Abstract:In June, the Journal Impact Factors for 2020 have been published, namely the ratios of the number of citations received in 2020 for the articles published in that journal divided by the total number of 'citable items' published in that journal during the two preceding years. With an IF of 6.166, it is the highest JEADV has ever achieved. Amongst 68 international peer-reviewed dermatology journals it now ranks at number 7. Some quite new journals have shown a sharp rise and the well-known American journals like JAAD ('blue' journal) and JAMA Dermatology (formerly the Archives of Dermatology) even made it over 10. Congratulations to our American friends!

Abstract:BACKGROUND: A bibliometric analysis of the Annals of Laboratory Medicine (ALM) was performed to understand its position in the medical laboratory technology category and to suggest a developmental strategy.METHODS: Journal metrics, including the number of articles by publication type, country of authors, total citations, 2-year impact factor, country of cited authors, journals citing ALM, and Hirsch-index, were obtained from the Journal Citation Report and Web of Science Core Collection. Target data included ALM content in the Web of Science from January 1, 2012, to October 5, 2021. Bibliometric analysis was performed using Biblioshiny.RESULTS: The impact factor increased from 1.481 in 2013 to 3.464 in 2020. Authors belonging to the USA, China, and Korea cited ALM articles the most. Plos One, Scientific Reports, and Frontiers in Microbiology most frequently cited ALM, besides ALM itself. The Hirsch-index was 34. The co-occurrence network of Keyword Plus indicated four clusters: diagnosis, identification, prevalence, and risk. The conceptual structure map of Keyword Plus based on multiple correspondence analysis showed two clusters: bacterial susceptibility at the bench and clinical courses. The co-citation network showed that ALM was in the cluster of the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, and the Annals of Internal Medicine. The collaboration network showed that Korean authors collaborated mainly with authors from the USA, Germany, and Italy.CONCLUSIONS: The journal's promotion to an international top-tier journal has been successful. "Principles of transparency and best practice in scholarly publishing" and a preprint policy are yet to be added.

Abstract:CiteScore is a measure of the impact of a journal on the scholarly literature over its previous four calendar years. It is the ratio of the total citations to the total journal publications over this interval. For a growing journal, the number of publications in the second and subsequent years of that interval exceeds that in the first year. The more rapid the growth, the greater these differences. Publications in the first year are, of course, older than those of the second year and continue to attract citations in the second and subsequent years. Thus, the increase in citations cannot keep pace with the increase in publications, and positive journal growth skews the CiteScore metric downward. We explore this CiteScore growth penalty and arrive at a simple way to growth-adjust the CiteScore.

Abstract:In June 2020 Elsevier announced that the CiteScore metric of journals underwent a change. This work examines the effect of these changes for 40 journals, chosen from the top five and middle five (ranked by CiteScore) journals in the subject areas of General Physics and Astronomy, Materials Science, Medicine, Social Sciences) and compares to the Journal Impact Factor. It is shown that in the data studied here, the new methodology is less susceptible to influence of the proportion of editorial material in a journal, but tends to favour journals in research fields that publish articles which get cited more quickly.

Abstract:The main achievement of the journal in 2023 was an increase in the number of works received, mainly of foreign origin. The rejection percentage was 36%. The evaluation of the work of the members of the Editorial Committee had the collaboration of external referees from national and foreign institutions, especially Venezuelans living abroad. The magazine fulfilled its frequency of four issues with 41 communications in 559 pages, exceeding the number of pages from the previous year. Among the 41 works, the original works in English predominated, both from Venezuela and Latin America and countries on other continents. In evaluating the magazine by international indices, the increase in the Copernicus Index score stands out due to excellent compliance with their classification patterns. There were discrepancies between the different indexes in the citations; Clarivate reported 204, and Sco-pus only 20. Scopus recognizes only 44 citations in the four years (2019-2022), and Scielo recognizes 498 in that same period. The Crossref report was of more than 13,000 accesses in 2023, with Spanish-language Reviews being the most frequent, which suggests that Latin America is the primary source of readers for the magazine. This observation corroborates the results of our website, where the main accesses come from American countries. We hope that in 2024, Investigación Clínica will increase its national and international recognition; it would be a gift to the memory of its founder, Américo Negrette, who would be celebrating the centenary of his birth in 2024.

Abstract:In 2023, Baishideng Publishing Group (Baishideng ) routinely published 47 open-access journals, including 46 English-language journals and 1 Chinese-language journal. Our successes were accomplished through the collective dedicated efforts of Baishideng staffs, Editorial Board Members, and Peer Reviewers. Among these 47 Baishideng journals, 7 are included in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and 6 in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). With the support of Baishideng authors, company staffs, Editorial Board Members, and Peer Reviewers, the publication work of 2023 is about to be successfully completed. This editorial summarizes the 2023 activities and accomplishments of the 13 SCIE- and ESCI-indexed Baishideng journals, outlines the Baishideng publishing policy changes and additions made this year, and highlights the unique advantages of Baishideng journals.

Detecting anomalous citation groups in journal networks

Abstract:The ever-increasing competitiveness in the academic publishing market incentivizes journal editors to pursue higher impact factors. This translates into journals becoming more selective, and, ultimately, into higher publication standards. However, the fixation on higher impact factors leads some journals to artificially boost impact factors through the coordinated effort of a "citation cartel" of journals. "Citation cartel" behavior has become increasingly common in recent years, with several instances being reported. Here, we propose an algorithm -- named CIDRE -- to detect anomalous groups of journals that exchange citations at excessively high rates when compared against a null model that accounts for scientific communities and journal size. CIDRE detects more than half of the journals suspended from Journal Citation Reports due to anomalous citation behavior in the year of suspension or in advance. Furthermore, CIDRE detects many new anomalous groups, where the impact factors of the member journals are lifted substantially higher by the citations from other member journals. We describe a number of such examples in detail and discuss the implications of our findings with regard to the current academic climate.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of the quality of academic journals is of great significance. While Journal Impact Factor (JIF), calculated by Clarivate and based upon the Web of Science literature database, and CiteScore (CS), developed by Elseiver and based upon the Scopus database, have enjoyed high uptake worldwide, efforts continue towards creation of other scientometric indexes that will provide ever-greater qualitative insights into journal impact. Such efforts have yielded the newly-launched Journal Article Influence Index (JAII), which is based on the Reference Citation Analysis (RCA) database, an open multidisciplinary citation analysis database based on artificial intelligence technology.AIM: To evaluate and summarize the similarities and differences between JAII and JIF/CS as journal evaluation indicators, and provide an intuitive method for visual representation of the related data.METHODS: We searched the Journal Citation Reports to obtain the 2021 JIF list, downloaded the CS list updated in July on the Scopus website, and collected the comprehensive list of 2022 JAIIs from the RCA database (www.referencecitationanalysis.com).RESULTS: Our research results revealed that by breaking through the time limit of mainstream journal evaluation methods, the JAII is able to perform well in data reliability, establishing its benefit as a complementary scientometric index to JIF and CS.CONCLUSION: JAII provides comprehensive assessment of the quality and performance of journals.

Bibliometric analysis of the official journals of internal medicine societies in Europe

Abstract:Introduction: Bibliometrics evaluates the quality of biomedical journals. The aim of this study has been to compare the main bibliometric indexes of the official journals of scientific societies of Internal Medicine in Europe. Material and methods: Bibliometric information was obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. Both impact metrics (Journal Impact Factor [JIF], CiteScore) and normalized metrics (Journal Citation Indicator [JCI], Normalized Eigenfactor, Source Normalized Impact per Paper [SNIP] and SCImago Journal Rank [SJR]) of the journals for the year 2022 were analyzed, and their evolution over the last decade was described. Results: Twenty-three official journals from 33 scientific societies were evaluated. Eight journals were included in WoS and 11 in Scopus. The best positioned journals in 2022 were: 1) European Journal of Internal Medicine, which ranked in the first quartile (Q1) for JIF, CiteScore and JCI metrics, exceeding values of 1 in Normalized Eigenfactor and SNIP metrics; 2) Internal and Emergency Medicine, with Q1 for CiteScore and JCI metrics, and with values >1 in Normalized EigenFactor and SNIP metrics; 3) Polish Archives of Internal Medicine, with Q1 for JCI metrics; 4) Revista Clínica Española, with Q2 for JIF, CiteScore and JCI metrics; and 5) Acta Medica Belgica, with Q2 for CiteScore and JCI metrics. These journals increased their impact metrics in the last 3 years, in parallel with the COVID pandemic. Conclusions: Five official journals of European Internal Medicine societies, including Revista Clínica Española, meet high quality standards.
