Abstract:Integrating the various embedded devices and systems in our environment enables an Internet of Things (IoT) for a smart city. The IoT will generate tremendous amount of data that can be leveraged for safety, efficiency, and infotainment applications and services for city residents. The management of this voluminous data through its lifecycle is fundamental to the realization of smart cities. Therefore, in contrast to existing surveys on smart cities we provide a data-centric perspective, describing the fundamental data management techniques employed to ensure consistency, interoperability, granularity, and reusability of the data generated by the underlying IoT for smart cities. Essentially, the data lifecycle in a smart city is dependent on tightly coupled data management with cross-cutting layers of data security and privacy, and supporting infrastructure. Therefore, we further identify techniques employed for data security and privacy, and discuss the networking and computing technologies that enable smart cities. We highlight the achievements in realizing various aspects of smart cities, present the lessons learned, and identify limitations and research challenges.

Abstract:The rise of Internet of things (IoT) technology has revolutionized urban living, offering immense potential for smart cities in which smart home, smart infrastructure, and smart industry are essential aspects that contribute to the development of intelligent urban ecosystems. The integration of smart home technology raises concerns regarding data privacy and security, while smart infrastructure implementation demands robust networking and interoperability solutions. Simultaneously, deploying IoT in industrial settings faces challenges related to scalability, standardization, and data management. This research paper offers a systematic literature review of published research in the field of IoT in smart cities including 55 relevant primary studies that have been published in reputable journals and conferences. This extensive literature review explores and evaluates various aspects of smart home, smart infrastructure, and smart industry and the challenges like security and privacy, smart sensors, interoperability and standardization. We provide a unified perspective, as we seek to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of smart cities while overcoming security concerns. It then explores their potential for collective integration and impact on the development of smart cities. Furthermore, this study addresses the challenges associated with each component individually and explores their combined impact on enhancing urban efficiency and sustainability. Through a comprehensive analysis of security concerns, this research successfully integrates these IoT components in a unified approach, presenting a holistic framework for building smart cities of the future. Integrating smart home, smart infrastructure, and smart industry, this research highlights the significance of an integrated approach in developing smart cities.

Abstract:The development of the Internet of things (IoT) is rapidly growing everywhere in our daily lives. Advanced information and communication technologies play a vital role in the development of smart cities/industries, including buildings, hospitals, transportation, and other related public and private environments. The emerging technologies are converging as a computing paradigm to optimize resource allocation dynamically to improve the quality of services. The deployment of interconnected devices uses heterogeneous networks and powerful data centers to perform ubiquitous sensing, which can collect and transfer real-time data to offer computational intelligence. Moreover, sustainable resources such as devices, networks, and databases are intellectually equipped to standardize governance and service deliveries. The sustainable environment has a network infrastructure to collect, store, and analyze real-time data to provide an efficient decision-making process. IoT-enabled smart sustainable environments integrate advanced technologies to build people-centric smart cities and industries. Most service intelligence and technical schemas are easily accessible and applicable to authorize the scope of civic intelligence. However, the potential issues such as security and privacy are open to deal with the challenges of security requirements. A thematic classification of security and privacy issues is primarily focused on authentication and key management protocols to secure Industrial IoT environments. Abstract:A Smart City can be described as an urbanized town, wherein Information and Communication Technology are at the core of its infrastructure. Smart cities serve several innovative and advanced services for its citizens in order to improve the quality of their life. A Smart City must encompass all the forthcoming and highly advanced and integrated technology, the essence of which is the Internet of Things (IoT). Smart technologies like smart governance, smart communication, smart environment, smart transportation, smart energy, waste and water management applications promise the smart growth of the city, but at the same time, it needs to enforce pervasive security and privacy of the large volume of data associated with these smart applications. Special smart measures are required to cover urbanization trends in the innovative administration of urban transference and various smart services to the residents, visitors and local government to meet the ever expanding and manifold demands. When the city goes urban, its residents may suffer from various privacy and security issues due to smart city applications vulnerabilities. Abstract:Today's cities face many challenges due to population growth, aging population, pedestrian and vehicular traffic congestion, water usage increase, increased electricity demands, crumbling physical infrastructure of buildings, roads, water sewage, power grid, and declining health care services. Moreover, major trends indicate the global urbanization of society, and the associated pressures it brings, will continue to accelerate. One of the approaches to assist in solving some of the challenges is to deploy extensive IT technology. It has been recognized that cyber-technology plays a key role in improving quality of people's lives, strengthening business and helping government agencies serve citizens better. In this white paper, we discuss the benefits and challenges of cyber-technologies within "Smart Cities", especially the IoT (Internet of Things) for smart communities, which means considering the benefits and challenges of IoT cyber-technologies on smart cities physical infrastructures and their human stakeholders. To point out the IoT challenges, we will first present the framework within which IoT lives, and then proceed with the challenges, conclusions and recommendations.

Abstract:A city is smart when investment in traditional and modern infrastructure, human and social capital, fuel well being, high quality of life, and sustainable economic development. The Smart City paradigm is driven by technological evolution in the field of Information and Communication Technologies, and more specifically the paradigms of Internet of Things, Industrial Internet of Things and their confluence with Cyber Physical Systems. Smart Cities present a number of application domains that are related to their critical infrastructures, including energy and transport. These domains present needs similar to the industrial manufacturing environment utilizing smart devices and employing control automation for their applications. They could thus be labeled as “industrial domains” in the wider sense. This paper presents three application domains associated with Smart Cities, namely Smart Lighting, Smart Buildings / Energy, and Smart Urban Mobility, identifies their requirements and challenges and reviews existing solutions.

Abstract:Abstract This paper explores the concept of smart cities and the role of the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning (ML) in realizing a data-centric smart environment. Smart cities leverage technology and data to improve the quality of life for citizens and enhance the efficiency of urban services. IoT and machine learning have emerged as key technologies for enabling smart city solutions that rely on large-scale data collection, analysis, and decision-making. This paper presents an overview of smart cities’ various applications and discusses the challenges associated with implementing IoT and machine learning in urban environments. The paper also compares different case studies of successful smart city implementations utilizing IoT and machine learning technologies. The findings suggest that these technologies have the potential to transform urban environments and enable the creation of more livable, sustainable, and efficient cities. However, significant challenges remain regarding data privacy, security, and ethical considerations, which must be addressed to realize the full potential of smart cities.

Abstract:The recent proliferation of ubiquitous computing technologies has led to the emergence of urban computing that aims to provide intelligent services to inhabitants of smart cities. Urban computing deals with enormous amounts of data collected from sensors and other sources in a smart city. In this article, we investigated and highlighted the role of urban computing in sustainable smart cities. In addition, a taxonomy was conceived that categorized the existing studies based on urban data, approaches, applications, enabling technologies, and implications. In this context, recent developments were elucidated. To cope with the engendered challenges of smart cities, we outlined some crucial use cases of urban computing. Furthermore, prominent use cases of urban computing in sustainable smart cities (e.g., planning in smart cities, the environment in smart cities, energy consumption in smart cities, transportation in smart cities, government policy in smart cities, and business processes in smart cities) for smart urbanization were also elaborated. Finally, several research challenges (such as cognitive cybersecurity, air quality, the data sparsity problem, data movement, 5G technologies, scaling via the analysis and harvesting of energy, and knowledge versus privacy) and their possible solutions in a new perspective were discussed explicitly.

Abstract:Abstract Cities are expected to face daunting challenges due to the increasing population in the near future, putting immense strain on urban resources and infrastructures. In recent years, numerous studies have been developed to investigate different aspects of implementing IoT in the context of smart cities. This has led the current body of literature to become fairly fragmented. Correspondingly, this study adopts a hybrid literature review technique consisting of bibliometric analysis, text-mining analysis, and content analysis to systematically analyse the literature connected to IoT-enabled smart cities (IESCs). As a result, 843 publications were selected for detailed examination between 2010 to 2022. The findings identified four research areas in IESCs that received the highest attention and constituted the conceptual structure of the field. These include (i) data analysis, (ii) network and communication management and technologies, (iii) security and privacy management, and (iv) data collection. Further, the current body of knowledge related to these areas was critically analysed. The review singled out seven major challenges associated with the implementation of IESCs that should be addressed by future studies, including energy consumption and environmental issues, data analysis, issues of privacy and security, interoperability, ethical issues, scalability and adaptability as well as the incorporation of IoT systems into future development plans of cities. Finally, the study revealed some recommendations for those interconnected challenges in implementing IESCs and effective integrations within policies to support net-zero futures.

Abstract:With the flourishing and advancement of the IoT, the smart city has become an emerging paradigm, consisting of ubiquitous sensing, heterogeneous network infrastructure, and intelligent information processing and control systems. A smart city can monitor the physical world in real time, and provide intelligent services to both local residents and travelers in terms of transportation, healthcare, environment, entertainment, and energy. However, security and privacy concerns arise, since smart city applications not only collect a wide range of privacy-sensitive information from people and their social circles, but also control city facilities and influence people’s lives. In this article, we investigate security and privacy in smart city applications. Specifically, we first introduce promising smart city applications and architecture. Then we discuss several security and privacy challenges in these applications. Some research efforts are subsequently presented to address these security and privacy challenges for intelligent healthcare, transportation, and smart energy. Finally, we point out some open issues for future research.

Abstract:The smart city emerged as a model with the rapid growth of robust information and communication technology and the development of ubiquitous sensing technology. A smart city offers enhanced social facilities, transport and accessibility while promoting sustainability by using different sensors to gather data from the surroundings. The data collected can then be used to control urban infrastructure, such as traffic congestion, water supply, environmental monitoring, food services, and more. The smart city can track people’s actions and deliver intelligent travel, intelligent healthcare, entertainment, and other services. Dynamic data change includes intelligent and systems solutions for the functioning of these networks to ensure confusion about events in smart cities. Recent advances in machine learning and artificial information allow intelligent cities to effectively deliver services through a reduction in resource consumption. Cloud-based machine learning models enable resource-restricted devices to interconnect and optimize efficiency. The emerging data collection and device designs are targeted at reducing energy savings rather than risks to privacy and security. Thus, the security and privacy concerns remain as intelligent city networks not only collect information from heterogeneous nodes which are the weakest link and susceptible to cyber-attack. In this chapter, we address security issues in smart city applications; and corresponding countermeasures using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Some attempts to address these protection and privacy problems are then presented for smart health, transport, and smart energy.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 5G are establishing the building blocks of the post human smart city. These high impact industrial and commercial applications are contextualized within the evolutionary development and hierarchy of smart city functions. By exploring their inter-relationship and co-dependencies of the systems functions and subsystems at structural, operational and strategic levels, we can begin to visualize the impact these technologies will have on the design, operations and DNA of smart cities. Building on a combination of the hardware infrastructure that enables smart cities and diverse forms of AI and their capabilities and applications, smart city functions — Smart Mobility, Smart Environment, Smart People, Smart Governance, Smart Economy and Smart Living — are connected and optimized as individual and collective functions within an integrated city operating system. This new alignment allows cities to function much better, reducing noise within system functionality while creating efficiencies. Edge computing is an example of system optimization through the reduction of energy consumption, more efficient data processing and overcoming latency and bandwidth issues. The facilitated convergence process, enabled by AI, contributes to the desired outcome. The true smart city is not just about technology, but convergence on a new holistic, biomimetic system architecture level that optimizes the health and wellbeing of the users, the city and the operating system itself.

Abstract:A smart city represents an improvement of today’s cities, both functionally and structurally, that strategically utilizes several smart factors, capitalizing on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to increase the city’s sustainable growth and strengthen the city’s functions, while ensuring the citizens’ enhanced quality of life and health. Cities can be viewed as a microcosm of interconnected “objects” with which citizens interact daily, which represents an extremely interesting example of a cyber physical system (CPS), where the continuous monitoring of a city’s status occurs through sensors and processors applied within the real-world infrastructure. Each object in a city can be both the collector and distributor of information regarding mobility, energy consumption, air pollution as well as potentially offering cultural and tourist information. As a consequence, the cyber and real worlds are strongly linked and interdependent in a smart city. New services can be deployed when needed, and evaluation mechanisms can be set up to assess the health and success of a smart city. In particular, the objectives of creating ICT-enabled smart city environments target (but are not limited to) improved city services; optimized decision-making; the creation of smart urban infrastructures; the orchestration of cyber and physical resources; addressing challenging urban issues, such as environmental pollution, transportation management, energy usage and public health; the optimization of the use and benefits of next generation (5G and beyond) communication; the capitalization of social networks and their analysis; support for tactile internet applications; and the inspiration of urban citizens to improve their quality of life. However, the large scale deployment of cyber-physical-social systems faces a series of challenges and issues (e.g., energy efficiency requirements, architecture, protocol stack design, implementation, and security), which requires more smart sensing and computing methods as well as advanced networking and communications technologies to provide more pervasive cyber-physical-social services. In this paper, we discuss the challenges, the state-of-the-art, and the solutions to a set of currently unresolved key questions related to CPSs and smart cities.

Abstract:Abstract The complex and interdependent nature of smart cities raises significant political, technical, and socioeconomic challenges for designers, integrators and organisations involved in administrating these new entities. An increasing number of studies focus on the security, privacy and risks within smart cities, highlighting the threats relating to information security and challenges for smart city infrastructure in the management and processing of personal data. This study analyses many of these challenges, offers a valuable synthesis of the relevant key literature, and develops a smart city interaction framework. The study is organised around a number of key themes within smart cities research: privacy and security of mobile devices and services; smart city infrastructure, power systems, healthcare, frameworks, algorithms and protocols to improve security and privacy, operational threats for smart cities, use and adoption of smart services by citizens, use of blockchain and use of social media. This comprehensive review provides a useful perspective on many of the key issues and offers key direction for future studies. The findings of this study can provide an informative research framework and reference point for academics and practitioners.

Abstract:The interaction among different Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and devices become massive and insecure over the Internet as we probe to smart cities. These heterogeneous devices produce an enormous amount of data that is vulnerable to various malicious threats. The generated data need to be processed and analyzed in a secure fashion to make smart decisions. The smart urban planning is becoming a reality through the mass information generated by the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper exhibits a novel architecture, SafeCity, that limelight the ecosystem of smart cities consists of cameras, sensors, and other real-world physical devices. SafeCity is a three-layer architecture, i.e., a data security layer, a data computational layer, and a decision-making layer. At the first layer, payload-based symmetric encryption is used to secure the data from intruders by exchanging only the authentic data among the physical devices. The second layer is used for the computation of secured data. Finally, the third layer extracts visions from data. The secured exchange of data is ensured by using Raspberry Pi boards while the computation of data is tested on trustworthy datasets, using the Hadoop platform. The assessments disclose that SafeCity presents precious insights into a secured smart city in the context of sensors based IoT environment.
