Furthermore, the review discusses the challenges and future directions in the field, emphasizing the need for scalable production, real-world application testing, and environmental impact assessment. Abstract:Two new mixed-valence uranium oxide hydrate frameworks (UOFs), incorporating either Er 3+ or Y 3+ ions, were successfully synthesised under hydrothermal conditions and characterised with single-crystal X-ray diffraction and a variety of other structural and spectroscopic techniques. Both frameworks are isostructural and crystallise in the triclinic P -1 space group, consisting of β-U 3 O 8 type layers pillared by additional uranyl centres, with the Er 3+ /Y 3+ ions lying in the channels of the framework. SEM-EDS analysis found that both materials existed in plate-like morphologies, with a U:Er/Y ratio of 5.5. Bond valence sum analysis revealed the possible existence of pentavalent uranium centres, which was confirmed with diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Being the first reported UOFs in this space group, this work highlights the complex and flexible nature of these materials, and the broader uranium oxide hydrate systems which exists in the surrounds of spent nuclear fuel disposal in the underground repository.

Abstract:The intricate balance between reactor economics and safety necessitates the emergence of new and advanced nuclear systems and, very importantly, advanced materials, which can overcome current shortcomings and bring about more economic nuclear systems with designed-in inherent safety features. These advances will achieve greater safety and better nuclear reactor economics by reaching longer reactor lives with higher levels neutron irradiation, and by providing higher operation temperatures and resistance to more aggressive corrosive environments. This paper provides a review of the current state of research and development on innovative nuclear fuel materials design and development which have the potential of benefiting simultaneously reactor economics and safety. Our discussion focuses on three areas of research: Accident-tolerant Fuels (ATFs), Oxidation Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steels and High Entropy Alloys (HEAs). The paper also gives a prospective description of future research activities on these materials.

Abstract:Uranium is a nuclear contaminant possessing radioactivity and chemical toxicity. It can be discharged into the environment from multiple sources such as uranium ore mining and hydrometallurgy, used nuclear fuel disposal and nuclear accidents. Uranium could be a growing threat to human survival and biodiversity if it is released into the environment without treatment. As one of the treatment technologies, uranium adsorption, therefore, has become an important research area. The traditional eco-friendly hydroxyapatite (HAP) and emerging Mxenes have been proved to serve as potentially ideal adsorbents for uranium while there is no review about their uranium adsorption. In this paper, recent research status of HAP and MXenes as uranium adsorbents is overviewed. Uranium adsorption capacity, adsorption influencing factors, and interaction mechanisms of these two types of materials are discussed. In addition, MXenes are a new type of two-dimensional materials, and their synthesis methods are constantly updated. Thus, the latest progress of the preparation methods of MXenes is reviewed in detail. Furthermore, we have pointed out some challenges in their use for uranium adsorption and suggested possible future research directions.

Abstract:Although barium(II) ions play an important role in the natural weathering of the mineral uraninite (UO 2+x ) and are expected to therefore do the same for spent nuclear fuel in geological disposal, the detailed structural understanding of this role is rather limited. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterisation of two new uranium oxide hydrate (UOH) phases with barium(II) ions, a layer-structured UOH-Ba1 constructed with undulating uranyl oxide hydroxide layers incorporating hydrated interlayer barium(II) ions; and UOH-Ba2 forming a complex three-dimensional structure by linking six different types of uranium polyhedrons with barium(II) ions located in the narrow channels. Both crystal structures were revealed using synchrotron single crystal X-ray diffraction and confirmed with powder X-ray or electron diffractions. While vibrational modes were elucidated by Raman, electronic structures and the presence of pentavalent uranium were investigated using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. This work has provided insights into the complexity of uranium crystal chemistry in the presence of barium(II) ions and has implications to both uranium geochemistry in terms of the natural weathering of uraninite and the disposal of spent nuclear fuel in the underground repository.

Abstract:Nuclear energy has been regarded as one of the promising energy sources to replace traditional fossil fuels due to its advantages of high energy density and carbon-free emission. Unfortunately, the limited storage of uranium ore restricted the sustainable development of nuclear energy, together with the generation of uranium-containing wastewater resulting in the problems of environmental pollution. Therefore, extracting and recycling uranium from seawater and radioactive uranium-containing wastewater is necessary for the sustainable development of nuclear energy and environmental protection. The light-driven heterogeneous photocatalytic technology is an appealing strategy to significantly promote the kinetics, capacity, and selectivity during uranium extraction. However, the recovery of uranium from radioactive wastewater/seawater is restricted by various factors, such as abundant competing ions, low uranium concentration, coexisting organic matter, and strong acidity or alkalinity in special environmental in the process of practical application. In this review, we described the general background of uranium extraction, followed by a brief discussion of the several possible reduction paths for photocatalytic reduction of uranium. Then, the effects of experimental conditions, photocatalyst stability and environmental adaptability on the performance of photocatalytic uranium reduction were systematically discussed. After having some fundamental understanding on photocatalytic uranium reduction, we summarized the design guidelines of photocatalysts for uranium reduction, and further discussed the corresponding advantages and disadvantages in photocatalytic uranium reduction. In addition, we concluded the current available characterization techniques for identifying uranium species after reduction, which is critical to the mechanistic study. Finally, we end this review with an outlook into the remaining challenges and future perspectives of photocatalytic uranium reduction.

Abstract:Uranium extraction from seawater (UES) is vital for sustainable nuclear energy and global energy transition. A comprehensive discussion on emerging UES materials presenting the fast‐growing progress of this field, focusing on the current UES technologies, the causality between the physiochemical properties of emerging UES materials and UES performances, the relationships of materials‐properties‐activities and the corresponding mechanisms, is thus highly needed. Nuclear energy holds great potential to facilitate the global energy transition and alleviate the increasing environmental issues due to its high energy density, stable energy output, and carbon‐free emission merits. Despite being limited by the insufficient terrestrial uranium reserves, uranium extraction from seawater (UES) can offset the gap. However, the low uranium concentration, the complicated uranium speciation, the competitive metal ions, and the inevitable marine interference remarkably affect the kinetics, capacity, selectivity, and sustainability of UES materials. To date, massive efforts have been made with varying degrees of success to pursue a desirable UES performance on various nanomaterials. Nevertheless, comprehensive and systematic coverage and discussion on the emerging UES materials presenting the fast‐growing progress of this field is still lacking. This review thus challenges this position and emphatically focuses on this topic covering the current mainstream UES technologies with the emerging UES materials. Specifically, this review elucidates the causality between the physiochemical properties of UES materials induced by the intellectual design strategies and the UES performances and further dissects the relationships of materials‐properties‐activities and the corresponding mechanisms in depth. This review is envisaged to inspire innovative ideas and bring technical solutions for developing technically and economically viable UES materials.

Abstract:Due to the increased attention given to actinide nanomaterials, the question of their structure–property relationship is on the spotlight of recent publications. Plutonium oxide (PuO 2 ) particularly plays a central role in nuclear energetics and a comprehensive knowledge about its properties when nanosizing is of paramount interest to understand its behaviour in environmental migration schemes but also for the development of advanced nuclear energy systems underway. The element plutonium further stimulates the curiosity of scientists due to the unique physical and chemical properties it exhibits around the periodic table. PuO 2 crystallizes in the fluorite structure of the face-centered cubic system for which the properties can be significantly affected when shrinking. Identifying the formation mechanism of PuO 2 nanoparticles, their related atomic, electronic and crystalline structures, and their reactivity in addition to their nanoscale properties, appears to be a fascinating and challenging ongoing topic, whose recent advances are discussed in this review.

Abstract:Nuclear energy with low carbon emission and high-energy density is considered as one of the most promising future energy sources for human beings. However, the use of nuclear energy will inevitably lead to the discharge of nuclear waste and the consumption of uranium resources. Therefore, the development of simple, efficient, and economical uranium extraction methods is of great significance for the sustainable development of nuclear energy and the restoration of the ecological environment. Photocatalytic U(VI) extraction technology as a simple, highly efficient, and low-cost strategy, received increasing attention from researchers. In this review, the development background of photocatalytic U(VI) extraction and several photocatalytic U(VI) reduction mechanisms are briefly described and the identification methods of uranium species after photocatalytic reduction are addressed. Subsequently, the modification strategies of several catalysts used for U(VI) extraction are summarized and the advantages and disadvantages of photocatalytic U(VI) extraction are compared. Additionally, the research progress of photocatalytic technology for U(VI) extraction in actual uranium-containing wastewater and seawater are evaluated. Finally, the current challenges and the developments of photocatalytic U(VI) extraction technology in the future are prospected.

Abstract:Uranium dioxide is a potential multi-functional material as well as nuclear rod. It exhibits excellent semiconductor performance and anti-irradiation ability. It has the similar band gap (1.3 eV) of silicon crystal (1.1 eV), its Seebeck coefficient is 4 times of the commercial thermoelectric material BiTe, and it shows higher conversion efficiency of solar cells due to its nearly full absorption. These properties make it great potential applications in the fields of semiconductor, solar energy and thermoelectricity. However, the U atoms in uranium dioxide (UO2 +/- x) can vary from -0.5 to 1, which is called hyperstoichiometric characteristics, resulting in some problems in crystal growth and property homogeneity. In this paper, we analyzed the structure and chemical stability of uranium oxides according to U-O phase diagrams, summarized recent research progress on crystal growth and physical properties of UO2 crystals. UO2 is an ideal Mott insulator with a stable electric conductivity, while the hyperstoichiometric UO2 +/- x crystals are semiconductors, and their physical properties, including electric conductivity, thermal conductivity and diffusion coefficient, and optical properties, are closely related to x. So far, UO2 crystals have grown via several methods, such as chemical vapor transport (CVT), sublimation, skull melting, hydrothermal and flux. The skull melting and hydrothermal techniques are expected to improve crystal dimensions and quality in future. The growth of UO2 crystals is expected to enhance the understanding of the material and provide the possibility of great potential applications in solar cells, thermoelectric devices and future electronics.

Abstract:The rapid growth in nuclear industries such as uranium ores mining, nuclear energy generation, spent-fuel treatment and nuclear weapon manufacture has caused a legacy of uranium contamination in the aquatic environment, which poses a potential threat to the ecological environment and human health. The safe and effective disposal of uranium-contaminated water has thus been an urgent requirement. For decades, various materials have been shown to be capable for removing uranium from aqueous solution by adsorption technique, namely inorganic materials (e.g., clay minerals, metal oxides, mesoporous silica), organic polymers (e.g., resins, cellulose, chitosan), carbon family materials (e.g., mesoporous carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxides), and porous framework materials (e.g., covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks). In this review, we provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of the researches conducted from 2005 to 2018 for uranium removal from aqueous solution by these emerging materials. The different approaches in the determination of the adsorption mechanisms between uranium and adsorbents are also briefly summarized, involving macroscopic experimental approaches, microscopic spectroscopic and computational approaches. Finally, we discuss the current limitations and propose future research perspectives in hopes of inspiring more dramatic advancements in the material and environment remediation fields.

Abstract:A uranium oxide hydrate framework, [U(H2O)2]{[(UO2)10O10(OH)2][(UO4)(H2O)2]} (UOF1), was synthesized hydrothermally using schoepite as a uranium precursor. The crystal strucutre of UOF1 was revealed with synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction and confirmed with transmission electron miscroscopy. The typical uranyl oxide hydroxide layers similar to those in β-U3O8 are further connected via double-pentagonal-bipyramidal uranium polyhedra to form a three-dimensional (3D) framework structure with tetravalent uranium species inside the channels. The presence of mixed-valence uranium was investigated with a combination of X-ray absorption near-edge structure and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Apart from the major hexavalent uranium, evidence for tetravalent uranium was also found, consistent with the bond valence sum calculations. Abstract:Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with intriguing physiochemical properties have recently stimulated increasing attention of researchers, MOFs have not adequately achieved various applications due to their instability and unsatisfied processability. Hence, MOF-based composites as well as structurally novel MOFs, have been established to solve the challenge. At present, some of the efforts have been made for the development of MOF-based hydrogels. They are exhibiting excellent consequences compared to initial MOFs in many ways. In this review, the up-to-date research progress of MOF-based hydrogels will be briefly summarized. We mainly focus on expounding the classification of MOF-based hydrogels and their related synergistic effects. As to details, we will provide a conspectus of laconic and latest approaches for the synthesis of MOF-based hydrogels, rendering focus on composite systems, mechanism research, and stability. In addition, the applications of MOF-based hydrogels have been widely discussed, particularly in the environment, energy and medical aspects. It is hoped that the detailed description of this review can help researchers working on MOF-based hydrogels to develop more novel composite materials and investigate wider applications.

Abstract:While uranium is the most extensively studied actinide in terms of chemical properties, there remains much to be explored about its fundamental chemistry. Organometallic and organoactinide chemistry first emerged in the 1950s with research that found inspiration from transition-metal chemistry with the synthesis and characterization of uranocene, expanding new opportunities for organoactinide chemistry. Since then, a significant amount of research has pursued many avenues characterizing the fundamental nature of the f orbitals and their modes of bonding as well as their potential in catalysis. Uranium(III/IV) arene complexes dominate much of uranium organometallic chemistry, with bonding interactions stabilized by δ-back-bonding. Recent additions to this area of chemistry include the first UI and new additions of UII organouranium compounds. Uranium-transition metal complexes are still rare and maintain UIV oxidation states, with variable bond lengths determining the transition-metal oxidation state. Resultant reactivities are discussed as synthetic complexes, and unique bonding and coordination motifs are highlighted. This Viewpoint will focus on significant developments in uranium chemistry from the last 15 years while considering key areas for future research.

Abstract:This review focuses on the microstructure design of MOFs and their derivatives, including special morphologies such as core–shell, yolk–shell, multi‐shelled, sandwich structures, and unique crystal surface exposures. It reviews their applications in energy, catalysis, atmospheric water harvesting, seawater uranium extraction, and triboelectric nanogenerators, and finally, it looks forward to the challenges and opportunities in regulating the synthesis of MOFs. Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a very promising material in the fields of energy and catalysis due to their rich active sites, tunable pore size, structural adaptability, and high specific surface area. The concepts of "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality" have opened up huge development opportunities in the fields of energy storage, energy conversion, and catalysis, and have made significant progress and breakthroughs. In recent years, people have shown great interest in the development of MOFs materials and their applications in the above research fields. This review introduces the design strategies and latest progress of MOFs are included based on their structures such as core–shell, yolk–shell, multi‐shelled, sandwich structures, unique crystal surface exposures, and MOF‐derived nanomaterials in detail. This work comprehensively and systematically reviews the applications of MOF‐based materials in energy and catalysis and reviews the research progress of MOF materials for atmospheric water harvesting, seawater uranium extraction, and triboelectric nanogenerators. Finally, this review looks forward to the challenges and opportunities of controlling the synthesis of MOFs through low‐cost, improved conductivity, high‐temperature heat resistance, and integration with machine learning. This review provides useful references for promoting the application of MOFs‐based materials in the aforementioned fields.
