Abstract:A Smart City can be described as an urbanized town, wherein Information and Communication Technology are at the core of its infrastructure. Smart cities serve several innovative and advanced services for its citizens in order to improve the quality of their life. A Smart City must encompass all the forthcoming and highly advanced and integrated technology, the essence of which is the Internet of Things (IoT). Smart technologies like smart governance, smart communication, smart environment, smart transportation, smart energy, waste and water management applications promise the smart growth of the city, but at the same time, it needs to enforce pervasive security and privacy of the large volume of data associated with these smart applications. Special smart measures are required to cover urbanization trends in the innovative administration of urban transference and various smart services to the residents, visitors and local government to meet the ever expanding and manifold demands. When the city goes urban, its residents may suffer from various privacy and security issues due to smart city applications vulnerabilities. This chapter delivers a comprehensive overview of the security and privacy threats, vulnerabilities, and challenges of a smart city project; and suggests solutions in order to facilitate smart city development and governance.

Abstract:With the flourishing and advancement of the IoT, the smart city has become an emerging paradigm, consisting of ubiquitous sensing, heterogeneous network infrastructure, and intelligent information processing and control systems. A smart city can monitor the physical world in real time, and provide intelligent services to both local residents and travelers in terms of transportation, healthcare, environment, entertainment, and energy. However, security and privacy concerns arise, since smart city applications not only collect a wide range of privacy-sensitive information from people and their social circles, but also control city facilities and influence people’s lives. In this article, we investigate security and privacy in smart city applications. Specifically, we first introduce promising smart city applications and architecture. Then we discuss several security and privacy challenges in these applications. Some research efforts are subsequently presented to address these security and privacy challenges for intelligent healthcare, transportation, and smart energy. Finally, we point out some open issues for future research.

Abstract:The smart city emerged as a model with the rapid growth of robust information and communication technology and the development of ubiquitous sensing technology. A smart city offers enhanced social facilities, transport and accessibility while promoting sustainability by using different sensors to gather data from the surroundings. The data collected can then be used to control urban infrastructure, such as traffic congestion, water supply, environmental monitoring, food services, and more. The smart city can track people’s actions and deliver intelligent travel, intelligent healthcare, entertainment, and other services. Dynamic data change includes intelligent and systems solutions for the functioning of these networks to ensure confusion about events in smart cities. Recent advances in machine learning and artificial information allow intelligent cities to effectively deliver services through a reduction in resource consumption. Cloud-based machine learning models enable resource-restricted devices to interconnect and optimize efficiency. The emerging data collection and device designs are targeted at reducing energy savings rather than risks to privacy and security. Thus, the security and privacy concerns remain as intelligent city networks not only collect information from heterogeneous nodes which are the weakest link and susceptible to cyber-attack. In this chapter, we address security issues in smart city applications; and corresponding countermeasures using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Some attempts to address these protection and privacy problems are then presented for smart health, transport, and smart energy.

Abstract:Abstract The complex and interdependent nature of smart cities raises significant political, technical, and socioeconomic challenges for designers, integrators and organisations involved in administrating these new entities. An increasing number of studies focus on the security, privacy and risks within smart cities, highlighting the threats relating to information security and challenges for smart city infrastructure in the management and processing of personal data. This study analyses many of these challenges, offers a valuable synthesis of the relevant key literature, and develops a smart city interaction framework. The study is organised around a number of key themes within smart cities research: privacy and security of mobile devices and services; smart city infrastructure, power systems, healthcare, frameworks, algorithms and protocols to improve security and privacy, operational threats for smart cities, use and adoption of smart services by citizens, use of blockchain and use of social media. This comprehensive review provides a useful perspective on many of the key issues and offers key direction for future studies. The findings of this study can provide an informative research framework and reference point for academics and practitioners.

Abstract:Smart cities rely on dynamic and real-time data to enable smart urban applications such as intelligent transport and epidemics detection. However, the streaming of big data from IoT devices, especially from mobile platforms like pedestrians and cars, raises significant privacy concerns. Future autonomous vehicles will generate, collect and consume significant volumes of data to be utilized in delivering safe and efficient transportation solutions. The sensed data will, inherently, contain personally identifiable and attributable information - both external (other vehicles, environmental) and internal (driver, passengers, devices). The autonomous vehicles are connected to the infrastructure cloud (e.g., Amazon), the edge cloud, and also the mobile cloud (vehicle to vehicle). Clearly these different entities must co-operate and interoperate in a timely fashion when routing and transferring the highly dynamic data. In order to maximise the availability and utility of the sensed data, stakeholders must have confidence that the data they transmit, receive, aggregate and reason on is appropriately secured and protected throughout. There are many different metaphors for providing end-to-end security for data exchanges, but they commonly require a management and control sidechannel. This work proposes a scalable smart city privacy-preserving architecture named Authorized Analytics that enables each node (e.g. vehicle) to divulge (contextually) local privatised data. Authorized Analytics is shown to scale gracefully to IoT scope deployments.

Abstract:Smart cities assure the masses a higher quality of life through digital interconnectivity, leading to increased efficiency and accessibility in cities. In addition, a huge amount of data is being exchanged through smart devices, networks, cloud infrastructure, big data analysis and Internet of Things (IoT) applications in the various private and public sectors, such as critical infrastructures, financial sectors, healthcare, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). However, these sectors require maintaining certain security mechanisms to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of personal and critical information. However, unfortunately, organizations fail to maintain their security posture in terms of security mechanisms and controls, which leads to data breach incidents either intentionally or inadvertently due to the vulnerabilities in their information management systems that either malicious insiders or attackers exploit. In this paper, we highlight the importance of data breaches and issues related to information leakage incidents. In particular, the impact of data breaching incidents and the reasons contributing to such incidents affect the citizens' well-being. In addition, this paper also discusses various preventive measures such as security mechanisms, laws, standards, procedures, and best practices, including follow-up mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Integrating the various embedded devices and systems in our environment enables an Internet of Things (IoT) for a smart city. The IoT will generate tremendous amount of data that can be leveraged for safety, efficiency, and infotainment applications and services for city residents. The management of this voluminous data through its lifecycle is fundamental to the realization of smart cities. Therefore, in contrast to existing surveys on smart cities we provide a data-centric perspective, describing the fundamental data management techniques employed to ensure consistency, interoperability, granularity, and reusability of the data generated by the underlying IoT for smart cities. Essentially, the data lifecycle in a smart city is dependent on tightly coupled data management with cross-cutting layers of data security and privacy, and supporting infrastructure. Therefore, we further identify techniques employed for data security and privacy, and discuss the networking and computing technologies that enable smart cities. We highlight the achievements in realizing various aspects of smart cities, present the lessons learned, and identify limitations and research challenges.

Abstract:The interaction among different Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and devices become massive and insecure over the Internet as we probe to smart cities. These heterogeneous devices produce an enormous amount of data that is vulnerable to various malicious threats. The generated data need to be processed and analyzed in a secure fashion to make smart decisions. The smart urban planning is becoming a reality through the mass information generated by the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper exhibits a novel architecture, SafeCity, that limelight the ecosystem of smart cities consists of cameras, sensors, and other real-world physical devices. SafeCity is a three-layer architecture, i.e., a data security layer, a data computational layer, and a decision-making layer. At the first layer, payload-based symmetric encryption is used to secure the data from intruders by exchanging only the authentic data among the physical devices. The second layer is used for the computation of secured data. Finally, the third layer extracts visions from data. The secured exchange of data is ensured by using Raspberry Pi boards while the computation of data is tested on trustworthy datasets, using the Hadoop platform. The assessments disclose that SafeCity presents precious insights into a secured smart city in the context of sensors based IoT environment.

Abstract:Building smart services for smart cities has become a significant focus of the Internet of Things (IoT). These IoT devices are able to sense their surroundings and react appropriately. Smart city applications emphasize the necessity of safe data sharing across heterogeneous devices. Certain behaviors taken while sharing could aim at compromising security, privacy, and integrity. The centralized repository that is currently in place made the majority of hacks possible. The sharing of sensitive data and authentication are essential stages in guaranteeing the security of applications associated with IoT. Blockchain and IoT are two widely used technologies, with IoT focusing on data collection via various devices and blockchain enabling data integrity. This paper introduces a novel blockchain-based framework to ensure the security and integrity aspects of IoT data. The proposed SecPrivPreserve framework ensures security through various phases including initialization, registration, data protection, authentication, data access control, validation, and data sharing and download. Diverse security mechanisms such as passwords (OTP), encryption, and hashing have been deployed in various phases to strengthen security merits confidentiality, privacy, and integrity. Since the SecPrivPreserve framework is simulated in a permissioned blockchain platform the merits and tamper-proof and non-repudiation are automatically considered. Moreover, data protection uses Chebyshev polynomials and interpolation. The presented framework has experimented with Fabric SDK. The experimental results of the proposed framework are compared with the BaseLine state-of-the-frameworks, The experimental analysis reveals that the proposed SecPrivPreserve approach achieved 34 Sec improvement in terms of responsiveness 94 Sec as computational time, encryption quality as 0.87 Sec and 0.82 Sec for detection rate.

Abstract:A city is a large human settlement that serves the people who live there, and a smart city is a concept of how cities might better serve their residents through new forms of technology. In this paper, we focus on four major smart city domains according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: smart utility, smart transportation, smart homes, and smart healthcare. Numerous IoT applications have been developed to achieve the intelligence that we desire in our smart domains, ranging from personal gadgets such as health trackers and smart watches to large-scale industrial IoT systems such as nuclear and energy management systems. However, many of the existing smart city IoT solutions can be made better by considering the suitability of their security strategies. Inappropriate system security designs generally occur in two scenarios: first, system designers recognize the importance of security but are unsure of where, when, or how to implement it; and second, system designers try to fit traditional security designs to meet the smart city security context. Thus, the objective of this paper is to provide application designers with the missing security link they may need in order to improve their security designs. By evaluating the specific context of each smart city domain and the context-specific security requirements, we aim to provide directions on when, where, and how they should implement security strategies and the possible security challenges they need to consider. In addition, we present a new perspective on security issues in smart cities from a data-centric viewpoint by referring to the reference architecture, the Activity-Network-Things (ANT)-centric architecture. This architecture is built upon the concept of “security in a zero-trust environment", to achieve end-to-end data security. By doing so, we reduce the security risks posed by new system interactions or unanticipated user behaviors while avoiding the hassle of regularly upgrading security models.

Abstract:Smart cities aim to deliver smart services that rely on emerging technologies to their users. In order for users to get the provided services, they need to share their personal information with different parties. However, sharing personal information in smart cities may impact the privacy of that information. Thus, there is a need to address privacy risks relevant to sharing personal information in smart cities. This study aims to address this issue by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) to identify and extract privacy risks, impacts, and existing controls associated with sharing personal information, considering elements involved and interacting during the sharing activity in smart cities. A set of 83 selected studies in both academic and industry fields were reviewed, and the results were categorised into three main groups: privacy risks, impacts, and controls. Moreover, the implications and future research directions were also reported. The proposed privacy risk taxonomy will provide a much-needed foundation for the industry and research community, intending to research and evaluate privacy risk frameworks and design solutions for sharing personal information in smart cities.

Abstract:The growing availability of mobile devices has lead to an arising development of smart cities services that share a huge amount of (personal) information and data. Without accurate and verified management, they could become severe back-doors for security and privacy. In this paper, we propose a smart city infrastructure able to integrate a distributed privacy-preserving identity management solution based on attribute-based credentials (p-ABC), a user-centric Consent Manager, and a GDPR-based Access Control mechanism so as to guarantee the enforcement of the GDPR's provisions. Thus, the infrastructure supports the definition of specific purpose, collection of data, regulation of access to personal data, and users' consents, while ensuring selective and minimal disclosure of personal information as well as user's unlinkability across service and identity providers. The proposal has been implemented, integrated, and evaluated in a fully-fledged environment consisting of MiMurcia, the Smart City project for the city of Murcia, CaPe, an industrial consent management system, and GENERAL_D, an academic GDPR-based access control system, showing the feasibility.

Abstract:This paper highlights the benefits and challenges of smart cities, which leverage technology to offer a wide range of services to citizens. While these services have the potential to greatly improve the quality of life in metropolitan areas, they also raise significant privacy and security concerns. The study emphasizes the need to employ "privacy by design" principles to ensure that personal data is protected throughout the entire lifecycle of data, and data owners have the self-control to manage their data according to their preferences. Smart contracts, built on blockchain technology, offer a secure and transparent way of conducting transactions, particularly in e-governance, and automating processes. By leveraging these technologies, smart cities can address the privacy and security challenges they face while continuing to offer cutting-edge services to their inhabitants. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the importance of a proactive approach to privacy and security in the development and implementation of smart cities.

Abstract:As the globally increasing population drives rapid urbanisation in various parts of the world, there is a great need to deliberate on the future of the cities worth living. In particular, as modern smart cities embrace more and more data-driven artificial intelligence services, it is worth remembering that technology can facilitate prosperity, wellbeing, urban livability, or social justice, but only when it has the right analog complements (such as well-thought out policies, mature institutions, responsible governance); and the ultimate objective of these smart cities is to facilitate and enhance human welfare and social flourishing. Researchers have shown that various technological business models and features can in fact contribute to social problems such as extremism, polarization, misinformation, and Internet addiction. In the light of these observations, addressing the philosophical and ethical questions involved in ensuring the security, safety, and interpretability of such AI algorithms that will form the technological bedrock of future cities assumes paramount importance. Globally there are calls for technology to be made more humane and human-centered. In this paper, we analyze and explore key challenges including security, robustness, interpretability, and ethical (data and algorithmic) challenges to a successful deployment of AI in human-centric applications, with a particular emphasis on the convergence of these concepts/challenges. We provide a detailed review of existing literature on these key challenges and analyze how one of these challenges may lead to others or help in solving other challenges. The paper also advises on the current limitations, pitfalls, and future directions of research in these domains, and how it can fill the current gaps and lead to better solutions. We believe such rigorous analysis will provide a baseline for future research in the domain.

Abstract:Personal and home sensors generate valuable information that could be used in Smart Cities. Unfortunately, typically, this data is locked out and used only by application/system developer. While vendors are to blame, one should consider also the "binary nature" of data access. Specifically, either owner has full control over her data (e.g. in a "closed system"), or she completely looses control, when the data is "opened". In this context, we propose, a semantic technologies-based, authorization and privacy control framework that enables user to maintain flexible, yet manageable data access control policies. The proposed approach is described in detail, including implementation and testing.

Abstract:Smart cities use technology to improve traffic patterns, energy distribution, air quality and more. The elements of a smart city can also increase the convenience for its citizens, by integrating IT technology into many aspects of citizen interaction such as simplifying access to many of the city services. The fields of healthcare, education, culture, and shopping can all be integrated into the core of a smart city to create an infrastructure that allows citizens to live more conveniently. Actual deployment cases exist in U.S., Europe, Singapore, and South Korea. With this environment, we need to think ahead about cybersecurity and prepare countermeasures as the cyberattacks in a smart city can threaten the lives of its citizens. In this paper, we examine smart city security threats from a multilayered perspective, targeting representative elements that make up a smart city. A summary of attack scenarios and threat countermeasures are also described.

Abstract:Smart city services, smart applications and smart devices form an ecosystem of tools and artifacts that challenge, and times even disrupt, conventions, norms, and rites of behavior, thus prompting diverse behavioral changes at the level of the individual, the group, and the society at large. In this view, smart city may be viewed as a – one of its kind – laboratory to query the complex human-computer relationship from a multi-dimensional perspective. By adopting this perspective, this paper queries the existing smart city surveillance systems to identify their key limitations and sources of frequently justified controversies. It is argued that to bypass these – first – the value of mesh-technology should be explored. It is also argued that – second – it is necessary not only to bring citizens back in the discussion on smart city, but also to highlight the mechanisms by means of which they might be involved in the co-design of smart city solutions and in urban decision-making. To bridge these two imperatives, smart city is conceptualized as a smart service system and, consequently, a wireless integrated mesh-technology enhanced (WIMTE) smart city surveillance system is elaborated.
