Abstract:Abstract This project aimed to develop a low-cost, 4-stroke gasoline-powered opposed piston engine (OPE), joining two conventional internal combustion engines with side valves on the block and removing the heads. This modified engine has a combustion chamber confined to the space inside the cylinder between the piston heads and the chamber between the valves. The pistons move on the cylinder shaft in opposite directions, a typical feature of OPE. It was studied the feasibility of building an engine from a different one already in use, to reduce the manufacturing and development costs. In addition, higher power can be obtained with better specific fuel consumption and reduced vibration. The engine performance was compared between the stock and opposed-piston engines. The engine performance parameters, such as rotational speed, torque and fuel consumption, were measured on an eddy currents dynamometer. With the collected data, power, specific consumption and overall efficiency were calculated. The performance of both stock and opposed-piston engines were compared, allowing to conclude that the opposed-piston engine is a cost-effective solution, delivers more power and has reduced vibration.

Abstract:Abstract The purpose of this project was to develop a low-cost OP engine, 4-stroke, gasoline by joining two single-cylinder reciprocating internal combustion engines with side valves on the block, removing the heads. The chosed engine was Model EY15 of Robin America. Joining these two engine blocks together made possible to build an opposed-piston engine (OPE) with two crankshafts. In this new engine, the combustion chamber is confined to the space inside the cylinder between the piston heads and the chamber between the valves. The pistons move in the cylinder axis in opposite directions, a feature typical of opposed-piston engines. After building the engine, parameters characteristic of the OPE, such as: rotational speed, torque, fuel consumption and emissions, were measured on an Eddy currents dynamometer. With the collected data, power, specific consumption and overall efficiency were calculated, allowing to conclude that the motor with the opposed-piston configuration is less expensive and is more powerful. The development of the opposed-piston engine in this project has shown that it is feasible to build one engine from a different one already in use, reducing the manufacturing and development costs. In addition, higher power can be obtained with better specific fuel consumption and less vibration.

Abstract:This paper reports the study of a conceptual gasoline Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) using scroll type rotary device rather than conventional piston as the main engine component. The proposed innovate engine adopts Humphrey Cycle to maximize the power performance of ICE. A performance comparison of the Humphrey Cycle, Otto cycle and Brayton cycle has firstly been conducted and studied. The effects of using different designed compression ratio under variable expansion ratio have been investigated, which identify the optimal operational conditions under different compression/expansion ratio of the engine. A case study has been conducted to study the performance of small scale scroll-type rotary ICE. Results pointed out under designed compression ratio from 2:1 to 10:,1 the effective energy efficiency of the scroll-type rotary ICE ranges from 0.41 to 0.55 and the effective power from the system ranges from 2.88 to 15.82 kW.

Abstract:With mounting pressure on Indian manufacturers to meet future fuel economy and emissions mandates-including the recently passed Corporate Average Fuel Consumption (CAFC) standards for light-duty vehicles-many are evaluating new technologies. However, to provide an economically sustainable solution, these technologies must increase efficiency without increasing cost. One promising solution to meet both current, and future, standards is the opposed-piston engine. Widely used in the early 20th century for on-road applications, use of the opposed-piston engine waseventually discontinued due to challenges with emissions and oil control. But advancements in computer-aided engineering tools, combined with state-of-the-art engineering practices, has enabled Achates Power to develop a modern opposed-piston diesel engine architecture that is clean, significantly more fuel efficient and less expensive to manufacture than today's four-stroke engines. In addition to a short explanation of the opposed-piston engine and its inherent efficiency benefits, this technical paper will provide detailed performance and emissions results of a multi-cylinder Achates Power opposed-piston engine configured to meet commercial truck requirements. Development and Experimental Investigation of a Two-Stroke Opposed-Piston Free-Piston Engine

Abstract:The proposed paper deals with the development process and initial measurement results of an opposed-piston combustion engine for application in a Free-Piston Linear Generator (FPLG). The FPLG, which is being developed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is an innovative internal combustion engine for a fuel based electrical power supply. With its arrangement, the pistons freely oscillate between the compression chamber of the combustion unit and a gas spring with no mechanical coupling like a crank shaft. Linear alternators convert the kinetic energy of the moving pistons into electric energy. The virtual development of the novel combustion system is divided into two stages: On the one hand, the combustion system including e.g. a cylinder liner, pistons, cooling and lubrication concepts has to be developed. On the other hand, 3D-CFD-simulations are used in the early stage within the virtual development process toward the optimization of the geometry of the scavenging ports and ducts, the gas exchange, injection and ignition. With the high variability of the free piston concept, a strategy for a dual combustion mode operation with spark ignition and homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is developed. The new engine is constructed on and implemented at a hydraulic free-piston test bench at DLR which controls the piston movements by two hydraulic actuators. In this stage, the power is not converted by linear generators yet. First measurement results show the engine behavior with dual spark ignition and two opposed injectors.

Abstract:Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) is an approach to achieving diesel-like efficiencies but with potentially lower cost and fewer emissions. Traditional challenges with GCI arise at low-load conditions due to low charge temperatures causing combustion instability and at high-load conditions due to peak cylinder pressure and noise limitations. The fundamental architecture of the two-stroke Opposed-Piston Engine (OP Engine) enables GCI by decoupling piston motion from cylinder scavenging, allowing for flexible and independent control of cylinder residual fraction and temperature leading to improved low-load combustion. In addition, the high peak cylinder pressure and noise challenges at high-load operation are mitigated by the lower BMEP operation and faster heat release for the same pressure rise rate of the OP engine. These advantages further solidify the performance benefits of the OP engine and demonstrate the near-term technical feasibility of advanced combustion technologies, enabled by the opposed-piston architecture. This chapter describes the architectural advantages of the OP engine for GCI and presents testing results of a 2.7L OP GCI multi-cylinder engine. A part of the recipe for successful GCI operation calls for high compression ratio, leading to higher combustion stability at low-loads, higher efficiencies, and lower cycle HC + NOx emissions. In addition, results on catalyst light-off mode with GCI are also presented. The OP engine’s architectural advantages enable faster and earlier catalyst light-off while producing low emissions, which further improves cycle emissions and fuel consumption over conventional engines.

Positive displacement engines differ from turbine engines in that their work is generally obtained by the products of combustion expanding against a sealed piston. The aircraft engine has stringent operating requirements, and these are outlined. From 1900–1950 the primary types of positive displacement engines were: in‐line, rotary radial, static radial, vee engines, opposed cylinder engines, and diesel engines. Abstract:As a new type of internal combustion engine, opposed rotary piston (ORP) engine has the advantages of simple structure and high working frequency, and can achieve high power density. Consequently, it stands as an ideal power source for hybrid power systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. The ORP engine has different power output modes, corresponding to different piston rotation and volume evolutions of combustion chamber. However, the effect of power output modes on kinetics characteristics and in-cylinder combustion of ORP engines are still uncovered. In this paper, the kinematic model of an ORP engine is established for scenarios involving power output by different shafts (Shaft 1 and Shaft 3). Meanwhile, the piston rotation patterns and cylinder volume variations are investigated correspondingly. Further, three-dimensional numerical model of the ORP engine is established, enabling analysis of in-cylinder combustion characteristics, engine performance, as well as nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emissions. The results indicate that the volume variations of all cylinders follow a consistent pattern under the power output by Shaft 3. A pair of opposed cylinders features longer durations of intake and expansion strokes, and shorter durations of compression and exhaust strokes, the other pair of combustion chambers is the opposite under the power output by Shaft 1. The engine demonstrates a charging efficiency of 95.36 %, with corresponding indicated thermal efficiency and indicated power output of 38.08 % and 40.9 kW, respectively. The two adjacent cylinders present significantly different operation processes in the case of the power output by Shaft 1, achieving charging efficiencies of 94.29 % and 89.11 %, respectively, with the indicated thermal efficiency of 34.49 % and 31.60 %. The corresponding minimum indicated specific fuel consumption under the two power output modes are 211.7 g/kW∙h and 243.7 g/kW∙h, respectively, accompanied by NO x emission factors of 25.3 g/kW∙h and 17.6 g/kW∙h. With the given range of ignition timing, a trade-off relationship exists between the engine performance and NO x emissions. The power density of the case of power output by Shaft 3 is superior to that of Shaft 1.

Abstract:Opposed piston two-stroke engine, due to its characteristics of fast expansion, high power density and indicate efficiency, and dynamic balancing, attracts many researchers’ attention. In order to explore its combustion performance, a novel test platform consisting of a drive system and combustion control system is proposed in this paper. The drive system mainly contains a 75-kW induction motor, a synchronous gearbox, and two crankshaft mechanisms. The displacement of the piston and chamber pressure is acquired and used to control combustion parameters. Using this mechanical device, the rotary motion can be converted to the opposite movement of the two pistons precisely. All the designed functions of the platform are verified by the combustion experiments of an opposed-piston two-stroke prototype. Furthermore, the experimental data is used to verify a one-dimension simulation model to evaluate the combustion characteristics of the prototype.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part M: Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment, Ahead of Print. Separating the scavenging process from the lubrication methodology in conventional two-stroke engines is an effective method of reducing emissions. Segregation of scavenging by use of stepped pistons is one such method providing significant improvements in engine durability, and reduced lubricant consumption, together with reduced production cost. The study discusses the approaches used together with those applied to conventional engines. This paper focusses on a marine outboard motor application and cross-comparisons with a comparable four-stroke outboard motor are drawn within the study. One-dimensional computational fluid dynamics models of the engine types have allowed performance and emissions simulations. Where possible, data from experimental dynamometer testing is compared with the theoretical models. A reasonable level of correlation in terms of performance has been observed. Two-stroke cycle engines are able to demonstrate reduced oxides of nitrogen emissions when compared with conventional four-stroke engines. Models of the stepped piston engine have confirmed the lower NOx emission evident with operation on the two-stroke cycle.

Abstract:A new type of hydraulic free piston engine was proposed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional internal combustion hydraulic free piston engine which needs to control the compression ratio exactly.The new type engine uses the decomposed hot gases released by the monopropellant to drive the piston assembly to and fro and output hydraulic energy.The influences of the bed load,area ratio,porous and resistance of the catalyst bed on the monopropellant decomposition were studied,and the life of the catalyst bed under the pulse working style was analyzed using Fluent.The operation frequency of the piston and the power output were improved by inserting an exhaust solenoid valves to the dynamic cylinder.The adiabatic ceramic and the suitable design of exhaust ports can reduce the heat loss through the dynamic cylinders.Both the soft seal and hard seal were introduced to reduce the gas in the dynamic cylinder flow into the hydraulic pump and made the system work reliably.

Abstract:Bipropellant-powered hydraulic free piston engine (BHFPE), as a new type of HFPE, takes advantage of bipropellant in place of conventional fossil fuel, and adopts a catalytic ignition instead of the conventional spark or compression ignition. In this paper, the operational principle and working process of a BHFPE are described firstly, then the chemical formula and molar mass as well as the heating value of the bipropellant i.e. kerosene/HIP combination are dealt with respectively. Thereafter analysis on the internal energy-flow i.e. energy input, transfer, dissipation and output, during a working cycle of the BHFPE are analyzed. Additionally the operating parameters such as working efficiency, maximum speed of the free piston assembly (FPA) and the output hydraulic energy are derived.

Abstract:Securing the objectives for future high-efficiency low-carbon-dioxide vehicles is a key target for automotive manufacturers. This paper considers a high-durability two-stroke cycle engine in terms of performance and computational modelling of the emissions characteristics for automotive range-extender or hybrid electric vehicle power plant application. The engine uses novel segregated pump charging via the application of stepped pistons, and a comparison of the engine characteristics is made with those of a comparable four-stroke cycle engine of similar expected power output (more than 60 kW/l). In the interests of cost minimisation, both engines are limited to parallel two-cylinder in-line configurations with the intention of still being able to achieve acceptably low noise, vibration and harshness characteristics. In order to achieve low engine exhaust emissions, computational modelling of direct injection is considered for the stepped-piston engine. A significant reduction in the nitrogen oxide emissions of between 31% and 55% is observed.

Abstract:The government of India has decided to implement Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emissions standards from April 2020. This requires OEMs to equip their diesel engines with costly after-treatment, EGR systems and higher rail pressure fuel systems. By one estimate, BS-VI engines are expected to be 15 to 20% more expensive than BS-IV engines, while also suffering with 2 to 3 % lower fuel economy. OEMs are looking for solutions to meet the BS-VI emissions standards while still keeping the upfront and operating costs low enough for their products to attract customers; however traditional engine technologies seem to have exhausted the possibilities. Fuel economy improvement technologies applied to traditional 4-stroke engines bring small benefits with large cost penalties. One promising solution to meet both current, and future, emissions standards with much improved fuel economy at lower cost is the Opposed Piston (OP) engine. Recently, there has been surge in developing highly efficient OP engine architecture to modernize it using today’s analytical tools, high pressure fuel system and manufacturing technologies to meet emissions, while reaping the fuel economy advantage. As the company pioneering the OP engine technology, Achates Power Inc. (API) has been publishing technical papers in recent years, including a paper describing inherent efficiency benefits of OP engines, multi-cylinder steady state and transient results for medium duty truck and light duty applications. This technical paper provides detailed performance and emissions results measured on API’s 4.9L multi-cylinder OP 2-stroke diesel engine configured specifically to meet BS-VI emissions standards for commercial truck application. Evaluation of the Effect of Variable Compression Ratios Performance on Opposed Piston 2-Stroke Engine

Abstract:Numerous skills involving the introduction of (OP) opposed piston engine have been developed in the recent past. Indeed, novel techniques can help to improve the performance of the engine. The aim of this paper is to model and simulate a simple single-cylinder two-stroke opposed-piston engine and minimise fuel consumption and heat loss, using the software programme AVL BOOST™. AVL BOOST is an engine modelling software, which analyses the performance of a modelled single cylinder two-stroke opposed-piston engine by changing desired parameters. In order to meet this aim, experimental results from a unique engine are used to make a comparison with the results obtained from AVL BOOST model. Six combinations of compression ratios (12, 13.5, 15, 16.5, 18 and 19.5) are analysed in this study with the engine speed running at 420 rpm and 1500 rpm. In addition to the compression ratios, the effect of stroke-to-bore (S/B) ratios on OP2S performance is investigated. Various values of S/B ratios, whilst maintaining a constant swept volume, port geometry and combustion timing, and their effect on fuel consumption and heat loss are analysed in this study. A comparison between the two engine speeds with increasing combinations of compression ratios, and the S/B ratios revealed minimal differences in peak pressure, peak temperature, IMEP, ISFC, indicated efficiency and total heat loss. Detailed analyses of these parameters are highlighted in discrete sections of this paper.

Abstract:A significant challenge in utilizing hydrogen in conventional internal combustion engines is achieving a balance between NOx emissions and brake power output. A lean premixed charge (Lambda ≈ 2.5) allows for efficient and stable combustion with minimal NOx emissions. However, this comes at the cost of reduced power density due to the higher air requirements of the thermodynamic process. While supercharging can mitigate this drawback, it introduces increased complexity, cost, and size. An intriguing alternative is the 2-stroke cycle, particularly in an opposed piston (OP) configuration. This study presents the virtual development of a single-cylinder 2-stroke OP engine with a total displacement of 0.95 L, designed to deliver 25 kW at 3000 rpm. Thanks to its compact size, high thermal efficiency, robustness, modularity, and low manufacturing cost, this engine is intended for use either as an industrial power unit or in combination with electric motors in hybrid vehicles. The overarching goal of this project is to demonstrate that internal combustion engines can offer a practical and cost-effective alternative to hydrogen fuel cells without significant penalties in terms of efficiency and pollutant emissions. The design of this novel engine started from scratch, and both 1D and 3D CFD simulations were employed, with particular focus on optimizing the cylinder's geometry and developing an efficient low-pressure injection system. The numerical methodology was based on state-of-the-art commercial codes, in line with established engineering practices. The numerical results indicated that the optimized engine configuration slightly surpasses the target performance, achieving 29 kW at 3000 rpm, while maintaining near-zero NOx emissions (<20 ppm) and high brake thermal efficiency (~40%) over a wide power range. Additionally, the cost of this engine is projected to be lower than an equivalent 4-stroke engine, due to fewer components (e.g., no cylinder head, poppet valves, or camshafts) and a lighter construction.

Abstract:A hydraulic free piston engine (HFPE) integrated a prime mover and a hydraulic pump-into one compact unit, which realized non-stiffness power transmission utilizing hydraulic pressure energy. Based on the analysis of the developing internal combustion(I.C.) type and monopropellant-powered type hydraulic free piston engine(HFPE), a new type HFPE i.e. bipropellant-powered type HFPE was presented. The working principle, the structure features, the energy-releasing way, the unit power and the advantages of BHFPE (bipropellant-powered type HFPE) were discussed and condensed by comparing with the ICHFPE and MHFPE. The key problems to develop a BHFPE were summarized. It can be concluded that the BHFPE is promising and worthy of research deeply as a new type HFPE.

Abstract:The hydraulic free-piston engine (HFPE) is a kind of hybrid-powered machine which combines the reciprocating piston-type internal combustion engine and the plunger pump as a whole. In recent years, the HFPE has been investigated by a number of research groups worldwide due to its potential advantages of high efficiency, energy savings, reduced emissions and multi-fuel operation. Therefore, our study aimed to assess the operating characteristics, core questions and research progress of HFPEs via a systematic review and meta-analysis. We included operational control, starting characteristics, misfire characteristics, in-cylinder working processes and operating stability. We conducted the literature search using electronic databases. The research on HFPEs has mainly concentrated on four kinds of free-piston engine, according to piston arrangement form: single piston, dual pistons, opposed pistons and four-cylinder complex configuration. HFPE research in China is mainly conducted in Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, Jilin University and the Beijing Institute of Technology. In addition, in China, research has mainly focused on the in-cylinder combustion process while a piston is free by considering in-cylinder combustion machinery and piston dynamics. Regarding future research, it is very important that we solve the instabilities brought about by chance fluctuations in the combustion process, which will involve the hydraulic system’s efficiency, the cyclical variation, the method of predicting instability and the recovery after instability.
