Abstract:It was shown by Kutnar and \v Sparl in 2009 that every connected vertex-transitive graph of order $6p$, where $p$ is a prime, contains a Hamilton path. In this paper, it will be shown that every such graph contains a Hamilton cycle, except for the triangle-replaced graph of the Petersen graph.

Abstract:It was shown by Kutnar, Maru\v si\v c and Zhang in 2012 that every connected vertex-transitive graph of order $10p$, where $p$ is a prime and $p\ne 7$, contains a Hamilton path, except for graphs $X$ arising from the action of PSL$(2, s^m)$ on cosets of $\mathbb{Z}_s^m\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_{\frac{s^m-1}{10}}$, where $s$ is a prime. In this paper, Hamilton cycles of these exceptions $X$ will be found.

Abstract:A regular graph is semisymmetric if its automorphism group acts transitively on the edge set but not on the vertex set. In this article, we give a complete list of connected semisymmetric graphs of square-free order and valency 5. The list consists of a single graph, the incidence graph of a generalized hexagon of order ( 4 , 4 ) $(4,4)$, and an infinite family arising from some groups with cyclic Fitting subgroup.

Abstract:In 1982, Durnberger proved that every connected Cayley graph of a finite group with a commutator subgroup of prime order contains a hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we extend this result to the infinite case. Additionally, we generalize this result to a broader class of infinite graphs $X$, where the automorphism group of $X$ contains a transitive subgroup $G$ with a cyclic commutator subgroup of prime order.

Abstract:An edge-transitive graph $\varGamma $ is called alternatively connected if a subgroup G of the automorphism group of $\varGamma $ has two orbits on the arc set of $\varGamma $, and there exists an alternative walk (with respect to a given G-orbit on arcs) between every pair of vertices of $\varGamma $. Employing the standard double covers of digraphs, we give some basic properties of alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs. The main result of this paper is a reduction result on alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs of square-free order. As an application of this result, we give a characterization for alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs of square-free order and valency 6. It is proved that such a graph is either a circulant or constructed from $\mathrm{PSL}(2,p)$.

Abstract:We prove that if Cay(G;S) is a connected Cayley graph with n vertices, and the prime factorization of n is very small, then Cay(G;S) has a hamiltonian cycle. More precisely, if p, q, and r are distinct primes, then n can be of the form kp with k < 32 and k not equal to 24, or of the form kpq with k < 6, or of the form pqr, or of the form kp^2 with k < 5, or of the form kp^3 with k < 3.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate orders, longest cycles and the number of cycles of automorphisms of finite vertex-transitive graphs. In particular, we show that the order of every automorphism of a connected vertex-transitive graph with n vertices and of valence d, d ≤ 4 , is at most c d n where c 3 = 1 and c 4 = 9 . Whether such a constant c d exists for valencies larger than 4 remains an unanswered question. Further, we prove that every automorphism g of a finite connected 3-valent vertex-transitive graph Γ, Γ ≇ K 3 , 3 , has a regular orbit, that is, an orbit of 〈 g 〉 of length equal to the order of g. Moreover, we prove that in this case either Γ belongs to a well understood family of exceptional graphs or at least 5/12 of the vertices of Γ belong to a regular orbit of g. Finally, we give an upper bound on the number of orbits of a cyclic group of automorphisms C of a connected 3-valent vertex-transitive graph Γ in terms of the number of vertices of Γ and the length of a longest orbit of C.

Abstract:A path factor in a graph $G$ is a factor of $G$ in which every component is a path on at least two vertices. Let $T\Box P_n$ be the Cartesian product of a tree $T$ and a path on $n$ vertices. Kao and Weng proved that $T\Box P_n$ is hamiltonian if $T$ has a path factor, $n$ is an even integer and $n\geq 4\Delta (T)-2$. They conjectured that for every $\Delta \geq 3$ there exists a graph $G$ of maximum degree $\Delta$ which has a path factor, such that for every even $n< 4\Delta-2$ the product $G\Box P_n$ is not hamiltonian. In this article we prove this conjecture.

Small planar hypohamiltonian graphs

Abstract:A graph is hypohamiltonian if it is non-Hamiltonian, but the deletion of every single vertex gives a Hamiltonian graph. Until now, the smallest known planar hypohamiltonian graph had 40 vertices, a result due to Jooyandeh, McKay, Östergård, Pettersson, and Zamfirescu. That result is here improved upon by two planar hypohamiltonian graphs on 34 vertices. We exploited a special subgraph contained in two graphs of Jooyandeh et al., and modified it to construct the two 34-vertex graphs and six planar hypohamiltonian graphs on 37 vertices. Each of the 34-vertex graphs has 26 cubic vertices, improving upon the result of Jooyandeh et al. that planar hypohamiltonian graphs have 30 cubic vertices. We use the 34-vertex graphs to construct hypohamiltonian graphs of order 34 with crossing number 1, improving the best-known bound of 36 due to Wiener. Whether there exists a planar hypohamiltonian graph on 41 vertices was an open question. We settled this question by applying an operation introduced by Thomassen to the 37-vertex graphs to obtain several planar hypohamiltonian graphs on 41 vertices. The 25 planar hypohamiltonian graphs on 40 vertices of Jooyandeh et al. have no nontrivial automorphisms. The result is here improved upon by six planar hypohamiltonian graphs on 40 vertices with nontrivial automorphisms.

Abstract:An oriented graph is an orientation of a simple graph. In 2009, Keevash, Kühn and Osthus proved that every sufficiently large oriented graph $D$ of order $n$ with $(3n-4)/8$ is Hamiltonian. Later, Kelly, Kühn and Osthus showed that it is also pancyclic. Inspired by this, we show that for any given constant $t$ and positive integer partition $n = n_1 + \cdots + n_t$, if $D$ is an oriented graph on $n$ vertices with minimum semidegree at least $(3n-4)/8$, then it contains $t$ disjoint cycles of lengths $n_1,\ldots , n_t$. Also, we determine the bounds on the semidegree of sufficiently large oriented graphs that are strongly Hamiltonian-connected, $k$-ordered Hamiltonian and spanning $k$-linked.

Abstract:Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $\lambda(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $\lambda(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Pancyclicity of Hamiltonian graphs

Abstract:An $n$-vertex graph is Hamiltonian if it contains a cycle that covers all of its vertices, and it is pancyclic if it contains cycles of all lengths from $3$ up to $n$. In 1972, Erdős conjectured that every Hamiltonian graph with independence number at most $k$ and at least $n = \Omega(k^2)$ vertices is pancyclic. In this paper we prove this old conjecture in a strong form by showing that if such a graph has $n = (2+o(1))k^2$ vertices, it is already pancyclic, and this bound is asymptotically best possible.

Abstract:A graph is \emph{hamiltonian-connected} if every pair of vertices can be connected by a hamiltonian path, and it is \emph{hamiltonian} if it contains a hamiltonian cycle. We construct families of non-hamiltonian graphs for which the ratio of pairs of vertices connected by hamiltonian paths to all pairs of vertices approaches 1. We then consider minimal graphs that are hamiltonian-connected. It is known that any order-$n$ graph that is hamiltonian-connected must have $\geq 3n/2$ edges. We construct an infinite family of graphs realizing this minimum.
