Abstract:This letter presents a novel wearable thermoelectric generator (TEG) device for powering electronics by harvesting human body heat. The structural design of the TEG device consists of 12 thermoelectric modules, which are connected by copper strips electrically in series and thermally in parallel. A flexible printed circuit board with special hollows' design is utilized as the bottom electrodes and substrate to enhance the flexibility of the device. The fabrication procedure to make this TEG device is then described. The hot- and cold-sides of TEG are soldered by a thin layer of Sn96.5Ag3Cu0.5 and Sn-42 Bi-58, respectively. Therefore, the developed TEGdevice features both high flexibility and excellent performance for heat harvesting. Experimental characterization results demonstrated that the TEG device can achieve 23 mu W power and 4.75 mu W/cm(2) power density at a temperature difference of 35 K. After wearing on human wrist, this TEG device can generate an open-circuit voltage of 10.5 mV, and the ability of using this TEG for powering a light emitting diode has been demonstrated. Results indicated that the developed wearable TEG device could be used for powering of wearable electronics and/or sensors.

Abstract:PEDOT has caught much attention because of its intrinsic electrical conductivity and flexibility. However, PEDOT has a low Seebeck coefficient that prevents its practical applications in the smart wearable field and this problem is one challenge faced by scientists today. Hence, in this study, polypropylene nonwovens (PP) that received hydrophilic treatment in advance were used as matrices (PP-PDA). The matrices underwent the low temperature interfacial polymerization technology and coating treating, and were 4 thus deposited with PEDOT and high thermoelectric performance inorganic nanoparticles (CuI), thereby forming high performance thermoelectric fabric (PP-PDA-PEDOT/CuI) having a core-shell structure. PEDOT and nanoparticles (CuI) have energy filtering effect that improves the Seebeck coefficient thermoelectric fabrics, Seebeck coefficient from 13.53 μV/K elevated to 83.02 μV/K. Next, thermoelectric fabrics were assembled into thermoelectric devices with five pairs that can collect both the body heat and the solar energy. When users put on the thermoelectric devices, a temperature difference of 10 °C generates voltage of 2.264 mV. Specifically, with a temperature difference being 30 °C, thermoelectric devices were able to generate output voltage of 5.5 mV. which proves that the wearable thermoelectric devices become an effective strategy for the applications of the smart textiles field.

Abstract:Fiber-based thermoelectric materials have received increased attention as they are light weight and can be sewn and woven for portable and wearable thermoelectric generators. In this work, Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composite fibers were fabricated by a continuous wet spinning process using concentrated sulfuric acid as a coagulation bath, which could effectively remove the excess PSS and result in improved electric conductivity. With a SWCNT content of 50 wt%, the PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT composite fibers show a high electric conductivity of 2982 S cm−1 and a Seebeck coefficient of 27.1 μV K−1, leading to a promising power factor of 219 μW m−1 K−2. By further treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution, the PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT fibers exhibit an enhanced Seebeck coefficient of 36.4 μV K−1 and a power factor of 280 μW m−1 K−2, which is higher than most PEDOT:PSS-based thermoelectric fibers. The mechanism of the enhancement of thermoelectric properties for the composite fibers was discussed. A flexible thermoelectric generator with five pairs of PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT fibers and copper wires were assembled and the electrical power generation capability were evaluated, demonstrating its potential application in wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and fabrication of a wearable thermoelectric generator (TEG) with high power density for harvesting the human body heat energy. The proposed TEG was fabricated using a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) as the substrate. The P-type and N-type thermoelectric blocks were made of Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric material and welded on the FPCB, and they were surrounded by the soft PDMS material. The prototyped TEG consisted of 18 thermocouples, which was connected by FPCB and silver paste over an area of 42 x 30 mm(2). The fabricated TEG could generate a voltage of 48 mV for a temperature difference of 12 K. Then, the TEG was mounted onto the human wrist skin to harvest the human body heat energy. Results showed that the measured output power was 130.6 nW at ambient temperature of 25 degrees C. Thus, the developed TEG has the potential for human body heat energy harvesting and utilized for the development of wearable self-powered mobile devices.

Abstract:Wearable thermoelectric devices show promises to generate electricity in a ubiquitous, unintermittent and noiseless way for on-body applications. Three-dimensional thermoelectric textiles (TETs) outperform other types in smart textiles owing to their out-of-plane thermoelectric generation and good structural conformability with fabrics. Yet, there has been lack of efficient strategies in scalable manufacture of TETs for sustainably powering electronics. Here, we fabricate organic spacer fabric shaped TETs by knitting carbon nanotube yarn based segmented thermoelectric yarn in large scale. Combing finite element analysis with experimental evaluation, we elucidate that the fabric structure significantly influences the power generation. The optimally designed TET with good wearability and stability shows high output power density of 51.5 mW/m2 and high specific power of 173.3 uW/(g.K) at delta T= 47.5 K. The promising on-body applications of the TET in directly and continuously powering electronics for healthcare and environmental monitoring is fully demonstrated. This work will broaden the research vision and provide new routines for developing high-performance and large-scale TETs toward practical applications.

Abstract:We report a significant enhancement in the thermoelectric power of PEDOT by fabricating a novel ternary composite film by incorporating Bi 2 Te 3 and rGO. A series of five samples of PEDOT:PSS/Bi 2 Te 3 /rGO ternary composite films were synthesized using a spin coating method and having different weight% (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 wt%) of rGO in PEDOT:PSS/0.4 wt% Bi 2 Te 3 mixture along with pure PEDOT:PSS sample. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and power factor increased in composite films compared to pure PEDOT:PSS films. Incorporating rGO enhanced charge carrier mobility because of its highly conductive network, whereas Bi 2 Te 3 provided higher Seebeck coefficients owing to its inherent thermoelectric properties. PEDOT:PSS offered mechanical flexibility and a conductive matrix, facilitating effective phonon scattering and inherently lower thermal conductivity. The sample (PEDOT:PSS/0.4 wt% Bi 2 Te 3 /0.1 rGO wt%) demonstrated the highest electrical conductivity of 1522.4 S cm −1 , a Seebeck coefficient of (+) 24.7 μV K −1 , and a power factor of 93.16 μW m −1 K −2 at room temperature. These values represent a twelve-fold increase compared to pristine PEDOT films. A flexible, printable thermoelectric generator (TEG) was also demonstrated on polyimide substrate using inks prepared from p-type PEDOT:PSS/Bi 2 Te 3 /rGO and n-type PVDF/Ni NWs. The paper TEG achieved a maximum power output of 242.1 nW, with an output voltage of 9.84 mV and an output current of 49.21 μA at a temperature difference (Δ T ) of 35 K. XRD, Raman spectroscopy SEM, and XPS techniques were used to understand the underlying mechanism. This novel PEDOT:PSS/Bi 2 Te 3 /rGO ternary composite film significantly outperforms previously reported organic thermoelectric materials. The results indicate that the combined effect of PEDOT:PSS, Bi 2 Te 3 , and rGO greatly enhances thermoelectric performance, offering a promising and efficient route for the application of PEDOT in advanced thermoelectric conversion processes.

Abstract:Self-powered wearable thermoelectric (TE) devices significantly reduce the inconvenience caused to users, especially in daily use of portable devices and monitoring personal health. The textile-based TE devices (TETs) exhibit the excellent flexibility, deformability, and light weight, which fulfill demands of long-term wearing for the human body. In comparison to traditional TE devices with their longstanding research history, TETs are still in an initial stage of growth. In recent years, TETs to provide electricity for low-power wearable electronics have attracted increasing attention. This review summarizes the recent progress of TETs from the points of selecting TE materials, scalable fabrication methods of TE fibers/yarns and TETs, structure design of TETs and reported high-performance TETs. The key points to develop TETs with outstanding TE properties and mechanical performance and better than available optimization strategies are discussed. Furthermore, remaining challenges and perspectives of TETs are also proposed to suggest practical applications for heat harvesting from human body.
All-Solution-Processed Polythiophene/Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites Integrated on Biocompatible Silk Fibroin Substrates for Wearable Thermoelectric Generators

Abstract:This paper presents proof-of-concept all-solution-processed wearable thermoelectric generators made of single-walled carbon nanotube/poly(3-hexylthiophene) (SWCNT/P3HT) nanocomposites integrated with biocompatible silk fibroin substrates and Ag nanowires (NWs)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) layers. Since well-dispersed SWCNT/P3HT nanocomposites are obtained through π–π interactions between conjugated backbones, continuous and repeated spraying/vacuum processes enabled the silk fibroin-substrated SWCNT/P3HT films to exhibit an optimized power factor of 204 ± 4.6 μW m–1 K–2 at 50 °C, an electrical conductivity of 1170 ± 52.8 S cm–1, and a Seebeck coefficient of 41.8 ± 0.9 μV K–1, which are ∼1.5 times those of the glass-substrated device. This may be attributed to the significantly enhanced conductivity caused by the increased junction density of the SWCNT bundles within the compact and dense SWCNT/P3HT nanocomposites. When a spray-patterned Ag NWs/PEDOT/PSS electrode was assembled, the constructed in-plane SWCNT/P3HT thermoelectric generators with 14 legs produced an open-circuit voltage (V oc) of 22.6 mV and a peak power of 25.1 nW at a temperature difference (ΔT) of 28.8 °C while maintaining good flexibility during bending tests. This demonstrates that these silk fibroin-substrated thermoelectric generator prototypes, which are worn on the forearm, can be used to harvest human body heat, thereby generating a V oc of ∼6.1 mV with a ΔT as low as 8.3 °C between the skin and surrounding air. This study offers a promising strategy for exploiting simple solution-processed thermoelectric nanocomposites assembled using biomass-based substrates and patterned electrodes for low-grade waste heat-harvesting wearable devices.

Abstract:Conducting polymers, particularly poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), have been intensively studied for thermoelectric (TE) applications, owing to their unique advantages including nontoxicity, low cost, good mechanical flexibility and low thermal conductivity. The TE properties of the conducting polymers show a strong dependence on their polymer chain conformations and chain stacking structures. In this work, one-dimensional PEDOT:PSS fibers were developed to improve the chain packing order and increase the proportions of quinoid PEDOT by the spatial confinement effect arising from the specific fiber configuration. The PEDOT:PSS fibers were produced through a continuous wet-spinning process followed by a one-step treatment with sulfuric acid. The optimized PEDOT:PSS fibers achieved a power factor of 147.8 μW m−1 K−2 with an electrical conductivity of 4029.5 S cm−1 and a Seebeck coefficient of 19.2 μV K−1 at room temperature. The power factor was 15 times that of a two-dimensional PEDOT:PSS film processed at the same condition. Besides, the PEDOT:PSS fibers also exhibited a high tensile strength of 389.5 MPa and a large breaking strain of 30.5%. Based on the PEDOT:PSS fibers, a prototype fibrous TE generator (TEG) was assembled. The fibrous TEG delivered an output power density of ~0.273 μW cm−2 using the human body heat. This work paves the way to developing high-performance organic TE materials by approaches of polymer chain modulation.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) textiles which can harvest thermal energy from the human body, are highly desirable and vital to the charging of wearable electronics owing to their stable and long-term power output. The typical carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns or bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) based inorganic TE materials used hitherto limit the development of TE textiles, because of their high cost and rareness. In this work, scalable and high-TE performance carbon nanotube composite yarns (CNTYs) are developed using p- and n-type tuneable multi-wall CNTs and single-wall CNTs as TE materials and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) as the binder. The mechanical properties of the CNTYs are tuned and improved considerably by adding a small amount of WPU. Furthermore, TE yarns with p- and n-type segmented structures are prepared by treating CNTYs with poly(3, 4-ethylene dioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate solution and n-type dopant polyetherimide, respectively. Based on the prepared p- and n-type segmented TE yarns, a TE textile with 75 p–n pairs that achieve outstanding TE output is fabricated. The TE textile can generate a high power density of 95.74 μW m−2 with a voltage density of 3.76 V m−2 at a temperature difference of 32 K. It provides an output voltage of ~ 37 mV outdoors (~ 12 ℃) when worn on the arm and demonstrates potential application to electronic devices after amplification. The fabrication method used in this study is not only a low-cost, scalable for preparing high-performance TE yarns but also realizes the body heat harvesting and temperature sensing of yarn-based TE textiles.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Thermoelectric conversion technology provides a new method for directly collecting and converting the heat released by the human body to electrical energy, which has attracted extensive attention in the field of smart wearable electronics. However, current thermoelectric materials for wearable thermoelectric devices often face problems such as air impermeability, large volume, poor integration, and limited stretchability. Herein, an advanced fabrication approach combining coagulation-bath electrospinning and self-assembly strategies is proposed to efficiently and continuously fabricate CNT/PEDOT:PSS thermoelectric nanofiber yarns with high stretchability (∼350%) and seamability. During the spinning process, the nonsolvent induced phase separation and self-assembly effect result in a large amount of CNT/PEDOT:PSS loaded on each individual nanofiber. Since the thermoelectric material is loaded inside the yarn rather than simply coated on the surface, it exhibits excellent mechanical stability. In addition, based on the thermoelectric effect and seamability of the yarns, they can be integrated into gloves and masks for cold/heat source identification and human respiration monitoring in self-powered mode. Moreover, the self-powered strain sensor composed of the yarn shows corresponding thermovoltage changes for different strains, which can be used to optimize basketball players’ shooting percentage. These unique features make the thermoelectric nanofiber yarn show broad prospects in smart wearable fields such as wearable generators, breathing monitoring, and exercise optimization.

Abstract:Textile-based wearable thermoelectric (TE) devices which could realize electricity harvesting and self-powered sensing using body heat attract great attention as they combine flexibility and skin conformality, yet do not require an external power supply. However, the challenge remains in developing durable TE fabrics which could generate sufficient power. Herein, a novel and scalable fabrication strategy that realizes simultaneous carbon nanotube (CNT) electrospray on poly (lactic acid) (PLA) fabric electrospinning is proposed to fabricate flexible TE composite fabrics. The optimal TE fabrics demonstrate a high Seebeck coefficient of 62.9 ± 6.2 μV K −1 and a maximum power density of 37.3 nW cm −2 is achieved at a temperature difference of 17 K with flexible textile TE generator assembled with CNT/PLA TE composite fabrics on neat PLA textile. The device further demonstrated superior capability in electricity harvesting from the human body and self-powered temperature and/or breath sensing. Moreover, the device exhibited excellent durability after 500 times bending and 100 times water dip-wash, which is ascribed to the uniform CNT electrospray among the PLA nanofibers and strong adhesion between the CNT and PLA. This work provides a novel fabrication strategy for green, durable and wearable TE composites and textiles in emerging power generation and smart sensing applications.

Abstract:Wearable devices based on organic thermoelectric (TE) fibers or textiles are attracting widespread attention because of their impressive structural features and high heat-to-electricity conversion capability. However, the production of low-cost, high-TE, and high-mechanical-performance TE fibers is still a challenge. Herein, a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) spinning solution were synthesized by low-temperature in situ polymerization and freeze–thaw (FT) treatment. Also PEDOT:PSS TE fibers were prepared by wet spinning. PEDOT:PSS fibers with excellent properties were obviously improved by regulating the polymerization reaction temperature and number of FT cycles. The optimized PEDOT:PSS fibers obtained at a pretty low in situ polymerization temperature (−18 °C) and FT2 cycles excited a considerably high Seebeck coefficient of 40.8 μV·K–1, a high electrical conductivity of 980 S·cm–1, and a tensile breaking strength of 57.42 cN. The method is cost-effective and could be realized in mass production, demonstrating its potential application in wearable electronic devices.

Novel Wearable Pyrothermoelectric Hybrid Generator for Solar Energy Harvesting

Abstract:Recently, wearable energy harvesting systems have been attracting great attention. As thermal energy is abundant in nature, developing wearable energy harvesters based on thermal energy conversion processes has been of particular interest. By integration of a high-efficient solar absorber, a pyroelectric film, and thermoelectric yarns, herein, we design a novel wearable solar-energy-driven pyrothermoelectric hybrid generator (PTEG). In contrast to those wearable pyroelectric generators and thermoelectric generators reported in previous works, our PTEG can enable effective energy harvesting from both dynamic temperature fluctuations and static temperature gradients. Under an illumination intensity of 1500 W/m2 (1.5 sun), the PTEG successfully charges two commercial capacitors to a sum voltage of 3.7 V in only 800 s, and the total energy is able to light up 73 LED light bulbs. The volumetric energy density over the two capacitors is calculated to be 67.8 μJ/cm3. The practical energy harvesting performance of the PTEG is further evaluated in the outdoor environment. Green preparation of PEDOT-based composites with outstanding electrothermal heating and durable rapid-response sensing performance for smart healthcare textiles

Abstract:Wearable electronics have attracted tremendous interest owing to their potential applications on rehabilitation training treating, and human health monitoring. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)@Cotton/spandex fabric (PEDOT@CSF) was developed for flexible, multifunctional, and smart healthcare textiles via high efficiency and environmentally friendly in situ enzymatic polymerization. PEDOT@CSF shows the good UV resistance, outstanding electrothermal heating, and excellent sensing performance. In detail, surface temperature rapidly reached to 130.6 °C for PEDOT@CSF, when the supply voltage at 10 V. The heater could carry out thermal therapy in any designated body part for patients. Meanwhile, the required temperature could easily be obtained by varying the supplied voltages. The motion of human joints (such as fingers, wrist, and elbow) and respiratory condition were recognize and monitor by PEDOT@CSF that easily attached to clothes and accessories. PEDOT:p-toluenesulfonic acid (PEDOT:TsOH) give the textiles a smart sensing ability with fast response, and excellent durability. Furthermore, electrical resistance of PEDOT@CSF exhibited better stability under heating conditions, long time storage, multiple bending, and washing cycles. In summary, we have developed an environment-friendly and general method and obtained a high-performance multifunctional conductive textile, which provide a new path for the green synthesis and improvement of conductive polymer-based materials and development of flexible thermotherapy.

Phase Transformation Enabled Textile Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Wearable Energy Harvesting and Personal Thermoregulation

Abstract:The practical applications of environmentally friendly wearable textile triboelectric nanogenerators (t-TENGs) are constrained by inadequate heat dissipation, moisture permeability, and outdoor durability, particularly in humid and high-temperature environments. This study introduces a novel passive cooling strategy by integrating super-hydrophilic titanium dioxide solvent-free TiO2 nanofluids (TiO2 nfs) into cellulose acetate (CA) fibrous membranes (TiO2 nfs@CA) to achieve human comfort and efficient energy harvesting. Interestingly, the phase transformation of TiO2 nfs around boy temperature range (32-38 degrees C) effectively regulates the surface temperature of TiO2 nfs@CA fibrous membranes. In comparison with pristine CA fabric, TiO2 nfs@CA textile demonstrates exceptional solar reflectance (93.43 %), high infrared emissivity (85 %), excellent water vapor transport rate (12.6 g m- 2 h-1), and a significant cooling effect of 4-8 degree celsius for both human skin and indoor environments. TiO2 nfs significantly enhances their ultraviolet resistance as well as mechanical properties and dielectric properties while improving triboelectric output performance with output voltage (66 V), current (2.7 mu A), and power density (82 mW m- 2). And TiO2 nfs@CA t-TENGs exhibit superior multifunctionality in terms of energy harvesting capabilities along with pressure sensing abilities for real-time movement monitoring including foot movements assessment as well as recovery evaluation for human body health maintenance purposes. Overall, TiO2 nfs@CA t-TENGs with the skin-friendly, dyeable, and recyclable properties provides a novel approach towards comfortable self-powered wearable devices that enable practical foot movement prediction alongside health monitoring.

Abstract:Wearable thermoelectric generators, capable of converting human body heat into electricity are one of the most suitable forms of power source to fabricate self-powered wearable electronic devices. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), owing to its large intrinsic bandgap and high carrier mobility is one of the most widely explored materials for thermoelectric application. In this work, 2D MoS 2 nanosheets were grown on the conductive carbon fabric (CF) by a binder-free in situ hydrothermal method and the 3D ZnO nanoparticles were decorated on them via a facile dip coating technique, to form a 3D/2D interface. Apart from providing a flexible substrate to the material, the CF aids the MoS 2 with higher carrier concentration and mobility. Thus, the pristine MoS 2 possesses the highest electrical conductivity ( σ ) of all the samples at 373 K. The 20-mg ZnO-decorated sample achieved a maximum Seebeck coefficient ( S ) of 11.7 μV/K at 373 K, which is 1.25 times higher than that of pristine MoS 2 /CF. This enhancement in S is ascribed to the higher energy filtering effect at the ZnO/MoS 2 interface that allows the flow of only high-energy carriers. The 15-mg ZnO-decorated sample with optimum S and σ had the highest power factor (PF) of 311 nW/mK 2 at 373 K which is 1.2 times higher than that of the pristine sample. This enhancement in PF is mainly due to the synergistic effect of large σ and an extremely low activation energy of 0.00802 eV. Thus, the optimum concentration of ZnO nanoparticles for an enhanced PF is 15 mg owing to its very low activation energy.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials enable effective and direct energy conversions between heat and electricity, displaying wide applications including waste/low-grade heat harvesting, local cooling, sensing and wearable electronics. Among the recently-developed organic and composite TE materials, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is perhaps the most successful and frequently reported type. Herein, we aim to review the recent advances of the synthesis, mechanism and applications of PEDOT-based TE composites. First, the research background and the history of TE materials are briefly introduced. Next, the synthesis and TE performance of PEDOT-based composites are summarized according to the sequence of films, hydrogels/aerogels and fibers/yarns. Then, the mechanism, structure and property are elucidated. After that, the recent development and its applications of power generation and sensing are highlighted. Finally, we provide an outlook on the prospects and the challenges of PEDOT-based TE composites.

Abstract:A novel wearable device with thermoelectric material as the active component is fabricated, exhibiting excellent sensing performance in motion monitoring. Combined with the excellent thermoelectric performance, ingenious device design, and optimized algorithm, the thermoelectric wearable device achieves precision recognition of hand motions. This study provides a new way of designing wearable sensors toward precision motion recognition. Smart wearable electronics have attracted increasing attention because of their great prospects in motion monitoring. To date, a specific design of thermoelectric wearable devices aiming at precision monitoring is still challenging, although thermoelectric materials and devices have witnessed significant developments. In this work, intercalated composites of reduced graphene oxide/reduced poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (rGO/rPEDOT:PSS) are reported through the insertion of PEDOT:PSS into 2D graphene oxide layers followed by precise optimization of oxidation‐level of composite, exhibiting an outstanding thermoelectric performance along with excellent thermoelectric stability and mechanical flexibility. Furthermore, a novel‐concept, simple‐structural, self‐powered thermoelectric wearable sensor is demonstrated with rGO/rPEDOT:PSS composite as the active sensing component of the thermoelectric device. Combined with the excellent thermoelectric performance, ingenious device design, and optimized algorithm, the thermoelectric wearable device achieves precision recognition of various hand motions. This study provides a new way to design wearable sensors toward the precision recognition of human motions.
