse possibilities for stimuli-responsive luminescent technologies.

Abstract:Regulating the luminescence color of single fluorescent component via non-covalent interactions has attracted considerable attentions in recent years, as its dynamic and controllable nature is favorable to develop smart luminescent materials. Herein, a supramolecular photoluminescence system with tunable fluorescence emissions ranging from yellow to green was successfully fabricated by assembling a simple fluorescent molecule, 4-(pyren-1-yl)-1-(4-vinylbenzyl)pyridin-1-ium chloride (PPD), and cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n], n = 7, 8) via host-guest interactions. Upon this assembly, PPD possessed a dramatically enhanced emission efficiency as well as a longer fluorescence lifetime. Such dynamically controllable properties with tunable fluorescence emissions enabled PPD-based assembly to be applied as fluorescent ink and have a potential in information encryption material.

Abstract:Dynamic tuning of single-color and multi-color (including white-light) luminescence has attracted much attention for applications in various fields; however, effective systems are still scarcity to date. Herein, we report the construction of host-guest metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) serves as an effective strategy to achieve the excitation- and time-dependent long afterglow and white light emitting, simultaneously. The guest-induced structural distortion modulates the single-triplet state intersystem crossing, promotes ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) in layer-column MOFs, and further boosts multiple exciton generation of triplet states for multi-color ultralong phosphorescence, as indicated by both experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. By further doping of dyes into MOFs, white-light emitting with tunable color temperature can be facilely obtained, which has been further fabricated into white-light light-emitting diode (LED) with color rendering index of 88.4, higher than that of most as-reported pure inorganics and inorganic-organic hybrid systems. Therefore, this work not only describes a host-guest energy transfer route for dynamic tailoring wide range of color-tunable long-afterglow, but also explores the application prospect of new white-light materials with high color rendering and low blue light for promising display and lighting applications.

Abstract:Benzophenone skeletons containing a carbonyl unit (O=C) have been widely used as electron acceptors in the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Herein, we present a novel molecular design concept for TADF materials by transitioning from a carbonyl to an amide (O=C–N) skeleton as the acceptor. The amide unit, compared to its carbonyl counterpart, offers a more stable electronic configuration. Leveraging this insight, we have developed a series of high-performance TADF molecules based on benzoyl carbazole and carbazoline acceptors. These molecules exhibit exceptionally small singlet-triplet energy gaps and pronounced aggregation-enhanced emission properties, achieving photoluminescence quantum yields in neat films as high as 99%. Consequently, these materials serve as efficient emitters in non-doped organic light-eimtting diodes (OLEDs), reaching a maximum quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of up to 26.0%, significantly higher than the 17.0% obtained with benzophenone acceptor-based TADF molecules. Additionally, they have been used as TADF hosts in narrowband red fluorescent OLEDs, setting a record-high EQEmax of 22.4%.

Abstract:Organic luminogens constitute promising prototypes for various optoelectronic applications. Since gaining distinct color emissions normally requires the alternation of the conjugated backbone, big issues remain in material synthetic cost and skeleton compatibility while pursuing full-color luminescence. Upon a facile one-step coupling, three simple but smart perchalcogenated (O, S, and Se) arenes are synthesized. They exhibit strong luminescent tricolor primaries (i.e., blue, green, and red, respectively) in the solid state with a superior quantum yield up to >40% (5-10 times higher than that in corresponding solutions). The properties originate from a fluorescence-phosphorescence-phosphorescence triple-channel emission effect, which is regulated by S and Se heavy atoms-dependent intersystem crossing upon molecular packing, as well as Se-Se atom interaction-caused energy splittings. Consequently, full-color luminescence, including a typical white-light luminescence with a Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage coordinate of (0.30, 0.35), is realized by complementarily incorporating these tricolor luminescent materials in the film. Moreover, mechanochromic luminescent color conversions are also observed to achieve the fine-tuning of the luminescent tints. This strategy can be smart to address full-color luminescence on the same molecular skeleton, showing better material compatibility as an alternative to the traditional multiple-luminophore engineering.
Creating Efficient Red Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials with Cyano-Substituted 11,12-Diphenyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine Acceptors

Abstract:Red luminescent materials are essential components for full color display and white lightening based on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, but the extension of emission color towards red or deep red region generally leads to decreased photoluminescence and electroluminescence efficiencies. Herein, we wish to report two new luminescent molecules (2CNDPBPPr-TPA and 4CNDPBPPr-TPA) consisting of cyano-substituted 11,12-diphenyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine acceptors and triphenylamine donors. As the increase of cyano substituents, the emission wavelength is greatly red-shifted and the reverse intersystem crossing process is promoted, resulting in strong red delayed fluorescence. Meanwhile, due to the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds, the molecular structures become rigidified and planarized, which brings about large horizontal dipole ratios. As a result, 2CNDPBPPr-TPA and 4CNDPBPPr-TPA can perform as emitters efficiently in OLEDs, furnishing excellent external quantum efficiencies of 28.8 % at 616 nm and 20.2 % at 648 nm, which are significantly improved in comparison with that of the control molecule without cyano substituents. The findings in this work demonstrate that the introduction of cyano substituents to the acceptors of delayed fluorescence molecules could be a facile and effective approach to explore high-efficiency red or deep red delayed fluorescence materials.
Efficient yellow and red thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials based on a quinoxaline-derived electron-acceptor
