Abstract:Dual-comb based hyperspectral imaging (DCHI) offers outstanding advantages for ultra- precise spectral analysis. In this work, we present and demonstrate terahertz (THz) hyperspectral imaging using a photonic swept-frequency dual-comb THz source, which combines frequency-modulated continuous waves (FMCW) with dual electro-optic combs. The proposed innovative approach can overcome the typical trade-off between spectral bandwidth and frequency resolution in traditional dual-comb imaging systems, impressively achieving a frequency resolution of 50 MHz within a flexible spectral bandwidth of 220-320 GHz for non-destructive imaging diagnostics.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) technology is now drawing increasing attention around the world; it has been considered as an efficient non-destructive, non-contact and label-free optical method for biological detection. In this field, nanomaterials and nanostructures have been constantly advancing the development of THz technology. Here, we proposed some latest applications of nanotechnology to improve THz biological detection capability for providing progressive THz systems, thus enabling outstanding detection performance utilizing THz spectroscopy and imaging; these will encourage broader interest in various fields. The uniqueness, limitations, and future prospects of THz biological applications based on nanomaterials and nanostructures will also be reviewed in light of recent developments.

Abstract:Nowadays with the growing threat of terrorist attacks throughout the world, effective security technologies are of urgent need to protect crowds and critical infrastructure. Terahertz wave has emerged as a more powerful tool in security. Terahertz wave is able to penetrate dielectrics such as plastic and cloth so as to detect weapons and contraband hidden under people's clothing without harming human bodies. Nevertheless, image obtained in this frequency range is pretty poor because the diffraction at their relatively long wavelength cannot be ignored in such case. In this paper, we shall briefly introduce the high-resolution (HR) reconstruction for terahertz imaging utilizing the ideology and methodology of super-resolution (SR) restoration in image processing which aims at recovering a high-resolution image from a single low-resolution image. Through the preliminary feasibility research, we applied the image super-resolution algorithm based on the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to the single passive terahertz image reconstruction. Our deep CNN demonstrates state-of-the-art restoration quality and achieve fast speed as well. Our results indicate that the processed passive terahertz images have clearer edges as well as outlines and are easier to identify suspicious items than the original ones. On the whole, our method outperforms other methods such as the interpolation method and the learning-based image super-resolution reconstruction algorithm. The results indicate a promising prospect for HR terahertz imaging reconstruction.

Abstract:Owing to the distinctive optical and electromagnetic properties of terahertz waves, terahertz imaging technology finds widespread application in security inspections, nondestructive testing, and various other domains. Nevertheless, its fixed long-wavelength and scattering properties contribute to the degradation of image resolution. This letter introduces a complex-valued network augmented with wavelet and attention mechanisms for terahertz image super resolution. In the context of multiscale feature extraction within the network, we introduce a wavelet transformation module. Additionally, we have incorporated a multi-head attention mechanism into the network, enabling the model to focus on more salient feature information. To further enhance the computational efficiency of complex convolutional neural networks, utilizing the Gaussian complex multiplication principle has led to the simplification of intricate convolutional network layers, resulting in a reduction of computational load by 25. During the model training process, we have incorporated a simulated annealing algorithm to dynamically adjust the network parameters, aiming to elucidate an optimal parameter configuration. The results from both simulated experiments and laboratory experiments demonstrate that the proposed method substantially enhances the quality of THz images. The average resolution reaches 36.7 dB on the peak signal-to-noise ratio index and 0.98 on the structural similarity index.

Abstract:Due to the unique characteristics of terahertz (THz) waves, such as low-energy, penetrating, and broadband, THz imaging has been regarded as cutting-edge technology in many fields. As the demand for technology grows, high-performance THz imaging systems are becoming indispensable. The ability of THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system to extract spectra from amplitude and phase information opens virtually unlimited possibilities for imaging applications. In this review, the main performance achievements of THz-TDS imaging were displayed. The researches on fast imaging components for solving the existing deficiency of imaging speed of THz-TDS were summarized. Besides, the latest developments of several THz-TDS-based imaging methods, including tomography imaging and near-field imaging were highlighted, and an outlook on the performance improvement was presented.

Abstract:There are numerous applications of terahertz (THz) imaging in many fields. However, current THz imaging is generally based on scanning technique due to the limited intensity of the THz sources. Thus, it takes a long time to obtain a frame image of the target and cannot meet the requirement of fast THz imaging. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot direct THz imaging strategy based on a broadband intense THz source with a frequency range of 0.1~23 THz and a THz camera with a frequency response range of 1~7 THz. This THz source was generated from the laser‒plasma interaction, with its central frequency at ~12 THz. The frame rate of this imaging system was 8.5 frames per second. The imaging resolution reached 146.2 μm. With this imaging system, a single-shot THz image for a target object with a size of more than 7 cm was routinely obtained, showing a potential application for fast THz imaging. Furthermore, we proposed and tested an image enhancement algorithm based on an improved dark channel prior (DCP) theory and multi-scale retinex (MSR) theory to optimize the image brightness, contrast, entropy and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

Terahertz imaging super-resolution for documental heritage diagnostics

Abstract:Terahertz imaging provides valuable insights into the composition and structure of objects or materials, with applications spanning security screening, medical imaging, materials science, and cultural heritage preservation. Despite its widespread utility, traditional terahertz imaging is limited in spatial resolution to approximately 1 mm according to Abbe's formula. In this paper, we propose a novel super-resolution method for terahertz time-domain spectroscopy systems. Our approach involves spatial filtering through scattering in the far-field of high spatial frequency components of the imaged sample. This method leverages evanescent wave filtering using a knife edge, akin to a standard structured illumination scheme. We demonstrate improved spatial resolution in slit diffraction, edge imaging, and reflection imaging of structures fabricated on a paper substrate using commonly encountered materials in works of art and documents. Furthermore, we present super-resolved images of an ancient document on parchment, showcasing the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) imaging technology has shown powerful potential for applications in biological sensing due to characteristics of the THz radiation. However, the measurement accuracy is always restricted by the low spatial resolution of THz imaging. In this work, a THz microscopy based on a cross-filament was utilized to inspect different biological tissues. A quasi sub-wavelength resolution was realized without approaching the sampe surface with any actual devices. By using the technique, fine tissue structures of two plant leaves and two animal bodies were precisely identified and analyzed from their temporal, spectral, and absorption images. Furthermore, possible optimization solutions were also discussed in detail for enhancing the imaging performance. This work demonstrated a novel and practical inspection method for pushing the development of THz biological applications.

Abstract:A prototype of terahertz imaging system has been built in CSIRO. This imager uses a backward wave oscillator as the source and a Schottky diode as the detector. It has a bandwidth of 500-700 GHz and a source power 10 mW. The resolution at 6 10 GHz is about 0.85 mm. Even though this imaging system is a coherent system, only the signal power is measured at the detector and the phase information of the detected wave is lost. Some initial images of tree leaves, chocolate bars and pinholes have been acquired with this system. In this paper, we report experimental results of an attempt to improve the resolution of this imaging system beyond the limitation of diffraction (super-resolution). Due to the lack of phase information needed for applying any coherent super-resolution algorithms, the performance of the incoherent Richardson-Lucy super-resolution algorithm has been evaluated. Experimental results have demonstrated that the Richardson-Lucy algorithm can significantly improve the resolution of these images in some sample areas and produce some artifacts in other areas. These experimental results are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultrahigh resolution terahertz (THz) range sensing system by digitally synthesizing multiple-hand linear frequency-modulated (LFM) pulses. In the experiment, two-band LFM pulses with 20-GHz bandwidth in the THz band are photonically generated based on frequency-to-time mapping, resulting in a synthetic LFM signal with 40-GHz bandwidth operating within the 315-360 GHz. As a benefit, a range resolution as high as 3.9 mm over more than 2 m is successfully achieved in multi-target ranging. The proposed technology not only releases the requirements for instantaneous bandwidth and sampling rate but also breaks the bandwidth limitation of THz receiver in enabling ultrahigh resolution in the THz region.

Abstract:Abstract Many exciting terahertz imaging applications, such as non-destructive evaluation, biomedical diagnosis, and security screening, have been historically limited in practical usage due to the raster-scanning requirement of imaging systems, which impose very low imaging speeds. However, recent advancements in terahertz imaging systems have greatly increased the imaging throughput and brought the promising potential of terahertz radiation from research laboratories closer to real-world applications. Here, we review the development of terahertz imaging technologies from both hardware and computational imaging perspectives. We introduce and compare different types of hardware enabling frequency-domain and time-domain imaging using various thermal, photon, and field image sensor arrays. We discuss how different imaging hardware and computational imaging algorithms provide opportunities for capturing time-of-flight, spectroscopic, phase, and intensity image data at high throughputs. Furthermore, the new prospects and challenges for the development of future high-throughput terahertz imaging systems are briefly introduced.

Abstract:In this work, an alternative method is proposed to realize terahertz far-field super-resolution imaging. Due the unique dispersive properties of the spoof surface plasmon (SSP), the spatial spectrum of the targets can be extracted and conserved by the adjacent SSP structure through a frequency canning operation. With the assist of a broadband coupler, the sampled information can be sent and retrieved in the far-filed. Then, the image with subwavelength resolution is constructed by inverse Fourier Transform. Although the resolution of 0.1 lambda is verified, the resolution can be further enhanced by optimizing the SSP structure. This work may find applications in non-destructive testing and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) employs sub-picosecond pulses to probe dielectric properties of materials giving as a result a 3-dimensional hyperspectral data cube. The spatial resolution of THz images is primarily limited by two sources: a non-zero THz beam waist and the acquisition step size. Acquisition with a small step size allows for the visualisation of smaller details in images at the expense of acquisition time, but the frequency-dependent point-spread function remains the biggest bottleneck for THz imaging. This work presents a super-resolution approach to restore THz time-domain images acquired with medium-to-big step sizes. The results show the optimized and robust performance for different frequency bands (from 0.5 to 3.5 THz) obtaining higher resolution and additionally removing effects of blur at lower frequencies and noise at higher frequencies.
