Abstract:High efficiencies, wide operation range and rapid response time have motivated the recent interest in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis for hydrogen generation with surplus electricity. However, degradation at high current densities and the associated mechanism has not been thoroughly explored so far. In this work, membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) from different suppliers are aged in a commercial PEM electrolyzer (2.5Nm3 H2 h−1), operating up to 4Acm−2 for more than 750h. In all cases, the cell voltage (Ecell) decreases during the testing period. Interestingly, the cells with Ir-black anodes exhibit the highest performance with the lowest precious metal loading (1mgcm−2). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) shows a progressive decrease in the specific exchange current, while the ohmic resistance decreases when doubling the nominal current density. This effect translates into an enhancement of cell efficiency at high current densities. However, Ir concurrently leaches out and diffuses into the membrane. No decrease in membrane thickness is observed at the end of the tests. High current densities do not lead to lowering the performance of the PEM electrolyzer over time, although MEA components degrade, in particular the anode.

Abstract:By 2030 up to 50% of energy is expected to be carried in the bonds of H2. Global electrolysis capacity must increase from the current 240 MW to an anticipated 300 GW in 2030 and 3500 GW in 2050 to enable this transition. Alkaline and PEM electrolyzers are commercially mature with the currently market share of new installations roughly an equal split between these technologies. However, each of these electrolyzers are associated with challenges – alkaline electrolyzers operate at low current density, and require high concentration electrolytes (30 wt% KOH) to conduct hydroxides through the porous electrode separator (I.e., Zirfon). PEM electrolyzers use a proton conductive membrane to enable high current densities, however, running the reaction in acidic electrolyte requires platinum group catalysts and component coatings that hinder scalability at 2050 targets. AEM water electrolyzers address both of these challenges by pairing anion exchange membrane with alkaline electrolyte to enable high current density operation, at high pressure, without noble metal catalysts. These attributes enable the most cost-effective green hydrogen - bringing the DOE hydrogen shot target of $1/kg within reach. Anion exchange membrane chemistries have previously hindered this type of electrolyzer – AEMs based on quaternary amines, or pendant imidazolium groups chemically degrade in concentrated alkaline electrolyte, and mechanically degrade (from swelling) in low concentration alkaline media. Ionomr's Aemion+ membranes are based on a sterically-protected polybenzimidazole chemistry and are chemically robust (stable in up to 10 M KOH), and exhibit low swelling to enable operation in low concentration electrolytes. These membranes are an enabling technology for long duration water and CO2 electrolysis. This talk highlights how Ionomr's Aemion+ membranes enable performance in excess of 1 A/cm2 at 1.8 V with non-PGM catalysts and a variety of configurations, and >4000 hours of durability in continuous operation. Abstract:Hydrogen is at the forefront of clean energy use and storage in the goal to drastically reduce anthropogenic carbon dioxide and combat global climate change. However, hydrogen production to-date is accomplished via steam methane reforming which, for every ton of hydrogen produced 5.5 tons of CO 2 is liberated. One viable technical solution for production of clean hydrogen is water electrolysis. To this end DOE has implemented the Hydrogen Earthshot initiative to cleanly produce hydrogen at 2 /kg by 2030. Of the several commercial water electrolysis technologies available, proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) currently offers the most benefits including operations at low temperature, differential pressure, and high current density (≥3 A/cm 2 ). Commercialization of PEMWE has advanced rapidly despite several significant disadvantages which include the necessity of scarce expensive platinum-group metal (PGM) catalysts, expensive perfluorinated membranes, and significant environmental impacts of perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) used in membrane production. The solution to these challenges is the development of alkaline exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) which retains the advantageous characteristics of PEMWE without the need for PGM catalysts or perfluorinated membranes. Here in, we report on our current progress of AEMWEs, which covers PGM-free catalyst development, low-cost and durable AEM development and electrode design development. From a commercial point of view, given a high-performance durable membrane, manufacturing MEAs is a critical next step toward commercialization. Therefore, development of an AEM with accessible thermal transitions prior to the onset of quaternary ammonium degradation is key to enabling proven MEA fabrication techniques such as hot-pressing and decal transfer of electrodes. Through a novel synthetic approach, we will describe the preparation of functionalized copolymers and terpolymers containing latent cross-linking functionality. Ultimately, we will demonstrate the manufacturability of MEAs from our PGM-free catalysts and membrane materials employing hot-pressing and decal transfer of electrodes along with single cell evaluations. We will also discuss factors that affect the degradation of AEMWEs and solutions to address these challenges.

Abstract:Hydrogen is regarded as the next-generation energy carriers for the future hydrogen economy. 1 Among the hydrogen production technologies, proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers is considered the favored approach for the implementation of the global hydrogen energy transformation due to its several benefits including high power density operation, low ohmic losses and differential pressure operation. However, (i) high cost mainly from the high platinum group metals (PGM) loading in the catalysts layers; (ii) low durability due to instability of the catalysts layers and membrane; and (iii) poor safety because of hydrogen crossover of PEM water electrolyzers have jeopardized their widespread commercialization. Currently, a new Department of Energy Consortium (H2NEW) has targeted hydrogen production from electrolysis, especially PEM water electrolysis, for use as a clean, sustainable fuel, which can achieve $2/kg hydrogen production cost by 2025. 2 This requires a balance between the performance, durability and scale-up cost of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for PEM water electrolyzers. In this work, we demonstrate the capability to fabricate large scale MEAs by the unique Reactive Spray Deposition Technology (RSDT), that have one order of magnitude lower PGM loadings in the catalyst layer than the state-of-the-art (SOA) designs, and activity and durability performance comparable to the SOA commercial MEAs. RSDT is a flame-based method that combines the catalysts synthesis and electrodes deposition processes into one step and thus substantially reduces the time and cost for their fabrication. 3–5 The RSDT fabricated MEA with 680 cm 2 geometric area electrodes, and loadings of 0.2 mg Pt /cm 2 in the cathode and 0.3 mg Ir /cm 2 in the anode has been tested at current density of 1.8 A cm -2 , 50 o C, and 400 psi differential hydrogen pressure. The initial steady-state test for over 250 hours, clearly shows excellent activity and stability. In addition, the RSDT fabricated MEA has integrated dual recombination layers that effectively reduce the hydrogen crossover to below 10 %LFL at all current densities from 0.58 to 1.8 A/cm 2 . Abstract:Water electrolysis powered by renewable sources such as wind or solar produces clean hydrogen gas, which is used for many industrial processes and will be essential in a future clean energy economy. Commercialized membrane electrolyzers use acidic proton exchange membranes (PEMs), which offer high performance but require the use of expensive precious-metal catalysts such as IrO 2 and Pt that are nominally stable under the locally acidic conditions. Anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers in principle offer the performance of PEM electrolyzers with the ability to use earth-abundant catalysts and inexpensive bipolar plate materials. I will present our fundamental work in understanding the chemical and electrochemical processes in earth-abundant water-oxidation catalysts, including the use of integrated reference-electrode device architectures and cross-sectional materials analysis, as well as progress in building high-performance AEM electrolyzers. Baseline systems operate at 1 A·cm -2 in pure water feed at < 2 V at a moderate temperature of ~70 °C using either IrO 2 or Co 3 O 4 anode catalyst layers, Versogen TP-85 alkaline ionomers, and stainless-steel porous transport layers. These devices, however, degrade rapidly compared to PEM electrolyzers. The voltage profile corresponding to degradation has initial fast (~10 mV/h) and steady-state slow components (~1 mV/h), which we link to chemical and structural changes in the ionomer catalyst reactive zone. We further discover that dynamic Fe-based OER catalysts – that have world record performance in traditional liquid alkaline electrolyzer systems – perform poorly with enhanced degradation rates in alkaline membrane electrolysis, illustrating fundamentally different chemical design principles for OER catalysts. Lastly, I will discuss these processes in electrolyzer devices and in model systems, as well as present promising new chemical strategies we have developed to mitigate degradation and enhance performance using novel ionomers and electrode catalyst compositions and architectures.

Abstract:The two major drawbacks of most renewable sources are intermittency and availability. Renewables will naturally need to be efficiently integrated with electrochemical methodologies for storage (batteries), conversion (fuel cells) and application (electrolysis, CO 2 reduction reactions). Alkaline anion exchange membranes (AAEM) have attracted considerable interest to navigate some of the economic hurdles native to polymer electrolyte membrane-based technologies. Despite many advances over the past decade, AAEM long-term stability towards hydroxide mediated degradation remains a significant challenge. Here we integrate anion exchange membrane synthesis, accelerated stress testing and characterization (structural, chemical, electrochemical) to understand and mitigate the effect of degradation of AAEM under electrochemical conditions on the performance of these materials. Abstract:Development of advanced low-temperature (LT) water electrolyzers (WEs) is of crucial importance for implementation of the Hydrogen Economy. This future green economy will eliminate the greenhouse gas emissions and stop the imminent global warming and climate change. “Green” hydrogen can be produced at large scale by integration of WEs with renewable energy sources. Currently, the low-temperature proton exchange membrane (PEM) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) WEs are considered to be the most advanced WEs that can be integrated with solar panels and wind turbines to produce large quantities of green H 2 . The main challenges that the state-of-the-art membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for LTWEs are currently facing are: (i) high cost because of the high platinum group metals (PGM) loadings in their catalysts layers; (ii) limited durability caused by the instability of the catalysts and the other cell components, and (iii) safety concerns associated with the hydrogen gas crossover and the absence of technologies that can effectively keep it below the safety level of the lower flammability limit (LFL) [1, 2, 3]. This work is aimed on designing of novel MEAs for LTWEs with dramatically reduced catalysts loadings, enhanced durability, and improved H 2 crossover capabilities. Reactive Spray Deposition Technology (RSDT) is used as an innovative methodology for designing of advanced catalysts, catalyst and recombination layers, and MEAs for LTWEs. The RSDT is a flame assisted method [4, 5] that combines the catalysts synthesis and deposition directly on the membrane in one-step, which results in fast and facile fabrication of large scale (up to 1000 cm 2 ) MEAs for application in LT fuel cells and water electrolyzers [5, 6]. As fabricated MEAs with ultra-low PGM catalysts loadings are tested at operating conditions typical for industrial PEM hydrogen production systems, and performance of 1.8 V at 3 A/cm 2 is achieved. The MEAs of interest are tested for over 1000 hrs at steady-state conditions at 3 A/cm 2 . Comprehensive post-test characterization is performed by using high-resolution TEM, STEM, EDS, SEM, ICP, XRF, XCT, and digital optical microscopy and the governing degradation mechanisms are identified and discussed in detail. The impact of the design of low-loaded MEAs for LTWEs on their performance and durability is discussed in detail and their potential to meet and surpass the DOE 2030 targets is demonstrated. Performance and Durability of Pure-Water-Fed Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers Using Baseline Materials and Operation

Abstract:Water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity produces green hydrogen and oxygen gas, which can be used for energy, fertilizer, and industrial applications and thus displace fossil fuels. Pure-water anion-exchange-membrane (AEM) electrolyzers in principle offer the advantages of commercialized proton-exchange-membrane systems (high current density, low cross over, output gas compression, etc.) while enabling the use of less-expensive steel components and nonprecious metal catalysts. AEM electrolyzer research and development, however, has been limited by the lack of broadly accessible materials that provide consistent cell performance, making it difficult to compare results across studies. Further, even when the same materials are used, different pretreatments and electrochemical analysis techniques can produce different results. Here, we report an AEM electrolyzer comprising commercially available catalysts, membrane, ionomer, and gas-diffusion layers operating near 1.9 V at 1 A cm-2 in pure water. After the initial break in, the performance degraded by 0.67 mV h-1 at 0.5 A cm-2 at 55 °C. We detail the key preparation, assembly, and operation techniques employed and show further performance improvements using advanced materials as a proof-of-concept for future AEM-electrolyzer development. The data thus provide an easily reproducible and comparatively high-performance baseline that can be used by other laboratories to calibrate the performance of improved cell components, nonprecious metal oxygen evolution, and hydrogen evolution catalysts and learn how to mitigate degradation pathways.

We further discover that dynamic Fe-based OER catalysts – that have world-record performance in traditional liquid alkaline electrolyzer systems – perform poorly with enhanced degradation rates in alkaline membrane electrolysis, illustrating fundamentally different chemical design principles for OER catalysts. Given this baseline understanding, I will end with new chemical strategies we have developed to mitigate degradation and enhance performance using novel ionomers, passivated electrolyte-catalyst interfacial architectures, and specifically designed multicomponent anode oxygen catalysts to target stable performance without supporting soluble electrolyte: 2 A cm -2 and cell voltages < 2V.
Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Systems Operating Dynamically at High Current Densities

Abstract:The fluctuating behavior of renewable energy sources hinders the widespread integration of those in a reliable electricity grid. Presumably, the wide operation range and rapid response of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers can stabilize the grid, yet the degradation effects are not fully understood. The results presented here show no negative effect of dynamic operation at current 0.8, 1.6, 2.5 and 3.3 A cm-2, on commercial membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) with two different catalyst loadings. Conversely, the reduction of the loading of precious metal in the MEA leads to a cell voltage increase by 100 mV at 3.3 A cm-2. In addition, stack temperature correction of industrial facilities is necessary for proper comparison of cell potential and analysis of degradation mechanisms.

Abstract:Water electrolyzers and fuel cells can be used to create a closed loop system for space exploration. Electrolyzers allow for reliable self-sustainable generation of hydrogen and oxygen for energy storage, followed by conversion into electrical energy in a fuel cell. A first-order safety concern for water electrolyzer operation is hydrogen crossover. Transport of hydrogen to the oxygen rich anode in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers poses safety concerns when the hydrogen concentration in the anode flow field approaches the hydrogen lower flammability limit (LFL). Hydrogen storage efficiency relies on high hydrogen pressure, leading to pressure-driven hydrogen crossover. Mitigation of hydrogen crossover through research and development of a platinum metal recombination layer has been demonstrated in high performing, durable PEMWEs. 1-4 Ouimet 4 explored the use of a novel dual recombination layer configuration to mitigate PEM water electrolyzer hydrogen crossover. In addition, the current state of the art for PEM fuel cells and water electrolyzers rely on perfluoro-sulfonated acid (PSFA) based membranes. There are significant challenges facing the use of PSFA-based membranes; namely, environmental contamination and performance limitations. The use of a hydrocarbon membrane allows for the development of a PSFA-free system that shows higher efficiency and durability. Investigation of hydrocarbon membranes pave way for developing a PEM water electrolyzer that will demonstrate improved gas permeability resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability. 5-8 There is a need for both hydrogen crossover mitigation strategies and durability testing with hydrocarbon membranes. The research outlined in this work is focused on the development of PSFA-free PEM water electrolyzers with low hydrogen crossover. In this work, the dual recombination layer configuration will be incorporated into a hydrocarbon membrane for PEM water electrolysis. Abstract:Hydrogen has gained increasing attention recently as an alternative energy carrier leading towards a sustainable hydrogen economy [1]. Green hydrogen has less pollution (water as the only byproduct) and higher energy density than its counterpart fossil fuels. Additionally, it has much higher refueling speed than lithium-ion batteries, which makes it’s more suitable for mobility applications. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is one of the most popular approaches for green hydrogen generation due to its high efficiency and high differential pressure operation capability [2]. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is the core of a PEM electrolyzer in which water molecules are spilt into hydrogen and oxygen molecules. In this overview, the challenges and paths regarding the MEA materials, operation/diagnosis/maintenance, and final recycling will be discussed. An electrolyzer MEA contains an anode and cathode made of platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts, a perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membrane, and other gasketing materials. PGM catalysts are a major source of the cost of the PEM electrolyzer stack. Ir black based catalysts have been used for decades in the PEM electrolyzer industry. Due to the high cost and scarcity of Ir, efforts have been dedicated to reducing the catalyst loading and developing highly active catalysts [3]. The membrane is another major component of a PEM electrolyzer. 5 mil and 7 mil thick membranes have been used in electrolyzer industries. However, the ionic resistive losses of these relatively thick PEMs significantly reduce the efficiency of the MEA. Hence, reducing membrane thickness has been a central topic for PEM electrolyzer membrane development. With the progressive thinning of the PEM, the hydrogen gas crossover will become significant, which will compromise the safe operation of a PEM electrolyzer system. An effective gas recombination layer in the PEM is therefore urgently needed to mitigate the resulting higher hydrogen crossover. Additionally, the mechanical stresses imposed due to operation at high differential pressure operation (up to 40 bar) increases the attractiveness of a reinforcement layer. The unique properties of the membrane and catalysts in an MEA also require ultra-pure feed water. However, this cannot always be guaranteed. Metal ions will leach out from system plumbing and the DI system can’t always effectively remove all ions from tap water. The contamination will also poison the catalysts in an MEA. It is therefore critical to establish a universal method to efficiently identify the issue and recover the MEA performance. It is expected that the MEA can last 60k to 90k hours [4]. Though functionality may be compromised at the this point, the value in the PGM catalysts, and to a lesser extent membrane, and other carbon-based materials [5] remains. MEA recycling thus needs to be considered at the very early stage of the large-scale PEM electrolyzer application. Tradition calcination approaches for catalyst refinery is not optimized for PEM MEAs due to the presence of the PFSA membrane. The burning of MEAs will not only waste costly PFSA material but also poses a threat to the environment due to carbon and fluoride emissions. Electrically Insulated Catalyst-Ionomer Anode Interfaces towards Durable Alkaline Membrane Electrolyzer

Abstract:Anion-exchange-membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is an emerging technology for scalable hydrogen production. AEMWE has poor durability when operating without supporting electrolyte due to the oxidation of ionomers and membranes in contact with anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst. We report a new “passivated” anode architecture for AEMWE where OER catalysts and ionomers are physically separated with a thin film amorphous oxide coating that is electrically insulating but conductive to hydroxide ions. We find that 2–3 nm of HfOx passivation layers show sufficient hydroxide ion transport to minimally limit the cell performance while suppressing ionomer degradation with both Ir (500 mA·cm−2 for 40 h) and CoOx (1.0 A·cm−2 for 100 h) model porous-transport-layer-supported catalysts in AEMWE. This interfacial engineering approach guides electrode design to improve the durability of AEMWE, particularly for systems operating with pure water feed.

Abstract:Hydrogen production from the proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis process provides a promising solution for renewable energy storage. As the site where the electrochemical reactions occur in the PEM electrolyzer , the structure and performance of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) significantly affect the cell efficiency and device fabrication cost. In this paper, porous transport layers (PTLs) and catalyst coating membranes (CCM) that constitute MEA are studied. The use of platinum-coated titanium felt in the anode significantly reduces the cell voltage and ohmic resistance compared with uncoated PTL, while titanium felt works better than carbon paper in the cathode. Higher catalyst loading can provide sufficient active sites for electrode reaction, and 11.1 wt% ionomers provide the best proton and gas transport channel. After optimization, the cell voltage is reduced to 1.840 V at 2 A/cm 2 , and the efficiency reaches 79%. This paper provides insights for developing efficient and economical PEM electrolyzers.

Abstract:The high cost of PEMWE originates from the usage of precious materials, insufficient efficiency and lifetime. In this work, we identified an important degradation mechanism of PEMWE caused by dynamics of ionomers over time in anode catalyst layer (ACL), which is a purely mechanical degradation of microstructure. Contrary to conventional understanding that the microstructure of ACL is static, the micropores are inclined to be occupied by ionomers due to the localized swelling/creep/migration, especially near the ACL/PTL (porous transport layer) interface, where they form transport channels of reactant/product couples. Consequently, the ACL with increased ionomers at PTL/ACL interface exhibited rapid and continuous degradation. Additionally, we discovered a close correlation between the microstructure of ACL and the catalyst ink. Specifically, if more ionomers migrate to the top layer of the ink, more ionomers accumulate at the ACL/PEM interface, leaving fewer ionomers at the ACL/PTL interface. Therefore, we successfully optimized the ionomer distribution in ACL, which exhibited reduced ionomers at the ACL/PTL interface and enriched ionomers at the ACL/PEM interface, reducing the decay rate by a factor of three when operation at 2.0 A/cm2 and 80 °C. Abstract:Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is operated in an alkaline environment and has a similar membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) structure to that of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). The use of non-noble metals as the electrocatalysts and operation at high current densities are inherently possible, so they are expected to be low-cost, high-performance candidates for next-generation water electrolysis systems. Improving the anion conductivity of the AEM and the activity of the non-precious metal catalysts is essential for the practical application of AEMWEs. 1 The non-noble electrocatalysts used in the MEA in this study were Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 and Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O, 3 which have a fused-aggregate network structure, and the electrolyte was a hydrocarbon-based AEM (QPAF-4) 4 , all of which were developed at the University of Yamanashi. The catalyst ink for the anodes was prepared by mixing the Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 O catalyst (University of Yamanashi) with solvent (water/methanol) and QPAF-4 (IEC = 2.0 meq g -1 , University of Yamanashi) binder solution. The anode ink was coated by using pulse-swirl-spray (PSS, Nordson) on the QPAF-4 membranes (IEC = 1.5 meq g -1 ) to make the catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs) with the anode. Catalyst inks for the cathodes was prepared by mixing Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O catalyst (University of Yamanashi) or Pt/CB catalyst (TEC10E50E, Tanaka Kikinzoku) with solvent (water/methanol) and QPAF-4 (IEC = 2.0 meq g -1 ) binder solution. The cathode ink was coated by using PSS on the gas diffusion layer (GDL, TGP-H-120, Toray) to make the gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for the cathodes. Ni mesh (Bekaert.co.jp) was used for the anode GDLs. The single cell (Figure 1, cell structure developed by Yokohama National University) performances were measured while supplying 1 M KOH at 80 °C to both electrodes. Figure 2 (a) shows the I-V performance of cells using Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 O for the anode and Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O or Pt/CB for the cathode. The electrolysis voltage observed for the cell with non-noble metal catalysts on both electrodes was higher than that for the cell with Pt/C on the cathode but was below 2 V at a current density of 1.2 A cm -2 . The value of the onset electrolysis voltage was nearly the same as that of the corresponding rotating disk electrode, 3 suggesting that the intrinsic performance of the cathode catalyst is being realized in the MEA. Increasing the amount of the cathodic catalyst loading scarcely affected the polarization. It is supposed that the fused-aggregate network structure of the Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O catalyst contributes to the favorable mass transfer. Figure 2 (b) shows the time dependence of the cell voltage of these cells. The increased loading amount improved the durability of the cathode. It is considered that the increase in the thickness of the cathode catalyst layer alleviated the damage of the GDL fibers to the membrane. These results indicate the possibility of adopting non-precious metal catalysts for both electrodes in AEMWE and thereby significantly reducing the catalyst cost. Abstract:Lowering the iridium loading at the anode of proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers is crucial for the envisaged GW-scale deployment of PEM water electrolysis. Here, the durability of a novel iridium catalyst with a low iridium packing density, allowing for low iridium loadings without decreasing the electrode thickness, is being investigated in a 10-cell PEM water electrolyzer short stack. The anodes of the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) of the first five cells utilize a conventional iridium catalyst, at loadings that serve as benchmark for today's industry standard (2 mg Ir /cm 2 ). The last five cells utilize the novel catalyst at 8-fold lower loadings (0.25 mg Ir /cm 2 ). The MEAs are based on Nafion ® 117 and are tested for 3700 h by load cycling between 0.2 and 2.0 A/cm 2 , with weekly polarization curves and impedance diagnostics. For both catalysts, the performance degradation at low current densities is dominated by an increase of the overpotential for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), whereby the OER mass activity of the novel catalyst remains ≈4-fold higher after 3700 h. The temporal evolution of the OER mass activities of the two catalysts will be analyzed in order to assess the suitability of the novel catalyst for industrial application.

Abstract:Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) has been widely considered as the most promising power sources for electric vehicles due to their ultimate cleanness, high efficiency and fast refueling. Recently, the increased scalability of power and energy in fuel cells has made the PEMFC an ideal power plant for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), i.e., electric long-haul trucks and coaches, with different drive cycles and operating conditions, which requires more durable catalyst and membrane compared with light duty vehicles (LDVs). Unfortunately, the degradation mechanism of the catalyst and membrane in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) of PEMFCs during long-period operation under the HDV condition is still not clearly understood. In this work, MEAs were made of our highly active catalysts, 30wt% Pt/KB, as the cathode and a commercial Pt/C catalyst as the anode. The MEAs were tested at different relative humilities under the HDV conditions with catalyst loading of 0.2 mgPt/cm2, back pressure of 250 kPa, under the standard protocol of accelerated stress test (AST) for 180k cycles, which is equivalent to 30,000 h. The results show that the MEA exhibit very high performance at beginning of life (BOL) with a current density of 1.6 A/cm2 at the cell voltage of 0.7 V, high mass activity of 384 mA·mgPt and large electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) of 86 m2·gPt at 50%RH. Under the same testing condition, the MEA still maintained the current density of 1.4 A/cm2, 1.2 A/cm2 and 1.0 A/cm2 and 0.9 A/cm2 at the cell voltage of 0.7 V after the AST of 30k, 60k, 90k and 120k cycles. Moreover, the performance of the MEA significantly decreased to 0.5 A/cm2 and 0.3 A/cm2 at the voltage of 0.7 V after the AST of 150k and 180k cycles. In comparison, the mass activity of the MEA first significantly dropped to 183 mA·mgPt after the AST of 30k cycles and maintains uniform decreasing from 60k cycles to 180 cycles, the similar phenomenon was observed in the degradation of ECSA. The H2 crossover and AC impendence spectra of the MEA was measured at different cell voltage during the AST process, in order to study the kinetic and mass transport loss during the degradation. Furthermore, the Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was performed on the produced water of the MEA to monitor the degradation of Pt nanoparticles, carbon support, ionomer, and membrane. Besides, the Pt migrations, the pore structure and volume change in the carbon support before and after the AST of 180k cycles were studied using HR-TEM and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). During the whole AST testing cycles, the MEA exhibited higher performance at relatively low humidity level, which is associated with the insufficient hydrophilicity of the carbon support and is more favorable for the PEMFCs working in low-humidity condition. In summary, this work presents the degradation behavior and mechanism for highly efficient and durable PGM-catalyst MEA under HDV conditions.

Abstract:Hydrogen production through water electrolysis is a crucial technology to enable the transition to a carbon neutral, hydrogen-based economy. One of the primary types of electrolyzers is the low-temperature proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). As with the analogous proton-exchange membrane fuel cells, platinum group metal electrocatalysts are utilized due to their activity and stability in acidic environment. Electrocatalysis R&D efforts for PEMWEs primarily focus on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) since it is several orders of magnitude kinetically slower than the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). 1 Iridium-based metal oxides (IrO x ) are regarded as the best PEM electrolyzer electrocatalysts as they balance activity and stability. 2 However, improvements are needed in both areas to enable minimization of Ir loading to meet system cost targets while also meeting challenging performance and lifetime targets. 3 An understanding of the factors affecting both the activity and stability of Ir-based OER catalysts is needed to develop strategies to enable both high OER activity and long-term stability of the PEMWE anode catalyst. This presentation will describe our studies of the effects of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) binder on the OER kinetics and the factors influencing the stability of two commercial Ir-based OER catalysts, one comprised of IrO x only and the other also containing TiO x . Measurements of OER kinetics as a function of ionomer to catalyst ratio utilizing rotating disc electrode and cavity microelectrode methods in an acidic aqueous electrochemical environment will be described. Dissolution and loss of Ir under the operating conditions of the PEMWE anode is considered to be one of the main PEMWE anode degradation mechanisms. 4 To understand the factors affecting this phenomenon, the potential and time-dependence of Ir (and Ti) were determined using an electrochemical flow cell system connected to an inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) capable of detecting trace concentrations (<ppb) of dissolved elements in solution. The electrochemical data combined with the ICP-MS data have been used to evaluate the influence of various factors such as potential, potentiodynamic profile parameters (e.g., scan rate, upper and lower potential limits) on the dissolution processes in acidic aqueous electrolyte at room temperature. Abstract:Anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is a promising low-temperature technology for hydrogen production. It leverages the advantages of the currently dominant technologies (alkaline water electrolysis and proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis) by using transition metal group based catalysts and a zero-gap configuration, enabling high efficiency. However, current AEMWE systems show a limited stability and efficiency. In this work, commercial and non-commercial polymers are used to fabricate catalyst-coated membranes with a production method oriented towards scalable production (1). A tailored poly(arylene piperidinium) polymer (PAP) shows enhanced stability compared to commercial Aemion+ TM during 100 h operation at 1 A/cm 2 and 60 °C in 1 M KOH electrolyte (Figure 1) (2). Additionally, different anode catalysts are employed and measured in a reference electrode setup to separate the cell voltage into contributions from the anode and cathode (3). Here, the overpotential of Ni(OH) 2 is higher compared to the more active NiFe-layered-double-hydroxide(LDH) and iridium oxide. Employing this setup to measure individual degradation of cathode and anode is part of ongoing research.
