Abstract:Within the last decade, deceased organ donation and transplantation in China have made great progress, but there is still much room for improvement. Inefficient communication with the family of potential organ and tissue donors is one of the major reasons for donor loss. In this study, the current progress of the deceased organ donation program in China was summarized, with a particular focus on the analysis of problems and solutions for achieving best practices in communication with the family of potential organ and tissue donors.This paper is in compliance with the Helsinki Congress and the Declaration of Istanbul.

Abstract:Great sadness and deep affection marked the recent passing of Professor and Dr Shu Dong Xiao, a renowned and respected gastroenterologist, the emeritus director of Shanghai Institute of Digestive Disease and the emeritus professor of Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who had dedicated his whole life to the academic and clinical study of digestive diseases. Professor Xiao died from cardiopulmonary failure on 22 July 2016 at the age of 85. Professor Xiao was born in 1931 in Huangpi city, Hubei Province, China. Abstract:Dr. Jingzhu Zhao served as the Editor-In-Chief of the International Journal of Sustainable Development and World Ecology from 2010 to 2021. He was faithful to this journal and focused on editorial work during his tenure. His broad vision of sustainable development, sweeping views on ecological research, and strenuous efforts ensured the journal's success. Prof. Zhao suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis for 15 years, but the constant pain did not prevent him from working hard. Even when diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of June 2021, he kept up with his editorial duties for three more weeks. On 4 August 2021, Dr. Zhao passed away in Beijing, leaving all who knew him greatly saddened.

Abstract:Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a syndrome in which acute liver failure with extrahepatic organ failure occurs on chronic liver disease. Recently, liver transplantation is the only effective treatment for ACLF. There is still room for discussion on the optimal surgery timing for ACLF, perioperative infection prevention and control, and maintenance of nutrition and organ function. The Transplantation Immunology Committee of Branch of Organ Transplantation Physician of Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Enhanced Recovery of Liver Transplantation Group of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Committee of Chinese Research Hospital Association invited relevant experts to discuss the perioperative management of ACLF liver transplantation in areas including surgery timing, organ protection, nutritional support, infection prevention and control, rehabilitation exercises, regulation of the internal environment, etc. An expert consensus was developed as reference for clinicians. Abstract:Abstract Professor Li Ao was one of the founders of Chinese burn medicine and one of the most renowned doctors and researchers of burns in China. He established one of the Chinese earliest special departments for burns at Third Military Medical University (TMMU) in 1958. To memorialize Professor Li Ao on his 100th birthday in 2017 and introduce our extensive experience, it is our honor to briefly review the development and achievement of the Chinese burn medicine from TMMU. The epidemiology and outcomes of admitted burn patients since 1958 were reviewed. Furthermore, main achievements of basic and clinical research for the past roughly 60 years were presented. These achievements mainly included the Chinese Rule of Nine, fluid resuscitation protocol, experience in inhalation injury, wound treatment strategies, prevention and treatment of burn infections, nutrition therapy, organ support therapies, and rehabilitation. The progress shaped and enriched modern Chinese burn medicine and promoted the development of world burn medicine.

Abstract:Wu Mengchao had been engaged in basic and clinical research in hepatobiliary surgery since the 1950s and is recognised as the founder and pioneer of hepatobiliary surgery in China. In his career of over 60 years, Wu performed over 16,000 operations and made numerous breakthroughs in hepatobiliary surgery, liver cancer signal transduction, immunotherapy and molecular pathology research. Wu's series of achievements have driven the innovative development of basic theoretical research on the liver in China, establishing it as a long-term international leader in the field of hepatobiliary surgery. This biography elucidates Wu's outstanding contributions to the establishment and development of Chinese hepatobiliary surgery.

Dr. Allwood joined the JTD Editorial Board this year and immediately began work as a co-editor for a forthcoming Special Issue on Inequalities, Intersectionality, and Dissociation. It was my privilege and a genuine pleasure to bring Dr. Allwood into the ISST-D family after her 20 years of groundbreaking work as a clinical scholar, translational research scientist, educator, therapist in practice, and advocate, spanning the fields of youth development and traumatic stress, trauma-informed approaches to juvenile justice and prevention services, and the intersection of historical, racial, ethnic identity-based, and intergenerational trauma, hate crimes, and violence.

Abstract:It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Hai-yan Wang on 11 December 2014 at the age of 77. Behind this internationally renowned name was a woman of great will, enthusiasm, and outstanding intelligence. She became one of the very few who helped give birth, growth, and strength to modern nephrology in China. Hai-yan Wang was born on 8 July 1937 in Qing-dao, Shan-dong Province, China. She graduated from Beijing Medical College in 1959 and started her career as a nephrologist under the mentorship of the late Professor Shu-xian Wang, founder of modern nephrology in China. From 1980 to 1983, she was a pioneering visiting scholar, under the supervision of Professor R. Glassock and Professor W. Border at the University of California, Los Angeles. Hai-yan was a lifelong tenured professor of medicine at Peking University First Hospital and president of the Peking University Institute of Nephrology. She was a well-known leading physician-scientist, recognizing the heterogeneity of various causes of intrinsic acute renal failure and improving the concept of primary glomerulonephritis in China in the 1980s. At the same time, her work in establishing a clinical database and biobank on various kidney diseases played a fundamental role in future translational studies. Aside from these successes, she launched clinical epidemiology in China involving chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury. Not only did she build one of the most successful renal programs at Peking University First Hospital, but she also trained many nephrologists throughout the country. In 2013, she was awarded the International Society of Nephrology Roscoe R. Robinson Award and the first ISN Pioneer in Nephrology Award for her outstanding contributions to nephrology education and the development of modern nephrology in China. Professor Hai-yan Wang was very active in the academic area of national and international nephrology as well as internal medicine. She served as Council member of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) (2004–2008), ISN executive councilor (2006–2008), and chair of the ISN East Asia Committee (2004–2013) and was a member of the ISN 0by25 advisory group. She was vice president of the Chinese Medical Association (1999–2009), president of the Chinese Society of Internal Medicine (2000–2008), and president of the Chinese Society of Nephrology (1992–1998). Hai-yan Wang: a name, a woman, and a history. Her legacy will continue to guide the development of nephrology in China and worldwide.

Abstract:Prof. Wang Weiqi passed away on 26 August 2022, in Shanghai, China, at the age of 83 due to a heart attack. He will be remembered as a pioneer of biomedical ultrasonics in China, a highly respected colleague in the ultrasound research community, and an influential role model of perseverance, dedication, and excellence for students and academic peers at Fudan University, Shanghai, his alma mater and academic home since 1956.
