Abstract:Coating-induced polarization aberrations of large incident angle are theoretically studied by Jones matrix. The method to reduce the aberrations is proposed through derivation, which is δ=0 and arbitrary incident angle should be appended as two additional optimization goals of optical coating design when the requirements of transmittance are met. Two different anti-reflection coatings which are designed through different optimization goals are compared to further verify the theory. The two anti-reflection coatings represent large and small transmittance and phase difference respectively. Numerical simulation of the two coating induced polarization aberrations is also performed to further verify the theory.
Reduction of Coating Induced Polarization Aberrations by Controlling the Polarization State Variation

Abstract:The mechanism of coating induced polarization state variation is analysed by the Jones matrix. Pauli spin matrices are used to establish the relationship between coating induced polarization state variation and polarization aberrations. To reduce coating induced polarization aberrations, we propose that delta = 0 and T-s = T-p at arbitrary incident angle should be appended as two additional optimization goals of optical coating design when the requirements of transmittance are met. Two typical anti-reflection (AR) coatings are designed and the polarization state variation induced by them is simulated. The MTF (modulation transfer function) calculated by polarization ray tracing is applied to evaluate the polarization aberrations of the practical lithography objective system with the two AR coatings. All the obtained results show that the coating induced polarization aberrations can be reduced by optimizing the angle dependent properties of the optical coating without additional optical elements.

Abstract:The factors affecting the contrast performance of liquid crystal light volve (LCLV) projection system are quantitatively analyzed. A three dimensional mathematic model is built to trace the rays. The effects of wave plates and optical thin films are analyzed based on the theory of Jones matrix and vector optics. The theoretic calculation results of systems with or without wave plates are presented. From these data, it is concluded that wave plates with proper phase changes can greatly improve system contrast.

Abstract:In this work, we establish a three-dimensional (3D) polarization ray-tracing model to trace the evolution of polarization states of incident beams through the corner-cube-like interferometer unit of an orthogonal two-axis Lloyd's mirror interferometer. Compared with the conventional two-dimensional Jones matrix formalism, the 3D polarization ray-tracing model that represents polarization as a three-element electric field vector in the global coordinate system provides an easier approach to trace the polarization evolution. The comparison between the simulated and experimental interference fringes obtained under different combinations of initial polarization states of incident beams verify the feasibility of the established model.

Abstract:We demonstrate a wavelength-dependent spatial lateral beam shift of a reflective Gaussian beam on the surface of multilayer thin-film coatings. Numerical analysis of the behavior of a Gaussian-form light beam incident on the surface of the coatings is performed. The theoretical analysis is for a two-dimensional light sheet. The spatial lateral beam dispersion can be determined rigorously from the numerical wave field in the region of the incident medium. The coatings present a spatial dispersion effect much larger than in previous reports. The thin-film coatings can act not only as positive spatial dispersion devices but in a proper case, also as negative spatial dispersion devices. As such, the devices produce a wavelength-dependent negative lateral shift of the reflective beam. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:In reflective liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) or LCOS light valve large screen projection display system, Philips color separation and color recombination prism system is widely used to make the projection system compact. There are two factors which influence the contrast of projection optical systems. One is the extinction ratio of Polarizing beam splitter (PBS) and the other is the dark-state output of Philips prism system because of geometrical polarization rotations. Optical thin films exhibit inevitable polarization effects at oblique incidence. Here, Geometrical polarization rotation is analyzed in detail. The factors affecting the contrast performance of Philips prism system are quantitatively analyzed. Polarization aberration in this display system is analyzed based on the theory of Jones polarization ray tracing. It can be conclude that the contrast of projection display system is intimately correlated with phase shift difference of the two polarization component. It is concluded that optical design should combine lens design and coating design to improve the contrast and image quality of the projection display system.

Abstract:The incident angles of the optical systems with high numerical apertures, such as lithography or microscope, are larger than those of normal ones. For these systems, polarized illumination is widely adopted. The coatings on their surfaces will make s and p polarization components of oblique incident light experience diverse amplitudes and phase modulations, and induce extra polarization aberrations. We apply the vectorial diffraction theory to assess the effects of coating-induced polarization aberrations on the focusing properties of these systems. By applying the generalized Debye integral, the relationship between the parameters of coating and electric field vector near the focal spot is established. Considering x linearly polarized light as the incident light field, we evaluate the potential influence of the coatings on the intensity and the full width at half maxium of focal spots. In the further discussion, we compare the results of different coatings when the various optimization goals are set, and certify that the phase difference caused by coating has more effect on focusing property. Based on this, the additional constraint conditions of coating design are proposed to suppress such disturbance, i.e. to properly increase relative weight of phase constraint conditions. With this proposed constraint conditions, we design and optimize an anti-reflection coating with low polarization aberrations. By applying this designing, the central intensity of focal spot can be enhanced by 12.5%, and the light energy utilization will be improved effectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a comprehensive model for polarization errors in sensors based on Michelson interferometers. An analytical model of polarization error is derived using the Jones matrix method and optical path tracing methodology. The findings demonstrate that the non-reciprocity of the cross-coupling waves, stemming from variations in the polarization cross-coupling positions between the upper and lower interferometer arms in the Michelson interferometer, is the source of polarization error. This non-reciprocity gives rise to amplitude-type error and intensity-type error in the interferometer, both of which can be mitigated by increasing the extinction ratio of the polarizer and reducing the polarization cross-coupling in the optical path. Moreover, employing a light source with low degree of polarization reduces the correlation between orthogonal polarization states, effectively reducing amplitude-type error. When the extinction ratio of the polarizer is limited and the polarization cross-coupling in the optical path is challenging to control, this method proves effective in suppressing amplitude-type error, which is a dominant factor of polarization error, thus enhancing the performance of the sensor. The analysis presented in this paper provides theoretical support for the fabrication and application of Michelson interferometer sensors and holds significant importance for improving sensors’ performance.

Abstract:Polarization control is of vital importance in two-axis Lloyd's mirror interference lithography to achieve the preferred interference fringes. In this work, we first establish a three-dimensional polarization ray-tracing model to trace the evolution of polarization states of incident beams through the corner-cube-like interferometer unit of an orthogonal two-axis Lloyd's mirror interferometer. With the established model, we then derive the optimal combination of initial polarization directions of the incident beams according to the orthogonality of polarization states and the contrast of interference fringes. The comparison between the simulated and experimental interference fringes obtained under different combinations of initial polarization states of incident beams verify the feasibility of the established model and the achieved optimal polarization modulation.

The Jones transformation matrix representing a round trip of the ray in the laser cavity has been obtained. The properties of self-reproduction of polarization mode have been proved. The variation regulation of polarization loss with the incidence angle to the end face of the laser medium was discussed, and the calculation results were presented.

Abstract:A receiving telescope is an indispensable component in an atmospheric remote sensing polarization lidar. In order to achieve accurate atmospheric depolarization measurements, it is necessary to study the polarization properties of receiving telescopes, which are embodied by their Mueller matrices. In this paper, the Mueller matrices of receiving telescopes are obtained by ray tracing with space vectors. The relationship between the measurement errors of the atmospheric depolarization parameter and the elements of the Mueller matrix of receiving telescopes is derived. The polarization properties of receiving telescopes in terms of orientation, field of view, and F number are analyzed, respectively. By comparing two common receiving telescopes in linear and circular polarization lidars, it is found that the measurement errors caused by the Newton telescopes in circular polarization lidars are significantly greater than those in linear polarization lidars, while the performances of the Cassegrain telescopes in the two lidars are almost identical. What is more, the measurement errors caused by the Cassegrain telescopes are much less than the counterparts caused by the Newton telescopes. According to the comparison results, the optimal telescopes are respectively presented for polarization lidars working in different polarization states and laser wavelengths.

Abstract:Unique effects of the double helical conductances of the surfaces (HCS) on the Mueller matrix (Mm) of a two-layer eccentrically bianisotropic cylinder linear array are investigated in this paper. The mathematical treatment is conducted based on the boundary-value approach combined with the technique of generalized separation variables. Both the TMz- and TEz-polarization of the obliquely incident waves are taken into account in the analysis. To gain insight into some physical mechanisms, numerical examples are presented to show the influences of the variations of the twist angles on the behavior of Mm of a linear array of four bianisotropic cylinders. Correspondingly, various magnetic symmetry groups (such as D∞(C∞), C∞v(C∞), D∞h(D∞), C∞h(C∞)) and some generalized symmetry and anti-symmetry relations, which govern all the elements of Mm or the scattering cross section under special chiral operations, are demonstrated. The present studies can be exploited to identify the constitutive characteristics of some bianisotropic media and to provide better understanding of the electromagnetic wave interaction with bianisotropic cylindrical objects with complex boundaries.

Abstract:Dynamic measurement of the Jones matrix is crucial in investigating polarization light fields, which have wide applications in biophysics, chemistry, and mineralogy. However, acquiring the four elements of the Jones matrix instantly is difficult, hindering the characterization of random media and transient processes. In this study, we propose a single-shot measurement method of the Jones matrix for anisotropic media called "four-channel digital polarization holography" (FC-DPH). The FC-DPH system is created by a slightly off-axis superposition of reference light waves, which are modulated by a spatial light modulator (SLM), and signal light waves that pass through a Ronchi grating. The SLM enables flexible adjustment of the spatial carrier frequency, which can be adapted to different anisotropic media. The four elements of the Jones matrix can be obtained from the interferogram through the inverse Fourier transform. Optical experiments on anisotropic objects validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:The polarization state of light is somewhat affected by propagation in a broad-spectrum, high numerical aperture (NA) and other optical systems with oblique incident angles. Changes in the polarization state, known as polarization aberrations, may result in severe deterioration of the imaging quality. This paper reviews the theory of polarization aberration, including the definition of polarization aberration, polarization ray tracing, analysis of the function of polarization aberration, and some new theories related to calculation and analysis procedures. Increasingly, the theory of polarization aberration has been analyzed and applied in optical systems such as interferometers, microscopes, telescopes, and lithography devices. In optical design, the combined calculation and simulation of a polarization aberration can contribute to the efficient optimization of optical system performance.

Abstract:By accurately solving the eigenvalue equation of waveguides, the characteristics of TM model changes with the buffer layer parameters in the metal-clad four-layer optical waveguide were analyzed for the optical waveguide polarizers. The model resonant point existing in it was pointed out, and based on the characteristic of the resonant point, the principle of the optimal design of the metal-clad optical waveguide polarizers was given. Finally, the significance of using GaAs/GaAlAs material to fabricate the polarizer was also discussed.

Abstract:The importance of polarization aberrations has been recognized and studied in numerous optical systems and related applications. It is known that polarization aberrations are particularly crucial in certain photogrammetry and microscopy techniques that are related to vectorial information—such as polarization imaging, stimulated emission depletion microscopy, and structured illumination microscopy. Hence, a reduction in polarization aberrations would be beneficial to different types of optical imaging/sensing techniques with enhanced vectorial information. In this work, we first analyzed the intrinsic polarization aberrations induced by a high-NA lens theoretically and experimentally. The aberrations of depolarization, diattenuation, and linear retardance were studied in detail using the Mueller matrix polar-decomposition method. Based on an analysis of the results, we proposed strategies to compensate the polarization aberrations induced by high-NA lenses for hardware-based solutions. The preliminary imaging results obtained using a Mueller matrix polarimeter equipped with multiple coated aspheric lenses for polarization-aberration reduction confirmed that the conclusions and strategies proposed in this study had the potential to provide more precise polarization information of the targets for applications spanning across classical optics, remote sensing, biomedical imaging, photogrammetry, and vectorial optical-information extraction.

Abstract:Laser tracking and measuring system is made for real-time measurement of dynamic target in industry field and it can be made up into computer integral system with both measuring and controlling capacity. The system has no objective reference coordinate system, during the measurement, its coordinate frame is not fixed, so we call this coordinate system as Virtual Coordinate System. Laser tracking system involves interdisciplinary knowledge, such as laser dynamic aiming technique, laser interferometry, optical system and precision mechanism design, motor controller design and modern numerical computation. This paper mainly focuses: on the optical system analysis and design. The system, which can track: and measure the dynamic target, uses the dual-frequency laser interferometer as the light source and length-measured sensor simultaneously. The interferometer produces linear-polarized orthogonal beam with two different frequencies. When the beam passes through the optical system, it's polarization and amplitude will be both changed. This paper presents vector analysis method for the optical tracking system and analyzes the polarization effect of the optical system on the light beam incident in any direction by Jones matrix analysis. On the basis of analytical and experimental results, the optical scheme is optimized in order to improve the tracking and measuring performance of the whole system.

Coparison of extended jones matrices for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays at oblique angles of incidence

Abstract:Detailed formulas were derived using Yeh's formulation of the extended 2×2 Jones matrix and applied to twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) at oblique angles of incidence. Numerical comparisons of this extended Jones matrix method with the exact 4×4 Berreman matrix and with the extended Jones matrix of Lien are presented. The different extended Jones matrix formulations differ in their approach to boundary conditions matching between the model birefringent layers. We show that the Yeh's version is a more accurate approximations to the full 4×4 matrix. This extended Jones matrix method is fast, direct and simple. It is also physically more intuitive.

Abstract:Polarization state of only completely polarized light can be analyzed by some software, ZEMAX for example. Based on principles of geometrical optics, novel descriptions of the light with different polarization state are provided in this paper. Differential calculus is well used for saving the polarization state and amplitudes of sampling rays when ray tracing. The polarization state changes are analyzed in terms of several typical circumstances, such as Brewster incidence, total reflection. Natural light and partially polarized light are discussed as an important aspect. Further more, a computing method including composition and decomposition of sampling rays at each surface is also set up to analyze the energy transmission of the rays for optical systems. Adopting these analysis methods mentioned, not only the polarization state changes of the incident rays can be obtained, but also the energy distributions can be calculated. Since the energy distributions are obtained, the surface with the most energy loss will be found in the optical system. The energy value and polarization state of light reaching the image surface will also be available. These analysis methods are very helpful for designing or analyzing optical systems, such as analyzing the energy of stray light in high power optical systems, researching the influences of optical surfaces to rays' polarization state in polarization imaging systems and so on.
