Abstract:In this paper we prove that sub-Gaussian estimates of heat kernels of regular Dirichlet forms are equivalent to the regularity of measures, two-sided bounds of effective resistances and the locality of semigroups, on strongly recurrent compact metric spaces. Upper bounds of effective resistances imply the compact embedding theorem for domains of Dirichlet forms, and give rise to the existence of Green functions with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions. Green functions play an important role in our analysis. Our emphasis in this paper is on the analytic aspects of deriving two-sided sub-Gaussian bounds of heat kernels. We also give the probabilistic interpretation for each of the main analytic steps.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the problem of estimating the heat kernel on measure-metric spaces equipped with a resistance form. Such spaces admit a corresponding resistance metric that reflects the conductivity properties of the set. In this situation, it has been proved that when there is uniform polynomial volume growth with respect to the resistance metric the behaviour of the on-diagonal part of the heat kernel is completely determined by this rate of volume growth. However, recent results have shown that for certain random fractal sets, there are global and local (point-wise) fluctuations in the volume as $r\rightarrow 0$ and so these uniform results do not apply. Motivated by these examples, we present global and local on-diagonal heat kernel estimates when the volume growth is not uniform, and demonstrate that when the volume fluctuations are non-trivial, there will be nontrivial fluctuations of the same order (up to exponents) in the short-time heat kernel asymptotics. We also provide bounds for the off-diagonal part of the heat kernel. These results apply to deterministic and random self-similar fractals, and metric space dendrites (the topological analogues of graph trees).

Abstract:Quenched and annealed heat kernel estimates are established for Fontes–Isopi–Newman (FIN) processes on spaces equipped with a resistance form. These results are new even in the case of the one-dimensional FIN diffusion, and also apply to fractals such as the Sierpinski gasket and carpet.

Abstract:We prove that, in a setting of local Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces, a two-sided sub-Gaussian estimate of the heat kernel is equivalent to the conjunction of the volume doubling property, the elliptic Harnack inequality, and a certain estimate of the capacity between concentric balls. The main technical tool is the equivalence between the capacity estimate and the estimate of a mean exit time in a ball that uses two-sided estimates of a Green function in a ball.

Abstract:We study the basic properties of resolvent equipped with degenerate metric based on restricted maximal monotonicity, and further propose several conditions for the well-definedness and weak convergence of the fixed point iterations. The results help to understand the behaviours of many operator splitting algorithms in the kernel space of degenerate metric.

Abstract:It is well-known that for a Brownian motion, if we change the medium to be inhomogeneous by a measure μ, then the new motion (time changed process) will diffuse according to a different metric D(·, ·). In [27], Kigami initiated a general scheme to construct such metrics through some self-similar weight functions g on the symbolic space. In this paper we give an in-depth study of this construction on the nested fractals and the generalized Sierpinski carpets; we assume further that the weight functions g := ga is generated by the “symmetric” weights a. LetM be the set of a such that Dga defines a metric, and let S be the boundary ofM. We provide a recursive weight transfer construction to obtain the M on the nested fractals, and illustrate the construction by the Lindstrøm snowflake; for the Sierpinski carpet we use a symmetric argument directly to obtain theM. Our main result is to characterize the metrics from ga, a ∈ S satisfy the metric chain condition (MCC), and are equivalent to the geodesic metrics. The MCC is used for the lower estimate of the sub-Gaussian heat kernel. This together with the upper estimate in [27] allows us to have a concrete class of metrics for time change, and for the two sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate off-diagonal upper bounds of heat kernels for local regular Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces. The key is to estimate from above the solution of the Schrödinger equation in any ball. As an application, we obtain heat kernel upper estimates onmetric measure spaces if both Dirichlet Green functions and volumes of balls decay at polynomial growth.

Let M be the domain of a such that D ga defines a metric, and let S be the boundary of M . One of our main results is that the metrics from g a satisfy the metric chain condition if and only if a ∈ S. To determine M and S , we provide a recursive weight transfer construction on the nested fractals, and a basic symmetric argument on the Sierpinski carpet. As an application, we use the metric chain condition to obtain the lower estimate of the sub-Gaussian heat kernel. This together with the upper estimate obtained by Kigami allows us to have a concrete class of metrics for the time change, and the two-sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate on the fundamental fractals.

Abstract:We consider a metric measure space (M, d, mu) and a heat kernel p(t) (x, y) on M satisfying certain upper and lower estimates, which depend on two parameters alpha and beta. We show that under additional mild assumptions, these parameters are determined by the intrinsic properties of the space (M, d, mu). Namely, alpha is the Hausdorff dimension of this space, whereas beta, called the walk dimension, is determined via the properties of the family of Besov spaces W-sigma,W-2 on M. Moreover, the parameters alpha and beta are related by the inequalities 2 less than or equal to beta less than or equal to alpha + 1.We prove also the embedding theorems for the space W-beta/2,W-2, and use them to obtain the existence results for weak solutions to semilinear elliptic equations on M of the form-Lu + f(x, u) = g(x),where C is the generator of the semigroup associated with p(t).The framework in this paper is applicable for a large class of fractal domains, including the generalized Sierpiniski carpet in R-n.

Abstract:For the Laplacian Δ \Delta defined on a p.c.f. self-similar fractal, we give an explicit formula for the resolvent kernel of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions and also with Neumann boundary conditions. That is, we construct a symmetric function G ( λ ) G^{(\lambda )} which solves ( λ I − Δ ) − 1 f ( x ) = ∫ G ( λ ) ( x , y ) f ( y ) d μ ( y ) (\lambda \mathbb {I} - \Delta )^{-1} f(x) = \int G^{(\lambda )}(x,y) f(y) \, d\mu (y) . The method is similar to Kigami’s construction of the Green kernel and G ( λ ) G^{(\lambda )} is expressed as a sum of scaled and “translated” copies of a certain function ψ ( λ ) \psi ^{(\lambda )} which may be considered as a fundamental solution of the resolvent equation. Examples of the explicit resolvent kernel formula are given for the unit interval, standard Sierpinski gasket, and the level-3 Sierpinski gasket S G 3 SG_3 .

We obtain estimates of the integral of the kernel wα,β,μ , translation and convolution product related to φα,iτμ,β . We define and explore a generalization of the Kontorovich–Lebedev transform. Abstract:We derive a Harnack inequality for positive solutions of the f-heat equation and Gaussian upper and lower bound estimates for the f-heat kernel on complete smooth metric measure spaces with Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature bounded below. Both upper and lower bound estimates are sharp when the Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature is nonnegative. The main argument is the De Giorgi–Nash–Moser theory. As applications, we prove an $L_f^1$-Liouville theorem for f-subharmonic functions and an $L_f^1$-uniqueness theorem for f-heat equations when f has at most linear growth. We also obtain eigenvalues estimates and f-Green’s function estimates for the f-Laplace operator.

Abstract:In this paper we present new heat kernel upper bounds for a certain class of non-local regular Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces, including fractal spaces. We use a new purely analytic method where one of the main tools is the parabolic maximum principle. We deduce an off-diagonal upper bound of the heat kernel from the on-diagonal one under the volume regularity hypothesis, restriction of the jump kernel and the survival hypothesis. As an application, we obtain two-sided estimates of heat kernels for non-local regular Dirichlet forms with finite effective resistance, including settings with the walk dimension greater than 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ probabilistic techniques to derive sharp, explicit two-sided estimates for the heat kernel of the nonlocal kinetic operator $$ \Delta^{\alpha/2}_v + v \cdot \nabla_x, \quad \alpha \in (0, 2),\ (x,v)\in {\mathbb R}^{d}\times{\mathbb R}^d,$$ where $ \Delta^{\alpha/2}_v $ represents the fractional Laplacian acting on the velocity variable $v$. Additionally, we establish logarithmic gradient estimates with respect to both the spatial variable $x$ and the velocity variable $v$. In fact, the estimates are developed for more general non-symmetric stable-like operators, demonstrating explicit dependence on the lower and upper bounds of the kernel functions. These results, in particular, provide a solution to a fundamental problem in the study of \emph{nonlocal} kinetic operators.

Abstract:We study the heat kernel of a regular symmetric Dirichlet form on a metric space with doubling measure, in particular, a connection between the properties of the jump measure and the long time behaviour of the heat kernel. Abstract:In this survey we discuss heat kernel estimates of self-similar type on metric spaces with doubling measures. We characterize the tail functions from heat kernel estimates in both non-local and local cases. In the local case we also specify the domain of the energy form as a certain Besov space, and identify the walk dimension in terms of the critical Besov exponent. The techniques used include self-improvement of heat kernel upper bound and the maximum principle for weak solutions. All proofs are completely analytic.
