Abstract:Super cells or multi-layer merasurfaces are used to realize various multi-functional and exotic functional devices. In such methods, the design space expands exponentially as more variable parameters are introduced, however, this will necessitate huge computational effort without special treatment. The function of a metasurface can be described mathematically by a Jones matrix. When the gap between adjacent atoms is sufficiently large, the overall Jones matrix of a 3D lattice which is composed of multiple meta-atoms can be obtained by adding or multiplying each meta-atom's Jones matrix for parallel or cascaded arrangement, respectively. Reversely, an arbitrary Jones matrix can be decomposed to a combination of diagonal and rotation matrices. This means the devices with various functions can be constructed by combining, cascading, and rotating a kind of atoms, thus the computation requirements will be reduced significantly. In this work, the feasibility of this approach is demonstrated with two cases, circular polarization selective transmission and resemble optical activity. Both simulation and experiment are consistent with hypothesis. This method can manipulate all degrees of freedom in a Jones matrix and reduce design complexity and may find applications to extend the scope of meta-optics.

Abstract:A compact diatomic metasurface platform to realize efficient six‐channel modulation of Jones matrix is proposed. By exquisitely designing propagation and geometric phases of two anisotropic nanopillars with near‐unity transmission, the complex amplitudes of the three Jones‐matrix components can be independently controlled. This work reaches the upper limit of the ability of the single‐layer structure to modulate the Jones matrix. Multi‐channel modulation of Jones matrix facilitates encoding a variety of different functions in metasurfaces. However, multiple channels are usually accompanied by a high system complexity and a low efficiency. Here, a compact and effective diatomic metasurface platform that can impose the six‐channel modulation of Jones matrix efficiently is proposed. The metasurface consists of two anisotropic nanopillars with exquisitely designed structural sizes and rotation angles with near‐unity transmission. To verify the methodology, the independent regulation of six Jones‐matrix channels is demonstrated, and three nanoprinting images and three holographic images are integrated into a single metasurface. Furthermore, by interleaving two diatomic meta‐atoms operating at two different wavelengths within a super‐pixel, the multiplexing capacity of the Jones matrix is extended to twelve channels, paving the way to a broader exploitation of multi‐functional optical devices in optical communications, data storage and encryption, and so on.

Abstract:On-chip metasurface for guided wave radiation works as an upgrade of conventional grating couplers, enriching the interconnection between guided wave and free-space optical field. However, the number of controllable parameters in equivalent Jones matrix of on-chip metasurface is limited that restricts the channels for multiplexing. Here, a supercell design based on detour phase and geometric phase has been proposed to reach full-parametric modulation of Jones matrix. As proof of concept, four independent sets of amplitude-phase channels have been experimentally demonstrated through a single on-chip metasurface. Moreover, through joint modulation of three phase mechanisms including detour phase, geometric phase and propagation phase, the Jones matrix could be decoupled from forward- and backward-propagating guided waves for direction multiplexing. This work paves the way for guided wave radiation towards high-capacity multiplexing and may further extend its application in optical communications, optical displays and augmented/virtual reality.

Abstract:The manipulation of electromagnetic wavefronts using metasurfaces has garnered significant attention and found numerous applications. Recently, the focus has shifted towards reconfigurable metasurfaces, yet achieving dynamic control over their bianisotropy remains challenging. In this study, we propose a novel approach utilizing a 3D curved rotating magnetoelectric system. By manipulating the lateral length, radius, and gap of split ring resonators, we demonstrate the ability to modulate frequency. Additionally, we analyze the asymmetric reflection properties of the rotating metasurface and calculate its bianisotropy in multiple scattering scenarios. Finally, we showcase the utility of this rotating system for beam steering. Our findings suggest promising implications for communication and imaging technologies.

Abstract:Janus Metasurfaces with Arbitrary Polarization Control The first Janus metasurfaces demonstrate directionally asymmetric orbital angular momentum generation from arbitrary spin. Titania‐based meta‐atoms enable operation in the visible range, extending beyond prior demonstrations in microwave and mid‐infrared regions. Meta‐atoms provide local/global rotation and width control, achieving global directional multifunctionality tailored by the Jones matrix. Abstract:Noise is usually undesired yet inevitable in science and engineering. However, by introducing the engineered noise to the precise solution of Jones matrix elements, we break the fundamental limit of polarization multiplexing capacity of metasurfaces that roots from the dimension constraints of the Jones matrix. We experimentally demonstrate up to 11 independent holographic images using a single metasurface illuminated by visible light with different polarizations. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest capacity reported for polarization multiplexing. Combining the position multiplexing scheme, the metasurface can generate 36 distinct images, forming a holographic keyboard pattern. This discovery implies a new paradigm for high-capacity optical display, information encryption, and data storage.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been extensive research on planar metasurfaces capable of arbitrarily controlling scattered fields. However, rigorous studies on conformal metasurfaces, such as those that are cylindrical, have been few in number likely due to their more complex geometry. Here, wave propagation in cascaded cylindrical structures consisting of layers of dielectric spacers and azimuthally-varying metasurfaces (subwavelength patterned metallic claddings) is investigated. A wave matrix approach, which incorporates the advantages of both ABCD matrices and scattering matrices (S matrices), is adopted. Wave matrices are used to model the higher order coupling between metasurface layers, overcoming fabrication difficulties associated with previous works. The proposed framework provides an efficient approach to synthesize the inhomogeneous sheet admittances that realize a desired cylindrical field transformation. Design examples are reported to illustrate the power and potential applications of the proposed method in antenna design and stealth technology.

Abstract:The first Janus metasurfaces convert asymmetric orbital angular momentum directionally from arbitrary spin angular momentum. Titania‐based meta‐atoms enable operation in the visible range. These meta‐atoms also offer local and global rotation, as well as width control, achieving multifunctionality in a single‐layer design, surpassing previous approaches based on spatial multiplexing or vertical stacking. Janus metasurfaces, offering versatile light manipulation contingent on incident direction, are explored across microwave to mid‐infrared spectra. Nonetheless, prior designs often resort to spatial multiplexing or vertical stacking, entailing complex fabrication. Metallic Janus metasurfaces, owing to material properties, suffer notable Ohmic losses in the visible spectrum. In this study, Single‐layer TiO2‐based Janus metasurfaces with arbitrary polarization control is experimentally demonstrated, exhibiting directionally asymmetric functionalities in spin and orbital angular momentum (OAM). A novel Jones matrix formulation tailored for Janus metasurfaces is presented, enabling efficient generation of two asymmetric, high‐purity OAM states of vortex beams at wavelength of 532 nm, contingent on incidence direction. This innovation facilitates compact and versatile phase manipulation, encompassing applications such as lasers and optical combiners, thereby expanding its utility across diverse domains.

Abstract:Transmissive metasurfaces have provided an efficient platform to manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves, but previously adopted multilayer meta-atoms are too thick and/or the design approach fully relies on brute-force simulations without physical understandings. Here, based on coupled-mode theory (CMT) analyses on multilayer meta-atoms of distinct types, it is found that meta-atoms of a specific type only allows the phase coverage over a particular range, thus suitable for polarization-control applications. However, combinations of meta-atoms with distinct types are necessary for building ultra-thin wavefront-control meta-devices requiring 360° phase coverage. Based on these physical understandings, high-efficiency meta-atoms are designed/fabricated, and used to construct three typical meta-devices, including quarter- and half-wave plates and a beam deflector. Our results elucidate the physics underlying the interplay between thicknesses and performances of transmissive metasurfaces, which can guide the realizations of miniaturized transmissive meta-devices in different frequency domains.
Directional Janus Metasurface

Abstract:Janus monolayers, a class of two-faced 2D materials, have received significant attention in electronics, due to their unusual conduction properties stemming from their inherent out-of-plane asymmetry. Their photonic counterparts recently allowed for the control of hydrogenation/dehydrogenation processes, yielding drastically different responses for opposite light excitation spins. A passive Janus metasurface composed of cascaded subwavelength anisotropic impedance sheets is demonstrated. By introducing a rotational twist in their geometry, asymmetric transmission with the desired phase function is realized. Their broken out-of-plane symmetry realizes different functions for opposite propagation directions, enabling direction-dependent versatile functionalities. A series of passive Janus metasurfaces that enable functionalities including one-way anomalous refraction, one-way focusing, asymmetric focusing, and direction-controlled holograms are experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Reflective multichannel metasurfaces are flat reflectors that can control incident and reflected waves in a number of propagating directions simultaneously. However, they are always densely discretized with a high spatial resolution, which increases the manufacturing complexity. In this Letter, to the best of our knowledge, a new method that combines the array antenna theory with the metagratings theory is proposed. We demonstrate that the unit cells with a linear gradient phase in each period of the metasurfaces can eliminate specific space harmonics. With this method, multichannel metasurfaces can be designed with sparse unit cells, and high efficiency is maintained simultaneously. As proofs of the method, we design three different terahertz multichannel metasurfaces with no more than three unit cells per period. The simplification of structures can efficiently reduce the manufacturing complexity. This work may open up new routes in designing multichannel metasurfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a generic formula for calculating the circular polarization preservation and conversion rate of metasurfaces based on the Jones matrix method. Specifically, we analyze the polarization state of light reflected from two types of classical metasurfaces: asymmetrical and symmetrical. We also explore the bandwidth of co circular polarization reflectance and the thickness of the dielectric layer. This progress provides useful criteria for designing metasurface-based polarizers.

Abstract:Flat optics or metasurfaces have opened new frontiers in wavefront shaping and its applications. Polarization optics is one prominent area which has greatly benefited from the shape-birefringence of metasurfaces. However, flat optics comprising a single layer of meta-atoms can only perform a subset of polarization transformations, constrained by a symmetric Jones matrix. This limitation can be tackled using metasurfaces composed of bilayer meta-atoms but exhausting all possible combinations of geometries to build a bilayer metasurface library is a very daunting task. Consequently, bilayer metasurfaces have been widely treated as a cascade (product) of two decoupled single-layer metasurfaces. Here, we test the validity of this assumption by considering a metasurface made of TiO2 on fused silica substrate at a design wavelength of 532 nm. We explore regions in the design space where the coupling between the top and bottom layers can be neglected, i.e., producing a far-field response which approximates that of two decoupled single-layer metasurfaces. We complement this picture with the near-field analysis to explore the underlying physics in regions where both layers are strongly coupled. Our analysis is general and it allows the designer to efficiently build a multi-layer metasurface, either in transmission or reflection, by only running one full-wave simulation for a single-layer metasurface.

Single-Layer Programmable Metasurface for Manipulating Both Linearly and Circularly Polarized Electromagnetic Waves

Abstract:Programmable metasurfaces provide an innovative scenario to carry out promising control of electromagnetic waves. However, most works focus on the manipulation of only linearly polarized (LP) or circularly polarized (CP) waves, and multilayer configurations are typically desired due to the existence of direct current biasing networks. Here, a general strategy for designing programmable metasurfaces for the manipulation of both LP and CP waves is proposed and verified. As a result, the real-time programmable manipulation of quad-LP (x-polarized, y-polarized, u-polarized, v-polarized) and dual-CP (right-hand, left-hand) waves could be achieved. Moreover, by placing both the direct current biasing network and the finely designed isolation circuit on top of the metasurface, only a single dielectric layer is required for such a programmable metasurface. As an example, a single-layer programmable metasurface consisting of 16 × 16 meta-atoms is designed, fabricated, and measured. The PIN diodes incorporated into each meta-atom are used as active components to provide a 1-bit reflective phase control. By shifting the working states of each PIN diode in the meta-atom, wide-angle beam scanning can be obtained. Both the simulated and measured results verify the capacity of the proposed strategy and demonstrate that the designed single-layer programmable metasurface exhibits stable beam scanning for both LP and CP waves, enabling promising applications in future wireless communications.

Abstract:Janus monolayers have long been captivated as a popular notion for breaking in-plane and out-of-plane structural symmetry. Originated from chemistry and materials science, the concept of Janus functions have been recently extended to ultrathin metasurfaces by arranging meta-atoms asymmetrically with respect to the propagation or polarization direction of the incident light. However, such metasurfaces are intrinsically static and the information they carry can be straightforwardly decrypted by scanning the incident light directions and polarization states once the devices are fabricated. In this Letter, we present a dynamic Janus metasurface scheme in the visible spectral region. In each super unit cell, three plasmonic pixels are categorized into two sets. One set contains a magnesium nanorod and a gold nanorod that are orthogonally oriented with respect to each other, working as counter pixels. The other set only contains a magnesium nanorod. The effective pixels on the Janus metasurface can be reversibly regulated by hydrogenation/dehydrogenation of the magnesium nanorods. Such dynamic controllability at visible frequencies allows for flat optical elements with novel functionalities including beam steering, bifocal lensing, holographic encryption, and dual optical function switching.

Abstract:Polarization response of artificially structured nano-antennas can be exploited to design innovative optical components, also dubbed "vectorial metasurfaces", for the modulation of phase, amplitude, and polarization with subwavelength spatial resolution. Recent efforts in conceiving Jones matrix formalism led to the advancement of vectorial metasurfaces to independently manipulate any arbitrary phase function of orthogonal polarization states. Here, we are taking advantages of this formalism to design and experimentally validate the performance of CMOS compatible Jones matrix metasurfaces monolithically integrated with standard VCSELs for on-chip spin-decoupling and phase shaping. Our approach enables accessing the optical spin states of VCSELs in an ultra-compact way with previously unattainable phase controllability. By exploiting spin states as a new degree of freedom for laser wavefront engineering, our platform is capable of operating and reading-out the spin-momentum of lasers associated with injected spin carriers, which would potentially play a pivotal role for the development of emerging spin-optoelectronic devices.
