Abstract:Large-scale oil tanks are being studied all along because they have a series of advantages. For example, they can reduce the cost of manufacturing and management of the facilities, and save land. So the volume of oil tanks becomes larger and larger during their development. However, without on-site heat treatment, the thickness of the shell of traditional oil tanks is restricted to 200,000 m(3). In this paper, a new structure named Ultra-large Hydraulic-Balance oil tank with double-shell was put forward. With the method of hydraulic-balance, oil tanks of this structure could be larger than 200,000 m(3). Besides expounding the working principle in detail, a 200,000 m(3) oil tank with double-shell was also designed in the paper according to API 650, and the finite element model was used to analyze the stress including intensity and distribution of both shells in order to test and verify its security. Furthermore, its economy was analyzed by comparing with traditional oil tanks. Finally, the problem caused by the difference of liquid lever as well as was discussed. Results show that Ultra-large Hydraulic-Balance oil tank with double-shell owned advantages including rational construction, economy and easy manufacturing.

Abstract:The manufacturing standard,material,design,welding,insulation,construction of large LNG storage tanks are described.The strength and toughness of 9Ni steel may be improved by refining the grain,increasing the purity and adding alloy elements.The improper welding of 9Ni steel may cause arc magnetic blow,welding cracks and poor low-temperature toughness of welding joint,which can be solved by selecting proper welding material,minimizing the arc crater and controlling the welding heat input.For the special structure and insulation of large LNG storage tanks,it is necessary to make a detailed structure design and calculation,select appropriate insulation materials and construction scheme.To enhance the construction level as early as possible,it is urgent to make a domestic standard of large LNG storage tanks.

Abstract:With the large-scale development of refined oil storage tanks, adopting spatial reticulated hell structures as the tank dome is becoming an inevitable trend. Although reticulated shell structures have mature theory and design experience in the field of architecture, there are still many technical problems about its application in large storage tanks. The advantages and disadvantages of existing large reticulated shell structures are analyzed and compared and the selection opinions of grid type, bar section and node form are given against the structural features of large storage tanks with a reticulated shell. In order to improve the connection security of the reticulated shell and lower tank body, a new bearing structure is proposed which is applicable for large storage tanks with a reticulated shell. The calculation method for overall stability of reticulated shell dome is discussed, the critical buckling load will be calculated by the method of whole process analysis of load-displacement considering geometric nonlinearity, and the influence of lower tank body, different constraint conditions and installation deviations on the stability capacity of a reticulated shell dome. Moreover,a 50 000 m3 large storage tank with a reticulated shell is used as an example to conduct case analysis according to related standards, such as JGJ7-2010 Technical specification for space frame structures, which verities that relevant specifications are also applicable for tank reticulated shells.

Abstract:Efficient insulation technology is one of the key technologies for the development of large LH2 storage tanks. This paper aimed at a 4000 m3 LH2 spherical tank, many insulation schemes were designed, including multilayer insulation systems integrated with a vapor-cooled shield (VCS) and liquid-nitrogen-cooled shield (LN2CS). The heat transfer model was developed to predict the insulation performance of a LH2 spherical tank. The effect of the VCS position on insulation performance was studied, and the different configurations of double VCSs were compared and discussed. The results showed that the daily evaporation rate of MLI, hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) and vacuum was only 2.05 × 10−3%, 3.62 × 10−3% and 7.94 × 10−2% at 1.34 Pa, respectively. MLI was still the optimal insulation scheme for a 4000 m3 LH2 spherical tank. Meanwhile, it was found that when the single VCS was placed at the 10th layer, the heat leakage was reduced by approximately 40.5% compared with MLI. The heat leakage of parallel VCS(P-VCS) was 76.6% lower than that of MLI. The minimum heat leakage of series VCS(S-VCS) was 83.79%, 72.75% and 37.36% lower than that of MLI, single VCS and P-VCS, respectively. Additionally, the heat leakage of the LH2 tank could be reduced to less than 10 W when LN2CS was installed. These results provide a design reference for the highly efficient storage of large LH2 tanks.

Abstract:The crude oil tank with a capacity of 105m3 is the largest oil tank at present in China. To learn the distribution of stress in the fillet weld and the first and second layers of the tank, and to verify whether the design is rational and operation is safe, stress test and evaluation were made on one of the tanks. The test was conducted by the static resistance stress-strain method based on the specified on-the-spot conditions. Analysis and calculation show that, the measured value of the circumferential stress on the outer surface of the tank is consistent to the calculated value, and the maximum stress occurs near the upside of the junction of the tank's first and second layer. The tank is evaluated based on the design rules, and the result proves that the tank is designed rationally and its strength meets the need of operation.

Abstract:With the advantages of low investment, small footprint, ease of operation management etc., large-scale vertical tanks for crude oil storage have become an obvious trend. However, stress intensity of the tank wall increases with constant enlargement of oil tank's parameters, and the yield strength of the steel used as tank wall material can not be more than 490 MPa. Besides, the maximum thickness of shell plate generally should be not over 45 mm subjected to the restriction of manufacturing process. So, it is important to design the structure of tank, reasonably and reduce the stress as much as possible. This paper combines theoretical analysis and numerical simulation together, analyzing and calculating the stress of shell plate and bottom plate of an ultra-large tank for crude oil storage which is 200000 cubic meters, and comparing the stress level of three design schemes about shell plate and bottom annular plate, then giving a scheme whose stress distribution is more reasonable. The study shows that combined cylindrical shell method is applicable to the theoretical stress calculation of shell plates of ultra-large crude oil storage tanks, finite element method using contact element could simulate the stress distribution of bottom plate well, and give the optimal structure parameter scheme by controlling the hoop stress of tank wall and radial stress of bottom plate. The result of this paper has a certain practical guiding significance to the optimization design of ultra-large tanks for crude oil storage.

Abstract:In recent years, with the gradual expansion of units scale for energy industries such as oil refining, chemical and natural gas, etc. in China, pressure vessels are developing toward the large and heavy direction with the maximum wall thickness reaching hundreds of millimeters and weight exceeding one thousand tons. It not only causes huge material consumption, difficulty in manufacture and processing (even beyond current capability), but probably also lead to new failure modes and mechanisms, and significant safety risks thereby. Therefore, the lightweight design and manufacture under the premise of inherent safety has become an urgent need to break through the bottleneck of manufacturing capability and realize the material and energy conservation. In this paper, the progress of lightweight design and manufacturing technology of heavy-duty pressure vessels in recent years in China is introduced from the aspects of adjustment of material allowable strength, application of high strength steel and matching of strength and toughness, cold stretch of austenitic stainless steel, structure optimization design with multi-parameter coupling, and application of composite materials. Application cases in the construction of pressure equipments such as large hydrogenating reactors, low temperature ethylene spherical tanks, austenitic stainless steel cryogenic vessels, butyl octanol heat exchangers, etc. are also included. Finally, some suggestions on the future research are proposed including composite pressure vessels in cryogenic environment, materials genome and additive manufacturing technologies for pressure vessels.

Abstract:CATIA software is used to build two-dimensional and three-dimensional model of LNG storage tank, hexahedral meshes are generated in HYPERMESH software and ANSYS software is imported to analyze overall temperature field and thermal stress distribution of 30000m(3) LNG storage tank. According to analysis result file, the distribution regularities of temperature and thermal stress of 30000 m(3) LNG storage tank is concluded, key control points of cold insulation construction of LNG storage tank are highlighted, management of quality of cold insulation construction of LNG storage tank is tightened up and LNG construction level is upgraded.

Abstract:Hydrogen plays a vital role in the future energy system, especially for spacecraft and fuel cell vehicle. In order to avoid the venting during the liquid hydrogen storage and decrease energy loss in space application, this paper presents a numerical study of the thermal performance of a hydrogen storage tank with nozzle injection and its improvement - a guide tube. Compared with the previous storage tank without guide tube, the chilling performance of the new storage system is enhanced since the guide tube improves the heat transfer and reduces the stagnant region to meliorate the flow circulation. Distribution profiles of temperature and velocity in the storage tank have been attained to evaluate the chilling performance. The key geometric parameters are further optimized by analyzing a series of cases under different geometry settings, from which the optimized ranges of dimensionless parameters have been obtained and studied respectively. This research provides guidelines for geometrical optimization of the liquid hydrogen cryogenic storage tank, and it helps to improve the chilling performance of the storage tank and promote the utilization of hydrogen energy. Abstract:To increase the safety and reliability of ultra-large oil storage tanks,structural optimization analysis of 15×10~4 m~3 oil tanks was done.Comparing several methods for stress calculation of tanks shell and bottom plate,theory of combined cylindrical shells was proposed for calculating stress of tanks shell,and finite element analysis based on foundation settlement was proposed for stress calculation on the bottom plate.Four different structural design proposals were made according to design criterions of API 650 and JIS B 8501,in each proposals stress calculations were done and the results were compared.The consequences show that,the fourth structural design proposal which not only refers to API 650 but also uses broad steel plates obtains the minimum stress,and the assessment of stress is acceptable.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical study of the thermal performance of a storage tank with nozzle injection and its improvement---a guide tube. The cooling performance of the storage system with guide tube is enhanced. The key geometric parameters are further optimized by analyzing a series of cases for different geometry settings. The optimized ranges of dimensionless parameters has been obtained and studied respectively. This research provides guidelines for geometrical optimization of the cryogenic storage tank and helps to improve its cooling performance.

Abstract:An experimental system is built to investigate the chill-down process of a 60 m 3 horizontal cryogenic storage tank. Accordingly, a numerical model of the chill-down process is constructed to calculate the two-phase flow transition and thermal stress distribution. The chill-down processes with flow rates of 35 L/min and 43 L/min are investigated. The results show that the chill-down process of the wall can be divided into three stages, including slow cooling by cryogenic gaseous nitrogen, rapid cooling by boiling liquid nitrogen, and conduction cooling in contact with liquid nitrogen. Moreover, the maximum deformation in horizontal tanks shifts from the middle to the end of the bottom due to the uneven temperature variation during the chill-down process. The study highlights a positive correlation between the temperature gradient and the stress value. As the liquid accumulates, a large circumferential stress appears at the liquid level, resulting in the maximum stress section at the same height as the liquid level. The maximum stress except the constraint is about 248 MPa at a flow rate of 43 L/min. Overall, the analysis of the experimental and simulation results in this work provides useful information and guidance for the safe use of large horizontal cryogenic storage tanks.

Abstract:In order to satisfy the security demand of the connection between the reticulated shell dome and the tank shell,a new simple and stressing definitely bearing structure for large storage tanks with a reticula-ted shell dome is proposed based on existing connecting structure.The ANSYS is chosen for the analysis,the Finite Element model of large storage tanks with a reticulated shell dome is set up and the performance of large storage tanks between new bearing structures and directly welded structures in aspects of strength, stiffness and whole stability is analyzed and compared.Applying optimization toolbox of ANSYS Work-bench,main dimensions of the new bearing structure are optimized and designed.Research results show that compared with directly welded structures,the new bearing structure can reduce the adverse stress in reticu-lated shell dome,improve the stress distribution of the connection by the rotation among components,which indicates that the new bearing structure is suitable for large storage tanks with a reticulated shell dome;the economy and lightweight of the new bearing structure can also be improved by the optimization.

Abstract:As the global demand for lower carbon emissions intensifies, the deployment of medium and small-scale liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage tanks in heavy-duty trucking and aviation is expected to increase. However, heat leakage into these cryogenic vessels leads to a continuous increase in tank pressure, potentially resulting in sudden hydrogen release and other safety concerns. While horizontal LH2 tanks demonstrate greater suitability in the transportation sector compared to vertical tanks, investigations in this domain remain scarce. Research on horizontal tanks is crucial for safe and efficient storage. Understanding these dynamics is essential for predicting temperature and pressure changes during self-pressurization, ensuring safe liquid hydrogen storage. This study designed and built a 500-liter horizontal liquid hydrogen tank for vehicle fuel storage, following ISO 13985 standards to ensure practical applicability. The project encompassed material selection, structural design, and both stress and thermodynamic analyses. Preliminary experiments were conducted using liquid nitrogen as a substitute for liquid hydrogen. Experiments assessed tank heat leakage, vapor-cooled shield insulation performance, thermal stratification, lossless storage time, and pressure changes during self-pressurization and steady-state evaporation. Results validate the efficiency of our pressure vessel design method for complex conditions, enhancing understanding of self-pressurization and thermal stratification in horizontal tanks. The vapor-cooled shield reduced heat leakage into the tank by 22.7%, decreasing the daily evaporation rate under liquid nitrogen conditions from 1.87 wt% to 1.5 wt%. and maintaining an initial liquid level of 50% extended the lossless storage time to 50 hours in the LN2 scenario. These findings offer valuable insights for assessing the performance of subsequent liquid hydrogen experiments.

Abstract:It was considered that CHEJ507RH welding rods could completely meet the weld and design demands of the 15MnNbR steel spherical tanks after CHEJ507RH welding rods were compared with PP.J557RH welding rods,and some reasonable weld process parameters were determined through a weld crack test and a weld process estimation.The CHEJ507RH weld rods were proved to be efficient and reliable for the four(2 000m~3) spherical tanks in Changqing Petrochemical Industry Corporation.

Abstract:The LNG tanker is very important transport equipment in LNG transmission for its flexibility and ecumenical. In this paper, the principle of the high vacuum-multilayer thermal insulation were intruded and compared with vacuum-powders insulation and high vacuum insulation. It is very suitable for tanker for its characteristics as small thermal conductivity and small volume. The design and calculation of thermal structure for a 40 m 3 LNG tank used in tanker were presented. The the non-loss storage time for the tank was calculated.
