Abstract:A hydraulic free piston engine (HFPE) integrates one hydraulic pump and diesel engine into one compact assembly. As a compound engine used for nonstiff-transmission of power, its internal energy conversion and external energy recuperation process were analyzed. The great advantages such as high fuel-economy, low energy-conversion loss, flexible power combination, multi-substitute fuel and energy recapture were described. Last but not the least, HFPE makes multi-load control easy through serving as power central station and using hydraulic transformer as interface between hydraulic motors and common pressure rail. HFPE has a promising potential in mobile machinery that starts and stops frequently.

Abstract:A hydrostatic transmission is a promising technology in renewable energy harvesting, such as wind energy and wave energy, where the hydrostatic-driven electric generator is a key energy conversion component. By using analytical and experimental methods, this paper investigates the performance of a novel hydrostatic-driven electric generator which integrates the functions of an axial piston hydrostatic motor and a permanent magnet electric generator together. The experimental platform consists of a prototype, an adjustable hydrostatic power source, a controllable electrical load, and various sensors. Energy conversions between hydrostatic and electrical forms are evaluated under different operating velocities and control signals. Power loss distributions are presented by combining measured data and analytical calculation. Thermal experiments are implemented under both of natural and oil-forced cooling conditions and it is found that the temperature rise is much lower when the machine is cooled by hydraulic oil. The experiments validate the energy conversion efficiency, steady controllability, and cooling capability of the integrated hydrostatic-driven electric generator. The results can provide references for further efficiency optimization, dynamic control, as well as practical application.

Abstract:A new design scheme of hydraulic pumping unit was brought forward to meet the requirements of long-stroke and low-frequency in the process of oil extraction.By adopting the new compound cylinder and combining the technology of electro-hydraulic proportional control and hydraulic counterweight,the unit appears to be more compact and applicative,meets the demands of long-stroke,low-frequency and large-load,and makes stroke and frequency fully-variable.

Abstract:To study the starting performance of hydraulic free piston engine(HFPE),the typical starting phases of HFPE were investigated through experiments.According to different starting energy sources and excitement modes in HFPE,4 starting modes of constant pressure valve control,constant pressure position control,starting hydraulic accumulator(SHA) valve control and SHA position control were given.With the change in supply-oil pressure,4 starting performance parameter curves including displacement of the piston assembly,the pressure difference in scavenging chambers,the pressure difference in combustion chambers and the one in the hydraulic chambers of the pump were tested in constant pressure starting mode.The relationship of the 4 parameters above-mentioned and initial accumulated pressure were analyzed in the SHA starting mode.The differences among 4 starting modes on excitement method and energy supplement were discussed.Results show that the position-control mode has better starting performance than valve-control mode,and is suitable for a higher power occasion.Valve-control mode is applicable to a case with lower starting-frequency.

Abstract:The hydraulic free-piston engine (HFPE) is a kind of hybrid-powered machine which combines the reciprocating piston-type internal combustion engine and the plunger pump as a whole. In recent years, the HFPE has been investigated by a number of research groups worldwide due to its potential advantages of high efficiency, energy savings, reduced emissions and multi-fuel operation. Therefore, our study aimed to assess the operating characteristics, core questions and research progress of HFPEs via a systematic review and meta-analysis. We included operational control, starting characteristics, misfire characteristics, in-cylinder working processes and operating stability. We conducted the literature search using electronic databases. The research on HFPEs has mainly concentrated on four kinds of free-piston engine, according to piston arrangement form: single piston, dual pistons, opposed pistons and four-cylinder complex configuration. HFPE research in China is mainly conducted in Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, Jilin University and the Beijing Institute of Technology. In addition, in China, research has mainly focused on the in-cylinder combustion process while a piston is free by considering in-cylinder combustion machinery and piston dynamics. Regarding future research, it is very important that we solve the instabilities brought about by chance fluctuations in the combustion process, which will involve the hydraulic system’s efficiency, the cyclical variation, the method of predicting instability and the recovery after instability.

Key Technologies on Monopropellant-Powered Hydraulic Free Piston Engine

Abstract:A new type of hydraulic free piston engine was proposed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional internal combustion hydraulic free piston engine which needs to control the compression ratio exactly.The new type engine uses the decomposed hot gases released by the monopropellant to drive the piston assembly to and fro and output hydraulic energy.The influences of the bed load,area ratio,porous and resistance of the catalyst bed on the monopropellant decomposition were studied,and the life of the catalyst bed under the pulse working style was analyzed using Fluent.The operation frequency of the piston and the power output were improved by inserting an exhaust solenoid valves to the dynamic cylinder.The adiabatic ceramic and the suitable design of exhaust ports can reduce the heat loss through the dynamic cylinders.Both the soft seal and hard seal were introduced to reduce the gas in the dynamic cylinder flow into the hydraulic pump and made the system work reliably.

Abstract:The deep-sea environment has the characteristics of high pressure and low temperature. In addition to the extremely high requirements on the structural reliability, the ultra-high ambient pressure also has a great impact on the working characteristics of the hydraulic source. In this paper, the efficiency characteristics of a deep-sea hydraulic source are studied in the full-ocean-depth pressure range. According to the power transfer process, the efficiency of the deep-sea motor, gear pump and hydraulic circuit is analyzed. In so doing, the oil friction loss of the motor rotor, the internal leakage of the gear pump, the viscous friction loss of the hydraulic system, etc., are calculated. Then, simulating the deep-sea high-pressure environment by the pressure cylinder, the output characteristics and corresponding input power of the prototype are measured. By analyzing the experimental data, the efficiency characteristic curve of the hydraulic source prototype, changing with the ambient pressure, is obtained. The experimental and calculation results show that, with the increase of ambient pressure, the system efficiency of the hydraulic source prototype increases first and then decreases.

Abstract:Electro-hydraulic power units are key components of hybrid driven mobile machines such as forklifts and excavators. To satisfy the requirement of limited installation space, this paper proposes a compact and reversible electro-hydraulic energy conversion unit which is the integration of an axial piston hydraulic pump/motor and an electrical machine excited by a segmented Halbach permanent magnet array. The magnets are fixed on the surface of a barrel so that the hydraulic rotor and the electrical rotor are integrated together. Analytical and numerical methods are used to investigate the coupling issues including the common rotor's effect on flux density distribution, combined torque ripple, flow and energy losses in the oil gap, and some design criteria are presented to provide further development with references.

Abstract:The demand of hydraulic parallel motion system of space rendezvous and docking simulator to its hydraulic system is high flow and high performance. To achieve good motion simulation results and meet the requirements of precision control, a method of self-tuning parameters fuzzy PID control of proportional water valve opening has been employed to control oil temperature, a method of online vacuum degassing in a sealed system has been used to increase oil effective bulk modulus, and a device has been developed to measure oil bulk modulus online. Experimental research has been carried out on the hydraulic driving system of comprehensive test bed for docking mechanism. The experimental results show that precise control of oil temperature has been achieved and bulk modulus of oil has been increased obviously.

Abstract:Bipropellant-powered hydraulic free piston engine (BHFPE), as a new type of HFPE, takes advantage of bipropellant in place of conventional fossil fuel, and adopts a catalytic ignition instead of the conventional spark or compression ignition. In this paper, the operational principle and working process of a BHFPE are described firstly, then the chemical formula and molar mass as well as the heating value of the bipropellant i.e. kerosene/HIP combination are dealt with respectively. Thereafter analysis on the internal energy-flow i.e. energy input, transfer, dissipation and output, during a working cycle of the BHFPE are analyzed. Additionally the operating parameters such as working efficiency, maximum speed of the free piston assembly (FPA) and the output hydraulic energy are derived.

Abstract:The disadvantages of traditional hydraulic circuits regulating speed with a throttle or variable displacement are first analyzed;then. the advantages and development background of variable frequency hydraulic technology are introduced. This article pointed out that the variable frequency hydraulic system is an overall energy-saving system which can realize power match from the main power supply to execution mechanism. Development and application as well as the research situation of variable frequency hydraulic technology are described in detail. The problems in variable frequency hydraulic technology are discussed, which mainly involve low velocity stability, response time, startup or direction changing smoothness, velocity tracking precision and efficiency. Some kinds of solutions for these problems are presented. In the last part of the article, the developing prospect of variable frequency hydraulic technology is given.

Abstract:A hydraulic free piston engine (HFPE) integrated a prime mover and a hydraulic pump-into one compact unit, which realized non-stiffness power transmission utilizing hydraulic pressure energy. Based on the analysis of the developing internal combustion(I.C.) type and monopropellant-powered type hydraulic free piston engine(HFPE), a new type HFPE i.e. bipropellant-powered type HFPE was presented. The working principle, the structure features, the energy-releasing way, the unit power and the advantages of BHFPE (bipropellant-powered type HFPE) were discussed and condensed by comparing with the ICHFPE and MHFPE. The key problems to develop a BHFPE were summarized. It can be concluded that the BHFPE is promising and worthy of research deeply as a new type HFPE.

Abstract:The hydraulic load-sensing system is a more efficient system solution than constant pressure system in mobile machine. However, the overall system efficiency for multiple actuators is still low since this centralized hydraulic control system only adapts to the highest load pressure. Therefore in this paper, a distributed hydraulic control system where each function is powered by a hydraulic free piston engine is proposed. Compared with centralized solution, it is more efficient since the power of hydraulic free piston engine is tailored to each function. By integrating small inertia linear engine and pump piston in one unit, the hydraulic free piston engine is an efficient and fast response hydraulic power source. Since the hydraulic free piston engine is essentially a digital hydraulic power source, a digital load-sensing control is proposed in this study. The system architecture, modeling, controller design and performance of the digital hydraulic load-sensing control system are presented. A test bench is developed to verify the system feasibility and performance.

Abstract:The hydraulic transformer, a new hydraulic transmission and control component, has much advantage in principle, but there are still some technologies to be resolved firstly before it becomes an applied one. The energy saving concept and working principle of the hydraulic transformer were given, the six different kidney positions of the port plate were discussed and the optimal one was chosen. Then working relationship between the kidneys of the port plate and the end cap were analyzed, an innovative working relationship was brought out, and that improved the efficiency and broadened the applicability of the apparatus. Finally the math models of the hydraulic transformer were established, and the simulation of flow and pressure transformation ratio were carried out.
Modeling And Experimental Study Of A Novel Power Split Hydraulic Transmission

Abstract:The characteristics of a novel power split hydraulic transmission are studied in this paper. The new hydraulic transmission is built from a balanced vane pump with a floating ring. By coupling the floating ring to the output shaft, it becomes a hydraulic transmission, converting the mechanical power on the input shaft into the hydraulic power at the outlet and the mechanical power on the output shaft. By controlling the pressure at the outlet (control pressure), the power ratio transferred through mechanical and hydraulic path can be adjusted. One important feature of the new transmission is that the internal friction torque of the transmission, e.g., friction torque between vane tips and floating ring, helps to drive the output shaft whereas is wasted and turned into heat in a conventional vane pump. This increases the transfer efficiency from input shaft to output shaft. In this study, the characteristics of the input shaft torque, output shaft torque and the outlet flow rate are investigated through experimental studies. Results show that the shaft torques and the outlet flow rate are functions of control pressure and differential shaft speed. The mathematical models have been developed from the analytical and experimental results. The study provides a comprehensive understanding of the new transmission.

Abstract:Energy extraction and conversion from ocean waves are being increasingly regarded as a research hotspot. Many different wave energy conversion systems have been proposed to convert wave energy into electricity. The paper reviewed and analyzed the hydraulic transmission technologies used in various kinds of wave energy conversion systems, and introduced a water/oil integrated transmission system used in wave energy converter to reduce the pollution caused by hydraulic oil leakage. This paper also proposed a digital hydraulic cylinder group, which could regulate the pressure of hydraulic power take-off system and reduce the energy interference in multiple devices deployed in arrays. The wave power generation applications will develop rapidly due to the fading fossil energy resources and serious environmental pollution, while the hydraulic transmission technologies with water/oil integrated transmission and digital hydraulic cylinder group will be of crucial importance to the process of the development.

Abstract:The engine cooling fan drive is crucial for an engine as it ensures safe and efficient engine operation. In heavy-duty mobile machine, the engine cooling fan consumes a considerable amount of engine power. To meet high cooling demand a hydraulic fan drive is usually employed. A simple and cost-effective way is to use two fixed displacement hydrostatic units and a pressure relief valve where it has severe valve throttling losses. A more efficient way is to use a variable displacement pump to drive a fixed displacement motor. It eliminates valve throttling however the drive efficiency is still relatively low due to variable pump displacement control. Therefore, an engine cooling fan drive system with a power split hydraulic transmission was proposed in the previous study. The hydraulic transmission is a compact unit with both pumping and motoring functions. The fan speed is controlled by adjusting the transmission outlet pressure. Although previous results showed the system has relatively higher drive efficiency than conventional hydraulic fan drive at different fan speeds, the control design, and system dynamic performance have not yet been studied. Therefore, in this article, the control design of the cooling fan drive system with power split hydraulic transmission is studied. A feedforward controller based on transmission characteristics is designed to achieve better system performance. A hydraulic fan drive test bench is developed to evaluate system control design. The system dynamic performance with feedforward and feedback controls are compared through both simulation and experimental studies.
