Abstract:The noise generated by a propeller operating in a turbulent wake is known as turbulence-ingesting noise, which is numerically studied for a classical ten-bladed Sevik propeller downstream of a 6-inch grid. This study employs Large Eddy Simulation in conjunction with the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings acoustic solver. The numerical findings indicate that the turbulence-ingesting noise and thrust spectra are characterized by several humps at blade passing frequencies, as well as a rightward shift of the peak frequency with respect to the blade passing frequency. More importantly, this work shows the dependencies of those humps and frequency shifts on various representative operation conditions. Overall, the frequency shift also increases along with the incoming flow speed but decreases along with the rotational speed. Furthermore, the results suggest that the noise of the propeller operating in a turbulent wake is caused by both the rotor-turbulence interaction and the flow separation. In essence, the main contribution of this paper is providing underneath mechanics of the right-shift frequency characteristics of the noise spectrum, which can deepen the understanding of the physical mechanism of the turbulence-ingesting noise. This knowledge can, in turn, facilitate the ongoing efforts to reduce the unsteady force and noise in ocean engineering.
