Abstract:We prove that every 52-connected line graph of a rank 3 hypergraph is Hamiltonian. This is the first result of this type for hypergraphs of bounded rank other than ordinary graphs.

Abstract:We establish the threshold function for the property that the line graph of a random $r$-uniform hypergraph has a Hamilton cycle. The main result gives also the threshold function for Hamiltonicity of uniform random intersection graphs with a bounded number of attributes assigned to each vertex. The problem is closely related to Berge Hamilton cycles in random $r$-uniform hypergraphs.

Abstract:For integers <math>k≥3</math> and <math>1≤ℓ≤k−1</math>, we prove that for any <math>α>0</math>, there exist <math>ϵ>0</math> and <math>C>0</math> such that for sufficiently large <math>n∈(k−ℓ)N</math>, the union of a k-uniform hypergraph with minimum vertex degree <math>αnk−1</math> and a binomial random k-uniform hypergraph <math>G(k)(n,p)</math> with <math>p≥n−(k−ℓ)−ϵ</math> for <math>ℓ≥2</math> and <math>p≥Cn−(k−1)</math> for <math>ℓ=1</math> on the same vertex set contains a Hamiltonian ℓ-cycle with high probability. Our result is best possible up to the values of ϵ and C and answers a question of Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every 3-connected claw-free graph such that every induced cycle of length at least 4 has at most 8 edges contained in a triangle is hamiltonian. This implies that every 3-connected $\{K_{1,3}\}\cup \{C_i|i\ge 9\}$-free graph is hamiltonian. We also show that every 3-connected o-heavy graph whose induced cycle of length is at most 8 is hamiltonian and that every 2-connected claw-free graph of longest induced cycle with length at least $n-2$ is hamiltonian. These results are all best possible. As a byproduct, we show that it is NP-complete to determine the length of a longest induced cycle of a line graph.

Abstract:We show that for all $k\geq 4$, $\varepsilon >0$, and $n$ sufficiently large, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices in which each set of $k-3$ vertices is contained in at least $(5/8 + \varepsilon) \binom{n}{3}$ edges contains a tight Hamilton cycle. This is asymptotically best possible.

Abstract:We show that every $3$-connected $\{K_{1,3},\Gamma_3\}$-free graph is Hamilton-connected, where $\Gamma_3$ is the graph obtained by joining two vertex-disjoint triangles with a path of length $3$. This resolves one of the two last open cases in the characterization of pairs of connected forbidden subgraphs implying Hamilton-connectedness. The proof is based on a new closure technique, developed in a previous paper, and on a structural analysis of small subgraphs, cycles and paths in line graphs of multigraphs. Abstract:Inspired by Sheehan’s conjecture that no 4 4 -regular graph contains exactly one hamiltonian cycle, we prove results on hamiltonian cycles in regular graphs and nearly regular graphs. We fully disprove a conjecture of Haythorpe on the minimum number of hamiltonian cycles in regular hamiltonian graphs, thereby extending a result of Zamfirescu, as well as correct and complement Haythorpe’s computational enumerative results from [Exp. Math. 27 (2018), no. 4, 426–430]. Thereafter, we use the Lovász Local Lemma to extend Thomassen’s independent dominating set method. This extension allows us to find a second hamiltonian cycle that inherits linearly many edges from the first hamiltonian cycle. Regarding the limitations of this method, we answer a question of Haxell, Seamone, and Verstraete, and settle the first open case of a problem of Thomassen by showing that for k ∈ { 5 , 6 } k \in \{5, 6\} there exist infinitely many k k -regular hamiltonian graphs having no independent dominating set with respect to a prescribed hamiltonian cycle. Motivated by an observation of Aldred and Thomassen, we prove that for every κ ∈ { 2 , 3 } \kappa \in \{ 2, 3 \} and any positive integer k k , there are infinitely many non-regular graphs of connectivity κ \kappa containing exactly one hamiltonian cycle and in which every vertex has degree 3 3 or 2 k 2k .

Higher-dimensional counterexamples to Hamiltonicity

Abstract:For $d \ge 2$, we show that all graphs of $d$-polytopes have a Hamiltonian line graph if and only if $d \ne 3$: We exhibit a graph of a $3$-polytope on $252$ vertices whose line graph does not even have Hamiltonian paths. Adapting a construction by Grünbaum and Motzkin, for large $n$ we also construct simple 3-polytopes on $3n$ vertices in whose line graph any simple path is shorter than $10 n^{\alpha}$, for some constant $\alpha<1$. Moreover, we give four elementary counterexamples of plausible extensions to simplicial complexes of four famous results in Hamiltonian graph theory.

Hamilton cycles in pseudorandom graphs

Abstract:Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $\lambda(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $\lambda(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Abstract:Chen et al. (1998) proved that every 18-tough chordal graph has a Hamilton cycle. Improving upon their bound, we show that every 10-tough chordal graph is Hamiltonian (in fact, Hamilton-connected). We use Aharoni and Haxell's hypergraph extension of Hall's Theorem as our main tool.

Abstract:We present a tight extremal threshold for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs with large minimum degree and without a large ``bipartite hole`` (two disjoint sets of vertices with no edges between them). This result extends Dirac's classical theorem, and is related to a theorem of Chvátal and Erdős. In detail, an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole in a graph $G$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $S$ and $T$ with $|S|= s$ and $|T|=t$ such that there are no edges between $S$ and $T$; and $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$ is the maximum integer $r$ such that $G$ contains an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole for every pair of non-negative integers $s$ and $t$ with $s + t = r$. Our central theorem is that a graph $G$ with at least $3$ vertices is Hamiltonian if its minimum degree is at least $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$. From the proof we obtain a polynomial time algorithm that either finds a Hamilton cycle or a large bipartite hole. The theorem also yields a condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We see that for dense random graphs $G(n,p)$, the probability of failing to contain many edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles is $(1 - p)^{(1 + o(1))n}$. Finally, we discuss the complexity of calculating and approximating $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$.

Another Hamiltonian Cycle in Bipartite Pfaffian Graphs

Abstract:Finding a Hamiltonian cycle in a given graph is computationally challenging, and in general remains so even when one is further given one Hamiltonian cycle in the graph and asked to find another. In fact, no significantly faster algorithms are known for finding another Hamiltonian cycle than for finding a first one even in the setting where another Hamiltonian cycle is structurally guaranteed to exist, such as for odd-degree graphs. We identify a graph class -- the bipartite Pfaffian graphs of minimum degree three -- where it is NP-complete to decide whether a given graph in the class is Hamiltonian, but when presented with a Hamiltonian cycle as part of the input, another Hamiltonian cycle can be found efficiently. We prove that Thomason's lollipop method~[Ann.~Discrete Math.,~1978], a well-known algorithm for finding another Hamiltonian cycle, runs in a linear number of steps in cubic bipartite Pfaffian graphs. This was conjectured for cubic bipartite planar graphs by Haddadan [MSc~thesis,~Waterloo,~2015]; in contrast, examples are known of both cubic bipartite graphs and cubic planar graphs where the lollipop method takes exponential time. Beyond the lollipop method, we address a slightly more general graph class and present two algorithms, one running in linear-time and one operating in logarithmic space, that take as input (i) a bipartite Pfaffian graph $G$ of minimum degree three, (ii) a Hamiltonian cycle $H$ in $G$, and (iii) an edge $e$ in $H$, and output at least three other Hamiltonian cycles through the edge $e$ in $G$. We also present further improved algorithms for finding optimal traveling salesperson tours and counting Hamiltonian cycles in bipartite planar graphs with running times that are not known to hold in general planar graphs.

Abstract:In this paper we use theoretical and computational tools to continue our investigation of $K_2$-hamiltonian graphs, that is, graphs in which the removal of any pair of adjacent vertices yields a hamiltonian graph, and their interplay with $K_1$-hamiltonian graphs, that is, graphs in which every vertex-deleted subgraph is hamiltonian. Perhaps surprisingly, there exist graphs that are both $K_1$- and $K_2$-hamiltonian, yet non-hamiltonian, for example, the Petersen graph. Grünbaum conjectured that every planar $K_1$-hamiltonian graph must itself be hamiltonian; Thomassen disproved this conjecture. Here we show that even planar graphs that are both $K_1$- and $K_2$-hamiltonian need not be hamiltonian, and that the number of such graphs grows at least exponentially. Motivated by results of Aldred, McKay, and Wormald, we determine for every integer $n$ that is not 14 or 17 whether there exists a $K_2$-hypohamiltonian, that is, non-hamiltonian and $K_2$-hamiltonian, graph of order $n$, and characterise all orders for which such cubic graphs and such snarks exist. We also describe the smallest cubic planar graph which is $K_2$-hypohamiltonian, as well as the smallest planar $K_2$-hypohamiltonian graph of girth $5$. We conclude with open problems and by correcting two inaccuracies from the first article.

Abstract:A conjecture by Rafla from 1988 asserts that every simple drawing of the complete graph $K_n$ admits a plane Hamiltonian cycle. It turned out that already the existence of much simpler non-crossing substructures in such drawings is hard to prove. Recent progress was made by Aichholzer et al. and by Suk and Zeng who proved the existence of a plane path of length $\Omega(\log n / \log \log n)$ and of a plane matching of size $\Omega(n^{1/2})$ in every simple drawing of $K_{n}$.

Pancyclicity of Hamiltonian graphs

Abstract:An $n$-vertex graph is Hamiltonian if it contains a cycle that covers all of its vertices, and it is pancyclic if it contains cycles of all lengths from $3$ up to $n$. In 1972, Erdős conjectured that every Hamiltonian graph with independence number at most $k$ and at least $n = \Omega(k^2)$ vertices is pancyclic. In this paper we prove this old conjecture in a strong form by showing that if such a graph has $n = (2+o(1))k^2$ vertices, it is already pancyclic, and this bound is asymptotically best possible.

Abstract:Chvátal conjectured in 1973 the existence of some constant $t$ such that all $t$-tough graphs with at least three vertices are hamiltonian. While the conjecture has been proven for some special classes of graphs, it remains open in general. We say that a graph is $(K_2 \cup 3K_1)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_2 \cup 3K_1$, where $K_2 \cup 3K_1$ is the disjoint union of an edge and three isolated vertices. In this paper, we show that every 3-tough $(K_2 \cup 3K_1)$-free graph with at least three vertices is hamiltonian.
