Abstract:Full power operation of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) has been delayed and will now begin in 2035. Delays to the ITER schedule may affect the availability of tritium for subsequent fusion devices, as the global CANDU-type fission reactor fleet begins to phase out over the coming decades. This study provides an up to date account of future tritium availability by incorporating recent uncertainties over the life extension of the global CANDU fleet, as well as considering the potential impact of tritium demand by other fusion efforts. Despite the delays, our projections suggest that CANDU tritium remains sufficient to support the full operation of ITER. However, whether there is tritium available for a DEMO reactor following ITER is largely uncertain, and is subject to numerous uncontrollable externalities. Further tritium demand may come from any number of private sector “compact fusion” start-ups which have emerged in recent years, all of which aim to accelerate the development of fusion energy. If the associated technical challenges can be overcome, compact fusion programmes have the opportunity to use tritium over the next two decades whilst it is readily available, and before full power DT operation on ITER starts in 2035. Assuming a similar level of performance is achievable, a compact fusion development programme, using smaller reactors operating at lower fusion power, would require smaller quantities of tritium than the ITER programme, leaving sufficient tritium available for multiple concepts to be developed concurrently. The development of concurrent fusion concepts increases the chances of success, as it spreads the risk of failure. Additionally, if full tritium breeding capability is not expected to be demonstrated in DEMO until after 2050, an opportunity exists for compact fusion programmes to incorporate tritium breeding technology in nearer-term devices. DD start-up, which avoids the need for external tritium for reactor start-up, is dependent upon full tritium breeding capability, and may be essential for large-scale commercial roll-out of fusion energy. As such, from the standpoint of availability and use of external tritium, a compact route to fusion energy may be more advantageous, as it avoids longer-term complications and uncertainties in the future supply of tritium.

Abstract:The final phase of the feasibility demonstration of fusion, namely the construction and operation of ITER, will require a large and prolonged effort and strong determination by all parties involved. The time is therefore appropriate to revisit the motivations in support of fusion development. The supply of energy would become an issue today if due consideration were given not only to the limits `internal' to the energy systems but also to those `external', to it. The first ones are not so stringent because reserves in particular of fossil fuels are ample, but the second ones are very stringent because of the limited capability of self-regeneration of the environment. Energy consumption is anticipated to triple in the next 50 years and if the share among the sources remains as of now the risk of a major climate change due to the release of CO2 from burning of fossil fuels, with catastrophic consequences on the environment, is high. The development of sources with better compatibility with the environment and acceptable to society, such as fusion, as well as of more efficient energy technologies, should be pursued with a great determination. The potential of fusion as an energy source could be demonstrated in all of its main aspects by carrying out the ITER programme.

Abstract:Fusion energy is often regarded as a long-term solution to the world's energy needs. However, even after solving the critical research challenges, engineering and materials science will still impose significant constraints on the characteristics of a fusion power plant. Meanwhile, the global energy grid must transition to low-carbon sources by 2050 to prevent the worst effects of climate change. We review three factors affecting fusion's future trajectory: (1) the significant drop in the price of renewable energy, (2) the intermittency of renewable sources and implications for future energy grids, and (3) the recent proposition of intermediate-level nuclear waste as a product of fusion. Within the scenario assumed by our premises, we find that while there remains a clear motivation to develop fusion power plants, this motivation is likely weakened by the time they become available. We also conclude that most current fusion reactor designs do not take these factors into account and, to increase market penetration, fusion research should consider relaxed nuclear waste design criteria, raw material availability constraints and load-following designs with pulsed operation.

Abstract:Among the possible future options for steady (baseload) electricity generation is nuclear fusion. Fusion has a number of attractive properties, particularly in terms of resource availability, generation of waste and emissions, and low external costs, but has consistently proven to be technically challenging. Even the most well-developed current research programs do not lead to commercial fusion energy being widely available before the end of the century, meaning it is a long-term low-carbon solution not a near-term fix for current climate change issues. This chapter aims to lay out the basis for fusion's claim to being part of a future energy system; the main routes and concepts toward delivering fusion power; problems remaining to be solved; and how fusion might contribute to a future energy market.

Abstract:Fusion energy is at an important inflection point in its development: multiple government agencies and private companies are now planning fusion pilot plants to deliver electricity to the grid in the next decade. However, realizing fusion as a technically and economically viable energy source depends on developing and qualifying materials that can withstand the extreme environment inside a fusion power plant. This Perspective seeks to engage the broader materials science community in this long-term effort. We first outline the principal materials challenges and research opportunities for fusion. Next, we argue that fusion is distinct from other energy applications with respect to materials, not just in the magnitude and complexity of the technical challenges but also in the present level of uncertainty in materials design requirements. To address this, we finally propose a research framework based on an iterative co-evolution of materials science and fusion power plant design requirements.

Abstract:The successful realisation of energy production through the fusion of deuterium and tritium will necessarily lead to the generation of waste contaminated with tritium. Not only will some of the tritium fuel permeate into components of fusion reactors and their wider fuel cycle, but tritium will also be generated directly in materials exposed to the high neutron fluxes via nuclear break-up reactions. Motivated by predictions from fuel-retention modelling and nuclear transmutation simulations, which demonstrate the potential scale of the tritium contamination challenge, UKAEA is exploring different solutions for detritiation, including acid etching/dissolution and thermal (melt) treatments, leveraging the experience gained from handling the waste materials generated during the operation of JET. The high mobility of tritium poses a challenge for waste storage and containment. Knowledge of how tritium permeates through different materials under different conditions is critical for ensuring the environmental safety and regulatory compliance in the design and operation of waste-disposal containers, waste storage units and waste transportation systems. A low-temperature permeation rig has been designed and commissioned to measure the permeation of tritium at low temperatures through different materials; primarily investigating candidate materials for waste boxes, but which could also be deployed for tritium containment in low temperature regions of a fusion power plant, such as on the walls of a reactor hall. The experience of establishing and operating experimental tritium rigs and handling tritiated waste from JET is invaluable for the future fusion industry, while there is optimism that the experimental research trials will steer fusion waste strategy by designing waste containers and barriers that minimise the spread of tritium contamination or provide efficient detritiation solutions.

Abstract:This article objectively discusses the potential of development of nuclear fusion as a profitable energy source for the society of the future. After a brief exposition treating the physical foundations on which nuclear fusion is based – that are known for a century -, attention is drawn to the formidable difficulties that have been encountered when trying its practical implementation in a controlled device, and to the different proposals for reactors which have been conceived with the aim of overcoming them and demonstrate its scientific-technical feasibility. Information is provided regarding the most relevant (public and private) projects that are currently being developed in this field, which exhibits a situation characterized by the strong irruption of private initiative in recent years, and by diversification in terms of concepts and reactor designs, without it being clear at the moment which solution will prevail in the commercial stage, or whether the path to that goal will be completed by several models that will coexist. It is estimated that, in the most optimistic case and thanks to the impetus given by private initiative, the first commercial fusion energy plants could be available in the 2040s, making it plausible that public-private collaboration mechanisms will proliferate. The enormous advantages that this resource would bring to society are pointed, taking account of its virtues as a clean, safe, almost unlimited and cheap energy. This article will be continued by another devoted to exploring the economic viability of fusion technology, assuming the high level of uncertainty associated with both the vagueness of the details in the design and operation of the plants, as well as the lack of knowledge in the energy environment, economic and social in the coming years. Abstract:Fusion energy is a promising, safe, and reliable green energy solution to the increasing energy demand. However, there are several materials challenges that need to be overcome to increase the technical readiness to a level that enables a fusion pilot plant on the grid. This focus issue aims to identify and address a set of such key impediments for realizing deuterium-tritium (D–T) fusion power in a tokamak reactor and highlight the most recent progress on those research frontiers. The main emphasis of this collection is on materials development challenges resulting from helium irradiation, neutron-induced degradation, thermomechanical loading, and the corrosive environment faced by the divertor and first-wall materials, commonly known as plasma-facing components, and blanket systems for tokamak fusion reactors.

Abstract:This carefully researched book presents facts and arguments showing, beyond a doubt, that nuclear fusion power will not be technically feasible in time to satisfy the world's urgent need for climate-neutral energy. The author describes the 70-year history of nuclear fusion; the vain attempts to construct an energy-generating nuclear fusion power reactor, and shows that even in the most optimistic scenario nuclear fusion, in spite of the claims of its proponents, will not be able to make a sizable contribution to the energy mix in this century, whatever the outcome of ITER. This implies that fusion power will not be a factor in combating climate change, and that the race to save the climate with carbon-free energy will have been won or lost long before the first nuclear fusion power station comes on line. Aimed at the general public as well as those whose decisions directly affect energy policy, this book will be a valuable resource for informing future debates.

Abstract:There has been some good news, and some bad news in the controlled fusion community recently. The good news is that the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has recently produced a burning plasma. It succeeded on several of its shots where ~1.5-2 megajoules from its laser (National Ignition Facility, or NIF) has generated ~ 1.3-3 megajoules of fusion products. The highest ratio of fusion energy to laser energy it achieved, defined as its Q, was 1.5 at the time of this writing. While LLNL is sponsored by nuclear stockpile stewardship, this author sees a likely path from their result to fusion for energy for the world, a path using a very different laser and a very different target configuration. The bad news is that the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER) has continued to stumble on more and more delays and cost overruns, as its capital cost has mushroomed from ~$5 billion to ~ $25B. This paper argues that the American fusion effort, for energy for the civilian economy, should switch its emphasis not only from magnetic fusion to inertial fusion but should also take much more seriously fusion breeding. Over the next few decades, the world might well be setting up more and more thermal nuclear reactors, and these might need fuel which only fusion breeders can supply. In other words, fusion should begin to color outside the lines.

Abstract:If fusion power reactors are to be feasible, it will still be necessary to convert the energy of the nuclear reaction into usable form. The heat produced will be removed from the reactor core by a primary coolant, which might be water, helium, molten lithium-lead, molten lithium-containing salt, or CO2. The heat could then be transferred to a conventional Rankine cycle or Brayton (gas turbine) cycle. Alternatively it could be used for thermochemical processes such as producing hydrogen or other transport fuels. Fusion presents new problems because of the high energy neutrons released. These affect the selection of materials and the operating temperature, ultimately determining the choice of coolant and working cycle. The limited temperature ranges allowed by present day irradiated structural materials, combined with the large internal power demand of the plant, will limit the overall thermal efficiency. The operating conditions of the fusion power source, the materials, coolant, and energy conversion system will all need to be closely integrated.

Tritium-Lean Fusion Power Plants with Asymmetric Deuterium-Tritium Transport and Pumping

Abstract:Asymmetries in deuterium-tritium (D-T) particle transport and divertor pumping speeds are shown to enhance tritium self-sufficiency in fusion power plants. Using a diffusive particle transport model that links the plasma core, separatrix, and divertor regions, it is shown that reducing tritium transport while increasing deuterium transport improves both tritium burn efficiency and overall fusion power. By selectively increasing deuterium transport, tritium burn efficiency can be further optimized, assuming the availability of asymmetric D-T fueling and advanced divertor technologies. These asymmetries become especially beneficial at high tritium burn efficiencies. In one example, by increasing the D-T particle diffusivity ratio and decreasing the D-T divertor pump speed ratio, each by a factor of five, the tritium burn efficiency increases eleven-fold from 0.026 to 0.29 at fixed fusion power. We propose a novel approach to achieve asymmetric D-T pumping with a divertor re-injection system utilizing a partial ionization plasma centrifuge. In an ARC-class power plant, this approach could yield an order-of-magnitude improvement in tritium burn efficiency. These findings motivate the development of techniques and technologies to reduce core tritium transport and increase tritium divertor pumping speeds.

Abstract:Small particles (dust) exist in magnetic confinement fusion devices. Their origin is due to plasma–surface interactions. Dust particles may contain significant amounts of hydrogen isotopes, 50% of which will be tritium in future devices. It is important to assess and understand the processes by which dust is formed and by which it interacts with the fusion device and its plasma. Dust may be a safety hazard due to its high chemical reactivity and due to the mobile tritium inventory. Dust may influence the plasma performance and the operation of fusion devices. The radioactive decay of tritium incorporated into carbonaceous dust may lead to its charging and to the formation of a nuclear induced plasma associated with levitation and transport of dust inside the vacuum vessel. Some important aspects of dust in fusion devices will be discussed, making use of information from the area of plasma–surface interactions in fusion devices and from the field of dusty plasma research.

Abstract:Providing stable and clean energy sources is a necessity for the increasing demands of humanity. Energy produced by fusion reactions, in particular in tokamaks, is a promising path towards that goal. However, there is little experience with plasmas under conditions close to those expected in future fusion reactors, because it requires the fusion of Deuterium (D) and Tritium (T), while most of the experiments are currently performed in pure D. After more than 20 years, the Joint European Torus (JET) has carried out new D-T experiments with the aim of exploring the unique characteristics of burning D-T plasmas, such as the presence of highly energetic ions. A new stable, high confinement and impurity-free D-T regime, with strong reduction of energy losses with respect to D, has been found. Multiscale physics mechanisms critically determine the thermal confinement and the fusion power yield. These crucial achievements importantly contribute to the establishment of fusion energy generation as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Abstract:Fusion energy, the process that uses the same reaction that powers the sun and the stars, offers the promise of virtually unlimited, carbon-free energy and is approaching reality. Recently, there's been a dramatic global increase in the investment and research focused on addressing the hurdles to commercialize fusion energy. While a majority of the effort has been focused on gaps in technology, little work has been done to address the societal and environmental impacts of this technology. Three community- and environmentally-focused research priorities are identified for commercializing fusion energy: 1) understanding the environmental impacts of fusion energy across the technology lifecycle, 2) developing risk and safety assessment methodologies for fusion power plant technologies, and 3) creating a community-based socially engaged approach for fusion technology design and development. This approach will benefit private companies who wish to deploy future fusion power plants as concerns about the technology will be addressed early in the design process, thus minimizing delays in deployment that may result in increased costs for developers. Community engagement around fusion technology development must be evidence-based in order to build trust between communities and technology developers. Such an approach is grounded in informed consent is vital for the sustainable development and use of fusion technologies.

Abstract:Fusion materials research started in the early 1970s following the observation of the degradation of irradiated materials used in the first commercial fission reactors. The technological challenges of fusion energy are intimately linked with the availability of suitable materials capable of reliably withstanding the extremely severe operational conditions of fusion reactors. Although fission and fusion materials exhibit common features, fusion materials research is broader. The harder mono-energetic spectrum associated with the deuterium–tritium fusion neutrons (14.1 MeV compared to <2 MeV on average for fission neutrons) releases significant amounts of hydrogen and helium as transmutation products that might lead to a (at present undetermined) degradation of structural materials after a few years of operation. Overcoming the historical lack of a fusion-relevant neutron source for materials testing is an essential pending step in fusion roadmaps. Structural materials development, together with research on functional materials capable of sustaining unprecedented power densities during plasma operation in a fusion reactor, have been the subject of decades of worldwide research efforts underpinning the present maturity of the fusion materials research programme.
