Abstract:We obtain the triple correlations for a truncated divisor sum related to primes. We also obtain the mixed correlations for this divisor sum when it is summed over the primes, and give some applications to primes in short intervals.

Abstract:In a previous paper of ours [Phys. Rev. E64 (2001) 066603, e-print <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="physics/0001039" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/physics/0001039">physics/0001039</a>] we have shown localized (non-evanescent) solutions to Maxwell equations to exist, which propagate without distortion with Superluminal speed along normal-sized waveguides, and consist in trains of "X-shaped" beams. Those solutions possessed therefore infinite energy. In this note we show how to obtain, by contrast, finite-energy solutions, with the same localization and Superluminality properties. On correlation of the 3-fold divisor function with itself

Abstract:Let $\zeta^k(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty \tau_k(n) n^{-s}, \Re s > 1$. We present three conditional results on the ternary additive correlation sum $$\sum_{n\le X} \tau_3(n) \tau_3(n+h),\quad (h\ge 1),$$ and give numerical verifications of our method. The first is a conditional proof for the full main term of the above correlation sum for any composite shift $1 \le h \le X^{2/3}$, on assuming an averaged level of distribution for the three-fold divisor function $\tau_3(n)$ in arithmetic progressions to level two-thirds. The second is a conditional derivation for the leading order main term asymptotics of this correlation sum, also valid for any composite shift $1 \le h \le X^{2/3}$. The third result gives a complete expansion of the polynomial for the full main term for the special case $h=1$ from both our method and from the delta-method, showing that our answers match. Our method is essentially elementary, especially for the $h=1$ case, uses congruences, and, as alluded to earlier, gives the same answer as in prior prediction of Conrey and Gonek [Duke Math. J. 107 (3) 2002], previously computed by Ng and Thom [Funct. Approx. Comment. Math. 60(1) 2019], and unpublished heuristic probabilistic arguments of Tao. Our procedure is general and works to give the full main term with a power-saving error term for any correlations of the form $\sum_{n\le X} \tau_k(n) f(n+h)$, to any composite shift $h$, and for a wide class of arithmetic function $f(n)$.

Abstract:We use short divisor sums to approximate prime tuples and moments for primes in short intervals. By connecting these results to classical moment problems we are able to prove that a positive proportion of consecutive primes are within a quarter of the average spacing between primes.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

Abstract: Let $d(n; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ be the number of factorization $n=n_1n_2$ satisfying $n_i\equiv r_i\pmod{q_i}$ ($i=1,2$) and $\Delta(x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ be the error term of the summatory function of $d(n; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ with $x\geq (q_1q_2)^{1+\varepsilon}, 1\leq r_i\leq q_i$, and $(r_i, q_i)=1$ ($i=1, 2$). We study the power moments and sign changes of $\Delta(x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$, and prove that for a sufficiently large constant $C$, $\Delta(q_1q_2x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ changes sign in the interval $[T,T+C\sqrt{T}]$ for any large $T$. Meanwhile, we show that for a small constant $c'$, there exist infinitely many subintervals of length $c'\sqrt{T}\log^{-7}T$ in $[T,2T]$ where $\pm \Delta(q_1q_2x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)> c_5x^\frac{1}{4}$ always holds.

Abstract:Abstract We prove an exact formula for the variance of the divisor function over short intervals in $${\mathcal {A}}:= {\mathbb {F}}_q [T]$$ A : = F q [ T ] , where q is a prime power; and for correlations of the form $$d(A) d(A+B)$$ d ( A ) d ( A + B ) , where we average both A and B over certain intervals in $${\mathcal {A}}$$ A . We also obtain an exact formula for correlations of the form $$d(KQ+N) d (N)$$ d ( K Q + N ) d ( N ) , where Q is prime and K and N are averaged over certain intervals with $${{\,\textrm{deg}\,}}N \le {{\,\textrm{deg}\,}}Q -1 \le {{\,\textrm{deg}\,}}K$$ deg N ≤ deg Q - 1 ≤ deg K ; and we demonstrate that $$d(KQ+N)$$ d ( K Q + N ) and d ( N ) are uncorrelated. We generalize our results to $$\sigma _z$$ σ z defined by $$\sigma _z (A):= \sum _{E \mid A} |A |^z$$ σ z ( A ) : = ∑ E ∣ A | A | z for all monics $$A \in {\mathcal {A}}$$ A ∈ A . Our approach is to use the orthogonality relations of additive characters on $${\mathbb {F}}_q$$ F q to translate the problems to ones involving the ranks of Hankel matrices over $${\mathbb {F}}_q$$ F q . We prove several results regarding the rank and kernel structure of these matrices, thus demonstrating their number-theoretic properties. We also discuss extending our method to other divisor sums, such as those involving $$d_k$$ d k .

Abstract:We prove a theorem that allows one to count solutions to determinant equations twisted by a periodic weight with high uniformity in the modulus. It is obtained by using spectral methods of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ automorphic forms to study Poincaré series over congruence subgroups. By keeping track of interactions between multiple orbits we get advantages over the widely used sums of Kloosterman sums techniques. We showcase this with applications to correlations of the divisor functions twisted by periodic functions and the fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions on the critical line.

Abstract:We prove asymptotic results for the singular series associated to the distribution of three primes. Assuming a quantitative version of Hardy and Littlewood's conjecture on prime 3-tuples, we deduce an asymptotic formula related to the joint distribution of three primes. This improves recent results of Kuperberg and completes results by Montgomery and Soundararajan. Following the Montgomery and Soundararajan approach, we derive conjectural applications to the distribution of primes in short intervals.

Abstract:We investigate the group of points of the $3$-sphere modulo a prime, point out connections to other known groups and the Chebyshev polynomials, and show that there is an infinite series which converges if and only if there are finitely many pairs of twin primes. Hence to prove that that the series diverges is to prove the twin prime conjecture.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a subset of the primes of lower density strictly larger than $\frac12$. Then, every sufficiently large even integer is a sum of four primes from the set $P$. We establish similar results for $k$-summands, with $k\geq 4$, and for $k \geq 4$ distinct subsets of primes. This extends the work of H.~Li, H.~Pan, as well as X.~Shao on sums of three primes, and A.~Alsteri and X.~Shao on sums of two primes. The primary new contributions come from elementary combinatorial lemmas.

We provide upper and lower bounds for their box, ball and isotropic discrepancy, thereby exhibiting some deviations from random point sets. The analysis is based, among other things, on a new bound for a triple sum of Kloosterman sums.

Abstract:We prove some distribution results for the $k$-fold divisor function in arithmetic progressions to moduli that exceed the square-root of length $X$ of the sum, with appropriate constrains and averaging on the moduli, saving a power of $X$ from the trivial bound. On assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we obtain uniform power saving error terms that are independent of $k$. We follow and specialize Y.T. Zhang's method on bounded gaps between primes to our setting. Our arguments are essentially self-contained, with the exception on the use of Deligne's work on the Riemann Hypothesis for varieties over finite fields. In particular, we avoid the reliance on Siegel's theorem, leading to some effective estimates.

Abstract:Let $\tau_3(n)$ be the triple divisor function which is the number of solutions of the equation $d_1d_2d_3=n$ in natural numbers. It is shown that $$ \sum_{1\leq n_1,n_2,n_3\leq \sqrt{x}}\tau_3(n_1^2+n_2^2+n_3^2)=c_1x^{\frac{3}{2}}(\log x)^2+ c_2x^{\frac{3}{2}}\log x +c_3x^{\frac{3}{2}} +O_{\varepsilon}(x^{\frac{11}{8}+\varepsilon}) $$ for some constants $c_1$, $c_2$ and $c_3$.

On Chen's theorem, Goldbach's conjecture and almost prime twins

Abstract:Let $N$ denote a sufficiently large even integer, we define $D_{1,2}(N)$ as the same as those in previous articles about Chen's theorem. In this paper, we show that $D_{1,2}(N) \geqslant 1.733 \frac{C(N) N}{(\log N)^2}$, improving previous record of Wu about $93\%$. We also get similar results on twin prime problem and additive representations of integers. An important step in the proof is the application of the theorems of Lichtman.

Abstract:In this paper we study mixed sums of primes and linear recurrences. We show that if m=2(mod 4) and m+1 is a prime then $(m^{2^n-1}-1)/(m-1)\not=m^n+p^a$ for any n=3,4,... and prime power p^a. We also prove that if a>1 is an integer, u_0=0, u_1=1 and u_{i+1}=au_i+u_{i-1} for i=1,2,3,..., then all the sums u_m+au_n (m,n=1,2,3,...) are distinct. One of our conjectures states that any integer n>4 can be written as the sum of an odd prime, an odd Fibonacci number and a positive Fibonacci number.

Abstract:In 1920, P. A. MacMahon generalized the (classical) notion of divisor sums by relating it to the theory of partitions of integers. In this paper, we extend the idea of MacMahon. In doing so we reveal a wealth of divisibility theorems and unexpected combinatorial identities. Our initial approach is quite different from MacMahon and involves rational function approximation to MacMahon-type generating functions.
