Abstract:Janus metasurfaces, a category of two-faced two-dimensional (2D) materials, are emerging as a promising platform for designing multifunctional metasurfaces by exploring the intrinsic propagation direction (k-direction) of electromagnetic waves. Their out-of-plane asymmetry is utilized for achieving distinct functions selectively excited by choosing the propagation directions, providing an effective strategy to meet the growing demand for the integration of more functionalities into a single optoelectronic device. Here, we propose the concept of direction-duplex Janus metasurface for full-space wave control yielding drastically different transmission and reflection wavefronts for the same polarized incidence with opposite k-directions. A series of Janus metasurface devices that enable asymmetric full-space wave manipulations, such as integrated metalens, beam generators, and fully direction-duplex meta-holography, are experimentally demonstrated. We envision the Janus metasurface platform proposed here to open new possibilities toward a broader exploration of creating sophisticated multifunctional meta-devices ranging from microwaves to optical systems.
Completely Spin-Decoupled Dual-Phase Hybrid Metasurfaces for Arbitrary Wavefront Control

Abstract:Controlling light with a thin flat device is highly desirable in modern optics. A particular prospect in this area is a metasurface that independently shows distinct functionalities for different kinds of incoming waves. However, to date this is mostly achieved on anisotropic metasurfaces based on different propagation phases under two orthogonal linear polarizations. On the other hand, achieving multifunctionality for the two circularly polarized (CP) waves is very important in view of the growing significance of spin photonics. However, achieving completely decoupled optical functions for different photon spins is very challenging and remains elusive. Available attempts were only confined to locked spin-flipped phase profile to achieve opposite vortex modes, converged/diverged focusing, and interchanged holographic images. Here, we propose a general strategy to break this limitation by involving hybrid geometric and propagation phases with extremely low polarization cross-talk (an order of magnitude suppression). We experimentally demonstrate our scheme with two versatile CP bifunctional devices operating at microwaves. Besides, the possible applications have been illustrated from the perspective of stealth and information entropy by imposing dual irregular phase patterns in two completely decoupled helicity channels. The finding in this study is expected to trigger great interest in electromagnetic/optical integration and complex electromagnetic wave manipulations with a new degree of freedom.
Directional Phase and Polarization Manipulation Using Janus Metasurfaces

Abstract:Janus metasurfaces, exemplifying two-faced 2D metamaterials, have shown unprecedented capabilities in asymmetrically manipulating the wavefront of electromagnetic waves in both forward and backward propagating directions, enabling novel applications in asymmetric information processing, security, and signal multiplexing. However, current Janus metasurfaces only allow for directional phase manipulation, hindering their broader application potential. Here, the study proposes a versatile Janus metasurface platform that can directionally control the phase and polarization of terahertz waves by integrating functionalities of half-wave plates, quarter-wave plates, and metallic gratings within a cascaded metasurface structure. As a proof-of-principle, the study experimentally demonstrates Janus metasurfaces capable of independent and simultaneous control over phase and polarization, showcasing propagation direction-encoded focusing and polarization conversion. Moreover, the directionally focused points are utilized with distinct polarization states for advanced applications in direction- and polarization-sensitive detection and imaging. This unique strategy for simultaneous phase and polarization control with direction-dependent versatility opens new avenues for designing ultra-compact devices with significant implications in imaging, encryption, and data storage.

Abstract:Metasurface with simultaneous control of amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic (EM) waves has drawn great attention in modern optics and photonics. However, conventional metasurfaces are mainly designed for single frequency and functionality. Here, we proposed a simple yet powerful methodology for the design of a dual-frequency multifunctional Janus metasurface. The designed transmissive device with sub-wavelength thickness is not only able to achieve completely independent phase modulation at two preset frequencies, but can also realize efficient asymmetric transmission of EM waves. On the other hand, the out-of-plane symmetry breaking also enables the realization of different functions for opposite propagation directions. As a proof of concept, a Janus beam deflector and a Janus metalens with direction- and frequency-controlled functionalities are demonstrated numerically. A dual-frequency Janus metasurface for direction-dependent meta-holograms is validated both numerically and experimentally. Therefore, we believe the proposed metasurfaces with direction- and frequency-dependent versatile functionalities may have great potential in the fields such as polarization manipulation, chiral sensing and information encryption.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for various applications enabled by their strong light manipulation capabilities. Their monolithic designs offer the convenience to incorporate novel natural materials in order to realize advanced electromagnetic (EM) functionalities. Here, based on the usage of the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2). a switchable metasurface that could work at two different working states is proposed. With insulating VO2, we show that helicity-dependent metasurface could be rigorously designed by adopting two phase variables, i.e., initial phase and Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase, which is verified by showing an asymmetric photonic spin Hall effect (APSHE). When VO2 goes into the metallic phase (e.g.. by raising the operating temperature above similar to 341K), the loss factor of the unit cell will be enhanced. and in this case with the assistance of multimode resonances, the metasurface will turn into a perfect broadband circular-polarization-insensitive EM absorber. Based on these, switchable beam splitters and focus-lenses have been designed and discussed in the paper. Abstract:Janus monolayers have long been captivated as a popular notion for breaking in-plane and out-of-plane structural symmetry. Originated from chemistry and materials science, the concept of Janus functions have been recently extended to ultrathin metasurfaces by arranging meta-atoms asymmetrically with respect to the propagation or polarization direction of the incident light. However, such metasurfaces are intrinsically static and the information they carry can be straightforwardly decrypted by scanning the incident light directions and polarization states once the devices are fabricated. In this Letter, we present a dynamic Janus metasurface scheme in the visible spectral region. In each super unit cell, three plasmonic pixels are categorized into two sets. One set contains a magnesium nanorod and a gold nanorod that are orthogonally oriented with respect to each other, working as counter pixels. The other set only contains a magnesium nanorod. The effective pixels on the Janus metasurface can be reversibly regulated by hydrogenation/dehydrogenation of the magnesium nanorods. Such dynamic controllability at visible frequencies allows for flat optical elements with novel functionalities including beam steering, bifocal lensing, holographic encryption, and dual optical function switching.

Abstract:Janus Metasurfaces with Arbitrary Polarization Control The first Janus metasurfaces demonstrate directionally asymmetric orbital angular momentum generation from arbitrary spin. Titania‐based meta‐atoms enable operation in the visible range, extending beyond prior demonstrations in microwave and mid‐infrared regions. Meta‐atoms provide local/global rotation and width control, achieving global directional multifunctionality tailored by the Jones matrix. This multifunctionality in a single‐layer design surpasses previous approaches based on spatial multiplexing or vertical stacking, expanding its applicability across diverse domains. Abstract:Metasurfaces have attracted broad interest thanks to their unprecedented capacity for electromagnetic wavefront manipulation. The compact, ultrathin and multifunctional metasurface calls for novel design principles. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a non-interleaved and non-segmented bidirectional Janus metasurface that encodes multiple functionalities in full-space scattering channels with different propagation directions and polarization in the microwave region. Specifically, by rotating and adjusting the elementary double-arrow-shaped structure within the same meta-atom, the independent phase control can be achieved in both cross-polarized transmission and co-polarized reflection components under oppositely directed incident waves. Our metasurface with broken mirror symmetry can fully exploit four independent information channels under opposite propagation directions. A series of proof-of-concept is constructed to validity of our methodology, and the simulations and experimental results further show that the proposed non-interleaved bidirectional metasurface can provide an attractive platform for various applications, ranging from structured light conversion, optical imaging, multifunctional optical information processing and others.

Abstract:The first Janus metasurfaces convert asymmetric orbital angular momentum directionally from arbitrary spin angular momentum. Titania‐based meta‐atoms enable operation in the visible range. These meta‐atoms also offer local and global rotation, as well as width control, achieving multifunctionality in a single‐layer design, surpassing previous approaches based on spatial multiplexing or vertical stacking. Janus metasurfaces, offering versatile light manipulation contingent on incident direction, are explored across microwave to mid‐infrared spectra. Nonetheless, prior designs often resort to spatial multiplexing or vertical stacking, entailing complex fabrication. Metallic Janus metasurfaces, owing to material properties, suffer notable Ohmic losses in the visible spectrum. In this study, Single‐layer TiO2‐based Janus metasurfaces with arbitrary polarization control is experimentally demonstrated, exhibiting directionally asymmetric functionalities in spin and orbital angular momentum (OAM). A novel Jones matrix formulation tailored for Janus metasurfaces is presented, enabling efficient generation of two asymmetric, high‐purity OAM states of vortex beams at wavelength of 532 nm, contingent on incidence direction. This innovation facilitates compact and versatile phase manipulation, encompassing applications such as lasers and optical combiners, thereby expanding its utility across diverse domains.

Abstract:Dynamic manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves with multiple degrees of freedom plays an essential role in enhancing information processing. Currently, an enormous challenge is to realize directional terahertz (THz) holography. Recently, it was demonstrated that Janus metasurfaces could produce distinct responses to EM waves from two opposite incident directions, making multiplexed dynamic manipulation of THz waves possible. Herein, we show that thermally activated THz Janus metasurfaces integrating with phase change materials on the meta-atoms can produce asymmetric transmission with the designed phase delays. Such reconfigurable Janus metasurfaces can achieve asymmetric focusing of THz wave and directional THz holography with free-space image projections, and particularly the information can be manipulated via temperature and incident THz wave direction. This work not only offers a common strategy for realizing the reconfigurability of Janus metasurfaces, but also shows possible applications in THz optical information encryption, data storage, and smart windows.
Asymmetric Manipulation of Wavefronts Using a Broadband Non-Interleaved Janus Metasurface

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new paradigm to enable asymmetric manipulation of transmitted wavefronts for incidences with distinct propagation directions through a Janus metasurface. The spatial symmetry is broken by controlling propagation phase and geometric phase simultaneously. Full-wave simulations coincide well with theoretically calculated results, showing that independent wave functionalities of twin vortex beams and twin pencil beams are generated for backward and forward left-handed circularly-polarized (LCP) incidence, respectively. Both functionalities maintain significant recognition from 23 to 31 GHz, indicating a broad bandwidth of 29.6%. The proposed concept may find potentials for antenna applications in future wireless and satellite communications.
Metasurfaces with Full Control over Asymmetric Transmission of Light

Abstract:The study of optical systems with asymmetric responses has grown significantly due to their broad application potential in various fields. In particular, Janus metasurfaces are notable for their ability to control light asymmetrically at the pixel level within thin films. However, previous demonstrations were restricted to the partial control of asymmetric transmission for a limited set of input polarizations, focusing primarily on scalar functionalities. Here, we introduce optical metasurfaces consisting of bi-layer silicon nanostructures that can achieve a fully generalized form of asymmetric transmission for any possible input polarization. Their designs owe much to our theoretical model of asymmetric optical transmission in reciprocal systems that explicates the relationship between front- and back-side Jones matrices for general cases, revealing a fundamental correlation between the polarization-direction channels of opposing sides of incidence. To practically circumvent this constraint, we propose a method to partition transmission space, enabling the realization of four distinct vector functionalities within the target volume. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate polarization-direction-multiplexed Janus vector holograms generating four vector holograms. When integrated with computational vector polarizer arrays, this approach facilitates optical encryption with a high level of obscurity. We anticipate that our mathematical framework and novel material systems for generalized asymmetric transmission may pave the way for applications such as optical computations, sensing, and imaging.

Abstract:Janus metasurfaces emerge as a promising platform for implementing multiple wave functionalities by fully exploiting the inherent propagation direction of electromagnetic waves. Their out‐of‐plane asymmetric structures enable different wave functions depending on the propagation direction. Herein, a multiplexed Janus metasurface is proposed, which operates in the microwave region to flexibly manipulate the transmission and reflection wavefronts for same linearly polarized (LP) incidence propagating along the two opposite directions. A meta‐lens is constructed to validate the concept of full‐space shared‐aperture transmission‐reflection‐independent focusing of electromagnetic (EM) waves, exhibiting four distinct focusing performances. Experiments are conducted in the microwave region that agree well with the simulation results. The proposed full‐space Janus metasurface may provide a platform for asymmetric imaging, multichannel information processing, and encrypted communication.

Abstract:A novel direction‐dependent Janus metasurface supported by waveguide structure with the SPP modes is proposed. In −z‐direction, linear‐to‐linear PC can be implemented at the low frequencies, and in the +z‐direction, the ultrawideband absorption takes shape due to the SPP modes, in which strongly localized oscillation of free electrons are confined to the interface assisted by the waveguide structure. In this work, a novel direction‐dependent Janus metasurface (DDJM) supported by waveguide structure (WGS) with surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) modes is proposed. In −z‐direction, linear‐to‐linear (LTL) polarization conversion (PC) can be implemented at the low frequencies by the reflection characteristics of the WGS. And in the +z‐direction, the ultrawideband absorption takes shape due to the SSPP modes, in which strongly localized oscillation of free electrons are confined to the metal–dielectric interface assisted by the WGS. The combination of the WGS and the PC structure finally enables the low‐frequency LTL PC with the high polarization conversion ratio (over 0.9) at 0.87–1.35 THz in −z‐direction, corresponding to the relative bandwidth of 43.24%, as well as the absorption in +z‐direction with an efficiency of over 0.9 in the frequency range of 0.8–1.2 THz. Also the fixed direction‐independent transparent window brought by WGS runs from 1.57 to 1.90 THz when the co‐polarized transmission coefficient exceeds 0.85, occupying a staggered band compared to that of PC or absorption. The favorable properties of the DDJM promise a potential practical application in full‐space electromagnetic wave control and radar stealth technology fields.

Abstract:Steering incident light into specific directions at the nanoscale is very important for future nanophotonics applications of signal transmission and detection. A prerequisite for such a purpose is the development of nanostructures with high-efficiency unidirectional light scattering properties. Here, from both theoretical and experimental sides, we conceived and demonstrated the unidirectional visible light scattering behaviors of a heterostructure, Janus dimer composed of gold and silicon nanospheres. By carefully adjusting the sizes and spacings of the two nanospheres, the Janus dimer can support both electric and magnetic dipole modes with spectral overlaps and comparable strengths. The interference of these two modes gives rise to the narrow-band unidirectional scattering behaviors with enhanced forward scattering and suppressed backward scattering. The directionality can further be improved by arranging the dimers into one-dimensional chain structures. In addition, the dimers also show remarkable electromagnetic field enhancements. These results will be important not only for applications of light emitting devices, solar cells, optical filters, and various surface enhanced spectroscopies but also for furthering our understanding on the light-matter interactions at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Asymmetric Janus materials are of wide‐spread interest due to their unique anisotropic and directional features. In our work, through a simple combination of nanosphere lithography at the solution interface and dopamine chemistry, a new approach for the facile synthesis of large, asymmetric, free‐standing, 2D photonic Janus films with a highly tunable Janus balance and multiple functionalities is developed. Herein we rationally exploit the unique properties (reducibility, self‐adhesive nature, and post‐modification ability) of the polydopamine (PDA) layer and the good deformation and dissolution ability of polystyrene (PS). The precisely controllable chemical compositions on the PDA layer and the multi‐variable morphologies from the PS part offer us a great chance to tune the Janus balance of the film in different dimensions. As a demonstration of the resultant Janus films for potential applications, femtoliter cup arrays are achieved after the removal of PS, which are used for confined crystallization. Good surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement of the Ag‐metallic Janus film is shown, which confirms this excellent platform for creating new functional materials. Our study not only bridges dopamine chemistry with 2D photonic crystals but also opens up new avenues for artificially designed Janus nanoarchitectures with multiple functions.
A Single-Celled Metasurface for Multipolarization Generation and Wavefront Manipulation

Abstract:Due to their unprecedented ability to flexibly manipulate the parameters of light, metasurfaces offer a new approach to integrating multiple functions in a single optical element. In this paper, based on a single-celled metasurface composed of chiral umbrella-shaped metal–insulator–metal (MIM) unit cells, a strategy for simultaneous multiple polarization generation and wavefront shaping is proposed. The unit cells can function as broadband and high-performance polarization-preserving mirrors. In addition, by introducing a chiral-assisted Aharonov–Anandan (AA) geometric phase, the phase profile and phase retardation of two spin-flipped orthogonal circular polarized components can be realized simultaneously and independently with a single-celled metasurface via two irrelevant parameters. Benefiting from this flexible phase manipulation ability, a vectorial hologram generator and metalens array with spatially varying polarizations were demonstrated. This work provides an effective approach to avoid the pixel and efficiency losses caused by the intrinsic symmetry of the PB geometric phase, and it may play an important role in the miniaturization and integration of multipolarization-involved displays, real-time imaging, and spectroscopy systems.

Broadband Janus Scattering from Tilted Dipolar Metagratings

Abstract:Electromagnetic resonances in meta‐atoms have empowered optical interfaces with unprecedented abilities in wavefront manipulation. Despite the versatile applications, energy efficiency and bandwidth improvement are still theoretically constrained by the dispersion feature of resonances in mesoscopic structures. Here, a nontrivial phase modulation mechanism is exposed that breaks the efficiency and bandwidth limit in electric dipolar resonances. By arranging electric dipoles into tilted periodic arrays, the time‐reversed scattering channels are suppressed and dispersionless reflection as well as controllable phase retardation from planar interfaces are achieved. Two types of reflectionless metagratings are demonstrated to support the theoretical prediction. Janus phase retarders show asymmetric phase modulation over a broad spectrum protected by reciprocity. Janus backscattering mirrors retroreflect incident waves for one side while showing transparency in the time‐reversed reflection channel. Experimental measurements validate the concept of broadband Janus scattering at optical axes misalignment interfaces.
Directional Scattering Switching from an All-Dielectric Phase Change Metasurface

Abstract:All-dielectric metasurfaces are a blooming field with a wide range of new applications spanning from enhanced imaging to structural color, holography, planar sensors, and directionality scattering. These devices are nanopatterned structures of sub-wavelength dimensions whose optical behavior (absorption, reflection, and transmission) is determined by the dielectric composition, dimensions, and environment. However, the functionality of these metasurfaces is fixed at the fabrication step by the geometry and optical properties of the dielectric materials, limiting their potential as active reconfigurable devices. Herein, a reconfigurable all-dielectric metasurface based on two high refractive index (HRI) materials like silicon (Si) and the phase-change chalcogenide antimony triselenide (Sb2Se3) for the control of scattered light is proposed. It consists of a 2D array of Si–Sb2Se3–Si sandwich disks embedded in a SiO2 matrix. The tunability of the device is provided through the amorphous-to-crystalline transition of Sb2Se3. We demonstrate that in the Sb2Se3 amorphous state, all the light can be transmitted, as it is verified using the zero-backward condition, while in the crystalline phase most of the light is reflected due to a resonance whose origin is the contribution of the electric (ED) and magnetic (MD) dipoles and the anapole (AP) of the nanodisks. By this configuration, a contrast in transmission (ΔT) of 0.81 at a wavelength of 980 nm by governing the phase of Sb2Se3 can be achieved.

Abstract:Multifunctional electromagnetic (EM) metasurfaces are capable of manipulating electromagnetic waves with kaleidoscopic functions flexibly, which will significantly enhance integration and applications of electronic systems. However, most known design schemes only realize the reflection or transmission functions under a specific angle range, which wastes the other half EM space and restricts wider applications of multifunctional metadevices. Herein, an encouraging strategy of broadband and wide-angle EM wavefronts generator is proposed to produce two independent functions, i.e., antireflections for transverse electric (TE) waves and retroreflection for transverse magnetic (TM) waves, which utilizes band-stop and bandpass responses of the metasurface, respectively. As a feasibility verification of this methodology, a three-layer cascaded metasurface, composed of anisotropic crossbar structures patterned on the two surfaces of a dielectric substrate with sandwiched orthogonal metal-gratings, is designed, fabricated, and measured. Both the simulated and experimental results are in good accordance with theoretical analyses. This full-space metasurface opens up a new route to multifunctional metasurfaces and will further promote engineering applications of metasurfaces.
