Abstract:Oxygen vacancy plays an important role in many fields, such as photocatalysis, energy storages, electro-catalysis, which has been widely investigated both by experiment and theoretical calculations. Herein, this review presents the new type and advanced methods to detect the existence of oxygen vacancies in nanomaterials, such as, electron paramagnetic resonance, synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and positron annihilation spectroscopy measurements. In addition, we provide some perspectives on the challenge and new direction for future research in oxygen vacancy. We hope that this minireview can offer some useful contributions to the future development of defective nanomaterials for diverse application.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies in transition-metal oxides can facilitate photocatalysis activity critical for environmental remediation and solar energy conversion. Investigation of photocatalytic activity of TiO(2)with different amounts of the oxygen vacancies can provide fundamental insights into the oxygen-vacancy-dependent reaction mechanisms. Here, the oxygen vacancies in TiO(2)nanoparticles were investigated by the combination of transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectra, x-ray near-edge structures, and x-ray absorption techniques. The results demonstrate that the oxygen vacancies mainly exist at the surface of TiO(2)and the crystalline structure of TiO(2)almost keeps no change during annealing under the different oxygen pressures at 500 degrees C. The exact quantity and distribution of the oxygen vacancies in TiO(2)nanoparticles were obtained. The surface oxygen vacancies on TiO(2)significantly enhance photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B degradation and hydrogen generation. The formation of oxygen vacancies at the TiO(2)surfaces is responsible for engineering the band gap of TiO(2)and tailoring their electronic structures, and promoting light absorption and enhancement photocatalysis. This work could provide new insights into the understanding of the photocatalytic activity enhancement by the surface oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:At the heart of modern oxide chemistry lies the recognition that beneficial (as well as deleterious) materials properties can be obtained by deliberate deviations of oxygen atom occupancy from the ideal stoichiometry1,2. Conversely, the capability to control and confine oxygen vacancies will be important to realize the full potential of perovskite ferroelectric materials, varistors and field-effect devices3,4. In transition metal oxides, oxygen vacancies are generally electron donors, and in strontium titanate (SrTiO3) thin films, oxygen vacancies (unlike impurity dopants) are particularly important because they tend to retain high carrier mobilities, even at high carrier densities5. Here we report the successful fabrication, using a pulsed laser deposition technique, of SrTiO3 superlattice films with oxygen doping profiles that exhibit subnanometre abruptness. We profile the vacancy concentrations on an atomic scale using annular-dark-field electron microscopy and core-level spectroscopy, and demonstrate absolute detection sensitivities of one to four oxygen vacancies. Our findings open a pathway to the microscopic study of individual vacancies and their clustering, not only in oxides, but in crystalline materials more generally.

Abstract:Defect engineering of semiconductor photocatalysts is critical in reducing the reaction barriers. The generation of surface oxygen vacancies allows substantial tuning of the electronic structure of anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2), but disclosing the vacancy formation at the atomic level remains complex or time-consuming. Herein, we combine density functional theory calculations with machine learning to identify the main factors affecting the formation of oxygen defects and accelerate the prediction of vacancy formation. The results show that the first two-layer oxygen atoms on the typical surfaces of TiO2, including (100), (110), and (211) facets, are more likely to be activated when the gas is more reduced, the pressure is higher, and the reduction temperature is increased. Through machine learning, we can conveniently predict the formation of oxygen defects with high accuracy. Furthermore, we present an equation with acceptable accuracy for quantitatively describing the formation of oxygen vacancies in different chemical environments. Our work provides a fast and efficient strategy for characterizing the surface structure with atomic defects.

Abstract:Defect engineering has been the most promising strategy to modulate the surface microstructure and electronic structure of the metal oxides, which will govern the efficiency of a given oxide for the applications in heterogeneous catalysis, energy storage and conversion fields, and gas sensing. This review summarizes recent research advances on understanding the role of oxygen vacancies of the metal oxides in gas sensing. First, different strategies for oxygen vacancy productions are summarized and compared. Then, the proper characterization techniques for oxygen vacancy are introduced. Importantly, the structure‐activity relationships between vacancy engineering and gas sensing ability are further illustrated coupling the experimental results and theoretical studies. A Review on Optical Bandgap Engineering in TiO2 Nanostructures via Doping and Intrinsic Vacancy Modulation Towards Visible Light Applications

Abstract:Abstract The prospect of engineering the optical bandgap in semiconductor nanostructures all the way from ultraviolet to visible is highly significant in various applications such as photocatalysis, sensing, opto-electronics, and biomedical applications. Since many of the semiconductors have their optical bandgaps in the UV region, various techniques are used for the tuning of their bandgaps to the visible region. Doping and co-doping with metals and nonmetals have been found highly effective in bandgap narrowing as doping creates a continuum of mid-bandgap states which effectively reduces their bandgap. Other than these techniques, the modulation of intrinsic vacancies is an effective way to control the optical bandgap. Among all semiconductors, Titanium dioxide is a well-studied material for UV photocatalytic applications. TiO2 has oxygen and Titanium vacancies as intrinsic defects which influence the bandgap based on its phase of existence. The creation of oxygen vacancies generates unpaired electrons associated with Ti3+ species resulting in the creation of donor levels within the bandgap. Trivacancies give p-type nature to TiO2 due to excess holes and generate acceptor levels in the bandgap. The existence of a continuum of such intrinsic defect states within the bandgap appears to narrow the bandgap and enhance the visible light absorption in TiO2 though the effect is an apparent narrowing. Doping and co-doping of TiO2 with metals Au, Ag, Fe, Co, Ni, Pt, Pd, etc., and non-metals B, C, N, Br, Cl, etc, doping with Ti3+ ions, hydrogenation etc have been found to narrow down the optical bandgap of TiO2. In this review, we focus on such intrinsic vacancy modulated optical bandgap narrowing in TiO2. This review covers significantly recent advancements in bandgap engineering of TiO2.
Black TiO2 and Oxygen Vacancies: Unraveling the Role in the Thermal Anatase-to-Rutile Transformation

Abstract:Understanding the role of oxygen vacancies in the phase transformation of metal oxide nanomaterials is fundamental to design more efficient opto-electronic devices for a variety of applications, including sensing, spintronics, photocatalysis, and photo-electrochemistry. However, the structural mechanisms behind the phase transformation in reducible oxides remain poorly described. Here, we compare P25 and black TiO2 during the thermal anatase-to-rutile transformation using in situ synchrotron powder diffraction. The precise measurement of the phase fractions, unit cell parameters, and Ti-O bond sheds light on the phase transformation dynamics. Notably, we observe distinct temperature-dependent shifts in the relative phase fractions of anatase and rutile in both materials highlighting the role of the oxygen vacancy in promoting the phase transformation. We employ bond valence concepts for structural modeling, revealing unique trends in temperature evolution of Ti-O distances of black rutile, confirming that this TiO2 phase is preferentially reduced over anatase. These findings not only enhance our understanding of phase transitions in TiO2 but also open new ways for the design of advanced photocatalytic materials through targeted phase control.

Abstract:TiO2 has wide applications in areas like photocatalysis, environmental purification, gas sensor, high effect solar cell, etc. Nano-structured TiO2 is particularly interesting due to its large surface area. TiO2 based nanombes were first fabricated through a hydrothermal reaction between TiO2 and NaOH in 1998-1999 by Kasaki et al. Later, our group performed similar reaction at 130 degrees C and obtained large quantities of high quality nanotubes. Through a systematic structure analysis, the nanotubes were found to be scroll type trititanate nanotubes, instead of TiO2 nanotubes. The formation mechanism was studied both experimentally and through ab initio calculations. Since then, intense studies have been performed on the fabrication and the structure of titanate nanotubes and related nanostructures, such as titanate nanowires and nanoshects. These nano-structured titanate nanostructures have been found to have a wide range of application in many important areas. In this review, we summarise some recent achievements on the fabrication, the structure and applications of the titanate nanostructures.

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology is a novel approach that harnesses solar energy for efficient energy conversion and effective pollution abatement, representing a rapidly advancing field in recent years. The development and synthesis of high-performance semiconductor photocatalysts constitute the pivotal focal point. Oxygen vacancies, being intrinsic defects commonly found in metal oxides, are extensively present within the lattice of semiconductor photocatalytic materials exhibiting non-stoichiometric ratios. Consequently, they have garnered significant attention in the field of photocatalysis as an exceptionally effective means for modulating the performance of photocatalysts. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the concept, preparation, and characterization methods of oxygen vacancies, along with their diverse applications in nitrogen fixation, solar water splitting, CO2 photoreduction, pollutant degradation, and biomedicine. Currently, remarkable progress has been made in the synthesis of high performance oxygen vacancy photocatalysts and the regulation of their catalytic performance. In the future, it is imperative to develop more advanced in-situ characterization techniques, conduct further investigations into the regulation and stabilization of oxygen vacancies in photocatalysts, and comprehensively comprehend the mechanism underlying the influence of oxygen vacancies on photocatalysis. The engineering of oxygen vacancies will assume a pivotal role in the realm of semiconductor photocatalysis.

Detection of Oxygen Vacancies in Oxides by Defect-Dependent Cataluminescence

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies can control a number of distinct properties of oxides. However, rapid and simple detection of oxygen vacancies is a great challenge owing to their elusive species and highly diluted contents. In this work, we have discovered that cataluminescence (CTL) intensity in diethyl ether oxidation reaction on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles is proportional to the content of oxygen vacancies. The oxygen vacancy-dependent diethyl ether CTL is attributed to the fact that abundant chemisorbed O2 in oxygen vacancies could facilitate its contact reaction with chemisorbed diethyl ether molecules, resulting in an obvious improvement of CTL intensity. Therefore, diethyl ether CTL can be employed as a simple probe for oxygen vacancies in TiO2 nanoparticles. Its feasibility is validated by detecting the CTL intensity of diethyl ether on the surface of TiO2 with variable oxygen vacancies by metal ion-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (Cu, Fe, Co, and Cr) and hydrogen-treated TiO2 nanoparticles at different temperatures. The content of oxygen vacancies by the present CTL probe is in good agreement with that obtained by conventional X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique. The superior properties of the developed CTL probe over already-developed methods include fast response, easy operation, low cost, long-term stability, and simple configuration. We believe that the oxygen vacancy-sensitive CTL probe has a great potential in distinguishing oxygen vacancies in oxides.

Abstract:Nanomedicine has become an important development direction of modern medicine, and provides a new way for cancer theranostics. To extend the superior physicochemical property of nanomedicine and enhance their role in cancer theranostics, various strategies have been proposed. Among them, the introduction of oxygen vacancies can enhance the separation of electron-hole pairs and improve the nanomaterials’ catalytic activity, which is beneficial for cancer diagnosis and treatment. This review briefly summarized the formation mechanism and preparation methods of various oxygen vacancy nanomaterials. Then, the effect and application of various oxygen vacancy nanomaterials, such as iron, manganese, titanium, zinc, bismuth, tungsten, cerium, and molybdenum-based nanomaterials in enhancing cancer theranostics were highlighted. At last, the prospect and challenges of oxygen vacancy nanomaterials were discussed. This review provided an overview of the relevant information on oxygen vacancy in cancer theranostics, and further promoted the development of cancer nanomedicine.

Abstract:It was demonstrated recently that the nano-optical and nanoelectronic properties of VO 2 can be spatially programmed through the local injection of oxygen vacancies by atomic force microscope writing. In this work, we study the dynamic evolution of the patterned domain structures as a function of the oxygen vacancy concentration and the time. A threshold doping level is identified that is critical for both the metal–insulator transition and the defect stabilization. The diffusion of oxygen vacancies in the monoclinic phase is also characterized, which is directly responsible for the short lifetimes of sub-100 nm domain structures. This information is imperative for the development of oxide nanoelectronics through defect manipulations.

Abstract:ZnO nanomaterials have attracted tremendous interest in the fields of photocatalysis, sensors, solar cells, supercapacitors, etc. However, the performance of intrinsic ZnO is limited by several factors such as insufficient light absorption, poor charge transport and low conductivity. Extensive studies have indicated that the controlled introduction of oxygen vacancies (VO) into ZnO can manipulate their optical, electronic and surface properties, enabling their enhanced performance in various applications. Here, we present a state-of-the-art review on the various synthetic approaches of ZnO nanomaterials with VO and their defect-related properties including structural characteristics, band structure, optical, electrical and ferromagnetic properties. In addition, their use in various applications such as photocatalysts, photoelectrodes, antibacterial agents, gas sensors, supercapacitors and other electronic devices related to VO-rich ZnO are outlined. Furthermore, we offer some perspectives on the challenges and new directions in this field. We hope that this review would provide some useful information to the design, synthesis and applications of metal oxide nanomaterials with defects.

Abstract:Energy crisis and environmental problems urgently drive the proposal of new strategies to improve human wellbeing and assist sustainable development. To this end, scientists have explored many metal oxides-based photocatalysts with high stability, low cost, earth abundance, and potentially high catalytic activity relevant for key applications such as H2O splitting, CO2 reduction, N2 fixation, and advanced oxidation of pollutants. In these metal oxides, oxygen vacancies (OVs) are ubiquitous and intrinsic defects with pronounced impacts on the physicochemical properties of the catalysts, which may open new opportunities for obtaining efficient metal oxides. The thorough understanding of the structural and electronic nature of OVs is necessary to determine how they serve as catalytically active sites. In this review, we summarize the origin of OVs, the strategies to introduce OVs, as well as the fundamental structure-activity relationships to relate these crystal defects to catalyst properties including light absorption, charge separation, etc. We emphasize the mechanism of OVs formation and their effects on the intrinsic catalytic characteristics of the metal oxides. We also present some multicomponent catalytic platforms where OVs contribute to catalysis via synergy. Finally, opportunities and challenges on engineering defects in photocatalysts are summarized to highlight the future directions of this research field.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) recently has attracted a great deal of attention in different fields, such as renewable energy and pollutant removal, due to its low price and amphoteric nature. Many studies have pointed out that phase composition and oxygen vacancies play a certain role in promoting the performance of TiO2. However, the effect of oxygen vacancy on the phase transformation of TiO2 has been ignored, which also influences the phase composition and limits its application under certain conditions. In this paper, by controlling the univariate of oxygen vacancy, the influence of oxygen vacancy on the stability and crystal type of TiO2 is clearly pointed out, with the help of variable temperature in situ X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis (DTA), and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) theoretical calculations. The formation of oxygen vacancy can reduce the phase change energy, which must be overcome before rearrangement of the structure, and promote the phase transformation of anatase. Based on these, it also provides a guide for the design of materials with oxygen vacancy.

Abstract:TiO2 nanoparticles containing oxygen vacancies mostly existed in the bulk phase, and the counterpart with oxygen vacancies both on the surface and in the bulk phase, were successfully prepared via calcination of nanotube titanic acid under air and H2 atmosphere respectively. The effect of surface and/or bulk oxygen vacancies on the structure and electrochemical properties of electrode materials were studied. The materials characterization results demonstrate that under air atmosphere, the obtained TiO2 nanoparticles containing oxygen vacancies mainly in the bulk phase, while its surface still remains the stoichiometric structure. While hydrogenation process leads to a crystalline-disordered core–shell structure, oxygen vacancies existed both on the surface and in the bulk of TiO2 nanoparticles. As-fabricated TiO2 samples containing oxygen vacancies exhibit markedly improved electrochemical properties comparison with TiO2 nanoparticles without defects. Oxygen vacancies can act as physical space for Li-ion storage thus improve the specific capacity of electrode, the enhanced rate performance mainly origin from the bulk oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is a promising anode material for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) due to its low cost, natural abundance, nontoxicity, and excellent electrochemical stability. Oxygen vacancies, the most common point defects in TiO 2 , can dramatically influence the physical and chemical properties of TiO 2 , including band structure, crystal structure and adsorption properties. Recent studies have demonstrated that oxygen‐deficient TiO 2 can significantly enhance sodium storage performance. Considering the importance of oxygen vacancies in modifying the properties of TiO 2 , the structural properties, common synthesis strategies, characterization techniques, as well as the contribution of oxygen‐deficient TiO 2 on initial Coulombic efficiency, cyclic stability, rate performance for sodium storage are comprehensively described in this review. Finally, some perspectives on the challenge and future opportunities for the development of oxygen‐deficient TiO 2 are proposed.
