Abstract:Since the Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake occurred in 2008 in the Longmenshan at the eastern margin of Tibet, this region has attracted much attention. In order to investigate the deep structure of the region, an analysis of P receiver functions was carried out, using data from an array of 80 broadband seismic stations operated in 2012 and 2013, and straddling the Longmenshan fault zone around the epicenter of the Wenchuan earthquake. Positive Ps conversions from 5 to 10km depth indicate the base of the Mesozoic sediments in the Sichuan basin and the base of the Songpan-Ganzi flysch deposits in Tibet. Later positive Ps conversions represent the Moho, which occurs at 40-50km depth below the Sichuan basin and deepens to the NW to 55-70km depth under Tibet. An important finding of this study is that whereas in the NE, the Moho deepening from SE to NW is smooth, in the middle and SW of the region the Moho deepening is abrupt with, in some places, a possible overlap. Negative Ps conversions at stations in Tibet represent the top of low shear velocity zones in the middle and lower crusts below Tibet. Beneath the Sichuan basin, a negative phase about 1s earlier than the Moho Ps conversion is to a large extent, almost certainly due to multiples from discontinuities in the upper crust. Finally, positive Ps conversions can be observed from the 410 and 660-km discontinuities at the top and bottom of the mantle transition zone, respectively.
The Long-Wavelength Mantle Structure and Dynamics and Implications for Large-Scale Tectonics and Volcanism in the Phanerozoic

Abstract:The Earth's lower mantle structure, as revealed by seismic tomography studies, is best characterized by two large low seismic velocity provinces (i.e., LLSVP) beneath Africa and Pacific and their surrounding, circum-Pacific seismically fast anomalies. This mantle structure, sometimes called degree-2 structure, has been the most robust feature of all the seismic tomography models for the last 30 years. The dominantly degree-2 mantle structure explains the long-wavelength geoid anomalies including the geoid highs over Africa and Pacific. The LLSVPs are suggested to be the source regions for hotspot volcanism and large igneous province (LIP) events that are compositionally distinct from that for mid-ocean ridge basalts, thus holding the key to understanding mantle geochemistry. The degree-2 structure and LLSVPs have also been used as a reference frame to reconstruct paleogeography and true polar wander (TPW) history of the Earth for the Phanerozoic (i.e., for the last 500 Ma). This paper presents a comprehensive review of studies on the degree-2 mantle structure. While seismic tomography inversion and models are discussed, the main focus of the paper is on the dynamics of long-wavelength mantle convection, plate tectonics and large-scale volcanism. Important topics in the paper include: 1) the long-wavelength seismic structure for the present-day mantle, its possible relation to the long-wavelength geoid anomalies, volcanism and magmatism, and plate motion history, 2) the time evolution of the long-wavelength mantle structure in the Phanerozoic and its relations to Pangea assembly and breakup and history of volcanism/LIP events, and 3) the physics that controls the dynamics of long-wavelength mantle convection. The paper also provides a critical assessment on the validity of the hypothesis of spatially stationary Africa and Pacific LLSVPs since the early Paleozoic and its implications.
From Rodinia to Pangea: an Extroversion Process Driven First by Plume Push Followed by Downwelling Pull, Absorption and Merging

Abstract:Numerous works also suggested that mantle plumes or mantle upwellings associated with LLSVPs in a degree-2 mantle state play a major role in driving the break-up of a supercontinent. However, subduction and mantle downwelling may play an increasing role in the leadup to the assembly of the next supercontinent. Anderson (1994) noticed that continents tend to gather at mantle downwelling zones, which was later developed into the hypothesis of orthoversion assembly of supercontinents by Mitchell (2012). Zhong et al. (2007) conceptualised the assembly of supercontinents through the merger or absorption of mantle downwellings, leading to the assembly of supercontinents over a superdownwelling in a degree-1 mantle. Here we present a revised global paleogeographic reconstruction featuring an extroversion assembly of Pangea (i.e. through the closure of the Mirovoi superocean) over a pre-existing yet dynamic mantle downwelling zone (Li et al., 2019). In particular, we show that the Paleozoic world was dominated by two major subduction (dowelling) cells, one associated with the newly assembled Gondwana, and the other associated with the assembly of Laurasia. The two cells gradually merged together by the Carboniferous time, forming the supercontinent Pangea over a mantle superdownwelling (Zhang et al., 2010). Crustal and Upper Mantle Structure Beneath SE China from Joint Analysis of Receiver Functions and Rayleigh-wave Dispersion

Abstract:SUMMARY Various geodynamic models, such as a mantle plume, lithospheric delamination and the subduction of palaeo-Pacific Plate, have been proposed to account for the Mesozoic magmatic activity and related mineralization in SE China. However, previous seismic velocity models are insufficient in resolution to constrain the accompanying crust–mantle interactions, which limits our understanding of the deep geodynamic processes responsible for the Mesozoic magmatism in SE China. In this study, we construct a new 3-D shear wave velocity model of the crust and upper mantle beneath SE China using joint inversion of receiver functions and Rayleigh-wave dispersion. We also determine the crustal thicknesses and Vp/Vs ratios by H–k stacking of receiver functions. Compared to the western Cathaysia Block, the coastal volcanic-intrusive belt (CVIB) southeast of the Zhenghe-Dapu Fault shows relatively high-velocity anomalies in the lower crust and high Vp/Vs ratios, indicating significant underplating of mafic material beneath the CVIB. Furthermore, it is noticeable that the asthenospheric low-velocity anomalies are stronger beneath the CVIB than beneath the interior of SE China, suggesting a southeastward increase in the intensity of asthenospheric upwelling and partial melting, which was likely responsible for the strong volcanism and the inferred mafic underplating beneath the CVIB. Our observations provide new evidence and more details for the northwestward subduction and subsequent rollback of the palaeo-Pacific Plate causing the Late Mesozoic magmatism in SE China.

Abstract:Understanding the Mesozoic–Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the North China Craton (NCC) and the NE Tibetan Plateau (TP) requires detailed knowledge of the lithospheric structure. Using dense regional networks and temporary deployments as well as updated reference models, we obtain the crust and upper mantle structure to 120km depth. Our tomographic results show several major features, which have particular implications for the Weihe–Shanxi rift system (WSRS), deformation of the NE TP, and lithospheric evolution of the NCC. Beneath the WSRS, the crust gradually thickens from south to north, the lithospheric mantle gradually becomes slower, and the mid-lower crustal velocities are lower in the Weihe Rift, where rifting of the WSRS initiated. We suggest that along-strike variations of the lithospheric structures of the WSRS have played an important role in its multistage evolution. A low-velocity zone (LVZ) in the mid-crust beneath the Qilian Orogen is characterized by relatively higher velocities compared to LVZs in other parts of the TP. Thus, coherent lithospheric deformation may occur due to the high viscosity of the LVZ during early plateau growth, causing strong anisotropy to develop. The western NCC (including the Ordos Block and part of the Alashan Block) shows a high-velocity cratonic root extending to the base of our model. In contrast, the lithosphere of the eastern NCC appears to have been completely modified during the Mesozoic through Cenozoic and presents a thin lithosphere of relatively low velocities underlain by hot asthenosphere. We observed significant upper-mantle heterogeneities in the NCC, which may reflect its diachronous lithospheric modification.

Abstract:The complex tectonic background of East Asia makes it an ideal region for investigating the evolution of the continental lithosphere, for which high-resolution lithospheric structural models are essential. In this study, we measured Rayleigh-wave phase-velocity dispersion curves at periods of 10–120 s and group velocity dispersion curves at periods of 10–140 s using event records from more than 1,000 seismic stations in and around China. By jointly inverting new and previously published dispersion data from ambient noise and earthquakes, we developed a high-resolution shear-wave velocity model down to a depth of ∼300 km beneath East Asia. Our model revealed heterogeneous lithospheric structures beneath East Asia, and allowed us to investigate the velocity structure of the entire lithosphere. We also derived crustal and lithospheric thickness models from the three-dimensional (3D) shear-wave model, revealing strong spatial heterogeneity and a general thinning trend of lithospheric thickness from west to east across the study region. Overall, our models reveal important lithospheric features beneath East Asia and provide a valuable baseline dataset for understanding continental-scale dynamics and evolution.
High-resolution Lithospheric Structure Beneath Mainland China from Ambient Noise and Earthquake Surface-Wave Tomography

Abstract:We present a new high-resolution shear-velocity model of the lithosphere (down to about 160 km) beneath China using Rayleigh-wave tomography. We combined ambient noise and earthquake data recorded at 1316 seismic stations, the largest number used for the region to date. More than 700,000 dispersion curves were measured to generate group and phase velocity maps at periods of 10–140 s. The resolution of our model is significantly improved over previous models with about 1–2° in eastern China and 2–3° in western China. We also derived models of the study region for crustal thickness and averaged S velocities for upper and mid-lower crust and uppermost mantle. These models reveal important lithospheric features beneath China and provide a fundamental data set for understanding continental dynamics and evolution. Different geological units show distinct features in the Moho depth, lithospheric thickness, and shear velocity. In particular, the North China Craton (NCC) lithosphere shows strong east–west structural variations with thin and low-velocity lithosphere in eastern NCC and thick and high-velocity lithosphere beneath western NCC and the lithosphere of the Ordos Block seems to have undergone strong erosion. The results support the progressive destruction of the NCC lithosphere from east to west at least partly caused by the thermal–chemical erosion of the cratonic lithosphere from the asthenosphere. Another pronounced feature of our model is the strong lateral variations of the mantle lithosphere beneath the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The Indian lithosphere beneath the TP shows variable northward advancement with nearly flat subduction in western and eastern TP and steep subduction in central TP with evidence for the tearing of Indian lithosphere beneath central TP, which may be important for the riftings at the surface in Himalayas and southern TP. The low-velocity zone in northern TP shows strong correlation with the region of the mid-Miocene to Quaternary potassic magmatism, suggesting that delamination of lithosphere may have played an important role in the rise of the TP.
A Model for the Evolution of the Earth's Mantle Structure Since the Early Paleozoic

Abstract:[1] Seismic tomography studies indicate that the Earth's mantle structure is characterized by African and Pacific seismically slow velocity anomalies (i.e., superplumes) and circum-Pacific seismically fast anomalies (i.e., a globally spherical harmonic degree 2 structure). However, the cause for and time evolution of the African and Pacific superplumes and the degree 2 mantle structure remain poorly understood with two competing proposals. First, the African and Pacific superplumes have remained largely unchanged for at least the last 300 Myr and possibly much longer. Second, the African superplume is formed sometime after the formation of Pangea (i.e., at 330 Ma) and the mantle in the African hemisphere is predominated by cold downwelling structures before and during the assembly of Pangea, while the Pacific superplume has been stable for the Pangea supercontinent cycle (i.e., globally a degree 1 structure before the Pangea formation). Here, we construct a proxy model of plate motions for the African hemisphere for the last 450 Myr since the Early Paleozoic using the paleogeographic reconstruction of continents constrained by paleomagnetic and geological observations. Coupled with assumed oceanic plate motions for the Pacific hemisphere, this proxy model for the plate motion history is used as time-dependent surface boundary condition in three-dimensional spherical models of thermochemical mantle convection to study the evolution of mantle structure, particularly the African mantle structure, since the Early Paleozoic. Our model calculations reproduce well the present-day mantle structure including the African and Pacific superplumes and generally support the second proposal with a dynamic cause for the superplume structure. Our results suggest that while the mantle in the African hemisphere before the assembly of Pangea is predominated by the cold downwelling structure resulting from plate convergence between Gondwana and Laurussia, it is unlikely that the bulk of the African superplume structure can be formed before ∼230 Ma (i.e., ∼100 Myr after the assembly of Pangea). Particularly, the last 120 Myr plate motion plays an important role in generating the African superplume. Our models have implications for understanding the global-scale magmatism, tectonics, mantle dynamics, and thermal evolution history for the Earth since the Early Paleozoic.
Mantle Transition Zone Structure Beneath Southeastern China and its Implications for Stagnant Slab and Water Transportation in the Mantle

Abstract:We determined depth variation of the 410- and 660-km discontinuities beneath southeastern China by common-converted-point stacking of P -wave receiver functions of 121 permanent Chinese seismic stations. We then combined the results with seismic velocity variation to estimate temperature and water content variations in the mantle transition zone of the region. Previous tomographic studies have shown a stagnant slab in the mantle transition zone in eastern Asia that is connected to subduction of the western Pacific. Temperature variations obtained clearly outline the shape of the stagnant slab, with its western edge at 113.5 ^∘ E and the southern edge at 28.5 ^∘ N. The correlation between the location of the stagnant slab and surface tectonics suggests that the Cenozoic extension in eastern China is closely associated with the subduction of the western Pacific and its eastward migration. The water content of the stagnant slab is lower than in surrounding slabs, suggesting that the water has already been released from the subducting slab into the upper mantle.

Abstract:The Earth's mantle is divided by the circum-Pacific subduction girdle into the African and Pacific domains, each featuring a large low-shear-wave-velocity province (LLSVP) in the lower mantle. However, how this hemispherical-scale mantle structure links to Earth's plate tectonic evolution remains unclear. Previous geochemical work has suggested the presence of a north–south hemispheric subdivision, with large-scale mantle heterogeneities in the Southern Hemisphere, termed the DUPAL (Dupré and Allegre) anomaly. Here we compile elemental and isotopic data of both shallow-mantle-derived oceanic igneous rocks from mid-ocean ridges and deeper-mantle plume-related samples (ocean islands and oceanic plateaus) and analyse these using supervised machine learning classification methods. Data from both shallow- and deeper-mantle-sourced samples illustrate a consistent chemical dichotomy. Our results indicate that heterogeneities in the present-day shallow and deep mantle are not exclusively controlled by the north–south hemispheric DUPAL anomaly. Instead, they are consistent with a chemical dichotomy between the African and Pacific mantle domains and their associated LLSVPs. These observations can best be explained by tectonic supercycles over the past one billion years involving two supercontinents and two superoceans.

Abstract:We show in this paper that mobile-lid mantle convection in a three-dimensional spherical shell with observationally constrained mantle viscosity structure, and realistic convective vigor and internal heating rate is characterized by either a spherical harmonic degree-1 planform with a major upwelling in one hemisphere and a major downwelling in the other hemisphere when continents are absent, or a degree-2 planform with two antipodal major upwellings when a supercontinent is present. We propose that due to modulation of continents, these two modes of mantle convection alternate within the Earth's mantle, causing the cyclic processes of assembly and break-up of supercontinents including Rodinia and Pangea in the last 1 Ga. Our model suggests that the largely degree-2 structure for the present-day mantle with the Africa and Pacific antipodal superplumes, is a natural consequence of this dynamic process of very long-wavelength mantle convection interacting with supercontinent Pangea. Our model explains the basic features of true polar wander (TPW) events for Rodinia and Pangea including their equatorial locations and large variability of TPW inferred from paleomagnetic studies. Our model also suggests that TPW is expected to be more variable and large during supercontinent assembly, but small after a supercontinent acquires its equatorial location and during its subsequent dispersal. Mantle Flow and Dynamics Beneath Central‐East China: New Insights from P‐Wave Anisotropic Tomography

Abstract:Massive lithospheric thinning occurred in eastern China and large-scale magmatism in South China occurred in the Mesozoic. Some geodynamic models have been proposed to explain their mechanisms, but are not consistent with each other. We apply anisotropic tomography to 32,728 P-wave travel time data of 479 teleseismic events recorded at 225 stations to study the 3-D anisotropic Vp structure of the upper mantle beneath central-east China. P-wave radial anisotropy is investigated for the first time in the study region. Our results show that an obvious low-velocity zone exists in the asthenosphere under the eastern part of our study region, which represents upwelling thermal flow from the Cathaysia block to the North China block (NCB) according to the results of azimuthal and radial anisotropies. A distinct high-velocity zone with weak radial anisotropy exists under the middle Yangtze block, which is explained as the stable cratonic root. Two other weak high-velocity zones appear near or within the mantle transition zone under the middle-lower Yangtze River and the eastern NCB, which might be detached lithosphere or the stagnant Pacific slab. Combining with previous geological and geochemical results, we consider that both the NCB and the South China block have undergone a common geodynamic process in the Mesozoic due to their similar age trending of igneous rocks, which could be explained by a flat-slab subduction model and a ridge subduction model. These two models are associated with the paleo-Pacific plate subduction that might have played a key role in the evolution of eastern China.
Deep structure background and Poisson's ration beneath the intersection zone of Nanling and Wuyi

Abstract:Knowing the structures of the crust and upper mantle is fundamental for understanding of the geodynamics of the orogenic belt. To provide observational seismic evidences on deep structures of crust and mantle beneath the intersection zone of Nanling and Wuyi, we conduct the crustal imaging obtained from P-wave receiver functions. In this study, P-wave receiver functions are calculated using teleseismic waveforms recorded by 66 portable broadband stations and 24 permanent stations. We also obtain the crustal thickness, Poisson's ratio and image of the Moho interface by using the H-kappa stacking method and Common Conversion Point (CCP) stacking method, which indicate the variationsin crustal thickness and Poisson's ratio between the Yangtze block and the Cathaysia block. The results show that : (1) The average thickness of the crust is 31. 2 km with the average Poisson's ratio of 0. 23. The study area (Both the Yangtze block and the Cathaysia block are) is characterized by thin crust and low Poisson' s ratio. Further, the thickness of crust gradually decreases from northwest to southeast, which is consistent with the regional extension of the crust. (2) Along the Shaoguan-Ganzhou-Jian-Nanchang profile, a strip of thin (about 28 km) crustal thickness is observed, indicating a southwest-northeast spreading, with a slight increase of the Poisson's ratio. The results suggest that the upwelling of mantle heat flow from the South China Sea leads to the formation of a weak zone in the crust and plays an important role in regulating the crustal stress field in the South China. (3) The Poisson's ratio in the Jiangnan orogenic belt is relatively low, with average value of two areas less than 0. 21. There is a weak negative correlation between the crustal thickness and the Poisson's ratio in the Cathaysia block, indicating a decrease of the proportion of the ferromagnesian lower-crust thickness in the entire crust with the increase of crustal thickness. The Poisson's ratio of the Cathaysia block is smaller than that of the Yangtze block, which may be related to the late formation of the crust and the multiple tectonic activities that have occurred since the Phanerozoic.

Abstract:The South China Plate is located on the southeastern margin of the Eurasia Plate, which is composed of the Yangtze Block and the Cathaysia Block. In the Messozoic, massive magmatism and lithospheric thinning have jointly caused the extremely complex structure of the crust-upper mantle, and have formed such metallogenic belts as the middle-lower Yangtze river belt (MLYB), the Qinhang belt, the Wuyi belt and the Nanling belt, and so on. We have studied the velocity model and anisotropic structure beneath South China to discuss the deep geodynamics in the past few years by teleseismic tomography, SKS splitting, ambient noise tomography and teleseismic two-plane-wave tomography, respectively.

Early studies showed that the lower mantle is relatively homogeneous, but since the 1970s, seismic tomography revealed the velocity structure of the deep Earth and found many velocity anomalies in the lower mantle. The accumulation of new array data and the progress of computer technology in the present century have enabled us to further constrain the seismic structures of these anomalous zones. Since these structures could be closely related to subduction plates and mantle plumes, it is of great significance to understand the fine structure of these wave velocity anomalies to study the reconstruction of ancient plates and the mantle dynamics. This study focuses on summarizing the methods and results in revealing the lower mantle anomalies using seismic data in the past 30 years, especially the distribution and characteristics of different types of velocity anomalous zones worldwide. African and Pacific LLSVP are the two most important LLSVPs in the lower mantle. Their lateral and vertical extents span approximately a thousand and more than a thousand kilometers, respectively. The present study found sharp velocity contrasts along the boundary of the LLSVP, which argues for chemical anomalies in the LLSVP. The ULVZ is located at the bottom of the lower mantle, with extremely low S-wave velocities that are 20%~40% smaller than the average. The lateral extent of the ULVZ is generally smaller than a thousand kilometers, but some ULVZ exceed that extent; the heights range from ten kilometers to dozens of kilometers. Partial melting, particularly related to chemical anomalies, is thought to be the most plausible explanation for ULVZ. D" discontinuities were also observed in many regions, especially where high-velocity subducted slabs were found. The slabs reduce the temperature near the core-mantle boundary, which yields stable pPv and D" discontinuities. In addition, the seismic anisotropy of the lower mantle is also a focus because it reflects the flow conditions of the mantle. The existing results show that several wave velocity anomaly structures (LLSVP, ULVZ, D", anisotropy) in the lower mantle may be closely related and connected to the subducting slabs in space, and the difference in mantle temperature and chemical composition may be an important factor that produces these anomalies. Finally, this study also summarizes the results of the velocity structure of the lower mantle in China and looks forward to the future research direction of the velocity anomaly and anisotropy of the lower mantle in China.
Seismic Constraint from Vp/Vs Ratios on the Structure and Composition Across the Continent‐Ocean Transition Zone, South China Sea

Abstract:AbstractAt non‐volcanic passive continental margins, seismic techniques often failed to uniquely define the nature of crustal domains. Here, we overcome this problem by studying the structure and composition of the continent‐ocean transition (COT) in the Southwest Sub‐basin of the South China Sea, using P and S wave seismic tomography and Vp/Vs ratios, providing unique constraints on lithology. Throughout the image domain, we can rule out large areas of exhumed mantle as Vp/Vs ratios are always <1.9 in the shallow basement layer. Instead, the COT is characterized by extended and fragmented continental crust, and possibly mafic aggregation at the bottom of the crust. In concert with observations from multichannel seismic reflection data, seismic velocities and Vp/Vs ratios suggest that the oldest oceanic crust was formed by starved magmatism, causing rugged basement, thin crust, nearly absent lower crust, and moderately serpentinized mantle below. Our results reveal that rifting occurred without un‐roofing continental mantle.

Abstract:We applied teleseismic tomography to 5671 relative travel-time residuals from 257 teleseismic events recorded by 69 seismic stations to determine the 3D P-wave velocity structure of the upper mantle under Southeast (SE) China. Our results show prominent low P-wave velocity (low-Vp) anomalies under SE China which may reflect the remnant magma chambers and channels of the Late Mesozoic igneous rocks, which may be reheated by the upwelling mantle flow from the lower mantle driven by the deep subduction in East Asia during the Cenozoic. High-Vp anomalies are revealed in the upper mantle to the east of Taiwan, which represent the subducted Eurasian plate. Our result also suggests the break-off of the subducted Eurasian plate caused by its interaction with the Philippine Sea plate under Central and North Taiwan. The slab break-off may have created a mantle window through which the asthenospheric flow arises, causing the high heat flow and rapid uplift in the Taiwan orogen.

Abstract:The Pacific large low-shear-velocity province (LLSVP), as revealed by cluster analysis of global tomographic models, hosts multiple internal anomalies, including a notable gap (~20° wide) between the central and eastern Pacific. The cause of the structural gap remains unconstrained. Directly above this structural gap, we identify an anomalously thick mantle transition zone east of the East Pacific Rise, the fastest-spreading ocean ridge in the world, using a dense set of SS precursors. The area of the thickened transition zone exhibits faster-than-average velocities according to recent tomographic images, suggesting perturbed postolivine phase boundaries shifting in response to lowered temperatures. We attribute this observation to episodes of Mesozoic-aged (250 to 120 million years ago) intraoceanic subduction beneath the present-day Nazca Plate. The eastern portion of the Pacific LLSVP was separated by downwelling because of this ancient oceanic slab. Our discovery provides a unique perspective on linking deep Earth structures with surface subduction.

Abstract:The compositional and thermal state of Earth's mantle provides critical constraints on the origin, evolution, and dynamics of Earth. However, the chemical composition and thermal structure of the lower mantle are still poorly understood. Particularly, the nature and origin of the two large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) in the lowermost mantle observed from seismological studies are still debated. In this study, we inverted for the 3D chemical composition and thermal state of the lower mantle based on seismic tomography and mineral elasticity data by employing a Markov chain Monte Carlo framework. The results show a silica-enriched lower mantle with a Mg/Si ratio less than ~1.16, lower than that of the pyrolitic upper mantle (Mg/Si = 1.3). The lateral temperature distributions can be described by a Gaussian distribution with a standard deviation (SD) of 120 to 140 K at 800 to 1,600 km and the SD increases to 250 K at 2,200 km depth. However, the lateral distribution in the lowermost mantle does not follow the Gaussian distribution. We found that the velocity heterogeneities in the upper lower mantle mainly result from thermal anomalies, while those in the lowermost mantle mainly result from compositional or phase variations. The LLSVPs have higher density at the base and lower density above the depth of ~2,700 km than the ambient mantle, respectively. The LLSVPs are found to have ~500 K higher temperature, higher Bridgmanite and iron content than the ambient mantle, supporting the hypothesis that the LLSVPs may originate from an ancient basal magma ocean formed in Earth's early history.
P and S Wave Tomography of East-Central China: Insight into Past and Present Mantle Dynamics

Abstract:East-central China has experienced multi-stage evolution among different tectonic units; thus the present geological structures are superimposed in a long history. But it is still unclear how different tectonic processes interact with each other, especially how the subsequent activity affects the previous structures. In this study, we determined new high-resolution P and S wave tomography of the upper mantle beneath the east-central China. We imaged the stagnant Pacific slab in the mantle transition zone and the hot low-velocity upper mantle in eastern China while cold high-velocity bodies beneath the Archean cratons in central China. More importantly, we newly revealed two important features. Firstly, a high-velocity zone is found in the uppermost mantle (50-150 km) beneath the Southeast China; its location is comparable to the distribution of the Cretaceous igneous rocks. Thus, we propose that the high-velocity anomalies reflect the remnant mafic rocks in the upper mantle after the volcanic eruption. Secondly, a high-velocity body is revealed in the deep upper mantle (300-500 km) beneath the southwestern Yangtze craton, possibly implying the delaminated cratonic lithosphere in the Early Mesozoic.
