Abstract:The compositional and thermal state of Earth's mantle provides critical constraints on the origin, evolution, and dynamics of Earth. However, the chemical composition and thermal structure of the lower mantle are still poorly understood. Particularly, the nature and origin of the two large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) in the lowermost mantle observed from seismological studies are still debated. In this study, we inverted for the 3D chemical composition and thermal state of the lower mantle based on seismic tomography and mineral elasticity data by employing a Markov chain Monte Carlo framework. The results show a silica-enriched lower mantle with a Mg/Si ratio less than ~1.16, lower than that of the pyrolitic upper mantle (Mg/Si = 1.3). The lateral temperature distributions can be described by a Gaussian distribution with a standard deviation (SD) of 120 to 140 K at 800 to 1,600 km and the SD increases to 250 K at 2,200 km depth. However, the lateral distribution in the lowermost mantle does not follow the Gaussian distribution. We found that the velocity heterogeneities in the upper lower mantle mainly result from thermal anomalies, while those in the lowermost mantle mainly result from compositional or phase variations. The LLSVPs have higher density at the base and lower density above the depth of ~2,700 km than the ambient mantle, respectively. The LLSVPs are found to have ~500 K higher temperature, higher Bridgmanite and iron content than the ambient mantle, supporting the hypothesis that the LLSVPs may originate from an ancient basal magma ocean formed in Earth's early history.

Abstract:Seismic imaging provides an opportunity to constrain mantle wedge processes associated with subduction, slab dehydration, arc volcanism, and backarc spreading. The mantle wedge is characterized by a low attenuation forearc, an inclined zone of low velocity and high attenuation underlying the volcanic front, and a broad region of low velocity and high attenuation beneath the backarc spreading center when present. Seismic velocities, bathymetry, and basalt chemistry suggest mantle temperature variations of ∼100°C between different backarc regions. Rock physics experiments and geodynamic modeling are essential for interpreting seismic observations. Seismic anisotropy indicates a complex pattern of mantle flow that can be modeled with along-strike flow in a low viscosity channel beneath the arc and backarc. Comparison of geodynamic models with seismic tomographic results using experimentally derived relations between velocity, attenuation, and temperature suggests the existence of small melt fractions in the mantle at depths of 30–150 km.

Abstract:Ultra-low velocity zones (ULVZs) at the base of Earth's lower mantle inferred from seismic inversions exhibit up to 50% lower shear velocity (Vs) and up to 25% lower compressional wave velocity (Vp) with respect to the average seismic velocities. Since the inversion procedure is not unique, the outcomes of the inversions remain inconclusive without a realistic cause supported by mineral physics data. In this review, we highlight the elastic properties of hypothesized candidates that were derived primarily from experimental in-situ measurements and some theoretical calculations. These candidates include partial melting of ordinary mantle material, iron-enriched solid phases (bridgmanite, post-perovskite, and ferropericlase), eutectic melting of iron‐carbon systems, and hydrogen-bearing ferric oxyhydroxide. We summarize and clarify the relative velocity changes and density changes as a function of the amount of each candidate mixing with the surrounding silicate-rich PREM mantle at 10% increments. The database provides constraints for seismic inversions in mapping seismic heterogeneities in the deep lower mantle. Although a comprehensive database of the elastic properties for each proposed candidate is unavailable, this review highlights or derives the material properties at the pressure and temperature conditions (~ 136 GPa and ~ 3500 K) near the core-mantle boundary (CMB), readily to be used in determining acoustic impedance for seismic inversions.

Abstract:The interior of the Earth remains our last terra incognita, inaccessible to direct observations. Our understanding of the deformation of the mantle, which shapes our planet through convection and plate tectonics, is based on analysis of: (1) rare mantle rocks carried to the Earth's surface by volcanic or tectonic processes, (2) the consequences of this deformation on the planet's surface, and (3) geophysical data. These observables combined with laboratory experiments and numerical modeling imply that olivine deforms via the motion of defects within its crystalline structure and along grain boundaries. Ductile deformation by these crystal-scale processes results in anisotropic propagation of seismic waves, which allows us to probe upper- mantle deformation at scales of tens to hundreds of kilometers.

Abstract:The latest global mantle seismic tomographic data have revealed tectonics beneath plates:the lithospheric slab may be subducted to the core-mantle boundary and the superplume may rise from the core-mantle boundary to the upper crust to form a hot spot.The mantle“single-layer convection”model challenges the mantle“double-layer convection”model.Through the introduction of the aforesaid new hy-pothesis and new model,this paper emphasizes that to study the lithospheric plate is necessary to gain knowledge of the tectonics beneath the plate and that to explore the driving force of the lithospheric plate“lithosphere dynamics”should be sublimated into“mantle dynamics”.
Full-waveform inversion reveals diverse origins of lower mantle positive wave speed anomalies

Abstract:Determining Earth's structure is paramount to unravel its interior dynamics. Seismic tomography reveals positive wave speed anomalies throughout the mantle that spatially correlate with the expected locations of subducted slabs. This correlation has been widely applied in plate reconstructions and geodynamic modelling. However, global travel-time tomography typically incorporates only a limited number of easily identifiable body wave phases and is therefore strongly dependent on the source-receiver geometry. Here, we show how global full-waveform inversion is less sensitive to source-receiver geometry and reveals numerous previously undetected positive wave speed anomalies in the lower mantle. Many of these previously undetected anomalies are situated below major oceans and continental interiors, with no geologic record of subduction, such as beneath the western Pacific Ocean. Moreover, we find no statistically significant correlation positive anomalies as imaged using full-waveform inversion and past subduction. These findings suggest more diverse origins for these anomalies in Earth's lower mantle, unlocking full-waveform inversion as an indispensable tool for mantle exploration.

Abstract:The seismogenesis of rocks is mainly affected by their mineral composition and in situ conditions (temperature and state of stress). Diverse laboratory experiments have explored the frictional behaviour of the rocks and rock-forming minerals most common in the crust and uppermost mantle. However, it is debated how to "upscale" these results to the lithosphere. In particular, most earthquakes in the crust nucleate down to the crustal seismogenic depth (CSD), which is a proxy for the maximum depth of crustal earthquake ruptures in seismic hazard assessments. In this study we propose a workflow to upscale and validate those laboratory experiments to natural geological conditions relevant for crustal and upper-mantle rocks. We used the southern Caribbean and northwestern South America as a case study to explore the three-dimensional spatial variation of the CSD (mapped as D90, the 90 % percentile of hypocentral depths) and the temperatures at which crustal earthquakes likely occur. A 3D steady-state thermal field was computed for the region with a finite-element scheme using the software GOLEM, considering the uppermost 75 km of a previously published 3D data-integrative lithospheric configuration, lithology-constrained thermal parameters, and appropriate upper and lower boundary conditions. The model was validated using additional, independent measurements of downhole temperatures and heat flow. We found that the majority of crustal earthquakes nucleate at temperatures less than 350 ∘ C, in agreement with frictional experiments of typical crustal rocks. A few outliers with larger hypocentral temperatures evidence nucleation conditions consistent with the seismogenic window of olivine-rich rocks, and can be due to either uncertainties in the Moho depths and/or in the earthquake hypocentres or the presence of ultramafic rocks within different crustal blocks and allochthonous terranes accreted to this complex margin. Moreover, the spatial distribution of crustal seismicity in the region correlates with the geothermal gradient, with no crustal earthquakes occurring in domains with low thermal gradient. Finally, we find that the largest earthquake recorded in the region ( M w =7.1 , Murindó sequence, in 1992) nucleated close to the CSD, highlighting the importance of considering this lower-stability transition for seismogenesis when characterizing the depth of seismogenic sources in hazard assessments. The approach presented in this study goes beyond a statistical approach in that the local heterogeneity of physical properties is considered in our simulations and additionally validated by the observed depth distribution of earthquakes. The coherence of the calculated hypocentral temperatures with those expected from laboratory measurements provides additional support to our modelling workflow. This approach can be applied to other tectonic settings worldwide, and it could be further refined as new, high-quality hypocentral locations and heat flow and temperature observations become available.

Abstract:Mineralogical modeling of the lower mantle critically depends on thermoelastic parameters, such as the expansion coefficient and the Gruneisen parameters. Significant experimental discrepancies exist for these properties of silicate perovskite. We calculate density and seismic velocities of mineral assemblages of (Mg, Fe)SiO3 perovskite and (Mg, Fe)O magnesiowustite at lower-mantle pressures and temperatures. The results are compared with seismological results (PREM; Preliminary Reference Earth Model) and a statistical test of goodness of fit is applied. We plot the chemical composition of the lower mantle as a function of the thermoelastic parameters of perovskite. The inferred chemical composition depends on the adopted properties. The present uncertainity in the data accommodates most proposed compositional models. A better understanding of lower-mantle mineralogy requires better thermoelastic data, particularly of silicate perovskite. A preferred compositional model is constrained by combining mineral physics with seismological observations of the Earth's deep interior. It appears that the upper mantle and lower mantle are chemically distinct. A chondritic lower mantle cannot be ruled out with present data.

Abstract:Abstract This paper reviews current knowledge about the Earth’s core and the overlying deep mantle in terms of structure, chemical and mineralogical compositions, physical properties, and dynamics, using information from seismology, geophysics, and geochemistry. High-pressure experimental techniques that can help to interpret and understand observations of these properties and compositions in the deep interior are summarized. The paper also examines the consequences of core flows on global observations such as variations in Earth’s rotation and orientation or variations in the Earth’s magnetic field. Processes currently active at the core-mantle boundary and the various coupling mechanisms between the core and the mantle are discussed, together with some evidence from magnetic field observations.

Abstract:Abstract The dynamics of Earth's D′′ layer at the base of the mantle plays an essential role in Earth's thermal and chemical evolution. Mantle convection in D′′ is thought to result in seismic anisotropy; therefore, observations of anisotropy may be used to infer lowermost mantle flow. However, the connections between mantle flow and seismic anisotropy in D′′ remain ambiguous. Here, we calculate the present‐day mantle flow field in D′′ using 3D global geodynamic models. We then compute strain, a measure of deformation, outside the two large‐low velocity provinces (LLVPs) and compare the distribution of strain with previous observations of anisotropy. We find that, on a global scale, D′′ materials are advected toward the LLVPs. The strains of D′′ materials generally increase with time along their paths toward the LLVPs and toward deeper depths, but regions far from LLVPs may develop relative high strain as well. Materials in D′′ outside the LLVPs mostly undergo lateral stretching, with the stretching direction often aligning with mantle flow direction, especially in fast flow regions. In most models, the depth‐averaged strain in D′′ is >0.5 outside the LLVPs, consistent with widespread observations of seismic anisotropy. Flow directions inferred from anisotropy observations often (but not always) align with predictions from geodynamic modeling calculations.

Abstract:Elastic properties of MgSiO3-perovskite are of fundamental importance for our understanding of the thermal and chemical state of the lower mantle. However, the elastic moduli and especially their derivatives with respect to temperature and pressure at lower mantle conditions are still uncertain. In this study, we have carried out extensive first principles molecular dynamics simulations to determine the equation of state, elastic constants, moduli and velocities of MgSiO3-perovskite over a wide temperature and pressure regime (from static conditions to 3500 K and from 36 GPa to 140 GPa). Systematic errors arising from approximations to the exchange–correlation functional in density functional theory have been essentially eliminated with a generalized re-scaling method. Molecular dynamics trajectories were carefully converged with respect to duration and system size and analyzed to distinguish the effects of anharmonicity. Based on the new elastic properties derived in this study, the pyrolite mineralogical model is found to predict wave velocities in close agreement with those of seismic observations in most of lower mantle regime.
Review of seismic velocity anomalies in the lower mantle

Abstract:The lower mantle accounts for more than 50% of the total volume of the Earth, and influences the evolution of the Earth. Early studies showed that the lower mantle is relatively homogeneous, but since the 1970s, seismic tomography revealed the velocity structure of the deep Earth and found many velocity anomalies in the lower mantle. The accumulation of new array data and the progress of computer technology in the present century have enabled us to further constrain the seismic structures of these anomalous zones. Since these structures could be closely related to subduction plates and mantle plumes, it is of great significance to understand the fine structure of these wave velocity anomalies to study the reconstruction of ancient plates and the mantle dynamics. This study focuses on summarizing the methods and results in revealing the lower mantle anomalies using seismic data in the past 30 years, especially the distribution and characteristics of different types of velocity anomalous zones worldwide. African and Pacific LLSVP are the two most important LLSVPs in the lower mantle. Their lateral and vertical extents span approximately a thousand and more than a thousand kilometers, respectively. The present study found sharp velocity contrasts along the boundary of the LLSVP, which argues for chemical anomalies in the LLSVP. The ULVZ is located at the bottom of the lower mantle, with extremely low S-wave velocities that are 20%~40% smaller than the average. The lateral extent of the ULVZ is generally smaller than a thousand kilometers, but some ULVZ exceed that extent; the heights range from ten kilometers to dozens of kilometers. Partial melting, particularly related to chemical anomalies, is thought to be the most plausible explanation for ULVZ. D" discontinuities were also observed in many regions, especially where high-velocity subducted slabs were found. The slabs reduce the temperature near the core-mantle boundary, which yields stable pPv and D" discontinuities. In addition, the seismic anisotropy of the lower mantle is also a focus because it reflects the flow conditions of the mantle. The existing results show that several wave velocity anomaly structures (LLSVP, ULVZ, D", anisotropy) in the lower mantle may be closely related and connected to the subducting slabs in space, and the difference in mantle temperature and chemical composition may be an important factor that produces these anomalies. Finally, this study also summarizes the results of the velocity structure of the lower mantle in China and looks forward to the future research direction of the velocity anomaly and anisotropy of the lower mantle in China.
Detections of ultralow velocity zones in high-velocity lowermost mantle linked to subducted slabs

Abstract:Ultralow velocity zones revealed by seismological observations at the core–mantle boundary lend clues to the physico-chemical characteristics and dynamic evolution of the Earth's deep interior. Ultralow velocity zones have been primarily detected within and at the edges of the large low-velocity provinces. Ultralow velocity zones in high-velocity lowermost mantle have also been reported, but global assessment has been limited by data coverage. Here we use geophysical observations of the seismic phase SKKKP and its B-caustic diffractions (SKKKP waves beyond the B-caustic distance) for 60 large and deep-focus events recorded in North America, Europe and China to detect ultralow velocity zones at the core–mantle boundary. We analyse and simulate the extended SKKKP B-caustic diffractions with different velocity anomalies in the mantle and outer core. In addition to ultralow velocity zones around the two large low-velocity provinces beneath the mid-Pacific and Africa, our results support ultralow velocity zones in previously under-explored high-velocity lowermost mantle regions, including Central America, Alaska, Greenland and West and Central Asia. We suggest our evidence for ultralow velocity zones in high-velocity lowermost mantle is consistent with the presence of partially molten subducted oceanic crust at the deep lower mantle.

Abstract:Determining the composition of Earth's lower mantle, which constitutes almost half of its total volume, has been a central goal in the Earth sciences for more than a century given the constraints it places on Earth's origin and evolution. However, whether the major element chemistry of the lower mantle, in the form of, e.g., Mg/Si ratio, is similar to or different from the upper mantle remains debated. Here we use a multidisciplinary approach to address the question of the composition of Earth's lower mantle and, in turn, that of bulk silicate Earth (crust and mantle) by considering the evidence provided by geochemistry, geophysics, mineral physics, and geodynamics. Geochemical and geodynamical evidence largely agrees, indicating a lower-mantle molar Mg/Si of ≥1.12 (≥1.15 for bulk silicate Earth), consistent with the rock record and accumulating evidence for whole-mantle stirring. However, mineral physics–informed profiles of seismic properties, based on a lower mantle made of bridgmanite and ferropericlase, point to Mg/Si ∼ 0.9–1.0 when compared with radial seismic reference models. This highlights the importance of considering the presence of additional minerals (e.g., calcium-perovskite and stishovite) and possibly suggests a lower mantle varying compositionally with depth. In closing, we discuss how we can improve our understanding of lower-mantle and bulk silicate Earth composition, including its impact on the light element budget of the core. ▪ The chemical composition of Earth's lower mantle is indispensable for understanding its origin and evolution. ▪ Earth's lower-mantle composition is reviewed from an integrated mineral physics, geophysical, geochemical, and geodynamical perspective. ▪ A lower-mantle molar Mg/Si of ≥1.12 is favored but not unique. ▪ New experiments investigating compositional effects of bridgmanite and ferropericlase elasticity are needed to further our insight.

Shear Attenuation and Anelastic Mechanisms in the Central Pacific Upper Mantle

Abstract:We determine the mantle attenuation (1/Q) structure beneath 70 Myr seafloor in the central Pacific. We use long-period (33-100 sec) Rayleigh waves recorded by the NoMelt array of broadband ocean-bottom seismometers. After the removal of tilt and compliance noise, we are able to measure Rayleigh wave phase and amplitude for 125 earthquakes. The compliance correction for ocean wave pressure on the seafloor is particularly important for improving signal-to-noise at periods longer than 55 sec. Attenuation and azimuthally anisotropic phase velocity in the study area are determined by approximating the wavefield as the interference of two plane waves. We find that the amplitude decay of Rayleigh waves across the NoMelt array can be adequately explained using a two-layer model: in the shallow layer, in the deeper layer, and a transition depth at 70 km, although the sharpness of the transition is not well resolved by the Rayleigh wave data. Notably, observed in the NoMelt lithosphere is significantly higher than values in this area from global attenuation models. When compared with lithospheric measured at higher frequency (~3 Hz), the frequency dependence of attenuation is very slight, revising previous interpretations. The effect of anelasticity on shear velocity (VS) is estimated from the ratio of observed velocity to the predicted anharmonic value. We use laboratory-based parameters to predict attenuation and velocity-dispersion spectra that result from the superposition of a weakly frequency dependent high-temperature background and an absorption peak. We test a large range of frequencies for the position of the absorption peak (fe) and determine, at each depth, which values of fe predict and VS that can fit the NoMelt and VS values simultaneously. We show that between depths of 60 and 80 km the seismic models require an increase in fe by at least 3-4 orders of magnitude. Under the assumption that the absorption peak is caused by elastically accommodated grain-boundary sliding, this increase in fe reflects a decrease in grain-boundary viscosity of 3-4 orders of magnitude. A likely explanation is an increase in the water content of the mantle, with the base of the dehydrated lid located at ~70-km depth.

Abstract:Mid-ocean ridge and oceanic transforms are among the most prominent features on the seafloor surface and are crucial for understanding seafloor spreading and plate tectonic dynamics, but the deep structure of the oceanic lithosphere remains poorly understood. The large number of microearthquakes occurring along ridges and transforms provide valuable information for gaining an indepth view of the underlying detailed seismic structures, contributing to understanding geodynamic processes within the oceanic lithosphere. Previous studies have indicated that the maximum depth of microseismicity is controlled by the 600-℃ isotherm. However, this perspective is being challenged due to increasing observations of deep earthquakes that far exceed this suggested isotherm along mid-ocean ridges and oceanic transform faults. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain these deep events, and we suggest that local geodynamic processes（e.g., magma supply, mylonite shear zone, longlived faults, hydrothermal vents, etc.） likely play a more important role than previously thought.
Depth Dependent Deformation and Anisotropy of Pyrolite in the Earth's Lower Mantle

Abstract:Seismic anisotropy is a powerful tool to map deformation processes in the deep Earth. Below 660 km, however, observations are scarce and conflicting. In addition, the underlying crystal scale mechanisms, leading to microstructures and crystal orientations, remain poorly constrained. Here, we use multigrain X‐ray diffraction in the laser‐heated diamond anvil cell to investigate the orientations of hundreds of grains in pyrolite, a model composition of the Earth's mantle, at in situ pressure and temperature. Bridgmanite in pyrolite exhibits three regimes of microstructures, due to transformation and deformation at low and high pressure. These microstructures result in predictions of 1.5%–2% shear wave splitting between 660 and 2,000 km with reversals in fast S‐wave polarization direction at about 1,300 km depth. Anisotropy can develop in pyrolite at lower mantle conditions, but pressure has a significant impact on the plastic behavior of bridgmanite, and hence seismic observations, which may explain conflicting anisotropy observations.

Toward Tectonic-Type and Global 1D Seismic Models of the Upper Mantle Constrained by Broadband Surface Waves

Abstract:ABSTRACT The unprecedentedly dense current sampling of the upper mantle with seismic data offers an opportunity for determining representative seismic velocity models for the Earth’s main tectonic environments. Here, we use over 1.17 million Rayleigh- and 300,000 Love-wave, fundamental-mode, phase-velocity curves measured with multimode waveform inversion of data available since the 1990s, and compute phase-velocity maps in a 17–310 s period range. We then compute phase-velocity curves averaged over the globe and eight tectonic environments, and invert them for 1D seismic velocity profiles of the upper mantle. The averaged curves are smooth and fit by VS models with very small misfits, under 0.1%, at most periods. For phase-velocity curves extending up to 310 s, Rayleigh waves resolve VSV structure down to the shallow lower mantle. Love-wave sampling is shallower, and VSH and, thus, radial anisotropy profiles are resolved down to 375–400 km depth. The uncertainty of the VS models is dominated by the trade-offs of VS at neighboring depths. Using the model-space-projection approach, we quantify the uncertainty of VS in layers of different thickness and at different depths, and show how it decreases with the increasing thickness of the layers. Example 1D VS models that fit the data display the expected increase of the lithospheric seismic velocity with the age of the oceanic lithosphere and with the average age of the continental tectonic type. Radial anisotropy in the global and most tectonic-type models show a flip of the sign from positive (VSH>VSV) to negative at 200–300 km depth. Negative anisotropy is also observed in the shallow mantle lithosphere beneath oceans down to 45–55 km depth. We also compute a global model with the minimal structural complexity, which fits the data worse than the best-fitting one but does not include a sublithospheric low-velocity zone, providing a simple reference for seismic studies.

The Seismic Structure of the Antarctic Upper Mantle

Abstract:The deployment of seismic stations and the development of ambient noise tomography and new analysis methods provide an opportunity for higher resolution imaging of Antarctica. Here we review recent seismic structure models and describe their implications for the dynamics and history of the Antarctic upper mantle. Results show that most of East Antarctica is underlain by continental lithosphere to depths of ~ 200 km. The thickest lithosphere is found in a band 500-1000 km west of the Transantarctic Mountains, representing the continuation of cratonic lithosphere with Australian affinity beneath the ice. Dronning Maud Land and the Lambert Graben show much thinner lithosphere, consistent with Phanerozoic lithospheric disruption. The Transantarctic Mountains mark a sharp boundary between cratonic lithosphere and the warmer upper mantle of West Antarctica. In the Southern Transantarctic Mountains, cratonic lithosphere has been replaced by warm asthenosphere, giving rise to Cenozoic volcanism and an elevated mountainous region. The Marie Byrd Land volcanic dome is underlain by slow seismic velocities extending through the transition zone, consistent with a mantle plume. Slow velocity anomalies beneath the coast from the Amundsen Sea Embayment to the Antarctic Peninsula likely result from upwelling of warm asthenosphere during subduction of the Antarctic-Phoenix spreading center.
