Abstract:Combining the Hardy-Littlewood k-tuple conjecture with a heuristic application of extreme-value statistics, we propose a family of estimator formulas for predicting maximal gaps between prime k-tuples. Computations show that the estimator a(log(x/a)-b) satisfactorily predicts the maximal gaps below x, where a is the expected average gap between the same type of k-tuples, a=O(log^k x). Heuristics suggest that maximal gaps between prime k-tuples near x are approximately a*log(x/a), and thus have the order O(log^{k+1}x). The distribution of maximal gaps around the trend curve a*log(x/a) is close to the Gumbel distribution. We explore two implications of this model of gaps: record gaps between primes and Legendre-type conjectures for prime k-tuples.

Abstract:We study the gaps between consecutive prime numbers directly through Eratosthenes sieve. Using elementary methods, we identify a recursive relation for these gaps and for specific sequences of consecutive gaps, known as constellations. Using this recursion we can estimate the numbers of a gap or of a constellation that occur between a prime and its square. This recursion also has explicit implications for open questions about gaps between prime numbers, including three questions posed by Erdös and Turán.

Abstract:In a recent joint work with D.A. Goldston and C.Y. Yildirim we just missed by a hairbreadth a proof that bounded gaps between primes occur infinitely often. In the present work it is shown that adding to the primes a much thinner set, called almost prime powers, the union of the set of primes and almost prime powers contains already infinitely many bounded gaps. More precisely it is shown that if we add to the set of primes either almost prime squares having exactly two, nearly equal prime factors or if we add to the set of primes almost prime cubes having exactly three, nearly equal prime factors, then the resulting set contains already infinitely many bounded gaps.

Abstract:We prove analogues of the Green-Tao-Ziegler theorem on linear constellations in primes, in which the primes under consideration are restricted by certain arithmetic conditions. Our first main result is conditional upon Hooley's Riemann hypothesis and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed primitive roots. Our second main result is unconditional and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed Artin symbols in given Galois number fields. In the appendix we present an application of the second result in inverse Galois theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the pure $\kappa-$sparse gapsets and our focus on getting information about the sequence observed in Table 3 at [1], this sequence is listed in OEIS as A374773. We verify that the cardinality of the set of gapsets with genus $3n+1$ such that the maximum distance between two consecutive elements is $2n$ is equal to the cardinality of the set of gapsets with genus $3n+2$ such that the maximum distance between two consecutive elements is $2n+1$, for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$. In particular, we compute the cardinality of the symmetric and pseudo-symmetric gapsets in these cases.

Abstract:One of the themes of this paper is recent results on large gaps between primes. The first of these results has been achieved in the paper [12] by Ford, Green, Konyagin and Tao. It was later improved in the joint paper [13] of these four authors with Maynard. One of the main ingredients of these results are old methods due to Erdős and Rankin. Other ingredients are important breakthrough results due to Goldston, Pintz and Yildirim [15, 16, 17], and their extension by Maynard on small gaps between primes. All these previous results are discussed shortly. The results on the appearance of $k$-th powers of primes contained in those large gaps, obtained by the author in joint work with Maier [23, 24, 25] are based on a combination of the results just described with the matrix method of Maier.

Abstract:We use short divisor sums to approximate prime tuples and moments for primes in short intervals. By connecting these results to classical moment problems we are able to prove that a positive proportion of consecutive primes are within a quarter of the average spacing between primes.

Abstract:By an $r$-tuplet in a permutation we mean a family of $r$ pairwise disjoint subsequences with the same relative order. The length of an $r$-tuplet is defined as the length of any single subsequence in the family. Let $t^{(r)}(n)$ denote the largest $k$ such that every permutation of length $n$ contains an $r$-tuplet of length $k$. We prove that $t^{(r)}(n)=O\left(n^{\frac r{2r-1}}\right)$ and $t^{(r)}(n)=\Omega\left( n^{\frac{R}{2R-1}} \right)$, where $R=\binom{2r-1}r$. We conjecture that the upper bound brings the correct order of magnitude of $t^{(r)}(n)$ and support this conjecture by proving that it holds for almost all permutations. Our work generalizes previous studies of the case $r=2$.

A New Approach to Find the Böhm-Vitense gap

Abstract:This paper discusses the B{ö}hm-Vitense gap, a gap in the colours of stars that occurs when the atmosphere changes from radiative to convective in deep layers. We are using different algorithms for detecting gaps in colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), including the k-nearest neighbours (k-NN) and UniDip algorithms. We propose using a combination of the k-NN algorithm and the UniDip algorithm and manual verification to identify gaps unlikely to be of a statistical origin. Using the $Gaia$ photometric system, i.e. $BP-RP$, we took the data of 130 star clusters and searched for gaps in the ranges of 0.40 to 0.47\,mag, and 0.56 to 0.60\,mag, respectively. We analysed all data statistically and identified the gaps in the individual clusters. Finally, we applied the kernel density estimator to see how the gaps are distributed.

Abstract:In 1992, Reid asked whether hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same geodesic length spectra are necessarily commensurable. While this is known to be true for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the non-arithmetic case is still open. Building towards a negative answer to this question, Futer and Millichap recently constructed infinitely many pairs of non-commensurable, non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have the same volume and whose length spectra begin with the same first $m$ geodesic lengths. In the present paper, we show that this phenomenon is surprisingly common in the arithmetic setting. In particular, given any arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold derived from a quaternion algebra, any finite subset $S$ of its geodesic length spectrum, and any $k \geq 2$, we produce infinitely many $k$-tuples of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds which are pairwise non-commensurable, have geodesic length spectra containing $S$, and have volumes lying in an interval of (universally) bounded length. The main technical ingredient in our proof is a bounded gaps result for prime ideals in number fields lying in Chebotarev sets which extends recent work of Thorner.

Abstract:Based on the primes less than 4×1018 , Oliveira e Silva et al. ( Math. Comp. , 83(288):2033–2060, 2014) conjectured an asymptotic formula for the sum of the k th power of the gaps between consecutive primes less than a large number x . We show that the conjecture of Oliveira e Silva holds if and only if the k th moment of the first n gaps is asymptotic to the k th moment of an exponential distribution with mean log n , though the distribution of gaps is not exponential. Asymptotically exponential moments imply that the gaps asymptotically obey Taylor's law of fluctuation scaling: variance of the first n gaps ∼ (mean of the first n gaps) 2 . If the distribution of the first n gaps is asymptotically exponential with mean log n , then the expectation of the largest of the first n gaps is asymptotic to ( log n)2 . The largest of the first n gaps is asymptotic to ( log n)2 if and only if the Cramér-Shanks conjecture holds. Numerical counts of gaps and the maximal gap G n among the first n gaps test these results. While most values of G n are better approximated by ( log n)2 than by other models, seven exceptional values of n with Gn>2e−γ( log n)2 suggest that lim supn→∞Gn/[2e−γ( log n)2] may exceed 1.

A Catalog of Multiplicity among Bright Stellar Systems

Abstract:We consider the multiplicity of stellar systems with (combined) magnitude brighter than 6.00 in Hipparcos magnitudes. We identify 4559 such bright systems (including the Sun), and the frequencies of multiplicities 1, 2,..., 7 are found to be 2718, 1437, 285, 86, 20, 11 and 2. We discuss the uncertainties, which are substantial. We also consider the distributions of periods of orbits and sub-orbits. We note that for the even more restricted set of 478 systems with V_H <= 4.00 the proportions of higher multiples up to sextuple are progressively larger (213, 179, 54, 19, 8, 5), suggesting substantial incompleteness in even the reasonably well-studied larger sample. This sample can be seen as relatively thoroughly studied for multiplicity, and reasonably representative of stars more massive than the Sun. But the restriction to V_H <= 6 means that our sample contains hardly any systems where all components are low-mass main-sequence stars (K or M). Data on multiplicity is important as a constraint on (a) the star-formation problem, (b) the problem of the evolution of the Galactic stellar population, and (c) the interaction of dynamics and evolution through the effect of Kozai cycles. We discuss these topics briefly.

Abstract:For a natural number $N\geq 2$ and a real $\alpha$ such that $0 < \alpha \leq \sqrt{N}-1$, we define $I_\alpha:=[\alpha,\alpha+1]$ and $I_\alpha^-:=[\alpha,\alpha+1)$ and investigate the continued fraction map $T_\alpha:I_\alpha \to I_\alpha^-$, which is defined as $T_\alpha(x):= N/x-d(x),$ where $d(x):=\left \lfloor N/x -\alpha\right \rfloor$. For all natural $N \geq 7$, for certain values of $\alpha$, open intervals $(a,b) \subset I_\alpha$ exist such that for almost every $x \in I_{\alpha}$ there is an natural number $n_0$ for which $T_\alpha^n(x) \notin (a,b)$ for all $n\geq n_0$. These \emph{gaps} $(a,b)$ are investigated in the square $\Upsilon_\alpha:=I_\alpha \times I_\alpha^-$, where the \emph{orbits} $T_\alpha^k(x), k=0,1,2,\ldots$ of numbers $x \in I_\alpha$ are represented as cobwebs. The squares $\Upsilon_\alpha$ are the union of \emph{fundamental regions}, which are related to the cylinder sets of the map $T_\alpha$, according to the finitely many values of $d$ in $T_\alpha$. In this paper some clear conditions are found under which $I_\alpha$ is gapless. When $I_\alpha$ consists of at least five cylinder sets, it is always gapless. In the case of four cylinder sets there are usually no gaps, except for the rare cases that there is one, very wide gap. Gaplessness in the case of two or three cylinder sets depends on the position of the endpoints of $I_\alpha$ with regard to the fixed points of $I_\alpha$ under $T_\alpha$.

Seven new triply eclipsing triple star systems

Abstract:We have identified nearly a hundred close triply eclipsing hierarchical triple star systems from data taken with the space telescope TESS. These systems are noteworthy in that we can potentially determine their dynamical and astrophysical parameters with a high precision. In the present paper, we report the comprehensive study of seven new compact triply eclipsing triple star systems taken from this larger sample: TICs 133771812, 176713425, 185615681, 287756035, 321978218, 323486857, and 650024463. Most of the data for this study come from TESS observations, but two of them have Gaia measurements of their outer orbits, and we obtained supplemental radial velocity (RV) measurements for three of the systems. The eclipse timing variation curves extracted from the TESS data, the photometric light curves, the RV points, and the spectral energy distribution (SED) are combined in a complex photodynamical analysis to yield the stellar and orbital parameters of all seven systems. Four of the systems are quite compact with outer periods in the range of 41-56 days. All of the systems are substantially flat, with mutual inclination angles of < ~2 degrees. Including the systems reported in this work, we have now studied in considerable detail some 30 triply eclipsing triples with TESS, and are accumulating a meaningful census of these systems.

Abstract:We find explicit maximal rank Coxeter quotients for the knot groups of 595,515 out of the 1,701,936 knots through 16 crossings. We thus calculate the bridge numbers and verify Cappell and Shaneson's Meridional Rank Conjecture for these knots. In addition, we provide a computational tool for establishing the conjecture for those knots beyond 16 crossings whose meridional ranks can be detected via finite Coxeter quotients.
