Abstract:The steady supply of uranium resources and the reduction or elimination of the ecological and human health hazards of wastewater containing uranium make the recovery and detection of uranium in water greatly important. Thus, the development of effective adsorbents and sensors has received growing attention. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possessing fascinating characteristics such as high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, and luminescence have been widely used for either uranium adsorption or sensing. Now pertinent research has transited slowly into simultaneous uranium adsorption and detection. In this review, the progress on the research of MOF-based materials used for both adsorption and detection of uranium in water is first summarized. The adsorption mechanisms between uranium species in aqueous solution and MOF-based materials are elaborated by macroscopic batch experiments combined with microscopic spectral technology. Moreover, the application of MOF-based materials as uranium sensors is focused on their typical structures, sensing mechanisms, and the representative examples. Furthermore, the bifunctional MOF-based materials used for simultaneous detection and adsorption of U(VI) from aqueous solution are introduced. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and perspectives of MOF-based materials for uranium adsorption and detection to provide a useful inspiration and significant reference for further developing better adsorbents and sensors for uranium containment and detection.

Abstract:The efficient removal of uranium (U(Ⅵ)) from nuclear wastewater presents a significant challenge due to the high concentrations of uranium and various interfering ions. In this study, we developed and used metal-organic framework hydrogel (MOFH) as a highly efficient adsorbent for uranium removal. The MOFH, synthesized with ferrocyanides and functional groups (Fe(Ⅱ)-CN-Fe(Ⅲ), OH, -COOH, and -NH2), exhibited good chemical stability, large separation capacity, and high selectivity. The hydrogel's three-dimensional network, crosslinked with chitosan and alginic acid, significantly enhanced uranium removal. Even in the presence of high concentrations of coexisting cations and organic matter, the MOFH maintained a high removal rate (>95%) and distribution coefficient (Kd), and thus demonstrated strong resistance to interference from coexisting ions and showed great applicability in complex wastewater. The study also explored the MOFH's potential in treating uranium-contaminated wastewater from a smelting mine, showing effective uranium removal with minimal impact on other wastewater components. This research contributes to the development of novel adsorption materials and the understanding of their removal mechanisms, offering a comprehensive solution for the efficient removal of uranium from aqueous systems.

Abstract:A novel carboxyl-functionalized metal-organic framework for highly efficient uranium sorption was prepared through a generic postsynthetic strategy, and this MOF's saturation sorption capacity is found to be as high as 314 mg·g-1. The preliminary application illustrated that the grafted free-standing carboxyl groups have notably enhanced the sorption of uranyl ions on MIL-101. In addition, we have performed molecular dynamics simulation combined with density functional theory calculations to investigate the molecular insights of uranyl ions binding on MOFs. The high selectivity and easy separation of the as-prepared material have shown tremendous potential for practical applications in the nuclear industry or radioactive water treatment, and the functionalized MOF can be extended readily upon the versatility of click chemistry. This work provides a facile and purposeful approach for developing MOFs toward a highly efficient and selective extraction of uranium(VI) in aqueous solution, and it further facilitates the structure-based design of nanomaterials for radionuclide-containing-medium pretreatment.

Abstract:As we all know, energy and environment are two everlasting themes for the development of society. Nuclear power source, as a clean energy that is easy to be stored, has been rapidly developed in the past few decades. Because uranium is the main nuclear fuel, mining uranium from seawater is essential. Besides, uranium-containing wastewater discharged by nuclear industry also pose a serious threat for ecological environment. Considering the radioactivity and toxicity of uranium, it is urgent for us to remove U(VI) from wastewater. To achieve these ends, various uranium adsorption materials have been developed. Among them, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have aroused wide concern owing to the advantages of high specific surface areas, abundant active adsorption sites and controllable pore structure. However, there is huge room for MOFs and COFs in the application of uranium treatment. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review on MOFs and COFs for the enrichment and removal of U(VI) from seawater and wastewater, including synthetic approach, influencing factors, possible adsorption mechanism, as well as the performance comparison with other materials. In addition, the problem of current research is pointed out and the future direction about MOFs and COFs in uranium treatment is discussed. Noteworthy, a novel recurrent neural network (RNN) model is creatively put forward to connect the adsorption and detection of U(VI). More interestingly, the deep machine learning (ML) algorithm can replace the use of inductively couple plasma optimal emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The goal of this paper is to provide guidance for the synthesis of novel MOFs and COFs U-adsorbents and broaden their application in the treatment of U(VI).

Abstract:With the rapid industrial development and growing environmental awareness, the efficient extraction of uranium from seawater and wastewater has emerged as a research hotspot in nuclear energy development. Although metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) materials are widely used for uranium extraction, their low stability and poor selectivity hinder further development. Herein, a novel phosphorylurea functionalized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with optimized pore structure and hydrophilicity is fabricated (DUT-5-POR) by in situ induced etching strategy, which synergistically achieves the regulation of structural and coordination microenvironment. The presence of mesoporous pores can accelerate ion transport and expose abundant adsorption sites to enhance the adsorption capacity of uranium. Meanwhile, the introduction of phosphorylurea groups optimizes the hydrophilicity microenvironment and surface group density of DUT-5-POR to improve selectivity and kinetics. Consequently, DUT-5-POR shows an excellent adsorption ability (Q m = 263.4 mg⋅g −1 ) at pH = 6 and high selectivity for various competing metal ions, particularly in the separation of uranium and vanadium. Moreover, this work provides a feasible strategy for adjusting the structure and the coordination microenvironment of MOFs and a comprehensive perspective on the adsorption of uranium by MOF-based materials.

Abstract:In order to realize the low-carbon development policy, the large-scale development and utilization of nuclear energy is very essential. Uranium is the key resource for nuclear industry. The extracting and recycling uranium from seawater and nuclear wastewater is necessary for secure uranium reserves, ensure energy security, control pollution and protect the environment. The novel nanomaterial MXene possesses the layered structure, high specific surface area, and modifiable surface terminal groups, which allowed it to enrich uranium. In addition, good photovoltaic and photothermal properties improves the ability to adsorb uranium. The excellent radiation resistance of the MAX phase strongly indicates the potential use of MXene as an effective uranium adsorbent. However, there are relatively few reviews on its application in uranium extraction and recovery. This review focuses on the recent advances in the use of MXene-based materials as highly efficient adsorbents for the recovery of uranium from seawater and nuclear wastewater. First, the structural, synthetic and characterization aspects of MXene materials are introduced. Subsequently, the adsorptive properties of MXene-based materials are evaluated in terms of uranium extraction recovery capability, selectivity, and reproducibility. Furthermore, the interaction mechanisms between uranium and MXene absorbers are discussed. Finally, the challenges for MXene materials in uranium adsorption applications are proposed for better design of new types of MXene-based adsorbents.

Abstract:With the rapid development of nuclear technology and peaceful utilization of nuclear energy, plentiful U(VI) not only is required to be extracted from solutions for a sustainable nuclear fuel supply but also is inevitably released into the surrounding environment to result in pollution and threaten human health. Thereby, realizing selective extraction of U(VI) from aqueous solutions is crucial for U(VI) pollution control and a sustainable nuclear industry. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained multidisciplinary attention due to their excellent properties including large specific surface areas, tunable pore structures, easy functionalization, etc. This Review comprehensively summarizes the research progress of MOFs and MOF-based materials on U(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by sorption, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, membrane separation, etc. The efficient high extraction ability is dependent on the intrinsic properties of MOFs and the techniques used. The removal properties of MOF-based materials as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and electrocatalysts for U(VI) are discussed. Information about the interaction mechanisms between U(VI) and MOF-based materials are analyzed in-depth, including experiments, theoretical calculations, and advanced spectroscopy analysis. The removal properties for U(VI) of various MOF-based materials are assessed through different techniques. Finally, a summary and perspective on the direction and challenges of MOF-based materials and various pollutant removal technologies are proposed to provide some significant information on designing and fabricating MOF-based materials for environmental pollution management.

Abstract:Photoreduction conversion of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) is considered a promising strategy for uranium capture from radioactive wastewater and seawater. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as potential photocatalysts due to their inherent large surface areas, tunable cavities, and tailorable photo response. Herein, the electronic structure of UiO-66-NH2 (Zr-MOF) is modulated by missing-linker defects and node metal substitution, allowing for the reduced energy needed to transfer the excited linker’s electrons to the node’s unoccupied d orbitals, which contributes to enhanced photocatalytic uranium extraction capacity. Moreover, the missing-linker defects create more open frameworks, which facilitate fast diffusion of uranyl ions (UO2 2+) into inner pores and hence increase utilization of the hidden adsorption binding sites. Consequently, light-irradiated Zr/Ti-MOF-25 delivers a high uranium sorption capacity (8.66 ± 0.29 mg-U/g-Ads) with excellent antimicrobial ability in natural seawater. Creation of defects in MOFs opens novel opportunities for enhancing uranium capture through combined complexation and photoreduction.

Abstract:The combination of metal − organic frameworks (MOFs) and magnetic nanoparticles has been demonstrated their prospective for sequestration of heavy metal or radionuclides. In this work, five kinds of magnetic metal − organic framework including ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 , ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 , CuBTC@Fe 3 O 4 , MIL101(Fe)@Fe 3 O 4 , and MOF74@Fe 3 O 4 , was prepared and used as novel highly-efficient scavengers for the capture of U(VI) from aqueous environment. These magnetic nanocomposites before and/or after U(VI) capture were characterized by FTIR, SEM–EDS, XRD, TEM, BET, and XPS analyses. A batch technique was applied for the capture of U(VI) using these magnetic nanocomposites at different operating parameters. The isotherm and kinetic data were more accurately fitted by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 and ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 exhibit the potential to capture U(VI) from aqueous solutions with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 441 and 1058 mg/g –1 , respectively, by fitting the equilibrium data to the Langmuir model. The excellent adsorption capacity and the response to the magnetic field made these novel nanocomposites auspicious candidates in nuclear waste management.

Abstract:A carboxylate‐functionalized 2D metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheet with cage‐like cavities was constructed based on the calix[4]arene, which not only facilitates MOF exfoliation and pollutant capture but also prevents pollutant desorption. The as‐synthesized MOF nanosheets show an ultrahigh selectivity and anti‐interference performance for uranium. The efficient removal of radioactive uranium from aqueous solution is of great significance for the safe and sustainable development of nuclear power. An ultrathin 2D metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheet with cavity structures was elaborately fabricated based on a calix[4]arene ligand. Incorporating the permanent cavity structures on MOF nanosheet can fully utilize its structural characteristics of largely exposed surface area and accessible adsorption sites in pollutant removal, achieving ultrafast adsorption kinetics, and the functionalized cavity structure would endow the MOF nanosheets with the ability to achieve preconcentration and extraction of uranium from aqueous solution, affording ultrahigh removal efficiency even in ultra‐low concentrations. Thus, more than 97% uranium can be removed from the concentration range of 50–500 μg L−1 within 5 min. Moreover, the 2D nano‐material exhibits ultra‐high anti‐interference ability, which can efficiently remove uranium from groundwater and seawater. The adsorption mechanism was investigated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which revealed that the cavity structure plays an important role in uranium capture. This study not only realizes highly efficient uranium removal from aqueous solution but also opens the door to achieving ultrathin MOF nanosheets with cavity structures, which will greatly expand the applications of MOF nanosheets.

Rational Construction of Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks for Uranium(VI) Extraction: The Strong Periodic Tendency with a Metal Node

Abstract:Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported as important porous materials for the potential utility in metal ion separation, coordinating the functionality, structure, and component of MOFs remains a great challenge. Herein, a series of anionic rare earth MOFs (RE-MOFs) were synthesized via a solvothermal template reaction and for the first time explored for uranium(VI) capture from an acidic medium. The unusually high extraction capacity of UO22+ (e.g., 538 mg U per g of Y-MOF) was achieved through ion-exchange with the concomitant release of Me2NH2+, during which the uranium(VI) extraction in the series of isostructural RE-MOFs was found to be highly sensitive to the ionic radii of the metal nodes. That is, the uranium(VI) adsorption capacities continuously increased as the ionic radii decreased. In-depth mechanism insight was obtained from molecular dynamics simulations, suggesting that both the accessible pore volume of the MOFs and hydrogen-bonding interactions contribute to the strong periodic tendency of uranium(VI) extraction.

Abstract:Worldwide rapid urbanization and development accelerate anthropogenic heavy metals release and dispersion from local to broader areas, posing serious threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Although removing various heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions is well explored, current approaches on how to treat heavy metal pollution efficiently and pertinently still need improvement. Adsorption has been identified as the best technique for heavy metal removal, while metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were considered to be one of the most promising emerging adsorbents capable of addressing complex environmental problems and possessing excellent adsorption properties. Therefore, the synthesis techniques, functionalization methods, and adsorption mechanisms (including adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, etc.) of MOFs to provide optimal solutions for the design, synthesis, and optimization of MOFs were comprehensively reviewed in this work. In addition, a detailed overview and comparison of the applications of pristine MOFs, functionalized MOFs, and MOFs complexes in the removal of heavy metals are also carried out, from which we summarize the adsorption characteristics of various MOFs and give prospects for the development of MOFs. In brief, this review offers a detailed summary of the current information on the removal of heavy metals by MOFs, aiming to provide a strong reference for the synthesis of MOFs and a feasible solution for heavy metal treatment.

Abstract:Abstract With the significant increase in the amount of natural uranium mining in various countries around the world, a large amount of waste rocks are piled up in the tailings pond. If the uranium-containing wastewater is not treated, it will bring serious environmental problems. After related experiments in the laboratory, it is measured that the adsorption rate of high-tech products-MOF-808 material to uranium ions can reach 97% (the optimal pH=7.0, and the optimal dosage is 0.2mg/L). It can be used as a good adsorption material. Based on the high-efficiency selective adsorption of this material to uranium, a set of equipment using MOF-808 was designed in this paper. This device adopts improved intermittent processing, high integration and automation level, and small floor space. According to the desorption characteristics of the material, a simple membrane cleaning method is designed to recover high-concentration uranium-containing cleaning liquid, which greatly reduces the amount of mud and can produce considerable economic benefits. In addition, cleaning and operation can be carried out at the same time, realizing continuous uranium-containing wastewater treatment, which meets the requirements of energy saving and emission reduction, and is beneficial to the construction of green mines.
Selective capture of uranium by p-block bismuth-based metal–organic framework

Abstract:Energy shortage severely impedes the advancement of human society and economy. The vigorous development of nuclear energy is a viable solution to address this issue. The escalating depletion of uranium resources necessitates prioritizing the selective extraction of uranyl from seawater and wastewater to ensure the prosperity of nuclear power. A bismuth-based MOF , CAU-17, was synthesized by the one-step solvothermal method for targeted selection of uranyl in the first time. The uranium adsorption tests demonstrated that CAU-17 exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 421.9 mg g −1 ( T = 25 °C, pH = 7), exceptional selectivity, outstanding salt tolerance, and favorable stability with 83.6 % of the initial capacity retained after 5 cycles. Through the utilization of XPS and theoretical calculations, it was elucidated that the carboxyl oxygen that connects the Bi played a pivotal role in the binding process between CAU-17 and uranium ions, with bismuth acting as an electron regulator through its bridging effect with carboxyl oxygen. This work not only presents an exceptional uranium adsorption material but also elucidates the role of core metal atoms in MOFs during the binding to uranium process, thereby offering a novel perspective for future advancements in MOFs-based adsorbents.

Abstract:Uranium is considered as one of the most perilous radioactive contaminants in the aqueous environment. It has shown detrimental effects on both flora and fauna and because of its toxicities on human beings, therefore its exclusion from the aqueous environment is very essential. The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an adsorbent for the removal of uranium from the aqueous environment could be a good approach. MOFs possess unique properties like high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, etc. This makes them promising adsorbents for the removal of uranium from contaminated water. In this paper, sources of uranium in the water environment, human health disorders, and application of the different types of MOFs as well as the mechanisms of uranium removal have been discussed meticulously.
Hierarchical Porous Amidoximated Metal–Organic Framework for Highly Efficient Uranium Extraction

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid development of industry and technology, high‐efficiency extraction of uranium from seawater is a research hotspot from the aspect of nuclear energy development. Herein, a new amidoximated metal–organic framework (UiO‐66‐DAMN‐AO) constructed through a novel organic ligand of 2‐diaminomaleonitrile‐terephthalic acid (BDC‐DAMN) is designed via one‐step post‐synthetic methods (PSM), which possess the merit of abundant multiaffinity sites, large specific surface area, and unique porous structure for efficient uranium extraction. Adopting one‐step PSM can alleviate the destruction of structural stability and the reduction of the conversion rate of amidoxime groups. Meanwhile, introducing the BDC‐DAMN ligand with abundant multiaffinity sites endow UiO‐66‐DAMN‐AO with excellent adsorption ability ( Q m = 426.3 mg g −1 ) and selectivity. Interestingly, the UiO‐66‐DAMN‐AO has both micropores and mesopores, which may be attributed to the partial etching of UiO‐66‐DAMN‐AO during the amidoximation. The presence of mesopores improves the mass transfer rate of UiO‐66‐DAMN‐AO and provides more exposed active sites, favoring the adsorption of uranium on UiO‐66‐DAMN‐AO. Thus, this study provides a feasible strategy for modifying metal–organic framework (MOFs) with plentiful amidoxime groups and the promising prospect for MOF‐based materials to adsorb uranium from ocean.

Abstract:Extracting uranium from seawater is of great importance for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. A central problem is to develop high-performance adsorbents to allow for efficient and selective recovery of uranium from seawater. Since the adsorption properties are strongly dependent on the functional groups and the architectures of the adsorbents, one option is to bond effectively functional groups onto high-surface-area materials. Here we report the first synthesis of amidoxime functionalized metal-organic frameworks MIL-101-OA, exhibiting excellent adsorption performance arising from the large surface areas of the metal-organic frameworks (MIL-101) and the high affinity of the amidoxime towards uranyl. The MIL-101-OA was synthesized via grafting of acrylonitrile onto the pores of MIL-101 followed by its conversion to amidoxime functionalities. The MIL-101-OA demonstrated excellent uranium adsorption capacities of 321 mg g−1 in simulated seawater and 4.6 mg g−1 in real seawater, which are competitive with the currently state-of-the-art uranium adsorbent.

Abstract:Uranium enrichment is perhaps the most critical chemical process throughout the nuclear fuel cycle including uranium mining, uranium extraction from seawater, used fuel reprocessing and disposal, and environmental contamination remediation. New uranium extraction technology is still highly desirable at current stage, although a variety of extraction methods have been established and developed in the past several decades but all with clear demerits. Herein we present a new uranium extraction strategy with combined ligand complexation and photocatalytic reduction based on postsynthetically functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The highly robust and photoactive MOF PCN-222 is modified with phosphono- and amino groups that can capture U(VI) from solution. Upon visible light irradiation, the photo-induced electrons from the MOF host can efficiently reduce U(VI) pre-enriched in MOF, affording neutral uranium species that evacuate the MOF structure and regenerating the active site readily for capturing additional U(VI). This auto-recycled process offers an ultrahigh uranium extraction capacity not limited by the number of adsorption sites and more importantly an extra uranium uptake selectivity over these non-redox-active competing metal cations, and can be utilized for uranium separation over extremely wide uranium concentrations and pH ranges, showing a powerful application potential.
