Abstract:A matrix framework is established for generating stereo vectorial holography by imposing amplitude, phase, and polarization restrictions to specific planes at three‐dimensional space. The reconstructed holographic image can exhibit propagation‐dependent vectorial features under arbitrary polarization incidence. The proposed method may promote the advancement of applications including polarization‐switchable devices, optical trapping, and microscopy, as well as laser processing. Metasurfaces have exhibited powerful abilities for manipulating multiple fundamental properties of light including amplitude, phase, polarization, and so on. However, these strategies are commonly concentrated on the modulations at a single transverse plane of output light. The spatial evolutions of these properties, especially the polarizations along longitudinal direction, are rarely investigated. Here, a stereo Jones matrix holography method is presented for understanding the spatial evolution including polarization, amplitude, and phase variations along the longitudinal direction. Stereo holographic algorithms in matrix framework are developed to generate multiplane and even continuously varied vectorial holographic images that exhibit distinct polarization states at each transverse plane. This method provides a benchmark of longitudinal polarization transformations as well as beam modulations by simply using a single planar metasurface without extra burdens on optical path. In addition, the obtained propagation‐dependent features can favor the realizing of on‐demand transverse and longitudinal spatial evolution from the perspective of the holographic method. Furthermore, it may also promote the development of related areas including polarization‐switchable devices, optical trapping, microscopy, laser processing, etc.

Abstract:Super cells or multi-layer merasurfaces are used to realize various multi-functional and exotic functional devices. In such methods, the design space expands exponentially as more variable parameters are introduced, however, this will necessitate huge computational effort without special treatment. The function of a metasurface can be described mathematically by a Jones matrix. When the gap between adjacent atoms is sufficiently large, the overall Jones matrix of a 3D lattice which is composed of multiple meta-atoms can be obtained by adding or multiplying each meta-atom's Jones matrix for parallel or cascaded arrangement, respectively. Reversely, an arbitrary Jones matrix can be decomposed to a combination of diagonal and rotation matrices. This means the devices with various functions can be constructed by combining, cascading, and rotating a kind of atoms, thus the computation requirements will be reduced significantly. In this work, the feasibility of this approach is demonstrated with two cases, circular polarization selective transmission and resemble optical activity. Both simulation and experiment are consistent with hypothesis. This method can manipulate all degrees of freedom in a Jones matrix and reduce design complexity and may find applications to extend the scope of meta-optics.

Abstract:By adopting the characteristic features of in‐line holography concept in combination with polarization imaging, a compact single‐shot Jones microscopy system capable of quantitative polarization imaging is developed. In addition, the technique tackles the dynamic imaging challenges by incorporating a real‐time Jones‐matrix synthesis algorithm and investigates the transient polarization properties of anisotropic materials using the most complete and comprehensive Jones algebra. The Jones matrix is a powerful quantitative tool for polarimetric imaging and characterization, where the matrix elements represent the intrinsic optical properties of the anisotropic objects on interaction with the polarized light. Most of the state‐of‐the‐art single‐shot Jones‐matrix imaging techniques rely on interferometric methods, which makes the design complex with the use of large number of polarization optics and produces space‐bandwidth limitations. The simultaneous extraction of Jones matrix elements with a compact system design is still a technical challenge in view of its potential applications in biomedical and real‐time characterization scenarios. In this paper, the imaging features of the in‐line holography are exploited to develop a compact polarization in‐line holography (PIH) system capable of single‐shot extraction of Jones‐matrix elements. The technique achieves simultaneous orthogonal polarization state generation and corresponding polarization multiplexed in‐line hologram detection by utilizing a compact polarization geometry. The imaging compatibility and measurement accuracy of the method is experimentally validated by the real‐time synthesis of Jones‐matrix elements corresponding to custom designed polarization sensitive samples and standard birefringent resolution target. Furthermore, to demonstrate the application of the system in dynamic imaging, the transient polarization changes of a custom‐designed parallel nematic liquid crystal display (LCD) are investigated.
Breaking the limitation of polarization multiplexing in optical metasurfaces with engineered noise.

Abstract:Noise is usually undesired yet inevitable in science and engineering. However, by introducing the engineered noise to the precise solution of Jones matrix elements, we break the fundamental limit of polarization multiplexing capacity of metasurfaces that roots from the dimension constraints of the Jones matrix. We experimentally demonstrate up to 11 independent holographic images using a single metasurface illuminated by visible light with different polarizations. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest capacity reported for polarization multiplexing. Combining the position multiplexing scheme, the metasurface can generate 36 distinct images, forming a holographic keyboard pattern. This discovery implies a new paradigm for high-capacity optical display, information encryption, and data storage.
Diatomic Metasurface for Efficient Six‐Channel Modulation of Jones Matrix

Abstract:A compact diatomic metasurface platform to realize efficient six‐channel modulation of Jones matrix is proposed. By exquisitely designing propagation and geometric phases of two anisotropic nanopillars with near‐unity transmission, the complex amplitudes of the three Jones‐matrix components can be independently controlled. This work reaches the upper limit of the ability of the single‐layer structure to modulate the Jones matrix. Multi‐channel modulation of Jones matrix facilitates encoding a variety of different functions in metasurfaces. However, multiple channels are usually accompanied by a high system complexity and a low efficiency. Here, a compact and effective diatomic metasurface platform that can impose the six‐channel modulation of Jones matrix efficiently is proposed. The metasurface consists of two anisotropic nanopillars with exquisitely designed structural sizes and rotation angles with near‐unity transmission. To verify the methodology, the independent regulation of six Jones‐matrix channels is demonstrated, and three nanoprinting images and three holographic images are integrated into a single metasurface. Furthermore, by interleaving two diatomic meta‐atoms operating at two different wavelengths within a super‐pixel, the multiplexing capacity of the Jones matrix is extended to twelve channels, paving the way to a broader exploitation of multi‐functional optical devices in optical communications, data storage and encryption, and so on.

Abstract:Polarization manipulation based on the Jones matrix facilitates the enhancement of light-matter interactions. Recently, arbitrarily tailorable polarization states generated with the assistance of a diatomic metasurface effectively reduce the complexity of the system. However, a single polarization switching behavior hinders the application of meta-platforms in cryptographic imaging. Here, we theoretically propose and design a single-layer diatomic all-dielectric metasurface working in the terahertz (THz) band, which can efficiently realize bi-functional polarization switching according to the Jones matrix. Such a meta-platform is assembled from two anisotropic silicon pillars with carefully optimized lateral dimensions and in-plane twist angles. Benefiting from the flexible assembly of half-wave plate (HWP) and quarter-wave plate (QWP), the polarization states generated by the constructed metasurfaces in the transmission mode can be arbitrarily tailored. The feasibility of this diatomic metasurface is further validated by a broadband near-field imaging device, paving the way for broader system applications in cryptographic imaging, data storage, and chiral sensing.

Abstract:Recently, the multifunctional terahertz metasurface holography (meta-holography) has garnered significant attention and sparked wide discussion because of its capacity to carry a large amount of information. However, traditional multifunctional meta-holographies, achieved by integrating metasurfaces with active materials or MEMS technology, have exhibited distinct shortcomings owing to the intrinsic properties of active materials, such as slow response, complex structure, or low reliability. Herein, a transmissive anisotropic metasurface platform, composed of all-dielectric meta-atoms including three components: elliptical silicon pillars (Si-pillar), circular Si-pillars, and a quartz substrate sandwiched between them, is proposed. This platform enables the implementation of dual-channel holographic images by utilizing linear polarization (LP) multiplexing and circular polarization (CP) decoupling. As proof of concept, two transmissive anisotropic metasurfaces (MS-1 and MS-2) are desiged. When illuminated with two orthogonal LP-polarization waves, the MS-1 displays holographic images of the letters "X" and "Y" in their corresponding co-polarized channels by switching the LP-polarized direction. Additionally, under left-circularly polarized (LCP) incidence on MS-2, two holographic images with different patterns ("L" and "R") are reconstructed in the co-polarized channel and cross-polarized channel respectively. Therefore, these polarization-multiplexed or polarization-decoupled metasurfaces exhibit considerable potential for applications in multifunctional integration and high information capacity.

Metasurfaces with Full Control over Asymmetric Transmission of Light

Abstract:The study of optical systems with asymmetric responses has grown significantly due to their broad application potential in various fields. In particular, Janus metasurfaces are notable for their ability to control light asymmetrically at the pixel level within thin films. However, previous demonstrations were restricted to the partial control of asymmetric transmission for a limited set of input polarizations, focusing primarily on scalar functionalities. Here, we introduce optical metasurfaces consisting of bi-layer silicon nanostructures that can achieve a fully generalized form of asymmetric transmission for any possible input polarization. Their designs owe much to our theoretical model of asymmetric optical transmission in reciprocal systems that explicates the relationship between front- and back-side Jones matrices for general cases, revealing a fundamental correlation between the polarization-direction channels of opposing sides of incidence. To practically circumvent this constraint, we propose a method to partition transmission space, enabling the realization of four distinct vector functionalities within the target volume. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate polarization-direction-multiplexed Janus vector holograms generating four vector holograms. When integrated with computational vector polarizer arrays, this approach facilitates optical encryption with a high level of obscurity. We anticipate that our mathematical framework and novel material systems for generalized asymmetric transmission may pave the way for applications such as optical computations, sensing, and imaging.

Abstract:Multi‐dimensional multiplexed metasurface holography extends holographic information capacity, promises revolutionary advancements for vivid imaging, information storage and encryption. However, achieving multifunctional metasurface holography by forward design method is still difficult since it relies heavily on Jones matrix engineering, which places high demands on physical knowledge and processing technology. To break these limitations and simplify the design process, here we propose an end‐to‐end inverse design framework. By directly linking the metasurface to the reconstructed images and employing a loss function to guide the update of metasurface, the calculation of hologram can be omitted, thus greatly simplifying the design process. In addition, the requirements on the completeness of meta‐library can also be significantly reduced, allowing multi‐channel hologram to be achieved using meta‐atoms with only two degrees of freedom, which is very friendly to processing. By exploiting the proposed method, metasurface hologram containing up to 12 channels of multi‐wavelength, multi‐plane and multi‐polarization are designed and experimentally demonstrated, which exhibits the state‐of‐the‐art information multiplexing capacity of the metasurface composed of simple meta‐atoms. Our method is conducive to promoting the intelligent design of multifunctional meta‐devices, and it is expected to eventually accelerate the application of meta‐devices in colorful display, imaging, storage and other fields. Abstract:Dynamic measurement of the Jones matrix is crucial in investigating polarization light fields, which have wide applications in biophysics, chemistry, and mineralogy. However, acquiring the four elements of the Jones matrix instantly is difficult, hindering the characterization of random media and transient processes. In this study, we propose a single-shot measurement method of the Jones matrix for anisotropic media called "four-channel digital polarization holography" (FC-DPH). The FC-DPH system is created by a slightly off-axis superposition of reference light waves, which are modulated by a spatial light modulator (SLM), and signal light waves that pass through a Ronchi grating. The SLM enables flexible adjustment of the spatial carrier frequency, which can be adapted to different anisotropic media. The four elements of the Jones matrix can be obtained from the interferogram through the inverse Fourier transform. Optical experiments on anisotropic objects validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:The emerging metasurfaces with the exceptional capability of manipulating an arbitrary wavefront have revived the holography with unprecedented prospects. However, most of the reported metaholograms suffer from limited polarization controls for a restrained bandwidth in addition to their complicated meta-atom designs with spatially variant dimensions. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of vectorial holography based on diatomic metasurfaces consisting of metamolecules formed by two orthogonal meta-atoms. On the basis of a simply linear relationship between phase and polarization modulations with displacements and orientations of identical meta-atoms, active diffraction of multiple polarization states and reconstruction of holographic images are simultaneously achieved, which is robust against both incident angles and wavelengths. Leveraging this appealing feature, broadband vectorial holographic images with spatially varying polarization states and dual-way polarization switching functionalities have been demonstrated, suggesting a new route to achromatic diffractive elements, polarization optics, and ultrasecure anticounterfeiting.

Reaching the efficiency limit of arbitrary polarization transformation with non-orthogonal metasurfaces

Abstract:Polarization transformation is at the foundation of modern applications in photonics and quantum optics. Notwithstanding their applicative interests, basic theoretical and experimental efforts are still needed to exploit the full potential of polarization optics. Here, we reveal that the coherent superposition of two non-orthogonal eigen-states of Jones matrix can improve drastically the efficiency of arbitrary polarization transformation with respect to classical orthogonal polarization optics. By exploiting metasurface with stacking and twisted configuration, we have implemented a powerful configuration, termed "non-orthogonal metasurfaces", and have experimentally demonstrated arbitrary input-output polarization modulation reaching nearly 100% transmission efficiency in a broadband and angle-insensitive manner. Additionally, we have proposed a routing methodology to project independent phase holograms with quadruplex circular polarization components. Our results outline a powerful paradigm to achieve extremely efficient polarization optics, and polarization multiplexing for communication and information encryption at microwave and optical frequencies.
Polarization-multiplexed Huygens Metasurface Holography.

Abstract:Huygens metasurface, as a subcategory of metamaterials, shows great potential in the capacity and efficiency of electromagnetic wave manipulation within a subwavelength scale. Here, the transmission-type Huygens metasurface is demonstrated for complete and independent control of orthogonally polarized transmitted waves by constructing pairs of crossed electric and magnetic resonances in three-sheet meta-atoms as the building blocks for holographic imaging. Under incoherent horizontally and vertically polarized illuminations, two designated holographic images with negligible mutual interferences are accomplished with at least 62.95% measured imaging efficiency and 63.53 signal-to-noise ratio, respectively. This work addresses several major issues in traditional polarization-multiplexed holography with regard to transmission-coefficient manipulation capacity, image fidelity, and simple fabrication technique, empowering advanced research and applications in polarization-selective microwave devices and information processing.

Abstract:Abstract Contemporary studies in polarization multiplexing are hindered by the intrinsic orthogonality constraints of polarization states, which restrict the scope of multiplexing channels and their practical applications. This research transcends these barriers by introducing an innovative nonorthogonal polarization-basis multiplexing approach. Utilizing spatially varied eigen-polarization states within metaatoms, we successfully reconstruct globally nonorthogonal channels that exhibit minimal crosstalk. This method not only facilitates the generation of free-vector holograms, achieving complete degrees-of-freedom in three nonorthogonal channels with ultra-low energy leakage, but it also significantly enhances the dimensions of the Jones matrix, expanding it to a groundbreaking 10 × 10 scale. The fusion of a controllable eigen-polarization engineering mechanism with a vectorial diffraction neural network culminates in the experimental creation of 55 intricate holographic patterns across these expanded channels. This advancement represents a profound shift in the field of polarization multiplexing, unlocking opportunities in advanced holography and quantum encryption, among other applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a generic formula for calculating the circular polarization preservation and conversion rate of metasurfaces based on the Jones matrix method. Specifically, we analyze the polarization state of light reflected from two types of classical metasurfaces: asymmetrical and symmetrical. We also explore the bandwidth of co circular polarization reflectance and the thickness of the dielectric layer. This progress provides useful criteria for designing metasurface-based polarizers.

Abstract:Metasurfaces provide a compact and powerful platform for manipulating the fundamental properties of light, and have shown unprecedented capabilities in both optical holographic display and information encryption. For increasing information display/storage capacity, metasurfaces with more polarization manipulation channel and full-color holographic functionality are now an urgent requirement. Here, a minimalist dielectric metasurface with the capability of full-color holography encoded with arbitrary polarization is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Without the daunting exploratory and computational problem in nanostructure searching, full-color holographic images can be multiplexed into arbitrary polarization channels through vectorial ptychography and k-space ptychography based on tetratomic macropixel geometric phase metasurfaces. Thanks to the full degree of freedom tuning in polarization and color spaces, the application scenarios such as holographic 3D imaging and information encryption are realized. The strategy exhibits promising potential in applications of 3Dl display, augmented/virtual reality, high-density data storage, and encryption.
