Abstract:The reversibly cross-linked rubber based on reversible covalent bonds is a promising route to realize the recycling of rubber. As a new telechelic liquid rubber, the primary amine-terminated cis-polybutadiene (AmTPB) was first chain-extended by terephthalaldehyde and then cross-linked by tris(2-aminoethyl)amine to prepare the reversibly cross-linked rubber (AmTPB-TA-TAA) based on imine bonds in one pot. It has been confirmed that the mechanical and thermal properties could be controlled by changing the molecular weight of AmTPB and the degree of chain extension. AmTPB-TA-TAA had the characteristics of recyclability and self-healing at high temperature due to the exchange reaction of imine bonds.

Abstract:Abstract Closed-loop chemical recycling provides a solution to the end-of-use problem of synthetic polymers. However, it remains a major challenge to design dynamic bonds, capable of effective bonding and reversible cleaving, for preparing chemically recyclable cross-linked polymers. Herein, we report a dynamic maleic acid tertiary amide bond based upon reversible amidation reaction between maleic anhydrides and secondary amines. This dynamic bond allows for the construction of polymer networks with tailorable and robust mechanical properties, covering strong elastomers with a tensile strength of 22.3 MPa and rigid plastics with a yield strength of 38.3 MPa. Impressively, these robust polymeric materials can be completely depolymerized in an acidic aqueous solution at ambient temperature, leading to efficient monomer recovery with >94% separation yields. Meanwhile, the recovered monomers can be used to remanufacture cross-linked polymeric materials without losing their original mechanical performance. This work unveils a general approach to design polymer networks with tunable mechanical performance and closed-loop recyclability, which will open a new avenue for sustainable polymeric materials.

Here, we present a multicatalytic route that allows the degradation of nitrile-butadiene rubber, cross-metathesis of the formed oligomers, and polymerization of the resulting dicarboxylic acids with bio-based diols, providing direct access to unsaturated polyesters. This one-pot approach combines the use of commercially available catalysts that are active and selective under mild conditions to synthesize renewable copolymers without the need to isolate intermediates.

Abstract:Cross-linked acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR)/poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) blends are extensively served as commercial insulation foams. However, methods to reclaim the wasted NBR/PVC composites are usually inappropriate, causing severe pollution. Herein, we reported that the waste NBR/PVC composites powders (WNPP) with high thermal stability and degree of reclaiming were prepared by solid-state shear milling technology (S3M). Furthermore, the reclaimed products via thermoplastic re-processing had excellent mechanical properties, and the optimal stress and strain were increased by 208.2 % and 269.4 %, respectively, compared with the products made from virgin scraps. Through the investigation of each sample's molecular chains and thermal properties, it was found that when the cross-linked polar rubber-plastic composites are reclaimed, the molecular chains of the rubber phase would be close to each other. The interaction among polar groups would be enhanced, which is the main contributing factor limiting the movability of the polymer chains. And the interaction between the polar rubber and plastic phases would also increase, which is beneficial for the compatibility of the two phases. Moreover, there is a phase separation between the de-crosslinked continuous phase and the residual cross-linked network region for the re-processing products.

Abstract:To cope with the severe plastic waste crisis, massive efforts are made to develop sustainable polymer materials whose degradation involves a disposing and decomposing to small molecule (DDM) and/or a chemical recycling to monomer (CRM) process. Polyacetals, a type of pH-responsive polymers, are degradable under acidic conditions, while highly stable under neutral and basic circumstances. As for their synthesis, the cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of cyclic acetals is an elegant and promising approach, though suffering from fatal side reactions and polymerization-depolymerization equilibrium. Recent development in CRM restimulates the interest in the long-forgotten CROP method due to its inherent depolymerization characteristics. In terms of the end-of-life options, polyacetals are recyclable materials with both DDM and CRM potentials. They not only expand the scope of materials for closed-loop recycling but also help to tune the degradation properties of traditional polyesters and polyolefins. This review aims to discuss the synthesis of various polyacetals by CROP and their degradation properties from the perspectives of 1) polymerization of cyclic acetals, dioxepins, and hemiacetal esters, 2) copolymerization of cyclic acetals with heterocyclic or vinyl monomers, and 3) degradation and recycling properties of the related polymers.

Abstract:Waste plastics are serious environmental threats due to their low degradability and low recycling rate. Rapid and efficient waste plastics recycling technologies are urgently demanded for a sustainable future. Herein, we report a rapid, closed-loop, and streamlined process to convert polyesters such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) back to its purified monomers. Using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid or metal triflates as the recyclable catalyst, polyesters such as PET can be completely depolymerized by simple carboxylic acids within 1 h. By coupling this acidolysis with a subsequent hydrogenolysis process, the consumed carboxylic acid was recovered and the closed-loop of PET depolymerization could be established. All catalysts and depolymerization agents are fully recycled while only PET and hydrogen are consumed.

Abstract:Thermoset plastics, highly desired for their stability, durability, and chemical resistance, are currently consumed over 60 million tons annually across the globe, but they are difficult to recycle due to their crosslinked structures. The development of recyclable thermoset plastics is an important but challenging task. Here, we prepare recyclable thermoset plastics by crosslinking a commodity polymer, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), with a small percentage of a Ru complex via nitrile‐Ru coordination. PAN is obtained from industry and the Ru complex is synthesized in one step, which enables the production of recyclable thermoset plastics in an efficient way. Additionally, the thermoset plastics exhibit impressive mechanical performance, boasting a Young's modulus of 6.3 GPa and a tensile strength of 109.8 MPa. Moreover, they can be decrosslinked when exposed to both light and a solvent, and can then be re‐crosslinked upon heating. This reversible crosslinking mechanism enables the recycling of thermosets from a mixture of plastic waste. We also demonstrate the preparation of recyclable thermosets from other commodity polymers such as SAN resins and polymer composites through reversible crosslinking. This study shows reversible crosslinking via metal‐ligand coordination is a new strategy for designing recyclable thermosets using commodity polymers. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:While valued for their durability and exceptional performance, crosslinked thermosets are challenging to recycle and reuse. Here, we unveil inherent reprocessability in industrially relevant polyolefin thermosets. Unlike prior methods, our approach eliminates the need to introduce exchangeable functionality to regenerate the material, relying instead on preserving the activity of the metathesis catalyst employed in the curing reaction. Frontal ring opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) proves critical to preserving this activity. We explore conditions controlling catalytic viability to successfully reclaim performance across multiple generations of material, thus demonstrating long‐term reprocessability. This straightforward and scalable remolding strategy is poised for widespread adoption. Given the anticipated growth in polyolefin thermosets, our findings represent an important conceptual advance in the pursuit of a fully circular lifecycle for thermoset polymers This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This work proposes a mechanochemical recycling strategy for highly cross‐linked thermosets via the synergy of mechanics and chemistry, which is economic‐friendly and pollution‐free. The findings indicate that the recycled thermosets demonstrate a remarkable recovery, as evidenced by the restoration of their Young's modulus, ultimate strength, peak strain, impact and bending properties, reaching ≈100% of the values observed in the as‐synthesized thermosets. Highly cross‐linked thermosets possess superior mechanical properties and have found broad applications in engineering. However, due to the dense cross‐links, it is extremely challenging to recycle highly cross‐linked thermosets, causing serious environmental and sustainable concerns. Herein, a mechanochemical recycling strategy is proposed for highly cross‐linked thermosets via the synergy of mechanics and chemistry, which is economic‐friendly and pollution‐free. To demonstrate the strategy, diverse metal‐complex catalysts are employed to recycle highly cross‐linked epoxy incorporated with switchable covalent bonds at certain pressure, temperature, and time. The effect of each catalyst on the efficiency of recycling is evaluated, which follows a descending order: Zr4+ > Mn3+ > Co3+ > Fe3+ > Co2+ > Zn2+ > OTi4+ > Ni2+. The results show that the mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus, ultimate strength, peak strain, impact strength, flexural modulus and strength, as well as thermal stability of the recycled samples are almost identical to those of as‐synthesized ones. The effectiveness of the method is further confirmed via micromorphology.

Abstract:Current adopted rubber curing methods undergo large amounts of environmental issues, such as the release of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during curing process and difficulties in recycling of end-of-life rubbers. Many new curing reactions and cross-linking structures have been developed to solve these problems. A green curing strategy based on epoxy-acid reactions and ester linkages could be a potential alternative to the current curing ones. However, the curing reactions between epoxy and carboxyl groups generally require a catalysis to improve curing rate, and the recycling process requires toxic organic solution or high temperature. It is of great desired to develop a real environmentally friendly crosslinking strategy for rubber materials. In this paper, we report a facile and high-efficiency green crosslinking strategy for the carboxyl-functionalized rubber. N,N,N′,N'-tetraglycidyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) was selected as a multifunctional amine-type high-efficiency crosslinker for carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR). TGDDM-cured XNBR exhibit extremely fast crosslinking rate and high crosslinking efficiency due to the four epoxy terminated units and tertiary amine structure acting as an internal catalyst. Besides, the mechanical properties and crosslinking density of TGDDM-cured XNBR can be regulated by TGDDM content. Furthermore, the ester linkage formed by curing reaction could be selectively and efficiently cleaved in a mixed solution of ethanol and water under mild condition. The closed-loop recovered XNBR maintains chemical structure and molecular weight and exhibit good mechanical performance. This strategy offers a promising way for high-efficient crosslinking of diene rubber as well as a real cost-effective and environmentally friendly recovery of end-of-life rubber materials.

Abstract:The current challenge of recycling rubber articles beyond the failure time has created an increasingly huge burden on the environment. Therefore, there is a growing focus on enhancing the environmental resistance and reprocessability of rubber materials. In this work, we present a simple way to introduce the fluorinated short‐side chains on the molecular chains of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) via the reaction of epoxy groups and carboxyl groups. The results indicated that the short fluorinated side chains endowed ENR the excellent environmental resistance such as thermal stability, thermal oxygen resistance and solvent resistance. At the same time, the cross‐linking network formed by the thermally reversible β‐hydroxyl ester bonds enables the rubber to a good reprocessability. The second recycled ENR‐DTSA‐F had achieved 90.4% of the retention ratio of the tensile strength and reached 69.9% of the retention ratio of the elongation at break compared to the original sample. This work provides a simple method for preparing ENR materials with good environmental resistance and reprocessability.

Abstract:The amount of elastomeric waste, especially from tires is constantly increasing on a global scale. The recycling of these residua should be considered a priority. Compounding the waste rubbers with other polymers can be an excellent alternative to reuse waste materials. This procedure requires solving the issue of the lack of compatibility between the waste rubber particles and other polymers. Simultaneously, there is a claim for introducing biodegradable plastics materials to reduce their environmental impact. In this work, reclaimed rubber/poly(ε-caprolactone) (RR/PCL) blends are proposed to enhance the recycling and upcycling possibilities of waste rubbers. The results show that the addition of PCL to the RR allows obtaining blends with improved mechanical properties, good thermal stability, and enhanced interfacial compatibility between the used components. Structure and properties of the proposed RR/PCL have been studied by means of static and dynamic mechanical testing, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)-FTIR analysis.

Abstract:In an effort to synthesize chemically recyclable thermoplastic elastomers, a redox-switchable catalytic system was developed to synthesize triblock copolymers containing stiff poly(lactic acid) (PLA) end blocks and a flexible poly(tetrahydrofuran- co- cyclohexene oxide) (poly(THF- co -CHO) copolymer as the mid-block. The orthogonal reactivity induced by changing the oxidation state of the iron-based catalyst enabled the synthesis of the triblock copolymers in a single reaction flask from a mixture of monomers. The triblock copolymers demonstrated improved flexibility compared to poly( l -lactic acid) (PLLA) and thermomechanical properties that resemble thermoplastic elastomers, including a rubbery plateau in the range of −60 to 40 °C. The triblock copolymers containing a higher percentage of THF versus CHO were more flexible, and a blend of triblock copolymers containing PLLA and poly( d -lactic acid) (PDLA) end-blocks resulted in a stereocomplex that further increased polymer flexibility. Besides the low cost of lactide and THF, the sustainability of this new class of triblock copolymers was also supported by their depolymerization, which was achieved by exposing the copolymers sequentially to FeCl 3 and ZnCl 2 /PEG under reactive distillation conditions.

Abstract:A covalent adaptable network can endow rubber materials with recyclability and reprocessability and is expected to alleviate black pollution caused by end-of-life rubber. However, the loss of traditional vulcanization systems severely sacrifices their strength, and the tensile strength in the current study rarely exceeds 10 MPa unless fillers are added. In this work, we proposed a self-strengthening process based on dual-dynamic units (imine and disulfide), briefly, under heating, phenylsulfur radicals generated from aromatic disulfide bonds can react with double bonds (mostly vinyl) and/or couple with allyl sites, thus reforming a stronger cross-linked network. The neighboring imine unit is not affected and provides excellent thermal reprocessability and chemical recyclability. The result shows that the tensile strength can reach 19.27 MPa via self-strengthening without adding fillers or any other additives, and this ultra-high-strength is much higher than those of all known recyclable polybutadiene-based rubber materials. In addition, the material also has malleability, shape memory, and self-welding properties. By doping carbon nanotubes, a recyclable conductive composite can also be achieved. In general, we envision that this enhanced strategy has great potential to be generalized for all elastomers containing double bonds (such as styrene-butadiene rubber, nitrile rubber, isoprene rubber, and their derivatives). The reprocessability and self-welding are practical for on-site assembly or repair of composite parts and extend the service life of materials.

Abstract:Reinforcement, recycling, and functional applications are three important issues in elastomer science and engineering. It is of great importance, but rarely achievable, to integrate these properties into elastomers. Herein, we report a simple way to prepare covalently cross-linked yet recyclable, robust, and macroscopically responsive elastomer vitrimers by engineering exchangeable bonds into rubber–carbon nanodot (CD) interphase using CD as high-functionality cross-linker. The cross-linked rubbers can rearrange the network topology through transesterification reactions in the interphase, conferring the materials the ability to be recycled, reshaped, and welded. The relatively short chains bridging adjacent CD are highly stretched and preferentially rupture to dissipate energy under external force, resulting in remarkable improvements on the mechanical properties. Moreover, the malleable and welding properties allow the samples to access reconfigurable/multiple shape memory effects.

Abstract:Conventional thermosets are infusible and insoluble covalently cross-linked polymers which are difficult to be recycled and reused when discarded. Recent years witnessed development of closed-loop recycling of novel thermosets as well as their applications in composites, 3D printing materials, etc. through degradation technique innovation and reversible chemistries (or dynamic chemistries). In this review, the approaches of achieving closed-loop recycling of novel thermosets and their downstream materials are divided into two categories. One is to hydrolyze the thermosets in an acidic, alkaline or catalyst solution, and then recover the monomers or oligomers which can be reused to prepare thermosets or their functional materials. Another is to de-cross-link and re-cross-link the thermosets through the exchange reaction of dynamic bonds. In recent years, various cleavable (or dynamic) bonds such as ester bond, acetal linkage, Schiff base structure, disulfide bond, hexahydrotriazine structure, boronic ester bond, and so on have been developed for the preparation of closed-loop recyclable thermosets, and their closed-loop recycling mechanisms have also been fully demonstrated. By adopting the strategy of closed-loop recycling through hydrolysis, the recovered thermosets have the same structure and properties as the original resin. However, the degradation process strongly depends on the wettability of the resin, the pH of the solution or catalyst, and how to improve monomer recovery (whether it can reach ~100%) remains a challenge. When the thermosets are closed-loop recycled through dynamic reaction, the recovery rate is ideally 100%, however, the recycling must be carried out at high temperature, and the performance of the recovered resin will inevitably be lost compared with the original thermosets.

Metathetic degradation of waste natural rubbers for potential reutilization

Abstract:Waste rubbers have caused a severe environmental pollution now. Their reutilization is an urgent eco-economic demand for the sustainable society by converting the wastes into feedstock for the chemical industry. In the present work, the metathetic degradation of waste rubbers (waste natural rubber gloves as model) was comprehensively investigated with different chain transfer agents (CTAs). The waste natural rubber gloves could be degraded with three CTAs with different polarities (styrene, methyl acrylate (MA) and acrylic acid (AA)), catalyzing with the HG2 catalyst in chloroform. Four kinds of main reactions were proposed in the olefin cross-metathesis (OCM) degradation, based on the product analysis. It was also found that the degradation was favored by a consistent low concentration of the CTA, inhibiting the by-reactions and subsequently improving the degradation yield. Therefore, an easy and effective strategy for the high-performance OCM degradation of waste rubbers was proposed by dropping the CTA.
