Abstract:Lovász conjectured that every connected vertex-transitive graph contains a hamilton path in 1970. First we reveal the structure of connected vertex-transitive graphs with an odd number of vertices. Then we prove that every connected vertex-transitive graph with an odd number of vertices is hamiltonian.

Abstract:An edge-transitive graph $\varGamma $ is called alternatively connected if a subgroup G of the automorphism group of $\varGamma $ has two orbits on the arc set of $\varGamma $, and there exists an alternative walk (with respect to a given G-orbit on arcs) between every pair of vertices of $\varGamma $. Employing the standard double covers of digraphs, we give some basic properties of alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs. The main result of this paper is a reduction result on alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs of square-free order. As an application of this result, we give a characterization for alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs of square-free order and valency 6. It is proved that such a graph is either a circulant or constructed from $\mathrm{PSL}(2,p)$.

Abstract:Luo, Tian and Wu (2022) conjectured that for any tree $T$ with bipartition $X$ and $Y$, every $k$-connected bipartite graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+t$, where $t=$max$\{|X|,|Y|\}$, contains a tree $T'\cong T$ such that $G-V(T')$ is still $k$-connected. Note that $t=\lceil\frac{m}{2}\rceil$ when the tree $T$ is the path with order $m$. In this paper, we proved that every $k$-connected bipartite graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+ \lceil\frac{m+1}{2}\rceil$ contains a path $P$ of order $m$ such that $G-V(P)$ remains $k$-connected. This shows that the conjecture is true for paths with odd order. And for paths with even order, the minimum degree bound in this paper is the bound in the conjecture plus one.

Abstract:Inspired by Sheehan’s conjecture that no 4 4 -regular graph contains exactly one hamiltonian cycle, we prove results on hamiltonian cycles in regular graphs and nearly regular graphs. We fully disprove a conjecture of Haythorpe on the minimum number of hamiltonian cycles in regular hamiltonian graphs, thereby extending a result of Zamfirescu, as well as correct and complement Haythorpe’s computational enumerative results from [Exp. Math. 27 (2018), no. 4, 426–430]. Thereafter, we use the Lovász Local Lemma to extend Thomassen’s independent dominating set method. This extension allows us to find a second hamiltonian cycle that inherits linearly many edges from the first hamiltonian cycle. Regarding the limitations of this method, we answer a question of Haxell, Seamone, and Verstraete, and settle the first open case of a problem of Thomassen by showing that for k ∈ { 5 , 6 } k \in \{5, 6\} there exist infinitely many k k -regular hamiltonian graphs having no independent dominating set with respect to a prescribed hamiltonian cycle. Motivated by an observation of Aldred and Thomassen, we prove that for every κ ∈ { 2 , 3 } \kappa \in \{ 2, 3 \} and any positive integer k k , there are infinitely many non-regular graphs of connectivity κ \kappa containing exactly one hamiltonian cycle and in which every vertex has degree 3 3 or 2 k 2k .

Abstract:A graph G is 3-domination-critical if its domination number γ is 3 and the addition of any edge decreases γ by 1. Wojcicka conjectured that every 3-domination-critical graph with δ⩾2 has a hamiltonian cycle (J. Graph Theory 14 (1990) 205–215). The conjecture had been proved and its proof consists of two parts: the case α⩽δ+1 (J. Graph Theory 25 (1997) 173–184) and the case α=δ+2 (Discrete Appl. Math. 92 (1999) 57–70). In this paper, we give a new and simple proof of the conjecture by using Hanson's (J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput. 13 (1993) 121–128) and Bondy-Chvátal's (Discrete Math. 15(1976) 111–135) closure operations.
On Hamilton cycles in graphs defined by intersecting set systems

Abstract:In 1970 Lovász conjectured that every connected vertex-transitive graph admits a Hamilton cycle, apart from five exceptional graphs. This conjecture has recently been settled for graphs defined by intersecting set systems, which feature prominently throughout combinatorics. In this expository article, we retrace these developments and give an overview of the many different ingredients in the proofs.

Odd Covers of Complete Graphs and Hypergraphs

Abstract:The `odd cover number' of a complete graph is the smallest size of a family of complete bipartite graphs that covers each edge an odd number of times. For $n$ odd, Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is equal to $(n+1)/2$ or $(n+3)/2$, and they conjectured that it is always $(n+1)/2$. We prove this conjecture. For $n$ even, Babai and Frankl showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is always at least $n/2$, and the above authors and Radhakrishnan, Sen and Vishwanathan gave some values of $n$ for which equality holds. We give some new examples. Our constructions arise from some very symmetric constructions for the corresponding problem for complete hypergraphs. Thus the odd cover number of the complete 3-graph $K_n^{(3)}$ is the smallest number of complete 3-partite 3-graphs such that each 3-set is in an odd number of them. We show that the odd cover number of $K_n^{(3)}$ is exactly $n/2$ for even $n$, and we show that for odd $n$ it is $(n-1)/2$ for infinitely many values of $n$. We also show that for $r=3$ and $r=4$ the odd cover number of $K_n^{(r)}$ is strictly less than the partition number, answering a question of Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin for those values of $r$.

Abstract:A graph is called odd (respectively, even) if every vertex has odd (respectively, even) degree. Gallai proved that every graph can be partitioned into two even induced subgraphs, or into an odd and an even induced subgraph. We refer to a partition into odd subgraphs as an odd colouring of G . Scott proved that a connected graph admits an odd colouring if and only if it has an even number of vertices. We say that a graph G is k ‐odd colourable if it can be partitioned into at most k odd induced subgraphs. The odd chromatic number of G , denoted by χ odd( G ) , is the minimum integer k for which G is k ‐odd colourable. We initiate the systematic study of odd colouring and odd chromatic number of graph classes. We first consider a question due to Scott, which states that every graph G of even order n has χ odd( G ) ≤ c n , for some positive constant c , by proving that this is indeed the case if G is restricted to having girth at least seven. We also show that any graph G whose all components have even order satisfies χ odd( G ) ≤ 2 Δ − 1 , where Δ is the maximum degree of G . Next, we show that certain interesting classes have bounded odd chromatic number. Our main results in this direction are that interval graphs, graphs of bounded modular‐width all have bounded odd chromatic number. In particular, every even interval graph is 6‐odd colourable, and every even graph is 3 m w ‐odd colourable, where m w is the modular width of a graph.

Path Odd-Covers of Graphs

Abstract:We introduce and study "path odd-covers", a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The "path odd-cover number" $p_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in $V(G)$ and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is $E(G)$. We prove an upper bound on $p_2(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $\Delta$ and the number of odd-degree vertices $v_{\text{odd}}$ of the form $\max\left\{v_{\text{odd}}/{2}, 2\left\lceil {\Delta}/{2}\right \rceil\right\}$. This bound is only a factor of $2$ from a rather immediate lower bound of the form $\max \left\{ {v_{\text{odd}} }/{2} , \left\lceil {\Delta}/{2}\right\rceil \right\}$. We also investigate some natural relaxations of the problem which highlight the connection between the path odd-cover number and other well-known graph parameters. For example, when allowing for subdivisions of $G$, the previously mentioned lower bound is always tight except in some trivial cases. Further, a relaxation that allows for the addition of isolated vertices to $G$ leads to a match with the linear arboricity when $G$ is Eulerian. Finally, we transfer our observations to establish analogous results for cycle odd-covers.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 3, Page 2416-2428, September 2024. In 1984, Erdős conjectured that the number of pentagons in any triangle-free graph on [math] vertices is at most [math], which is sharp by the balanced blow-up of a pentagon. This was proved by Grzesik, and independently by Hatami et al. As an extension of this result for longer cycles, we prove that for each odd [math], the balanced blow-up of [math] (uniquely) maximizes the number of [math]-cycles among [math]-free graphs on [math] vertices, as long as [math] is sufficiently large. We also show that this is no longer true if [math] is not assumed to be sufficiently large. Our result strengthens results of Grzesik and Kielak who proved that for each odd [math], the balanced blow-up of [math] maximizes the number of [math]-cycles among graphs with a given number of vertices and no odd cycles of length less than [math]. We further show that if [math] and [math] are odd and [math] is sufficiently large compared to [math], then the balanced blow-up of [math] does not asymptotically maximize the number of [math]-cycles among [math]-free graphs on [math] vertices. This disproves a conjecture of Grzesik and Kielak.

Abstract:Let G be a complete convex geometric graph, and let F be a family of subgraphs of G. A blocker for F is a set of edges, of smallest possible size, that has an edge in common with every element of F. In [C. Keller and M. A. Perles, Blockers for simple Hamiltonian paths in convex geometric graphs of even order, Disc. Comput. Geom., 60(1) (2018), pp. 1-8] we gave an explicit description of all blockers for the family of simple (i.e., non-crossing) Hamiltonian paths (SHPs) in G in the `even' case |V(G)|=2m. It turned out that all the blockers are simple caterpillar trees of a certain class. In this paper we give an explicit description of all blockers for the family of SHPs in the `odd' case |V(G)|=2m-1. In this case, the structure of the blockers is more complex, and in particular, they are not necessarily simple. Correspondingly, the proof is more complicated.

Abstract:The graph polytopes arising from the vertex weighted graph, which was first introduced and studied by Bóna, Ju, and Yoshida. A conjecture states that for a simple connected graph, the polynomial in the numerator of the Ehrhart series is palindromic. We confirm the conjecture. Furthermore, we introduce the hypergraph polytope. We prove that the simple connected unimodular hypergraph polytopes are integer polytopes. We also prove the polynomial in the numerator of the Ehrhart series of simple connected uniform hypergraph polytopes is palindromic.

Abstract:Infinite generalizations of theorems in finite combinatorics were initiated by Erdős due to his famous Erdős-Menger conjecture (now known as the Aharoni-Berger theorem) that extends Menger's theorem to infinite graphs in a structural way. We prove a generalization of this manner of the classical result about packing edge-disjoint $ T $-paths in an ``inner Eulerian'' setting obtained by Lovász and Cherkassky independently in the '70s.

Abstract:A graph is \emph{hamiltonian-connected} if every pair of vertices can be connected by a hamiltonian path, and it is \emph{hamiltonian} if it contains a hamiltonian cycle. We construct families of non-hamiltonian graphs for which the ratio of pairs of vertices connected by hamiltonian paths to all pairs of vertices approaches 1. We then consider minimal graphs that are hamiltonian-connected. It is known that any order-$n$ graph that is hamiltonian-connected must have $\geq 3n/2$ edges. We construct an infinite family of graphs realizing this minimum.
