Abstract:A hydraulic free piston engine (HFPE) integrates one hydraulic pump and diesel engine into one compact assembly. As a compound engine used for nonstiff-transmission of power, its internal energy conversion and external energy recuperation process were analyzed. The great advantages such as high fuel-economy, low energy-conversion loss, flexible power combination, multi-substitute fuel and energy recapture were described. Last but not the least, HFPE makes multi-load control easy through serving as power central station and using hydraulic transformer as interface between hydraulic motors and common pressure rail. HFPE has a promising potential in mobile machinery that starts and stops frequently.

Abstract:A hydraulic free piston engine (HFPE) integrated a prime mover and a hydraulic pump-into one compact unit, which realized non-stiffness power transmission utilizing hydraulic pressure energy. Based on the analysis of the developing internal combustion(I.C.) type and monopropellant-powered type hydraulic free piston engine(HFPE), a new type HFPE i.e. bipropellant-powered type HFPE was presented. The working principle, the structure features, the energy-releasing way, the unit power and the advantages of BHFPE (bipropellant-powered type HFPE) were discussed and condensed by comparing with the ICHFPE and MHFPE. The key problems to develop a BHFPE were summarized. It can be concluded that the BHFPE is promising and worthy of research deeply as a new type HFPE.

Abstract:The hydraulic free-piston engine (HFPE) is a kind of hybrid-powered machine which combines the reciprocating piston-type internal combustion engine and the plunger pump as a whole. In recent years, the HFPE has been investigated by a number of research groups worldwide due to its potential advantages of high efficiency, energy savings, reduced emissions and multi-fuel operation. Therefore, our study aimed to assess the operating characteristics, core questions and research progress of HFPEs via a systematic review and meta-analysis. We included operational control, starting characteristics, misfire characteristics, in-cylinder working processes and operating stability. We conducted the literature search using electronic databases. The research on HFPEs has mainly concentrated on four kinds of free-piston engine, according to piston arrangement form: single piston, dual pistons, opposed pistons and four-cylinder complex configuration. HFPE research in China is mainly conducted in Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, Jilin University and the Beijing Institute of Technology. In addition, in China, research has mainly focused on the in-cylinder combustion process while a piston is free by considering in-cylinder combustion machinery and piston dynamics. Regarding future research, it is very important that we solve the instabilities brought about by chance fluctuations in the combustion process, which will involve the hydraulic system’s efficiency, the cyclical variation, the method of predicting instability and the recovery after instability.

Study on Starting Phase of Hydraulic Free Piston Engine

Abstract:To study the starting performance of hydraulic free piston engine(HFPE),the typical starting phases of HFPE were investigated through experiments.According to different starting energy sources and excitement modes in HFPE,4 starting modes of constant pressure valve control,constant pressure position control,starting hydraulic accumulator(SHA) valve control and SHA position control were given.With the change in supply-oil pressure,4 starting performance parameter curves including displacement of the piston assembly,the pressure difference in scavenging chambers,the pressure difference in combustion chambers and the one in the hydraulic chambers of the pump were tested in constant pressure starting mode.The relationship of the 4 parameters above-mentioned and initial accumulated pressure were analyzed in the SHA starting mode.The differences among 4 starting modes on excitement method and energy supplement were discussed.Results show that the position-control mode has better starting performance than valve-control mode,and is suitable for a higher power occasion.Valve-control mode is applicable to a case with lower starting-frequency.

Abstract:Bipropellant-powered hydraulic free piston engine (BHFPE), as a new type of HFPE, takes advantage of bipropellant in place of conventional fossil fuel, and adopts a catalytic ignition instead of the conventional spark or compression ignition. In this paper, the operational principle and working process of a BHFPE are described firstly, then the chemical formula and molar mass as well as the heating value of the bipropellant i.e. kerosene/HIP combination are dealt with respectively. Thereafter analysis on the internal energy-flow i.e. energy input, transfer, dissipation and output, during a working cycle of the BHFPE are analyzed. Additionally the operating parameters such as working efficiency, maximum speed of the free piston assembly (FPA) and the output hydraulic energy are derived.

Abstract:A new type of hydraulic free piston engine was proposed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional internal combustion hydraulic free piston engine which needs to control the compression ratio exactly.The new type engine uses the decomposed hot gases released by the monopropellant to drive the piston assembly to and fro and output hydraulic energy.The influences of the bed load,area ratio,porous and resistance of the catalyst bed on the monopropellant decomposition were studied,and the life of the catalyst bed under the pulse working style was analyzed using Fluent.The operation frequency of the piston and the power output were improved by inserting an exhaust solenoid valves to the dynamic cylinder.The adiabatic ceramic and the suitable design of exhaust ports can reduce the heat loss through the dynamic cylinders.Both the soft seal and hard seal were introduced to reduce the gas in the dynamic cylinder flow into the hydraulic pump and made the system work reliably.

Abstract:Bipropellant-powered hydrauLic free piston engine (BHFPE) is a new type HFPE, which takes advantage of bipropellant in place of conventional fossil fuel, and employs catalytic ignition instead of spark or compression ignition. Under the alternative drive of the left and right combustion chamber, free piston assembly (FPA) within the BHFPE moves Linearly back and forth between left and right extremes and pumps hydrauLic fluid to drive load. Different from crankshaft engine, owing no crank-Link mechanism, the motion of FPA depends entirely on forces that acting on it. Based on introduction of the basic configuration of the BHFPE, the working process and features were described first, and then mathematical models are estabLished as well as simulation of dynamic characteristics are carried out.

Abstract:A new design scheme of hydraulic pumping unit was brought forward to meet the requirements of long-stroke and low-frequency in the process of oil extraction.By adopting the new compound cylinder and combining the technology of electro-hydraulic proportional control and hydraulic counterweight,the unit appears to be more compact and applicative,meets the demands of long-stroke,low-frequency and large-load,and makes stroke and frequency fully-variable.

Abstract:Series hybrid powertrain is a practical way for wheel loader electrification. Conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) technique is mature but the efficiency is limited. Free piston engine generator (FPEG) is regarded as a promising technology that can be applied as decarbonized range extenders attributed to its high thermal efficiency and ultimate fuel flexibility. In this study, a FPEG-based series hybrid powertrain is proposed for wheel loaders to reduce fuel consumption. Multiple FPEG units are parallel connected to power the electric powertrain. The optimal unit commitment of the FPEG set is investigated via dynamic programming. A rule-based strategy called discrete power follower (DPF) is proposed. The influence of FPEG unit number on powertrain performances is studied. Energy efficiency comparison between the FPEG-based and the ICE-based series hybrid powertrains is carried out. Results show that the fuel consumption of the proposed FPEG-based series hybrid powertrain is 10.5 % lower than the ICE-based powertrain. The mean efficiency of wheel loader powertrain improves from 31.7 % to 35.1 %.

Abstract:Hydraulic Confined Piston Engine (HCPE) is a new type power device especially suitable for hydrostatic driving vehicle. Its working process is influenced by complex coupling of liquid, solid and gas. Its working process simulation is the basis of later performance evaluation and design optimization. The structural principle of HCPE is described. The iteration method with stationary point is defined, and its whole operation process is discussed by way of output pressure computation as an example. Through simulation, the fluctuation of the angular speed of crankshaft coincides with the working process; the water pressure in cylinder has great instantaneous pulsation and phase step as outlet valve opening and inlet valve closing.

Abstract:The hydraulic load-sensing system is a more efficient system solution than constant pressure system in mobile machine. However, the overall system efficiency for multiple actuators is still low since this centralized hydraulic control system only adapts to the highest load pressure. Therefore in this paper, a distributed hydraulic control system where each function is powered by a hydraulic free piston engine is proposed. Compared with centralized solution, it is more efficient since the power of hydraulic free piston engine is tailored to each function. By integrating small inertia linear engine and pump piston in one unit, the hydraulic free piston engine is an efficient and fast response hydraulic power source. Since the hydraulic free piston engine is essentially a digital hydraulic power source, a digital load-sensing control is proposed in this study. The system architecture, modeling, controller design and performance of the digital hydraulic load-sensing control system are presented. A test bench is developed to verify the system feasibility and performance.

Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments

Abstract:Free-piston engine generator (FPEG), as an important branch of range extender, is a very competitive development direction. In this paper, a hydrogen-fueled opposed-piston FPEG is proposed, which adopts a mechanical-pressurized structure and a two-layer control strategy based on the inner and outer dead center. The prototype well meets the requirements of stable power generation and vehicle loading. The experimental tests have been conducted, which show that the pure hydrogen is successfully ignited under the cold start condition, the combustion efficiency and generation efficiency reach 30 % and 20 % respectively, and the peak pressure is close to 40 bar. However, the prototype was unable to enter the stable operation stage due to frequent misfire phenomena. Based on the above, the causes of abnormal combustion were discussed and the energy loss of the prototype was calculated. The prototype was simulated to run in the stable operation stage finally, and the future optimization scheme based on control strategy and structure was concluded.

Abstract:Power-supply is one of the bottlenecks that restrict the extensive application and further development of energy self-supplying robots.Based on the present investigation of the conventional energy-packets and power-supply systems, the principle, the energy-releasing way and the advantages of monopropellant powered engines(MPEs), which are dramatically different from the convectional I.C.engines are discussed.The typical working-ability parameters such as the fuel heating values, the expansion coefficient, the adiabatic decomposition temperature as well as the energy density are analyzed by taking high test hydrogen peroxide(HTP) as an example.The research projects and the achievements of the developing MPEs for self-powered robots are described and summarized;the key problems to develop a MPE with the tentative research are presented.It could be concluded that the MPEs are promising and worth researching deeply as power source for energy self-supplying robots.

Abstract:Free piston internal combustion engine linear generator (FPELG) is a novel energy conversion device. Compared with traditional rotary internal combustion engines, FPELG shows many potential advantages due to the elimination of crank-connecting rod mechanism, such as structure simply, the high thermal efficiency, the low emission, the multi-fuel and the multi combustion mode feasibility. Therefore, the FPELG has become a research hot-point in recent years and has achieved a lot of research results. This paper mainly discusses and summarizes the recent technical advances of the FPELG from the research groups worldwide. After a brief introduction on the early research of the free-piston internal combustion engines, its working principle and different configurations are introduced respectively. Then, this paper mainly focuses on the recent research progress of the FPELG from the aspects of modeling and simulation method, experimental approach, and control strategies development. In the end of the paper, the research trend and future development of the FPELG will be prospected. It is concluded that matching and optimizing performances of free-piston internal combustion engine and linear generator are the key research points, and the controlled piston trajectory of the FPELG is the key technology.

Abstract:Exoskeleton robots require powerful and lightweight power supplies. Because of its high power-to-mass ratio and fast response, hydraulic systems can meet the requirement for locomotion robots. In this paper, a novel compact hydraulic power unit (CHPU) is proposed. A two-stroke IC engine, with a rated power of 2.4 kW at 13,000 rpm, is used as the prime mover. The engine drives a high speed (10,000 rpm) piston pump to allow the engine to operate at high power. A spring loaded reservoir has been developed to prevent the pump intake from cavitation and contamination. The payload flow rate is indirectly estimated using the displacements of the actuator. A Ragone plot analysis shows that the CHPU can maintain a high specific power over a long duration. A dynamic model for the CHPU has been developed based upon simplified engine operating characteristics and a set of experimentally identified parameters. A prototype of the CHPU has been constructed with a rated power of 1.45 kW and a weight of 16.6 kg. Experimental testing of the prototype confirms the dynamic model and the output capacity of the CHPU. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
