Abstract:We use short divisor sums to approximate prime tuples and moments for primes in short intervals. By connecting these results to classical moment problems we are able to prove that a positive proportion of consecutive primes are within a quarter of the average spacing between primes.

Abstract:In a recent joint work with D.A. Goldston and C.Y. Yildirim we just missed by a hairbreadth a proof that bounded gaps between primes occur infinitely often. In the present work it is shown that adding to the primes a much thinner set, called almost prime powers, the union of the set of primes and almost prime powers contains already infinitely many bounded gaps. More precisely it is shown that if we add to the set of primes either almost prime squares having exactly two, nearly equal prime factors or if we add to the set of primes almost prime cubes having exactly three, nearly equal prime factors, then the resulting set contains already infinitely many bounded gaps.

Abstract:Baker, Harman, and Pintz showed that a weak form of the Prime Number Theorem holds in intervals of the form [x-x0.525,x]$$[x-x^{0.525},x]$$ for large x. In this paper, we extend a result of Maynard and Tao concerning small gaps between primes to intervals of this length. More precisely, we prove that for any δ∈[0.525,1]$$\delta \in [0.525,1]$$ there exist positive integers k, d such that for sufficiently large x, the interval [x-xδ,x]$$[x-x^\delta ,x]$$ contains ≫kxδ(logx)k$$\gg _{k} \frac{x^\delta }{(\log x)^k}$$ pairs of consecutive primes differing by at most d. This confirms a speculation of Maynard that results on small gaps between primes can be refined to the setting of short intervals of this length.

Abstract:Let $m \in \mathbb{N}$ be large. We show that there exist infinitely many primes $q_{1}< \cdot\cdot\cdot < q_{m+1}$ such that \[ q_{m+1}-q_{1}=O(e^{7.63m}) \] and $q_{j}+2$ has at most \[ \frac{7.36m}{\log 2} + \frac{4\log m}{\log 2} + 21 \] prime factors for each $1 \leq j \leq m+1$. This improves the previous result of Li and Pan, replacing $e^{7.63m}$ by $m^{4}e^{8m}$ and $\frac{7.36m}{\log 2} + \frac{4\log m}{\log 2} + 21$ by $\frac{16m}{\log 2} + \frac{5\log m}{\log 2} + 37$. The main inputs are the Maynard-Tao sieve, a minorant for the indicator function of the primes constructed by Baker and Irving, for which a stronger equidistribution theorem in arithmatic progressions to smooth moduli is applicable, and Tao's approach previously used to estimate $\sum_{x \leq n < 2x} \mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}(n)\mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}(n+12)\omega_{n}$, where $\mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}$ stands for the characteristic function of the primes and $\omega_{n}$ are multidimensional sieve weights.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a large parameter. We will first give a new estimate for the integral moments of primes in short intervals of the type $(p,p+h]$, where $p\leq X$ is a prime number and $h=\odi{X}$. Then we will apply this to prove that for every $\lambda>1/2$ there exists a positive proportion of primes $p\leq X$ such that the interval $(p,p+ \lambda\log X]$ contains at least a prime number. As a consequence we improve Cheer and Goldston's result on the size of real numbers $\lambda>1$ with the property that there is a positive proportion of integers $m\leq X$ such that the interval $(m,m+ \lambda\log X]$ contains no primes. We also prove other results concerning the moments of the gaps between consecutive primes and about the positive proportion of integers $m\leq X$ such that the interval $(m,m+ \lambda\log X]$ contains at least a prime number. The last application of these techniques are two theorems (the first one unconditional and the second one in which we assume the validity of the Riemann Hypothesis and of a form of the Montgomery pair correlation conjecture) on the positive proportion of primes $p\leq X$ such that the interval $(p,p+ \lambda\log X]$ contains no primes.

Abstract:We prove that the primes below $x$ are, on average, equidistributed in arithmetic progressions to smooth moduli of size up to $x^{1/2+1/40-\epsilon}$. The exponent of distribution $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{1}{40}$ improves on a result of Polymath, who had previously obtained the exponent $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{7}{300}$. As a consequence, we improve results on intervals of bounded length which contain many primes, showing that $\liminf_{n \rightarrow \infty} (p_{n+m}-p_n) = O(\exp(3.8075 m))$. The main new ingredient of our proof is a modification of the q-van der Corput process. It allows us to exploit additional averaging for the exponential sums which appear in the Type I estimates of Polymath.

Abstract:The set of short intervals between consecutive primes squared has the pleasant---but seemingly unexploited---property that each interval $s_k:=\{p_k^2, \dots,p_{k+1}^2-1\}$ is fully sieved by the $k$ first primes. Here we take advantage of this essential characteristic and present evidence for the conjecture that $\pi_k \sim |s_k|/ \log p_{k+1}^2$, where $\pi_k$ is the number of primes in $s_k$; or even stricter, that $y=x^{1/2}$ is both necessary and sufficient for the prime number theorem to be valid in intervals of length $y$. In addition, we propose and substantiate that the prime counting function $\pi(x)$ is best understood as a sum of correlated random variables $\pi_k$. Under this assumption, we derive the theoretical variance of $\pi(p_{k+1}^2)=\sum_{j=1}^k \pi_j$, from which we are led to conjecture that $|\pi({x})-\textrm{li}(x)| =O(\sqrt{\textrm{li}(x)})$. Emerging from our investigations is the view that the intervals between consecutive primes squared hold the key to a furthered understanding of the distribution of primes; as evidenced, this perspective also builds strong support in favour of the Riemann hypothesis.

Abstract:We posit that $d_n^2 < 2p_{n+1}$ holds for every $n\geq 1$, where $p_n$ represents the $n$th prime and $d_n$ stands for the $n$th prime gap i.e. $d_n := p_{n+1} - p_n$. Then, the presence of a prime between successive perfect squares, as well as the validity of $\sqrt{p_{n+1}} - \sqrt{p_n} < 1$ are derived. Next, $\pi(x)$ being the number of primes $p$ up to $x$, we deduce $\pi(n^2-n) < \pi(n^2) < \pi(n^2+n)$ $(n\geq 2)$. In addition, a proof of $\pi((n+1)^k) - \pi(n^k) \geq \pi(2^k)$ \ $(k\geq 2, n\geq 1)$ is worked out. Finally, we put forward the conjecture that any rational number $r$ $(0\leq r \leq 1)$ represents an accumulation point for the sequence $\left(\{\sqrt{p_n}\}\right)_{n\geq 1}$.

Abstract:We prove an analogue of a result by Goldston, Pintz and Yildirim for small gaps between primes that split completely in an abelian number field. We prove both a conditional result assuming the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture, and an unconditional result. We also give another proof of the same result in the special case of a quadratic extension of class number 1, which relies on a generalization of the Bombieri-Vinogradov theorem for quadratic number fields.

Abstract:Assuming the Riemann hypothesis, this article discusses a new elementary argument that seems to prove that the maximal prime gap of a finite sequence of primes p_1, p_2, ..., p_n <= x, satisfies max {p_(n+1) - p_n : p_n <= x} <= c1((logx)^2)/loglogx, c1 > 0 constant. Equivalently, it shows that the very short intervals (x, x + y] contain prime numbers for all y > c2((logx)^2)/loglogx, c2 > 0 constant, and sufficiently large x > 0.

This provides us with a solid foundation, to resolve conclusively the Second Hardy-Littlewood ́s conjecture. Abstract:One of the themes of this paper is recent results on large gaps between primes. The first of these results has been achieved in the paper [12] by Ford, Green, Konyagin and Tao. It was later improved in the joint paper [13] of these four authors with Maynard. One of the main ingredients of these results are old methods due to Erdős and Rankin. Other ingredients are important breakthrough results due to Goldston, Pintz and Yildirim [15, 16, 17], and their extension by Maynard on small gaps between primes. All these previous results are discussed shortly. The results on the appearance of $k$-th powers of primes contained in those large gaps, obtained by the author in joint work with Maier [23, 24, 25] are based on a combination of the results just described with the matrix method of Maier.

Abstract:In the present work we prove a number of surprising results about gaps between consecutive primes and arithmetic progressions in the sequence of generalized twin primes which could not have been proven without the recent fantastic achievement of Yitang Zhang about the existence of bounded gaps between consecutive primes. Most of these results would have belonged to the category of science fiction a decade ago. However, the presented results are far from being immediate consequences of Zhang's famous theorem: they require various new ideas, other important properties of the applied sieve function and a closer analysis of the methods of Goldston-Pintz-Yildirim, Green-Tao, and Zhang, respectively.

Abstract:We prove near-optimal upper bounds for the odd moments of the distribution of coprime residues in short intervals, confirming a conjecture of Montgomery and Vaughan. As an application we prove near-optimal upper bounds for the average of the refined singular series in the Hardy-Littlewood conjectures concerning the number of prime $k$-tuples for $k$ odd. The main new ingredient is a near-optimal upper bound for the number of solutions to $\sum_{1\leq i\leq k}\frac{a_i}{q_i}\in \mathbb{Z}$ when $k$ is odd, with $(a_i,q_i)=1$ and restrictions on the size of the numerators and denominators, that is of independent interest.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

Abstract:In 1999, Balog, Brüdern, and Wooley (1999) showed there are infinitely many prime gaps $p-q$ that are $(\log p)^{\frac{3}{4}}$-smooth, and infinitely many consecutive prime gaps that are $(\log p)^\frac{7}{8}$-smooth. Advancements made since then by Zhang (2014), Maynard (2014), and Polymath8b (2014) towards resolving the twin prime conjecture have given us the tools to lower the bounds made by Balog, Brüdern, and Wooley to 47. Moreover, we can show there are infinitely many $m$-tuples of primes whose gaps are all $y_m$-smooth for a calculable prime $y_m$.

Abstract:Assuming a uniform variant of the Hardy-Littlewood prime $k$-tuple conjecture, we compute moments of the number of primes not exceeding $N$ in arithmetic progressions to a common large modulus $q$ as $a \pmod{q}$ varies. As a consequence, depending on the size of $\varphi(q)$ with respect to $N$, the prime count exhibits a Gaussian or Poissonian law. An interesting byproduct is that the least prime in arithmetic progressions follows an exponential distribution, where some unexpected discrepancies are observed for smooth $q$.

Abstract:We show that for all large enough x the interval [x, x + x1/2 log1.39 x] contains numbers with a prime factor p > x18/19. Our work builds on the previous works of Heath–Brown and Jia (1998) and Jia and Liu (2000) concerning the same problem for the longer intervals [x, x + x1/2 + ε]. We also incorporate some ideas from Harman's book Prime-detecting sieves (2007). The main new ingredient that we use is the iterative argument of Matomäki and Radziwiłł (2016) for bounding Dirichlet polynomial mean values, which is applied to obtain Type II information. This allows us to take shorter intervals than in the above-mentioned previous works. We have also had to develop ideas to avoid losing any powers of log x when applying Harman's sieve method.

Abstract:Some mean value theorems in the style of Bombieri-Vinogradov's theorem are discussed. They concern binary and ternary additive problems with primes in arithmetic progressions and short intervals. Nontrivial estimates for some of these mean values are given. As application inter alia, we show that for large odd n\not\equiv 1 (6), Goldbach's ternary problem n=p_1+p_2+p_3 is solvable with primes p_1,p_2 in short intervals p_i \in [X_i,X_i+Y] with X_{i}^{\theta_i}=Y, i=1,2, and \theta_1,\theta_2\geq 0.933 such that (p_1+2)(p_2+2) has at most 9 prime factors.
