Abstract:The panoramic annular lens (PAL) is renowned for providing simultaneous vision of the panoramic space. However, its inherent central blind area is a significant drawback. In this study, we aim to harness the benefits of the PAL while mitigating its limitations by proposing a dual-channel panoramic zoom system without central blind area. The introduction of a positive front lens group for secondary imaging is a critical aspect of our design, which is guided and substantiated by our mathematical imaging model. The results from our design affirm the practicality and effectiveness of the secondary imaging. This design can achieve a zoom ratio of 1 . 46x and a maximum field of view (FoV) range of 71 degrees similar to 100 degrees , enabling zooming from front to rear. Exemplifying compactness, our system measures just 60 mm in total length, while providing a high-resolution output, as indicated by a modulation transfer function exceeding 0.3 at 200 lp/mm . With an F - Theta distortion less than 3.3%, the system maintains low levels of distortion. The analysis is instructive and the design shows potential in situations that necessitate compliance with size and resolution requirements.
An Optical Zoom System Based on Tunable Lens with Polymer Membrane and Multilayered Structure

Abstract:We have developed an optical zoom system based on tunable lens with polymer membrane and multilayered structure. The presented system employed two tunable lenses and two doublet lenses as the main refractive units. Each tunable lens had a delicately designed, solid-liquid mixed structure with multiple internal slim holes, which helped to improve the lens optical properties and stability against gravity. The optical structure and regulation principle of the zoom system is presented, as well as the detailed fabrication process of the tunable lens. Under different displacement loads, the lens deformation properties, and the adjustment ability and imaging characteristics of the zoom system were measured and analyzed. Besides, the spot diagram, field curvature and distortion of the system were simulated using the Zemax software. The magnification of the designed system could be regulated from 0.2X to 4.3X flexibly depending on the focal variation of each tunable lens.

Abstract:Holographic optical element(HOE) lens is an imaging element fabricated through recording wavefront by interference. Because of its advantages of small form factor and wavelength, angle selectivity and arbitrary wavefront formation, it has a good application prospect in augmented reality display. To make the system more compact, the HOE is set as an off-axis optical element. At the same time, due to its diffraction principle, its wavelength response is more sensitive than traditional refractive and reflective optical elements. Thus the fabrication and design of a full-color HOE lens is a challenge to optimize the free-space head-up displays system. To systematically analyze the HOE imaging system, the conjugate relation between the object and image is derived by scalar diffraction theory. Then the Gaussian conjugate imaging equation is obtained and the off-axis aberration of distortion and astigmatism in the HOE imaging systems are analyzed. In addition, A head-up display with FOV of 18°and eyebox of 10mm is simulated and its imaging process is visualized through the geometric optics method of k-vector diagram and ray-tracing. A full-color HOE lens with high diffraction efficiency was fabricated by interference. Its average peak diffraction efficiency is 56%, reaching the highest level in the world. A prototype of augmented reality system is established by combining laser pico-projectior with HOE lens. The experimental results of distortion and astigmatism effects of the system are obtained, which are consistent with the simulation results. The MTF parameters of the system are measured, and its definition basically meets the resolution requirements of the human eye. The aberration of the system is analyzed and the optimization method is proposed. To optimize the monochromatic image quality, an extra cylindrical lens is added to ensure the same optical power of meridian and sagittal plane to eliminate astigmatism. Besides, a freeform wavefront is designed by geometric construction method and form a freeform HOE to deal with the distortion problem. The local recording freeform wavefront can be calculated by the imaging equation. When full-color HOE is applied in the display system, the images of three channels may separate in the space because of their different reconstruction wavelengths and angles. We propose a pre-compensation method of in the recording process to solve this problem. If these above problems can be solved, due to its good image uniformity, sufficient field angle and eyebox area, the head-up display based on HOE lens with extra optical power will have a better application in augmented reality technology.

Abstract:This study proposes to apply the combination of two 90-degree prisms and a holographic optical element to an image-dividing element, divide an image into three through the virtual image projection system, and accurately project the images to 160 cm behind the windshield. In order to distinguish the left image, middle image, and right image at the horizontal direction, the 90-degree prism is first utilized for horizontally deflecting the light, a holographic optical element is then used for presenting the vertical deflection of the image, and finally, the images are horizontally arranged as a real image on the diffuser. An image-dividing element is eventually integrated to the virtual image projection system. Then, the divided images are made as a virtual image which is projected to 160 cm behind the windshield to combine with the street scene. The horizontal angle of view of an eyebox is increased from 2.51° to 7.22°, and the size of the eyebox is 31.68 cm × 12.48 cm, allowing a wide-view laser-based head-up display with the large-angle beam-splitting function being successfully designed. It would not affect the field of view on the road, and this system could reduce the space and be arranged easily in a vehicle. Therefore, this proposed system is suitable for the aftermarket.

Abstract:This paper proposes a design method for tilted and decentered anamorphic projection optics. In this method, the structure is designed in groups according to the magnification requirements; the anamorphic system section’s primary aberration is analyzed based on vector aberration theory, the tilted and decentered system section’s node behavior is analyzed based on node aberration theory, and spatial ray tracing is used to control the anamorphic optical system’s pupil to be elliptical to realize pupil matching between groups. A mathematical aberration balance and constraint control model is established. The node position is used as an evaluation function such that the node is close to or within the full field, thus controlling the primary aberration for the initial system over the full field. The initial system is constructed with increased optimization potential to satisfy the aberration and structural constraints. The initial structure for the tilted and decentered anamorphic projection optics ( β x = 1 / 4 , β y = 1 / 8 ) is constructed with the coma and astigmatism nodes close to or within the full field. The structure is then optimized to achieve a wavefront root-mean-square error for the EUV tilted and decentered anamorphic objective with NA= 0.55 of better than 0.025λ (λ = 13.5 nm).

Abstract:A zoom lens system is usually composed of several components. Some of the components can be moved to change the focal length or magnification. Zoom lens system design is more complicated than fixed-focus lens design due to the moving of some components. In this paper, an optimization method that is used to design zoom lens systems is presented. Using this method, the Gaussian parameters of zoom lens systems are optimized at first, and then the initial structure parameters in each component are generated and optimized. At last the aberration balance is made using multi-configuration. In this paper the flowchart of optimization design for such complex optical systems is showed and the algorithms are described. As a conclusion, the relationship between power distribution, initial structure and the aberrations is considered at the beginning, the evaluation criteria are reliable and efficiency for designing zoom lens systems.

Abstract:We present a new optical system for a combiner-type head-up display (HUD) without any asymmetrical elements by employing a confocal, off-axis, two-hyperboloid mirror as an aberration corrector. From an off-axial aberration analysis, we initially obtain an off-axis two-mirror system corrected for linear astigmatism and spherical aberration by configuring its parameters to satisfy the confocal condition. In addition, to compensate the down angle in the HUD, the image display plane is tilted to satisfy the Scheimpflug condition. This design approach enables us to easily balance the residual aberrations without asymmetrical components, which results in an excellent starting design. The final optical system for an HUD has a virtual image of 7.3 in at 2 m away from an eye box having an area of 130×50 mm2.

Abstract:Zoom system is an optical system of which the focal length can be changed continuously within a certain range, while the image plane keeps stable and the image quality remains good. Zoom system usually consists of fixed group, variable group and compensation group. However, designing a zoom system can be a complex task due to the large number of variables involved in the optical design. One of the critical challenges is to obtain an effective initial structure of the zoom system. In this paper, a design method based on Delano diagram is proposed to establish the first-order model for the initial structure of the zoom system, which describes the relationship between the zoom ratio, focal length, and other parameters. On the basis of the model, the first-order merit function of the zoom system is analyzed and derived. By controlling the merit function with the help of the algorithm optimization, the first-order solution for the initial structure of zoom system is obtained and can be used for subsequent optimization. In order to further prove the effectiveness of the initial structure, the first-order solution is converted into an actual lens according to the properties of the zoom system. After further optimization, a zoom system with good image quality is obtained, which indicates that the initial structure of the zoom system is of great optimization potential. The final result shows that the design method proposed in this paper provides a helpful approach to solving the problem in obtaining an effective initial structure of the zoom system.
Zoomable head-up display with the integration of holographic and geometrical imaging

Abstract:Head-up displays (HUDs) have already penetrated into vehicle applications and demand keeps growing. Existing head-up displays have their image fixed at a certain distance in front of the windshield. New development could have two images displayed at two different yet fixed distances simultaneously or switchable upon request. The physical distance of HUD image is associated with the accommodation delay as a safety issue in driving, and could also be a critical parameter for augmented reality (AR) function. In this paper, a novel architecture for HUD has been proposed to make the image distance continuously tunable by exploiting the merit of both holographic and geometrical imaging. Holographic imaging is capable of changing image position by varying the modulation on a spatial light modulator (SLM) without any mechanical movement. Geometrical imaging can easily magnify longitudinal image position with short depth of focus by using large aperture components. A prototype based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) SLM has demonstrated the capability of changing image position from 3 m to 30 m verified with parallax method.

Abstract:An off-axis optical system with an x-y polynomial surface for a see-through head-mounted display (HMD) is presented. With the use of an x-y polynomial surface, an off-axis see-through HMD system with one tilted spherical combiner and six relay optical lenses is designed. An off-axis see-through HMD with a 15 mm exit pupil, a 40 degrees x 30 degrees FOV, and 70 mm eye relief is achieved. Furthermore, a binocular off-axis see-through HMD prototype is fabricated and the performance of the system is experimentally tested; 972 cd/m(2) of luminance is measured at the position of the exit pupil of the HMD. A typical augmented reality image captured outdoors with the HMD prototype is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Optical zoom system plays an important role application in high precision opto-electronic imaging for the high-speed moving target imaging. The novel stabilized zoom stabilization system based on deformable mirrors(DMs) has a future application prospect in integrating fast doubling, accurate focusing, image plane stabilization and aberration compensation. In this paper, we design a reflective zoom structure including the front group and the rear group. The double DMs and the reflective mirrors form the Combined Telephoto and Reversed-Telephoto structure, which achieve the zoom of the system and correct the off-axis aberration during the whole focal length. The fixed reflective mirror in rear group is used to compress the optical length and keep the image stabilized. We make full use of effective diameter range of DMs and the flexible deformations amount of actuator strokes to achieve the freeform surfaces in the system. It achieves a high zoom ratio of 14.52 and 5 milliseconds of zooming time from Wide-angle and Telephoto. This optical system is conducive to further achieving high zoom efficiency and high speed in the stabilized zoom system based on DMs.
Three-dimensional Display with a Multi-Directional Backlight

Abstract:To realize three-dimensional(3D) images with low crosstalk, full resolution, and multi-view, a 3D display based on a multi-directional backlight is proposed. An eye-tracker in the system is used to acquire the position of human eyes and feedback to multi-directional backlight and the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel. Directional parallax images are time-sequentially provided to each eye by simultaneously working of multi-directional backlight and LCD screen. Viewers can achieve 3D perception based on the persistence of vision. Multi-directional backlight is mainly realized by a series of cylindrical waves and a holographic optical element (HOE). Different cylindrical waves produce diffracted beams in different directions through HOE. Double-LED type and diffuser type are proposed to improve the uniformity of the proposed system. Experimental results indicate that this system can provide full resolution 3D images in 25 viewing zones, and the uniformity is improved to 80% average crosstalk is as low as 2.75% , which satisfy the demands for crosstalk, resolution, uniformity in the 3D display system, and the visual experience of viewers is greatly improved.

Abstract:The traditional head-up display (HUD) system has the disadvantages of a small area and a single display plane, here we propose and design an augmented reality (AR) HUD system with multi-plane, large area, high diffraction efficiency and a single picture generation unit (PGU) based on holographic optical elements (HOEs). Since volume HOEs have excellent angle selectivity and wavelength selectivity, HOEs of different wavelengths can be designed to display images in different planes. Experimental and simulated results verify the feasibility of this method. Experimental results show that the diffraction efficiencies of the red, green and blue HOEs are 75.2%, 73.1% and 67.5%. And the size of HOEs is 20cm*15cm. Moreover, the three HOEs of red, green and blue display images at different depths of 150cm, 500cm and 1000cm, respectively. In addition, the field of view (FOV) and eye-box (EB) of the system are 12°*10° and 9.5cm*11.2cm. Furthermore, the light transmittance of the system has reached 60%. It is believed that this technique can be applied to the augmented reality navigation display of vehicles and aviation.

Abstract:Automotive head-up display (HUD), a typical application in augmented reality (AR), has gained popularity in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel design configuration of freeform off-axis three-mirror systems for automotive head-up display (HUD) application. In the configuration, the image source, the flat mirror, and the freeform mirror are allocated on the same horizontal level to guarantee a compact structure as well as to make the optical elements easy to be assembled. The whole design philosophy and procedure, including the analytic method to determine initial structure, structure constraints, and optimization strategy, are demonstrated in detail. Superior optical performance is achieved regardless of the pupil being located at any position inside a rectangular eye box.

Abstract:Driven by the rapid innovation of science and technology and industrial manufacturing technology, virtual reality display technology has developed rapidly. At present, the application of virtual reality display technology is expanding in many fields such as military, medical, aviation and education. This paper analyzes the imaging principle of the human vision system and the optical performance requirements of VR heads-up display, summarizes the current design scheme of VR heads-up optical imaging system, focuses on the principle and index parameters of each optical system, and compares the advantages and disadvantages of different schemes. The development prospects and directions of virtual reality headset displays are also prospected.

Abstract:A new method to design a see-through off-axis head-mounted-display (OA-HMD) optical system with an ellipsoidal surface is proposed, in which a tilted ellipsoidal surface is used as the combiner, which yields the benefits of easier fabrication and testing compared to a freeform surface. Moreover, we realize a coaxial structure in the relay lens group, which is simple and has looser tolerance requirements, thus making assembly easier. The OA-HMD optical system we realize has a simple structure and consists of a combiner and 7 pieces of coaxial relay lenses. It has a 48° × 36° field of view (FOV) and 12-mm exit pupil diameter.

Off-axis Zoom Optical Systems Based on Mirror Rotation and Their Design Method

Abstract:This paper proposes a type of off-axis zoom optical system, achieving zoom through the rotation of one mirror. These systems have two different operating states, where one state has a shorter focal length and a larger field of view, and the other with the opposite. Switching between the two states is accomplished by simply rotating one mirror by a small angle. In contrast to the traditional method of simultaneously controlling the axial translation and rotation of the mirrors to achieve zoom, these systems only require a small rotation of the third mirror to achieve zoom, which is advantageous for reducing the system's control difficulty. In addition, a method for the design of this type of system is presented and used to design an off-axis zoom imaging optical system incorporating three freeform mirrors. The system has an entrance pupil diameter of 20 mm, a focal length of 200 mm in the long focal state, a focal length of 100 mm in the short focal state, and a zoom ratio of 2 times. The system requires only a 2.93 degrees rotation of the third mirror to switch between the two states. The final system illustrates excellent imaging performance close to the diffraction limit in the visible light wavelength range.
