Abstract:The compositional and thermal state of Earth's mantle provides critical constraints on the origin, evolution, and dynamics of Earth. However, the chemical composition and thermal structure of the lower mantle are still poorly understood. Particularly, the nature and origin of the two large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) in the lowermost mantle observed from seismological studies are still debated. In this study, we inverted for the 3D chemical composition and thermal state of the lower mantle based on seismic tomography and mineral elasticity data by employing a Markov chain Monte Carlo framework. The results show a silica-enriched lower mantle with a Mg/Si ratio less than ~1.16, lower than that of the pyrolitic upper mantle (Mg/Si = 1.3). The lateral temperature distributions can be described by a Gaussian distribution with a standard deviation (SD) of 120 to 140 K at 800 to 1,600 km and the SD increases to 250 K at 2,200 km depth. However, the lateral distribution in the lowermost mantle does not follow the Gaussian distribution. We found that the velocity heterogeneities in the upper lower mantle mainly result from thermal anomalies, while those in the lowermost mantle mainly result from compositional or phase variations. The LLSVPs have higher density at the base and lower density above the depth of ~2,700 km than the ambient mantle, respectively. The LLSVPs are found to have ~500 K higher temperature, higher Bridgmanite and iron content than the ambient mantle, supporting the hypothesis that the LLSVPs may originate from an ancient basal magma ocean formed in Earth's early history.

Abstract:Ultra-low velocity zones (ULVZs) at the base of Earth's lower mantle inferred from seismic inversions exhibit up to 50% lower shear velocity (Vs) and up to 25% lower compressional wave velocity (Vp) with respect to the average seismic velocities. Since the inversion procedure is not unique, the outcomes of the inversions remain inconclusive without a realistic cause supported by mineral physics data. In this review, we highlight the elastic properties of hypothesized candidates that were derived primarily from experimental in-situ measurements and some theoretical calculations. These candidates include partial melting of ordinary mantle material, iron-enriched solid phases (bridgmanite, post-perovskite, and ferropericlase), eutectic melting of iron‐carbon systems, and hydrogen-bearing ferric oxyhydroxide. We summarize and clarify the relative velocity changes and density changes as a function of the amount of each candidate mixing with the surrounding silicate-rich PREM mantle at 10% increments. The database provides constraints for seismic inversions in mapping seismic heterogeneities in the deep lower mantle. Although a comprehensive database of the elastic properties for each proposed candidate is unavailable, this review highlights or derives the material properties at the pressure and temperature conditions (~ 136 GPa and ~ 3500 K) near the core-mantle boundary (CMB), readily to be used in determining acoustic impedance for seismic inversions.

Iron Partitioning Between Ferropericlase and Bridgmanite in the Earth'S Lower Mantle

Abstract:Earth's lower mantle is generally believed to be seismically and chemically homogeneous because most of the key seismic parameters can be explained using a simplified mineralogical model at expected pressure-temperature conditions. However, recent high-resolution tomographic images have revealed seismic and chemical stratification in the middle-to-lower parts of the lower mantle. Thus far, the mechanism for the compositional stratification and seismic inhomogeneity, especially their relationship with the speciation of iron in the lower mantle, remains poorly understood. We have built a complete and integrated thermodynamic model of iron and aluminum chemistry for lower mantle conditions and from this model has emerged a stratified picture of the valence, spin, and composition profile in the lower mantle. Within this picture the lower mantle has an upper region with Fe3+-enriched bridgmanite with high-spin ferropericlase and metallic Fe and a lower region with low-spin, iron-enriched ferropericlase coexisting with iron-depleted bridgmanite and almost no metallic Fe. The transition between the regions occurs at a depth of around 1600 km and is driven by the spin transition in ferropericlase, which significantly changes the iron partitioning and speciation to one that favors Fe2+ in ferropericlase and suppresses Fe3+ and metallic iron formation. These changes lead to lowered bulk sound velocity by 3-4% around the middle-lower mantle and enhanced density by similar to 1% toward the lowermost mantle. The predicted chemically and seismically stratified lower mantle differs dramatically from the traditional homogeneous model.
Large-scale mantle heterogeneity as a legacy of plate tectonic supercycles

Abstract:The Earth's mantle is divided by the circum-Pacific subduction girdle into the African and Pacific domains, each featuring a large low-shear-wave-velocity province (LLSVP) in the lower mantle. However, how this hemispherical-scale mantle structure links to Earth's plate tectonic evolution remains unclear. Previous geochemical work has suggested the presence of a north–south hemispheric subdivision, with large-scale mantle heterogeneities in the Southern Hemisphere, termed the DUPAL (Dupré and Allegre) anomaly. Here we compile elemental and isotopic data of both shallow-mantle-derived oceanic igneous rocks from mid-ocean ridges and deeper-mantle plume-related samples (ocean islands and oceanic plateaus) and analyse these using supervised machine learning classification methods. Data from both shallow- and deeper-mantle-sourced samples illustrate a consistent chemical dichotomy. Our results indicate that heterogeneities in the present-day shallow and deep mantle are not exclusively controlled by the north–south hemispheric DUPAL anomaly. Instead, they are consistent with a chemical dichotomy between the African and Pacific mantle domains and their associated LLSVPs. These observations can best be explained by tectonic supercycles over the past one billion years involving two supercontinents and two superoceans.

Abstract:Determining the composition of Earth's lower mantle, which constitutes almost half of its total volume, has been a central goal in the Earth sciences for more than a century given the constraints it places on Earth's origin and evolution. However, whether the major element chemistry of the lower mantle, in the form of, e.g., Mg/Si ratio, is similar to or different from the upper mantle remains debated. Here we use a multidisciplinary approach to address the question of the composition of Earth's lower mantle and, in turn, that of bulk silicate Earth (crust and mantle) by considering the evidence provided by geochemistry, geophysics, mineral physics, and geodynamics. Geochemical and geodynamical evidence largely agrees, indicating a lower-mantle molar Mg/Si of ≥1.12 (≥1.15 for bulk silicate Earth), consistent with the rock record and accumulating evidence for whole-mantle stirring. However, mineral physics–informed profiles of seismic properties, based on a lower mantle made of bridgmanite and ferropericlase, point to Mg/Si ∼ 0.9–1.0 when compared with radial seismic reference models. This highlights the importance of considering the presence of additional minerals (e.g., calcium-perovskite and stishovite) and possibly suggests a lower mantle varying compositionally with depth. In closing, we discuss how we can improve our understanding of lower-mantle and bulk silicate Earth composition, including its impact on the light element budget of the core. ▪ The chemical composition of Earth's lower mantle is indispensable for understanding its origin and evolution. ▪ Earth's lower-mantle composition is reviewed from an integrated mineral physics, geophysical, geochemical, and geodynamical perspective. ▪ A lower-mantle molar Mg/Si of ≥1.12 is favored but not unique. ▪ New experiments investigating compositional effects of bridgmanite and ferropericlase elasticity are needed to further our insight.

Abstract:Significance Seismic tomography reveals Earth’s internal structure in great detail. Lateral variations of seismic wave velocities expose enigmatic mantle structures that, to be deciphered, require independent knowledge of acoustic velocities in minerals. Using density functional theory-based computational methods we show that a spin state change in iron in ferropericlase, the second major phase of the Earth’s lower mantle, produces seismic velocity anomalies that can be misinterpreted as compositional heterogeneity. This spin change reduces thermally induced longitudinal velocity variations between ∼1,500- and 2,000-km depths. This phenomenon is observed in P velocity tomography models and has been thought to be related to a chemical transition in the mantle. The spin change in iron in ferropericlase may offer an alternative interpretation of this phenomenon.
Mantle Convection in Subduction Zones: Insights from Seismic Anisotropy Tomography

Abstract:Lithospheric plates descend into the mantle and drive mantle upwelling in subduction zones, causing large earthquakes and vigorous magmatism along island arcs and continental margins. These processes induce different stress and strain regimes at different depths and generate varying seismic anisotropies. Hence, measurements of seismic anisotropy provide straightforward constraints on the subduction processes, in particular, mantle convection in subduction zones. High-resolution images of seismic anisotropy tomography obtained in the past decade have provided essential and direct information on the anisotropy in subduction zones. These new findings well constrain deformations in the overriding plates, subducting slabs, and mantle flows adjacent to the slabs. The anisotropy in the slabs, either trench-normal or trench-parallel, changes at different depths, reflecting either frozen-in fossil anisotropy or current slab deformations accompanying subduction. In the mantle wedge, dominant trench-normal anisotropy arises from extensive corner flow caused by the subduction, with notable 3D flow and trench-parallel anisotropy due to along-arc variations. In the subduction channel, trench-parallel and subduction-parallel anisotropies are revealed in strong and weak coupling areas, respectively. In the sub-slab mantle, there is still debate on entrained flow caused by subduction (inducing trench-normal anisotropy) and 3D flow caused by trench retreat (inducing trench-parallel anisotropy).
Review of seismic velocity anomalies in the lower mantle

Abstract:The lower mantle accounts for more than 50% of the total volume of the Earth, and influences the evolution of the Earth. Early studies showed that the lower mantle is relatively homogeneous, but since the 1970s, seismic tomography revealed the velocity structure of the deep Earth and found many velocity anomalies in the lower mantle. The accumulation of new array data and the progress of computer technology in the present century have enabled us to further constrain the seismic structures of these anomalous zones. Since these structures could be closely related to subduction plates and mantle plumes, it is of great significance to understand the fine structure of these wave velocity anomalies to study the reconstruction of ancient plates and the mantle dynamics. This study focuses on summarizing the methods and results in revealing the lower mantle anomalies using seismic data in the past 30 years, especially the distribution and characteristics of different types of velocity anomalous zones worldwide. African and Pacific LLSVP are the two most important LLSVPs in the lower mantle. Their lateral and vertical extents span approximately a thousand and more than a thousand kilometers, respectively. The present study found sharp velocity contrasts along the boundary of the LLSVP, which argues for chemical anomalies in the LLSVP. The ULVZ is located at the bottom of the lower mantle, with extremely low S-wave velocities that are 20%~40% smaller than the average. The lateral extent of the ULVZ is generally smaller than a thousand kilometers, but some ULVZ exceed that extent; the heights range from ten kilometers to dozens of kilometers. Partial melting, particularly related to chemical anomalies, is thought to be the most plausible explanation for ULVZ. D" discontinuities were also observed in many regions, especially where high-velocity subducted slabs were found. The slabs reduce the temperature near the core-mantle boundary, which yields stable pPv and D" discontinuities. In addition, the seismic anisotropy of the lower mantle is also a focus because it reflects the flow conditions of the mantle. The existing results show that several wave velocity anomaly structures (LLSVP, ULVZ, D", anisotropy) in the lower mantle may be closely related and connected to the subducting slabs in space, and the difference in mantle temperature and chemical composition may be an important factor that produces these anomalies. Finally, this study also summarizes the results of the velocity structure of the lower mantle in China and looks forward to the future research direction of the velocity anomaly and anisotropy of the lower mantle in China.

Abstract:We review the present state of our understanding of mantle convection with respect to geochemical and geophysical evidence and we suggest a model for mantle convection and its evolution over the Earth's history that can reconcile this evidence. Whole-mantle convection, even with material segregated within the D" region just above the core-mantle boundary, is incompatible with the budget of argon and helium and with the inventory of heat sources required by the thermal evolution of the Earth. We show that the deep-mantle composition in lithophilic incompatible elements is inconsistent with the storage of old plates of ordinary oceanic lithosphere, i.e. with the concept of a plate graveyard. Isotopic inventories indicate that the deep-mantle composition is not correctly accounted for by continental debris, primitive material or subducted slabs containing normal oceanic crust. Seismological observations have begun to hint at compositional heterogeneity in the bottom 1000 km or so of the mantle, but there is no compelling evidence in support of an interface between deep and shallow mantle at mid-depth. We suggest that in a system of thermochemical convection, lithospheric plates subduct to a depth that depends - in a complicated fashion - on their composition and thermal structure. The thermal structure of the sinking plates is primarily determined by the direction and rate of convergence, the age of the lithosphere at the trench, the sinking rate and the variation of these parameters over time (i.e. plate-tectonic history) and is not the same for all subduction systems. The sinking rate in the mantle is determined by a combination of thermal (negative) and compositional buoyancy and as regards the latter we consider in particular the effect of the loading of plates with basaltic plateaux produced by plume heads. Barren oceanic plates are relatively buoyant and may be recycled preferentially in the shallow mantle. Oceanic plateau-laden plates have a more pronounced negative buoyancy and can more easily founder to the very base of the mantle. Plateau segregation remains statistical and no sharp compositional interface is expected from the multiple fate of the plates. We show that the variable depth subduction of heavily laden plates can prevent full vertical mixing and preserve a vertical concentration gradient in the mantle. In addition, it can account for the preservation of scattered remnants of primitive material in the deep mantle and therefore for the Ar and (3)He observations in ocean-island basalts.
A Relatively Dry Mantle Transition Zone Revealed by Geomagnetic Diurnal Variations

Abstract:The distribution of water within the mantle transition zone (MTZ) has important implications for the material circulation and partial melting of the mantle. Although solubility of hydrogen is very high, leading to speculations that the MTZ plays a key role in the deep-Earth water cycle, the actual water content remains an open question. Electrical conductivity of mantle minerals is very sensitive to water content, so reliable estimates of this physical parameter in the MTZ would provide valuable constraints. Here, we use recently developed joint inversion of geomagnetic diurnal variation for realistic source structure and one-dimensional mantle conductivity profile. Synthetic tests show that the resulting profile is a reasonable proxy for the electrical conductivity distribution of continental mantle over depths where model resolution is best (200 to 600 kilometer), even in the presence of lateral heterogeneity. The inferred water concentration in the MTZ is 0.03 weight %, one to two orders of magnitude below the solubility of wadsleyite and ringwoodite.
Deciphering the deep Earth heterogeneities from the temperature fluctuation of mantle plumes

Abstract:Distinguishing deep lower mantle heterogeneities and resolving their physical and chemical properties are challenging due to the difficulty in achieving severe high-temperature and high-pressure conditions simultaneously in mineral experiments. Deep-seated mantle plumes bring these heterogeneities to the Earth's surface, therefore providing a unique insight into the Earth's deep interior. Here, we link the surface temperature fluctuation of mantle plume to the properties of deep-mantle heterogeneities via three-dimensional geodynamic modeling. Our results show that high-viscosity primordial mantle materials significantly increase the surface plume temperature due to their excessive viscous heating, whereas high-density oceanic crust slightly reduces it. Give some estimates for the maximum plume fluctuation temperature through time, the survival of scattered primordial blobs with a high viscosity contrast of ∼10-50 times in the deep-mantle reservoir is required. The temperature variations of the thermochemical mantle plume likely control the observed multiple volcanic episodes of large igneous provinces and periodic changes of volcanic flux along hotspot tracks.

Composition Versus Temperature Induced Velocity Heterogeneities in a Pyrolitic Lower Mantle

Abstract:Interpretation of lateral velocity heterogeneities is essential for our understanding of Earth's interior. Ferropericlase's (Fp) spin crossover (FSC) fundamentally changes their interpretation in the mid lower mantle. In a typical pyrolitic aggregate, FSC induces an unusual increase in bulk sound velocity (Vϕ) with increasing temperature at mid-lower-mantle depths. This reduces the sensitivity of longitudinal velocity (VP) to lateral temperature variations around 1700 km. Here we show that FSC also dramatically impacts the manifestation of two important types of compositional heterogeneities: i) variations in iron concentration in Fp, e.g., caused by changes in iron partitioning; ii) variation in molar fraction of Fp, as expected in slab subduction regions. FSC enhances the sensitivity of Vϕ and VP to these compositional variations by several-fold at similar depths. The opposite effects of lateral variations of temperature and composition on VP is critical for distinguishing the possible physical origin of heterogeneities in tomographic P-models. Temperature and composition variations also produce opposite types of correlation between Vϕ and shear velocity (VS) heterogeneities and between VS and density (ρ) heterogeneities. Only lateral temperature variations can produce anti-correlation between Vϕ and VS at mid lower mantle depths, while only these compositional variations can produce anti-correlation between VS and ρ in the spin crossover region and at greater depths. Together these effects suggest that heterogeneities in VP in the mid lower mantle common to multiple seismic models could originate in simultaneous lateral temperature and compositional variations in this region.

Abstract:Seismic imaging provides an opportunity to constrain mantle wedge processes associated with subduction, slab dehydration, arc volcanism, and backarc spreading. The mantle wedge is characterized by a low attenuation forearc, an inclined zone of low velocity and high attenuation underlying the volcanic front, and a broad region of low velocity and high attenuation beneath the backarc spreading center when present. Seismic velocities, bathymetry, and basalt chemistry suggest mantle temperature variations of ∼100°C between different backarc regions. Rock physics experiments and geodynamic modeling are essential for interpreting seismic observations. Seismic anisotropy indicates a complex pattern of mantle flow that can be modeled with along-strike flow in a low viscosity channel beneath the arc and backarc. Comparison of geodynamic models with seismic tomographic results using experimentally derived relations between velocity, attenuation, and temperature suggests the existence of small melt fractions in the mantle at depths of 30–150 km.

Abstract:Mineralogical modeling of the lower mantle critically depends on thermoelastic parameters, such as the expansion coefficient and the Gruneisen parameters. Significant experimental discrepancies exist for these properties of silicate perovskite. We calculate density and seismic velocities of mineral assemblages of (Mg, Fe)SiO3 perovskite and (Mg, Fe)O magnesiowustite at lower-mantle pressures and temperatures. The results are compared with seismological results (PREM; Preliminary Reference Earth Model) and a statistical test of goodness of fit is applied. We plot the chemical composition of the lower mantle as a function of the thermoelastic parameters of perovskite. The inferred chemical composition depends on the adopted properties. The present uncertainity in the data accommodates most proposed compositional models. A better understanding of lower-mantle mineralogy requires better thermoelastic data, particularly of silicate perovskite. A preferred compositional model is constrained by combining mineral physics with seismological observations of the Earth's deep interior. It appears that the upper mantle and lower mantle are chemically distinct. A chondritic lower mantle cannot be ruled out with present data.
Segregated Oceanic Crust Trapped at the Bottom Mantle Transition Zone Revealed from Ambient Noise Interferometry.

Abstract:The recycling of oceanic crust, with distinct isotopic and chemical signature from the pyrolite mantle, plays a critical role in the chemical evolution of the Earth with insights into mantle circulation. However, the role of the mantle transition zone during this recycling remains ambiguous. We here combine the unique resolution reflected body waves (P410P and P660P) retrieved from ambient noise interferometry with mineral physics modeling, to shed new light on transition zone physics. Our joint analysis reveals a generally sharp 660-km discontinuity and the existence of a localized accumulation of oceanic crust at the bottom mantle transition zone just ahead of the stagnant Pacific slab. The basalt accumulation is plausibly derived from the segregation of oceanic crust and depleted mantle of the adjacent stagnant slab. Our findings provide direct evidence of segregated oceanic crust trapped within the mantle transition zone and new insights into imperfect whole mantle circulation.
Persistence of Strong Silica-Enriched Domains in the Earth's Lower Mantle

Abstract:The composition of the lower mantle $-$ comprising 56% of Earth's volume $-$ remains poorly constrained. Among the major elements, Mg/Si ratios ranging from $\sim$0.9$-$1.1, such as in rocky solar-system building blocks (or chondrites), to $\sim$1.2$-$1.3, such as in upper-mantle rocks (or pyrolite), have been proposed. Geophysical evidence for subducted lithosphere deep in the mantle has been interpreted in terms of efficient mixing and thus homogeneous Mg/Si across most of the mantle. However, previous models did not consider the effects of variable Mg/Si on the viscosity and mixing efficiency of lower-mantle rocks. Here, we use geodynamic models to show that large-scale heterogeneity with viscosity variations of $\sim$20$\times$, such as due to the dominance of intrinsically strong (Mg,Fe)SiO$_3-$bridgmanite in low-Mg/Si domains, are sufficient to prevent efficient mantle mixing, even on large scales. Models predict that intrinsically strong domains stabilize degree-two mantle-convection patterns, and coherently persist at depths of $\sim$1,000$-$2,200 km up to the present-day, separated by relatively narrow up-/downwelling conduits of pyrolitic material. The stable manifestation of such "bridgmanite-enriched ancient mantle structures" (BEAMS) may reconcile the geographical fixity of deep-rooted mantle-upwelling centers, and fundamental geophysical changes near 1,000 km depth (e.g. in terms of seismic-tomography patterns, radial viscosity increase, lateral deflections of rising plumes and sinking slabs). Moreover, these ancient structures may provide a reservoir to host primordial geochemical signatures.

Abstract:The interior of the Earth remains our last terra incognita, inaccessible to direct observations. Our understanding of the deformation of the mantle, which shapes our planet through convection and plate tectonics, is based on analysis of: (1) rare mantle rocks carried to the Earth's surface by volcanic or tectonic processes, (2) the consequences of this deformation on the planet's surface, and (3) geophysical data. These observables combined with laboratory experiments and numerical modeling imply that olivine deforms via the motion of defects within its crystalline structure and along grain boundaries. Ductile deformation by these crystal-scale processes results in anisotropic propagation of seismic waves, which allows us to probe upper- mantle deformation at scales of tens to hundreds of kilometers.

Abstract:Past efforts to interrogate the mantle's contribution to Earth's topography suffer from inadequate in-situ measurements of true bathymetry and the involvement of an empirical plate model whose presumed lithospheric density profile interferes with the interpretation of other mantle forces. Here, we introduce a machine learning algorithm that estimates the oceanic residual topography based solely on surface and crustal attributes, providing a more objective proxy for the topographic contribution from the mantle. Ablation studies show that seafloor age is the most important factor, while other properties help further improve the fit to bathymetry. The resulting residual topography has notably smaller amplitudes than previous estimates, indicating that more surface features can be explained by crustal properties than previously thought. This exercise, designed to allow detection of long-wavelength signals, uncovers a more prominent degree-one topographic component than the degree-two pattern, both with much smaller amplitudes than previously thought. We suggest that this result reflects a hemispheric contrast in mantle dynamics, especially the two large low shear-wave velocity provinces (LLSVPs). This inference is further strengthened by quantifying the respective topographic contributions from lithospheric isostasy and dynamic topography. We conclude that mantle convection beneath the Atlantic is more vigorous than that beneath the Pacific, likely due to their different thermal-chemical states.

Abstract:Large-scale heterogeneities in the mantle are investigated through trace elements measured in oceanic basalts from different locations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The study relies upon the physico-chemical properties of the elements and their classification according to their partition coefficients. High partition coefficient elements (Co, Ni, Cr) have concentrations in peridotite that are not sensitive to solid-liquid equilibrium (partial melting); the mantle should therefore be homogeneous with respect to these elements. The ratios of elements that have equal or very similar low partition coefficients (Y/Tb, Zr/Hf and Nb/Ta) are constant in all samples studied, despite their large concentration range. These ratios are equal to chondritic ratios and favour a chondritic nature for the primordial mantle. The La/Ta ratio shows two values, either 9 or 18, which are closely related to topography (9 for topographic highs). When the difference between partition coefficients of two hygromagmaphilic elements increases, the local variations observed for their ratio can be interpreted either as local heterogeneities of mantle sources or as the effect of magmatic processes (e.g. partial melting).
