Abstract:The gas charging influences on dissolution, cementation, and clay transformation are still largely unknown during the migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons. The reservoirs in the upper Huangliu Formation of the XF13 block in the Yinggehai Basin, South China Sea, were charged by CO2 and gaseous hydrocarbons, offering us an ideal opportunity to quantitatively study the diagenetic differences caused by gas charging with different compositions. The techniques and methods used in this study include optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence, x-ray diffraction, chemical analysis of formation water, stable isotope analyses, and fluid inclusion examination. These analyses demonstrate that the late-stage charging of CO2-rich thermal fluid in the wells near the diapir zone modified porosity, permeability, temperature, fluid pH, and contents of K+, Na+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and other ions. Natural gas accumulations with high maturity and high CO2 contents presented at wells XF13A and XF13B near the diapir zone resulted from episodic mixing and modification. Wells far from the diapir zone (e.g., XF13E and XF13F) mostly show alkane enrichment. Late-stage charging of CO2-rich thermal fluids at wells XF13A and XF13B (in a closed system with episodic semiopen events) has resulted in significant dissolution and caused reservoirs with high porosity but low permeability. In contrast, wells far from the diapir zone were only charged by early-stage hydrocarbons, and the porosity and permeability are relatively high. This study is important in predicting reservoir quality according to gas compositions of reservoirs.

Abstract:With the advancement of mining and exploration technology, tight sandstone gas reservoirs in coal-bearing strata have greatly attracted people's attention. As a surface property of tight sandstone, wettability is critical in gas recovering process. The sedimentary microfacies indirectly affect the sandstone wettability by controlling its composition and structure. It was found that in general, the sandstone samples deposited in sedimentary microfacies with a strong hydrodynamic force, such as subaqueous distributary channel, the barrier bar and sand flat are strongly-moderately water wet with higher gas content and higher expected gas recovery, while the sandstone samples deposited in sedimentary microfacies with weak hydrodynamic force or high interstitial contents are usually weakly water wet with lower gas content and lower expected gas recovery.

Abstract:By using the technique of generation kinetics of molecule carbon isotopes in natural gas,the effective gas-source rocks and migration-accumulation history were systematically investigated for LW3-1 gasfield.The results have showed that the effective gas source area in the gasfield is in Enping Formation of shallow lake-swamp facies,with its present burial depth between 4 600 and 6 000 m,and that this gasfield is characterized by episodical and cumulative accumulation and later forming of gas pools,and still in the effective gas-charge stage currently due to its effective charge period from 8 to 0 Ma.All these conceptions will be very helpful to the future gas exploration in Baiyun sag deep water area,Pearl River Mouth basin.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of low logging interpretation accuracy and fluid identification in shale and calcium-bearing formations in the study area, this paper uses the effective medium theory and electric double layer theory, combined with artificial core technology, to carry out the first quantitative study of the influence of calcareous on rock resistivity, and establishes a conductive model for the evaluation of the oil and gas properties of shale and calcium-bearing formations. First, considering the salt exclusion effect of clay pore water and its dispersion distribution, and an improved Berg model was established. Compared with the original Berg model, the improved Berg model achieved a higher interpretation accuracy. Second, artificial cores with different calcium and clay contents were designed and prepared using artificial core technology. A quantitative formula describing the relationship between the cementation exponent m and the calcium and clay content was established and combined with the improved Berg model to build an effective medium HB resistivity model suitable for shale and calcium-bearing formations. Finally, the hierarchical decomposition crossplot approach was used to identify the calcareous cemented rock layers, then the reservoir parameters were calculated. The new model is applied to the quantitative evaluation of reservoir logging, and the comparison with the oil test results indicates that the new model established in this paper can be applied to the quantitative evaluation of reservoir logging in this area, and the corresponding evaluation techniques provided a good reference for logging interpretation and evaluation in other corresponding areas.

Abstract:Daqing is a continental heterogeneous oil field. After many years development under water flooding, a multi-pressure system has formed in the reservoir. Under high density of mud in infill drilling, now filtration potentials can′t be ignored as that at early development stage. Due to the effect of low salinity water injection, the diverse aberrances of diffusion-absorption potential have been discovered in different level layers watered out. The aberrant spontaneous potentials formed by the stack of these filtration potentials with diffusion-absorption potential will have influence on the correct interpretation of flooded zones and the net pay thickness of sandstone. On the basis of geophysical logging principle, the methods for calculating the values of diffusion and adsorption potential and filtration potential of different kinds of reservoir were suggested and were applied to the correction of the distortion of SP logs.
Geological evaluation and gas bearing analysis for shale reservoir in Ziyun-Luodian typical area of southern Guizhou province, China

Abstract:The Ziyun-Luodian area of southern Guizhou province in China is chosen as the research area and the Dawuba formation in Carboniferous system is the target stratum in this paper. Combined with laboratory experiments and mathematical analyses, geological evaluations on organic geochemistry, physical property of the reservoir, and gas bearing feature are all studied, and geological controls on gas occurrence are then analyzed. The following conclusions are achieved. The organic type is mainly II 2 or III. TOC is generally in a range of 1%–3%, and R o,max ranges from 1.7% to 4.4%, with an average value of 2.4%. Mineral compositions are mainly clay and quartz, with a few calcite and dolomite. The Specific surface area ranges from 6.6 to 29.8 m 2 /g, with an average value of 15.2 m 2 /g, and the pore volume varies from 0.012 to 0.046 cm 3 /g, with an average value of about 0.02 cm 3 /g. There is a strongly and positively linear relationship between specific surface area and pore volume. The porosity is mostly in the range of 1%–3%, with an average value of 1.8%. Most of permeability is below 0.01 mD, with an average value of about 0.004 mD. There is an exponential and positive relationship between porosity and permeability. The gas content is generally below 2.0 m 3 /t. There are three obvious correlations for gas content versus buried depth ranges of 500–700 m, 700–1,000 m, and 2,700–3,000 m. TOC influences gas content in a linear mode, and R o,max influences gas content positively. The gas content has a positive relationship with clay mineral and a negative relationship with sapropelic percentage. The porosity and permeability are both positively correlated with gas content. The pore volume has a positive trend with gas content, and the specific surface area has a positively and strongly linear relationship with gas content.

Abstract:Achieving a thorough understanding of how primary sedimentary granularity drives considerable heterogeneity in internal reservoir attributes of terrigenous fine-grained deposits is of great significance. We investigated the quantitative differentiation and its corresponding driving forces of physical reservoir properties and pore-structure characteristics of silty-mud sediments in the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation (SW China) using a multi-method approach. The results show that the micro-mesopore volume and surface area of mudstones/shales are apparently higher than those of silty mudstones and a remarkable threefold rise in average permeability also presents. Extensively distributed bitumen pores occurring mostly along brittle mineral grains or forming clay-organic complexes make considerable contributions to shrinking microcracks. Furthermore, an evidently higher concentration of clay minerals in mudstone/shale reservoirs is primarily responsible for development of the two types of clay inter-crystalline pores distributed along grain aggregates and between well-oriented platelets. These two major causes facilitate the formation of micro-bedding fractures/non-bedding microfractures and connected fracture and pore-fracture networks, and also high-quality argillaceous reservoirs by strongly enhancing storage spaces and seepage capacities. Finally, a conceptual model is established for interpreting a differential reservoir-forming mechanism and corresponding two-sided effects on petrophysical and reservoir quality properties for continental silty-mud sediments.

Abstract:A gas field, China, the target reservoirs are mainly delta front depositions, which are tight, thin and below the tuning thickness. In order to characterise the thin effective reservoir and porosity distribution in this field, a geostatistical inversion and co-simulation were performed. Using geostatistical inversion technology we can integrate the information of well logs, geological constraints, geostatistical parameters and seismic data to create multiple high resolution realizations, resulting in highly detailed elastic volumes of P-Impedance, Vp/Vs, density, as well as lithofacies distribution and the co-simulated porosity. The combination analysis of the results can be used to propose new drilling locations. New well data shows the validity of this technology, maximum solve the problem of the low porosity, low permeability and thin reservoir.

Abstract:Quaternary mudstone biogas reservoirs in the Qaidam Basin have shown great potential. However, complex pore structures with high clay contents and high heterogeneity limit the understanding of the storage and migration principles of these reservoirs. In this paper, HPMI and nitrogen adsorption experiments, in combination with NMR experiments under water saturation, centrifugation, various drying temperatures and other conditions, were adopted to determine the pore structure characteristics. Specifically, the reservoir space types and pore radius distribution characteristics were clarified. The cutoff values for different types of pores were identified based on the water-saturated mudstone NMR T 2 spectra for full aperture distribution scales jointly characterized by mercury injection and nitrogen adsorption experiments. Furthermore, the three pore components and the saturation of different fluids were obtained. The research results indicate that the mudstone biogas reservoir has developed various reservoir spaces, and the pore size is primarily in the micronanometer range. The average total porosity reaches 27.28%, but the proportion of movable water pores is only 9.23% with poor fluid mobility, and the fluids in the pores are mostly capillary-bound water and clay-bound water. Among the different lithologies, argillaceous sand is more likely to become a good production layer.

Geological Constraints on the Gas-Bearing Properties in High-Rank Coal: A Case Study of the Upper Permian Longtan Formation from the Songzao Coalfield, Chongqing, Southwest China

Abstract:The Permian Longtan Formation in the Songzao coalfield, Southwest China, has abundant coalbed methane (CBM) stored in high-rank coals. However, few studies have been performed on the mechanism underlying the differences in CBM gas content in high-rank coal. This study focuses on the characterization of coal geochemical, reservoir physical, and gas-bearing properties in the coal seams M6, M7, M8, and M12 based on the CBM wells and coal exploration boreholes, discusses the effects of depositional environment, tectono-thermal evolution, and regional geological structure associated with CBM, and identifies major geological constraints on the gas-bearing properties in high-rank coal. The results show that high-rank coals are characterized by high TOC contents (31.49~51.32 wt%), high Tmax and R0 values (averaging 539 °C and 2.17%), low HI values (averaging 15.21 mg of HC/g TOC), high porosity and low permeability, and high gas-bearing contents, indicating a post-thermal maturity and a good CBM production potential. Changes in the shallow bay–tidal flat–lagoon environment triggered coal formation and provided the material basis for CBM generation. Multistage tectono-thermal evolution caused by the Emeishan mantle plume activity guaranteed the temperature and time for overmaturation and thermal metamorphism and added massive pyrolytic CBM, which improved the gas production potential. Good geological structural conditions, like enclosed fold regions, were shown to directly control CBM accumulation.

Abstract:Well logging interpretation and evaluation of reservoirs in horizontal wells plays an important role in shale gas exploration and development. The accuracy of the interpreted petrophysical parameters is directly affected by well logging curves. This study focuses on a horizontal well targeting deep shale gas layers in the Luzhou block, Southern Sichuan Basin. It employs an interactive forward and inversion scheme to precisely reconstruct the borehole trajectory using a comprehensive dataset encompassing well logs, mud logs, and seismic data. The research introduces a method for anisotropic correction of sonic log, crucial for calculating reservoir parameters, and assess payzone targeting in the horizontal well. The research results show that the interactive forward and inverse simulation method can achieve the recovery of horizontal well borehole trajectory and finely delineate the sublayers, improving the evaluation accuracy of platinum target drilling encounter ratio by over 6%. Numerically simulated acoustic wave can be used to carry out the anisotropy correction of acoustic wave in horizontal wells and calculate reservoir parameters, reducing the relative error in computed porosity to 1.72%. The comprehensive logging evaluation results from both geological and engineering aspects provide the data basis for planning the fracturing program of the shale gas horizontal well. This research has established a new method and idea for well logging evaluation in shale gas horizontal wells, marking a significant step toward integrating geological and engineering aspects in shale gas exploration.
