Abstract:Electroplating refers to a material coating process employing the principle of metal deposition by electrochemical methods. The specimen to be coated is made into the cathode, while the material covering the specimen is applied as the anode. The two electrodes are further connected in one direction (DC) and are in an electrolyte solution. The commonly used metallic coatings include nickel, chrome, copper and zinc. The metal electroplating process is basically utilized to delay the corrosion rate, presenting a decorative impression on the metal surface. The application of such electroplating processes covers the industrial sectors, construction and automotive sector. This study aims to determine the effect of distance variations on the decorative nickel-chrome electroplating process of the microstructure, thickness and weight of A36 steel plating. The dimensions of 4 specimens in this study were 30 × 30 × 2 (mm). Nickel and chrome plating varied in distances of 3, 4.5, 6 and 7.5 (cm) with a time of 22 minutes and a temperature of 55-60° C. Electroplating results were tested by observing the results of microstructure, thickness and weight changes. The results further indicated that farther distance of anode and cathode, generated thinner and lighter plating results; while closer distance of anode and cathode, generated thicker and heavier plating results. The color of nickel tends to be bright white and bright, while chrome indicates bright yellow. The highest thickness and weight results were found at a distance of 3 cm with a thickness of 5.31 μm (Nickel) and 12, 51 μm (Chrome), and a total weight of 14.415 grams. Meanwhile, the lowest thickness and weight were discovered in variations of 7.5 cm, which was 4.04 μm (Nickel) and 11.1 μm (Chrome), and a total weight of 14.264 grams.
