Abstract:The range and speed of a moving object can be ascertained using the sensing technique known as light detection and ranging (LiDAR). It has recently been suggested that quantum LiDAR, which uses entangled states of light, can enhance the capabilities of LiDAR. Entangled pulsed light is used in prior quantum LiDAR approaches to assess both range and velocity at the same time using the pulses' time of flight and Doppler shift. The entangled pulsed light generation and detection, which are crucial for pulsed quantum LiDAR, are often inefficient. Here, we study a quantum LiDAR that operates on a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW), as opposed to pulses. We first outline the design of the quantum FMCW LiDAR using entangled frequency-modulated photons in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and we demonstrate how it can increase accuracy and resolution for range and velocity measurements by $\sqrt{n}$ and $n$, respectively, with $n$ entangled photons. We also demonstrate that quantum FMCW LiDAR may perform simultaneous measurements of the range and velocity without the need for quantum pulsed compression, which is necessary in pulsed quantum LiDAR. Since the generation of entangled photons is the only inefficient nonlinear optical process needed, the quantum FMCW LiDAR is better suited for practical implementations. Additionally, most measurements in the quantum FMCW LiDAR can be carried out electronically by down-converting optical signal to microwave region.

Abstract:Quantum illumination has been proposed and demonstrated to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in light detection and ranging (LiDAR). When relying on coincidence detection alone, such a quantum LiDAR is limited by the timing jitter of the detector and suffers from jamming noise. Inspired by the Zou-Wang-Mandel experiment, we design, construct, and validate a quantum induced coherence (QuIC) LiDAR which is inherently immune to ambient and jamming noises. In traditional LiDAR the direct detection of the reflected probe photons suffers from deteriorating SNR for increasing background noise. In QuIC LiDAR we circumvent this obstacle by only detecting the entangled reference photons, whose single-photon interference fringes are used to obtain the distance of the object, while the reflected probe photons are used to erase path information of the reference photons. In consequence, the noise accompanying the reflected probe light has no effect on the detected signal. We demonstrate such noise resilience with both LED and laser light to mimic the background and jamming noise. Abstract:Abstract Quantum-inspired imaging techniques have been proven to be effective for LiDAR with the advances of single photon detectors and computational algorithms. However, the quantum-limited performance is still far from its ultimate limit set by the quantum fluctuations of signal and noise photons. In this work, we propose and demonstrate LiDAR from the detection perspective for approaching quantum-limited performance. A photon-number-resolving detector is introduced to accurately reconstruct the echo signals in a wide photon-flux range and an active photon number filter is further developed to overcome the heavy background noise. The Fisher information of this LiDAR based on a coherent source is only 0.04 dB below the quantum limit in intensity detection when mean signal photon number is 10. An improvement of 41.17 dB in the signal-to-background ratio is achieved with the proposed LiDAR in daytime, and the accuracy of intensity estimation is consistent with the theoretical prediction, which helps to improve the quality of reconstructed images. This work provides a fundamental strategy for constructing a noise tolerant LiDAR approaching quantum-limited precision.

Abstract:Non-local effects have the potential to radically move forward quantum enhanced LiDAR to provide an advantage over classical LiDAR not only in laboratory environments but practical implementation. In this work, we demonstrate a 43dB lower signal-to-noise ratio using a quantum enhanced LiDAR based on time-frequency entanglement compared with a classical phase-insensitive LiDAR system. Our system can tolerate more than 3 orders of magnitude higher noise than classical singlephoton counting LiDAR systems before detector saturation. To achieve these advantages, we use non-local cancellation of dispersion to take advantage of the strong temporal correlations in photon pairs in spite of the orders of magnitude larger detector temporal uncertainty. We go on to incorporate this scheme with purpose-built scanning collection optics to image non-reflecting targets in an environment with noise.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully solid-state beam scanner that incorporates a Si3N4 photonic integrated switch array, a collimator lens, and a lithographically patterned diffraction grating. The off-chip components enable nearly circular output beams under the reduced system complexity. By manipulating the optical switch array and tuning the input wavelength, two-dimensional beam steering with $32\times23$ = 736 resolvable spots across a $14.3^{\circ }\times 9.9^{\circ }$ field of view (FOV) is realized. Furthermore, the coherent ranging within 18 m is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing the triangular frequency modulation. The tested results validate the feasibility of the proposed beam scanner, which might offer a flexible, scalable, and easily-implemented solution for the solid-state frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR.
Compact All-Fiber Quantum-Inspired LiDAR with > 100dB Noise Rejection and Single Photon Sensitivity

Abstract:Entanglement and correlation of quantum light can enhance LiDAR sensitivity in the presence of strong background noise. However, the power of such quantum sources is fundamentally limited to a stream of single photons and cannot compete with the detection range of high-power classical LiDAR transmitters. To circumvent this, we develop and demonstrate a quantum-inspired LiDAR prototype based on coherent measurement of classical time-frequency correlations. This system uses a high-power classical source and maintains the high noise rejection advantage of quantum LiDARs. In particular, we show that it can achieve over 100dB rejection (with 100ms integration time) of indistinguishable(with statistically identical properties in every degrees of freedom) in-band noise while still being sensitive to single photon signals. In addition to the LiDAR demonstration, we also discuss the potential of the proposed LiDAR receiver for quantum information applications. In particular, we propose the chaotic quantum frequency conversion technique for coherent manipulation of high dimensional quantum states of light. It is shown that this technique can provide improved performance in terms of selectivity and efficiency as compared to pulse-based quantum frequency conversion.

Abstract:The Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, also called two-photon interference, which is pivotal in quantum information processing, serves as the foundation for our coherent two-photon wind detection method, achieving time-frequency discrimination. Our method capitalizes on the complete erasure of phase and color distinctions with up-conversion detectors, allowing for the observation of HOM interference among independently sourced photons without necessitating delay tuning or active synchronization. The integration of quantum erasure enhances the bandwidth in both space-time and frequency domains, paving the way for ultrafast, continuous velocity detection up to tens of km/s. The demonstration uses just 14% pulse energy of previous levels, enabling a wind detection range up to 16 km, marking a quantum leap in remote sensing capabilities.

Abstract:Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (LIDAR), which offers high depth resolution and immunity to environmental disturbances, has emerged as a strong candidate technology for active imaging applications. In general, hundreds of photons per pixel are required for accurate three-dimensional (3D) imaging. When it comes to the low-flux regime, however, depth estimation has limited robustness. To cope with this, we propose and demonstrate a photon-efficient approach for FMCW LIDAR. We first construct a FMCW LIDAR setup based on single-photon detectors where only a weak local oscillator is needed for the coherent detection. Further, to realize photon-efficient imaging, our approach borrows the data from neighboring pixels to enhance depth estimates, and employs a total-variation seminorm to smooth out the noise on the recovered depth map. Both simulation and experiment results show that our approach can produce high-quality 3D images from ∼10 signal photons per pixel, increasing the photon efficiency by 10-fold over the traditional processing method. The high photon efficiency will be valuable for low-power and rapid FMCW applications.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth and fast-chirped frequency are essential in frequency-modulated continuous-wave lasers. We introduce a laser that meets these requirements by coupling a distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q microring resonator, where a bulky stacked piezoelectric chip is attached to the resonator for fast tuning. The laser demonstrates an ultranarrow intrinsic linewidth of 22 Hz in the self-injection-locked state. Actuated by the bulky piezoelectric chip, the maximum triangular actuation bandwidth can reach 100 kHz. The driving voltage is filtered to avoid a resonant mechanical mode, obtaining the minimum residual linearity error at 10 kHz with a 4.2 GHz tuning range. A light detection and ranging system was set up for a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating a high detection precision with standard deviations of 2.7 and 4.0 cm for targets at 15 and 30 m, respectively.

Abstract:We propose a quantum-enhanced lidar system to estimate a target's radial velocity, which employs squeezed and frequency-entangled signal and idler beams. We compare its performance against a classical protocol using a coherent state with the same pulse duration and energy, showing that quantum resources provide a precision enhancement in the estimation of the velocity of the object. We identify three distinct parameter regimes characterized by the amount of squeezing and frequency entanglement. In two of them, a quantum advantage exceeding the standard quantum limit is achieved assuming no photon losses. Additionally, we show that an optimal measurement to attain these results in the lossless case is frequency-resolved photon counting. Finally, we consider the effect of photon losses for the high-squeezing regime, which leads to a constant factor quantum advantage higher than 3 dB in the variance of the estimator, given a roundtrip lidar-to-target-to-lidar transmissivity larger than 50%.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system, which employs double-sideband modulation combining with injection-locking to generate triangular linear frequency modulation light source. A fiber laser working as master laser is modulated by a Mach-Zehnder modulator to produce two first-order sidebands with tuning range of 8-14 GHz, one of which is extracted and amplified by a slave distributed feedback laser. A large carrier suppression ratio up to 20 dB is realized. The experiment results show the spatial resolution of the proposed LiDAR is 2.5 cm, equaling to the theoretical value. The velocity measurement is also performed by extracting Doppler shift. Finally, by combining the proposed LiDAR with 2-axis mechanical galvanometer scanner, the 3D imaging with high precision is realized, and the real scene is well restored. The proposed LiDAR system realizes pure linear frequency modulation without complex linearization algorithm or clock sampling circuit, and has advantages of simple structure and high precision.
A microcomb-empowered Fourier domain mode-locked LiDAR

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has emerged as an indispensable tool in autonomous technology. Among its various techniques, frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR stands out due to its capability to operate with ultralow return power, immunity to unwanted light, and simultaneous acquisition of distance and velocity. However, achieving a rapid update rate with sub-micron precision remains a challenge for FMCW LiDARs. Here, we present such a LiDAR with a sub-10 nm precision and a 24.6 kHz update rate by combining a broadband Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) laser with a silicon nitride soliton microcomb. An ultrahigh frequency chirp rate up to 320 PHz/s is linearized by a 50 GHz microcomb to reach this performance. Our theoretical analysis also contributes to resolving the challenge of FMCW velocity measurements with nonlinear frequency sweeps and enables us to realize velocity measurement with an uncertainty below 0.4 mm/s. Our work shows how nanophotonic microcombs can unlock the potential of ultrafast frequency sweeping lasers for applications including LiDAR, optical coherence tomography and sensing.
