Abstract:THz-time domain spectroscopy is an effective method of label-free molecular detection, but it is limited by the size of the measured samples. Traditional detection approaches will have to overcome challenges when the analyte are in trace amounts. Here, we propose an enhanced mechanism for terahertz molecular fingerprint sensing, involving an all-dielectric metasurface. Based on incident wave angle scanning under light polarization, the broadband light–matter interaction is effectively enhanced, significantly improving the fingerprint signal of the molecule to be detected. The results demonstrate a new method for trace molecular detection in the terahertz region and large-scale molecular screening.

Abstract:Due to the unique fingerprint spectra of many bio-molecules in the terahertz range, their detection in this frequency band has gained widespread attention. However, in practical applications, there are still many difficulties in effectively measuring the spectra of trace analyte samples. This study demonstrates the enhancement of terahertz absorption spectra in bio-molecular materials by utilizing a metal groove array in geometry parameters multiplexing and the relationship between the enhancement characteristics and the thickness of the sample as well as the number of structural grooves. The results indicate that the absorption enhancement factor for a 0.1-μm-thick lactose sample is approximately 120 times. This design offers a better method for detecting bio-molecular materials.

Abstract:Although terahertz (THz) spectroscopy demonstrates great application prospects in the fields of fingerprint sensing and detection, traditional sensing schemes face unavoidable limitations in the analysis of trace-amount samples. In this Letter, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, absorption spectroscopy enhancement strategy based on a defect one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D-PC) structure is proposed to achieve strong wideband terahertz wave–matter interactions for trace-amount samples. Based on the Fabry–Pérot resonance effect, the local electric field in a thin-film sample can be boosted by changing the length of the photonic crystal defect cavity, so that the wideband signal of the sample fingerprint can be greatly enhanced. This method exhibits a great absorption enhancement factor, of about 55 times, in a wide terahertz frequency range, facilitating the identification of different samples, such as thin α-lactose films. The investigation reported in this Letter provides a new research idea for enhancing the wide terahertz absorption spectroscopy of trace samples.

Vertical Interface Augmented Tunability of Scattering Spectra in Ferromagnetic Microwire/silicone Rubber Metacomposites

Abstract:Previously, we have demonstrated a viable approach based on microstructural and topological modulation of periodically arranged elements to program wave scattering in ferromagnetic glass-coated microwire metacomposites. In order to fully exploit the intrinsic structure of the composite, here, we implement the concept of composites plainification by an in-built vertical interface on randomly dispersed short-cut microwires allowing the adjustment of electromagnetic properties to a larger extent. Such interface was modified through arranging wires with different internal structures in two separated regions and by alternating these regions through wire concentration variations associated with polarization differences across the interface. When the wire concentration was equal in both regions, two well-defined transmission windows with varied amplitude and bandwidth were generated. Wire concentration fluctuations resulted in strong scattering changes ranging from broad passbands to pronounced stopbands, demonstrating the intimate relationship between wire content and space charge variations at the interface. This provides a new method to rationally exploit interfacial effects and microstructural features of microwire metacomposites. Moreover, the advantages of enabling tunable scattering spectra by merely 0.053 vol.% of fillers and simple structure make the proposed plainification strategy instrumental to designing filters with broadband frequency selectivity.

Abstract:Terahertz spectroscopy is a powerful tool to resolve molecular fingerprints by detecting their vibrational and rotational modes, and has great application potential in chemistry and biomedicine. However, the limited sensitivity and poor specificity restrict its applications in these areas, where trace amounts of analytes need to be identified effectively and accurately. Here, we propose a sensing scheme for enhancing molecular fingerprints based on angle-scanning of terahertz waves on an all-silicon metasurface. The metasurface consists of a periodic array of silicon cylinder dimers arranged in a square lattice. An ultrasharp guided mode resonance governed by bound states in the continuum can be excited by elaborately arranging the silicon cylinder dimers. By utilizing the angle-scanning strategy, two kinds of saccharides are successfully identified with extremely high sensitivity. Specifically, the detection limits for lactose and glucose are 1.53 μg cm −2 and 1.54 μg cm −2 , respectively. Our study will provide a new idea for the detection of trace amounts of analytes, and promote the application of terahertz technology in chemistry and biomedicine.

Abstract:Speedy and selective detection of sensing targets is of great interest to researchers from diverse fields. Dominated by excitations of intramolecular and intermolecular vibrations, the emerging terahertz (THz) spectroscopy offers both molecular fingerprint information and biosensing abilities, which is excellent for speedy and selective sensing applications. In this review, we focus on THz selective sensing principles and introduce three frequently utilized methods enabled by THz fingerprints, the interaction between THz absorption of molecules and plasmonic resonances, and THz metamaterial biosensors. The recent progress of THz selective sensing implementations including detections of gas molecules, solid molecules, protein, nucleic acid, cells, and viruses are also summarized. We note that current THz sensing research is multidisciplinary and has led cross-disciplinary collaborations between physics and bioscience. The acceleration of THz selective sensing will realize plenty practical THz applications and achieve outstanding improvements.

Abstract:Terahertz detection technology has been confronted with formidable impediments, notably the paucity of sensitivity and operating temperature for photodetectors based on traditional bulk materials. In an attempt to surmount the difficulties, we propose an innovative terahertz detector based on a PtSe2 (type-II Dirac semimetallic material) integrated asymmetric antenna structure that can enhance the terahertz photoresponse by capitalizing on meticulous fabrication procedures. Experimental outcomes demonstrate the remarkable characteristics of the photodetector in the terahertz band, encompassing fast response time (7 µs), large responsivity (3.267 A/W), and low noise equivalent power (3.96 pW/Hz0.5). These accomplishments can be ascribed to the incorporation of the asymmetric metal contact of the four-leaf clover antenna structure and the excellent thermoelectric characteristics of PtSe2. This pioneering investigation consequently unveils a novel methodology for the creation of proficient PtSe2-based terahertz detectors and serves as a catalyst for the promotion of applications and further research within the terahertz sphere.

Abstract:The long-wave infrared spectrum's unique advantages in molecular fingerprinting and atmospheric transmission have led to its widespread application in detection, identification, medical diagnosis, and environmental monitoring. Consequently, there has been a strong focus on developing multispectral structure arrays with high transmission efficiency. In this study, we introduce a high-transmission-efficiency nanocoaxes field enhancement structures array based on complex nanogap engineering, exhibiting a transmission of 21.59 % within an open area of 3 % and accompanied by a 90-fold enhancement of the nanogap field. With the modulation of nanogaps, the absolute transmission can exceed 60 %. The experimental data and finite element simulation results of the spectrally tunable array confirm that the origin of resonance is attributed to the enhanced localized electromagnetic modes supported by nanogaps. Furthermore, we demonstrated the proposed nanocoaxes field- enhancement structures in practical applications such as molecular resonance absorption enhancement and material composition analysis. Our work not only provides a method for on-chip multispectral tuning in the long- wave infrared range but also contributes to further advancing the development of long-wave infrared nanophotonic structures.
Terahertz Fingerprint Metasurface Sensor Based on Temperature Variation for Trace Molecules

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has demonstrated significant potential for substance detection due to its low destructiveness and due to the abundance of molecular fingerprint absorption signatures that it contains. However, there is limited research on the fingerprint detection of substances at different temperatures. Here, we propose a THz metamaterial slit array sensor that exploits localized surface plasmons to enhance the electric field within the slit. The transmission peak frequency can be modulated via temperature adjustments. This method enables the detection of molecular absorption characteristics at multiple spectral frequency points, thereby achieving a specific and highly sensitive detection of characteristic analyte fingerprint spectra. Additionally, the sensor supports the detection of substances at multiple temperatures and sensitively identifies changes in their absorption properties as a function of temperature. Our research has employed temperature variation to achieve a highly sensitive and specific detection of trace analytes, offering a new solution for THz molecular detection.

Abstract:Terahertz metamaterial sensing (TMS) is a new interdisciplinary technology. A TMS system employs terahertz waves as the pumping source, these then interact with the sample and carry the substance information, e.g., refractive index, absorption spectra. These properties are relevant to the molecular rotation and vibration states produced by a surface‐plasmon‐polariton‐like effect. TMS technology is usually characterized by large penetration depth and high sensitivity. Owing to these advantages, TMS may be used for ultratrace detection and consequently has a wide range of practical applications in biomedicine, food safety, environmental monitoring, industry and agriculture, material characterization, and safety inspection. Furthermore, TMS performance is determined not only by the structural topology of metamaterials, but also by their compositions and substrates. This paper reviews the essential fundamentals, relevant applications, and recent advances in TMS technology with a focus on the influence of material selection on TMS performance. This review is envisaged to be used as a key reference for developing TMS‐based functional devices with enhanced characteristics. Terahertz metamaterial sensing (TMS) may be used for ultratrace detection, implying a wide range of applications. A Terahertz Signal Enhancement Implemented by Subwavelength Metallic Grooves

Abstract:This research analyzes the field enhancement properties of a subwavelength metallic groove working at 0.4 terahertz (THz), which is potentially applicable as a receiver to enhance THz signals in integrated circuits. We derive the analytic formulation of the field magnification by utilizing the distinctive characteristics of the electromagnetic (EM) field inside and above the groove with the EM field continuity on the upper and lower surfaces of the groove. This method, known as the Bruijn theory, has been applied in acoustics and optics to obtain reflection and absorption coefficients. Then, the dependence of these field enhancement properties on both the groove width and depth is examined by theoretical analysis and numerical simulations consistently. Results show that the field enhancement varies periodically with the groove depth in a period of 0.5λ, featuring the typical Fabry–Perot resonance. The field enhancement is inversely proportional to the groove width due to the cavity effect. Besides, the field intensity can be further enhanced by 10% via appropriately rounding the sharp vertices at the inlet of the groove. Moreover, the incident angle effect on the field enhancing property is explored. An enhancement of >32 dB can be realized at any incident angle with a groove of dimensions 158×225μm2. These results are helpful for understanding the field enhancement mechanism and designing novel THz plasmonic devices, such as an easily manufactured antenna receiver or sensor with simple and compact configuration, as well as offering a feasible solution for the high attenuation problem of THz communications.
Local Terahertz Field Enhancement for Time-Resolved X-ray Diffraction

Abstract:We report local field strength enhancement of single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses in an ultrafast time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiment. We show that patterning the sample with gold microstructures increases the THz field without changing the THz pulse shape or drastically affecting the quality of the x-ray diffraction pattern. We find a five-fold increase in THz-induced x-ray diffraction intensity change in the presence of microstructures on a SrTiO3 thin-film sample.

Abstract:Recently, terahertz spectroscopy has received a lot of attention because of its unique properties such as biosafety, fingerprint spectrum, and good penetration. In this review, we focus on the research progress of terahertz spectroscopic techniques for the detection and recognition of substances. First, we describe the fundamentals of terahertz spectroscopy. Then, we outline the applications of terahertz spectroscopy in biomedicine, agriculture, food production, and security inspection. Subsequently, metamaterials, which have recently received extensive attention, are also investigated for the applications in terahertz spectroscopic detection and recognition of substances is illustrated. Finally, the development trend of terahertz spectroscopy for substance detection and recognition is also prospected.

Unveiling the Terahertz Nano-Fingerprint Spectrum of Single Artificial Metallic Resonator

Abstract:As artificially engineered subwavelength periodic structures, terahertz (THz) metasurface devices exhibit an equivalent dielectric constant and dispersion relation akin to those of natural materials with specific THz absorption peaks, describable using the Lorentz model. Traditional verification methods typically involve testing structural arrays using reflected and transmitted optical paths. However, directly detecting the dielectric constant of individual units has remained a significant challenge. In this study, we employed a THz time-domain spectrometer-based scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (THz-TDS s-SNOM) to investigate the near-field nanoscale spectrum and resonant mode distribution of a single-metal double-gap split-ring resonator (DSRR) and rectangular antenna. The findings reveal that they exhibit a dispersion relation similar to that of natural materials in specific polarization directions, indicating that units of THz metasurface can be analogous to those of molecular structures in materials. This microscopic analysis of the dispersion relation of artificial structures offers new insights into the working mechanisms of THz metasurfaces.

Abstract:Terahertz spectroscopy has become a powerful tool in physical, chemical and biological researches. Traditional terahertz spectroscopic techniques can be divided into six categories, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, time-domain spectroscopy, directly tuning frequency, heterodyne mixing/photomixing, dispersive optics and narrowband filter array. In this work, we will first give an overview on the principle, performance characteristics and applications of these techniques. It will be concluded that they have certain limitations in terms of applicability, measurement speed, etc., especially for the investigation of terahertz radiation sources, where there is a lack of convenient, compact and low-cost direct measurement and characterization method of the emission spectrum. Then we will envisage and discuss a concept of computational terahertz spectrometer.

Abstract:Non-diffraction electromagnetic beams such as Airy beams attract wide exploration in various disciplines owing to its fascinating features and great potential of applications. Although generation and applications of Airy beams are actively studied in the optical regime, applications of Airy beams in the THz or sub-THz domain are rarely explored. This work proposes a new microscopic technique leveraging a sub-THz broadband non-diffraction Airy beam as the illumination beam to improve the image quality, which is named as enhanced sub-THz microscopy (ESTM). The effectiveness of the ESTM is validated by a metallic sample, which shows that applying broadband measured information can render a better image quality than only using single-frequency information. By blocking the sample using a scattering obstacle, it is demonstrated that the self-reconstruction property of the Airy beam can efficiently suppress the distortion induced by the obstacle and good images can still be obtained. In addition, it is shown that the image quality applying a broadband Airy beam is superior to that of non-diffraction quasi-Bessel beams and other conventionally used illumination beams for microscopic technique.
