Abstract:We prove that every additive set $A$ with energy $E(A)\ge |A|^3/K$ has a subset $A'\subseteq A$ of size $|A'|\ge (1-\varepsilon)K^{-1/2}|A|$ such that $|A'-A'|\le O_\varepsilon(K^{4}|A'|)$. This is, essentially, the largest structured set one can get in the Balog-Szemerédi-Gowers theorem.

Abstract:In this note, we prove a certain hypergraph generalization of the Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers Theorem. Our result shares some features in common with a similar such generalizsation due to Sudakov, Szemeredi and Vu, though the conclusion of our result is somewhat different.

Abstract:Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+\omega(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $\omega$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

On an entropic analogue of additive energy

Abstract:Recent advances have linked various statements involving sumsets and cardinalities with corresponding statements involving sums of random variables and entropies. In this vein, this paper shows that the quantity $2{\bf H}\{X, Y\} - {\bf H}\{X+Y\}$ is a natural entropic analogue of the additive energy $E(A,B)$ between two sets. We develop some basic theory surrounding this quantity, and demonstrate its role in the proof of Tao's entropy variant of the Balog--Szemerédi--Gowers theorem. We examine the regime where entropic additive energy is small, and discuss a family of random variables related to Sidon sets. In finite fields, one can define an entropic multiplicative energy as well, and we formulate sum-product-type conjectures relating these two entropic energies.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a finite subset of an arbitrary additive group $G$, and let $\phi(A)$ denote the cardinality of the largest subset $B$ in $A$ that is sum-avoiding in $A$ (that is to say, $b_1+b_2 \not \in A$ for all distinct $b_1,b_2 \in B$). The question of controlling the size of $A$ in terms of $\phi(A)$ in the case when $G$ was torsion-free was posed by Erdős and Moser. When $G$ has torsion, $A$ can be arbitrarily large for fixed $\phi(A)$ due to the presence of subgroups. Nevertheless, we provide a qualitative answer to an analogue of the Erdős-Moser problem in this setting, by establishing a structure theorem, which roughly speaking asserts that $A$ is either efficiently covered by $\phi(A)$ finite subgroups of $G$, or by fewer than $\phi(A)$ finite subgroups of $G$ together with a residual set of bounded cardinality. In order to avoid a large number of nested inductive arguments, our proof uses the language of nonstandard analysis. We also answer negatively a question of Erdős regarding large subsets $A$ of finite additive groups $G$ with $\phi(A)$ bounded, but give a positive result when $|G|$ is not divisible by small primes.

On the number of sets with small sumset

Abstract:We investigate subsets with small sumset in arbitrary abelian groups. For an abelian group $G$ and an $n$-element subset $Y \subseteq G$ we show that if $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, then the number of subsets $A \subseteq Y$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$ is at most \[2^{o(s)}\binom{\frac{m+\beta}{2}}{s},\] where $\beta$ is the size of the largest subgroup of $G$ of size at most $\left(1+o(1)\right)m$. This bound is sharp for $\mathbb{Z}$ and many other groups. Our result improves the one of Campos and nearly bridges the remaining gap in a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris, and Samotij. We also explore the behaviour of uniformly chosen random sets $A \subseteq \{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$. Under the same assumption that $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, we show that with high probability there exists an arithmetic progression $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ of size at most $m/2 + o(m)$ containing all but $o(s)$ elements of $A$. Analogous results are obtained for asymmetric sumsets, improving results by Campos, Coulson, Serra, and Wötzel. The main tool behind our proofs is a graph container theorem combined with a variant of an asymmetric hypergraph container theorem.

Borel sets of Rado graphs and Ramsey's Theorem

Abstract:The well-known Galvin-Prikry Theorem states that Borel subsets of the Baire space are Ramsey: Given any Borel subset $\mathcal{X}\subseteq [\omega]^{\omega}$, where $[\omega]^{\omega}$ is endowed with the metric topology, each infinite subset $X\subseteq \omega$ contains an infinite subset $Y\subseteq X$ such that $[Y]^{\omega}$ is either contained in $\mathcal{X}$ or disjoint from $\mathcal{X}$. Kechris, Pestov, and Todorcevic point out in their seminal 2005 paper the dearth of similar results for homogeneous structures. Such results are a necessary step to the larger goal of finding a correspondence between structures with infinite dimensional Ramsey properties and topological dynamics, extending their correspondence between the Ramsey property and extreme amenability. In this article, we prove an analogue of the Galvin-Prikry theorem for the Rado graph. Any such infinite dimensional Ramsey theorem is subject to constraints following from the 2006 work of Laflamme, Sauer, and Vuksanovic. The proof uses techniques developed for the author's work on the Ramsey theory of the Henson graphs as well as some new methods for fusion sequences, used to bypass the lack of a certain amalgamation property enjoyed by the Baire space.

Abstract:A subset of a group is called product-free if there is no solution to with all in . It is easy to see that the largest product-free subset of the symmetric group is obtained by taking the set of all odd permutations, i.e. , where is the alternating group. In 1985 Babai and Sós (Eur. J. Comb. 6(2):101–114, 1985) conjectured that the group also contains a product-free set of constant density. This conjecture was refuted by Gowers (whose result was subsequently improved by Eberhard), still leaving the long-standing problem of determining the largest product-free subset of wide open. We solve this problem for large , showing that the maximum size is achieved by the previously conjectured extremal examples, namely families of the form and their inverses. Moreover, we show that the maximum size is only achieved by these extremal examples, and we have stability: any product-free subset of of nearly maximum size is structurally close to an extremal example. Our proof uses a combination of tools from Combinatorics and Non-abelian Fourier Analysis, including a crucial new ingredient exploiting some recent theory developed by Filmus, Kindler, Lifshitz and Minzer for global hypercontractivity on the symmetric group.

Abstract:Let G be any additive abelian group with cyclic torsion subgroup, and let A, B and C be finite subsets of G with cardinality n > 0. We show that there is a numbering {a(i)}(n)(i=1)of the elements of A, a numbering {b(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of B and a numbering {c(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of C, such that all the sums a(i) + b(i) + c(i) (1 <= i <= n) are (pairwise) distinct. Consequently, each subcube of the Latin cube formed by the Cayley addition table of Z/NZ contains a Latin transversal. This additive theorem is an essential result which can be further extended via restricted sumsets in a field.

Abstract:Gowers and Wolf have conjectured that, given a set of linear forms $\{\psi_i\}_{i=1}^t$ each mapping $\mathbb{Z}^D$ to $\mathbb{Z}$, if $s$ is an integer such that the functions $\psi_1^{s+1},\ldots, \psi_t^{s+1}$ are linearly independent, then averages of the form $\mathbb{E}_{\boldsymbol{x}} \prod_{i=1}^t f(\psi_i(\boldsymbol{x}))$ may be controlled by the Gowers $U^{s+1}$-norm of $f$. We prove (a stronger version of) this conjecture.

Finding large additive and multiplicative Sidon sets in sets of integers

Abstract:Given $h,g \in \mathbb{N}$, we write a set $X \subset \mathbb{Z}$ to be a $B_{h}^{+}[g]$ set if for any $n \in \mathbb{Z}$, the number of solutions to the additive equation $n = x_1 + \dots + x_h$ with $x_1, \dots, x_h \in X$ is at most $g$, where we consider two such solutions to be the same if they differ only in the ordering of the summands. We define a multiplicative $B_{h}^{\times}[g]$ set analogously. In this paper, we prove, amongst other results, that there exist absolute constants $g \in \mathbb{N}$ and $\delta>0$ such that for any $h \in \mathbb{N}$ and for any finite set $A$ of integers, the largest $B_{h}^{+}[g]$ set $B$ inside $A$ and the largest $B_{h}^{\times}[g]$ set $C$ inside $A$ satisfy \[ \max \{ |B| , |C| \} \gg_{h} |A|^{(1+ \delta)/h }. \] In fact, when $h=2$, we may set $g = 31$, and when $h$ is sufficiently large, we may set $g = 1$ and $\delta \gg (\log \log h)^{1/2 - o(1)}$. The former makes progress towards a recent conjecture of Klurman--Pohoata and quantitatively strengthens previous work of Shkredov.

Abstract:A family $\mathcal{F}\subset 2^G$ of subsets of an abelian group $G$ is a Sidon system if the sumsets $A+B$ with $A,B\in \mathcal{F}$ are pairwise distinct. Cilleruelo, Serra and the author previously proved that the maximum size $F_k(n)$ of a Sidon system consisting of $k$-subsets of the first $n$ positive integers satisfies $C_k n^{k-1}\leq F_k(n) \leq \binom{n-1}{k-1}+n-k$ for some constant $C_k$ only depending on $k$. We close the gap by proving an essentially tight structural result that in particular implies $F_k(n)\geq (1-o(1))\binom{n}{k-1}$. We also use this to establish a result about the size of the largest Sidon system in the binomial random family $\binom{[n]}{k}_p$. Extensions to $h$-fold sumsets for any fixed $h\geq 3$ are also obtained.

Abstract:Let $r_k(N)$ denote the size of the largest subset of $[N] = \{1,\ldots,N\}$ with no $k$-term arithmetic progression. We show that for $k\ge 5$, there exists $c_k>0$ such that \[r_k(N)\ll N\exp(-(\log\log N)^{c_k}).\] Our proof is a consequence of recent quasipolynomial bounds on the inverse theorem for the Gowers $U^k$-norm as well as the density increment strategy of Heath-Brown and Szemer\'{e}di as reformulated by Green and Tao.

Abstract:Motivated by questions asked by Erdos, we prove that any set $A\subset{\mathbb N}$ with positive upper density contains, for any $k\in{\mathbb N}$, a sumset $B_1+\cdots+B_k$, where $B_1,\dots,B_k\subset{\mathbb N}$ are infinite. Our proof uses ergodic theory and relies on structural results for measure preserving systems. Our techniques are new, even for the previously known case of $k=2$.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A1,…,An(n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b1,…,bn be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m⩽(k−1)/(n−1) there are more than (k−1)n−(m+1)(n2) sets {a1,…,an} such that a1∈A1,…,an∈An, and both ai≠aj and mai+bi≠maj+bj (or both mai≠maj and ai+bi≠aj+bj) for all 1⩽i<j⩽n. This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.

Abstract:Many natural notions of additive and multiplicative largeness arise from results in Ramsey theory. In this paper, we explain the relationships between these notions for subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and in more general ring-theoretic structures. We show that multiplicative largeness begets additive largeness in three ways and give a collection of examples demonstrating the optimality of these results. We also give a variety of applications arising from the connection between additive and multiplicative largeness. For example, we show that given any $n, k \in \mathbb{N}$, any finite set with fewer than $n$ elements in a sufficiently large finite field can be translated so that each of its elements becomes a non-zero $k^{\text{th}}$ power. We also prove a theorem concerning Diophantine approximation along multiplicatively syndetic subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and a theorem showing that subsets of positive upper Banach density in certain multiplicative sub-semigroups of $\mathbb{N}$ of zero density contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Along the way, we develop a new characterization of upper Banach density in a wide class of amenable semigroups and make explicit the uniformity in recurrence theorems from measure theoretic and topological dynamics. This in turn leads to strengthened forms of classical theorems of Szemerédi and van der Waerden on arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:It is known that for any IP ⁎ set A and any sequence 〈xn〉n=1∞ in (N,+) , there exists a sum subsystem of 〈xn〉n=1∞ whose finite sums and finite products are in A . Similar results have been established for some other combinatorial notions. In this article, we introduce a general notion called completely I -large ⁎ sets, which can be IP ⁎ sets, central ⁎ sets or C ⁎ -sets when I is the corresponding ideal. And we establish a result for this notion to unify all known results. Furthermore, we apply this general result to another notion - quasi-central ⁎ sets to obtain corresponding combinatorial results.
