Abstract:Here, we propose a metasurface based on the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2), which can switch between the meta-lens and the absorber by controlling temperature. Before phase change, VO2 is in the insulating phase and the metasurface proposed here works as a focusing lens near the wavelength of 10.6 mu m. When the temperature rises above the phase change point (341 K), VO2 becomes metallic and the metasurface will change into a good absorber, which absorbs more than 90% of the incident light energy. Moreover, in this case, the metasurface still has a meta-lens feature that will operate on the residual light. The special application of our metasurface as a light-dose sensitive smart meta-lens for bio-imaging is discussed.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:We have proposed an all-dielectric polarization-independent metalens, which can be used for sub-wavelength focusing. The phase discontinuity of transmission light is produced by varying the diameter of the nanopillar. In this way, the incident light can be focused into sub-wavelength spot. Besides, finite-difference time-domain results show that near diffraction limit focusing is realized for the wavelength from 580 nm to 750 nm, which means the proposed metalens possesses a broad operation bandwidth. This all-dielectric metalens features polarization independent and broad bandwidth, and thus promises great potential for the applications of nanolithography, dense storage and biophotonics.

Abstract:We propose a graphene-based metasurface of metalens, which consists of a ring structure composed of double oblique slits and four semicircular grooves. As the thickness of the base layer increases with the radius, the propagation length shows a decreasing trend and the effective refractive index is the opposite. Under the action of the incident wave at 632.8 nm, the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) generated in the double oblique slits interfere with the semicircular grooves at different positions to form different phase delays. SPPs propagate to a distant focus, and appear the focusing phenomenon in space, with the focal length and full height at half maximum reaching 2.7 mu m and 284 nm, respectively. At the same time, the focusing intensity can be flexibly adjusted by changing the graphene Fermi level. Finally, the designed metalens was used for lithography research, and the contrast ratio was 0.98. The research of this metalens has been widely used in energy harvesting, imaging and sensing.
Broadband Achromatic Polarization Insensitive Metalens Design in the Near-Infrared Spectrum

Abstract:Over the past decade, metalens exhibit great potential for applications in compact optical devices. By modulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of the incident light, metalens are applied in a variety of flat optical components, such as micro spectrometers, polarizers and light-field imaging. However, the intrinsic effect of metalens with large chromatic aberration significantly restricts its application in wide-spectrum imaging. Herein, we developed a broadband achromatic polarization insensitive metalens operating in the NIR region in transmission mode. The particle swarm algorithm was utilized to improve the wave aberration by optimizing the reference phase corresponds to each designed wavelength. FDTD simulation was conducted to characterize the focusing performance of the metalens. The focal length of the metalens changes less than 4µm as the incident wavelength is varied from 1µm to 1.4µm. The maximum focusing efficiency of the designed metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.45 is about 43% near wavelength λ = 1.33µm. This research also paves a way for the application of metalens in night vision imaging.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have provided new opportunities for the realization of flat lenses, among which tunable metalenses have garnered considerable attention due to their flexible functionalities. In this paper, we present a continuously tunable metalens based on the phase-change material Sb$_{2}$S$_{3}$, which enables precise and continuous focal length control through the transition of states. Under the excitation of linearly polarized light at 1550 nm, phase compensation is provided by changing the crystallization state of the Sb$_{2}$S$_{3}$ nanopillars, allowing the focal length to continuously shift between 36 $\mu$m and 48 $\mu$m. At the same time, the metalens maintains a high focusing efficiency over 75%. This approach provides greater design flexibility and broader applicability across diverse applications. By reducing the reliance on polarized light sources, it enhances device integration and tunability, paving the way for new opportunities in the practical implementation of metalenses in advanced optical imaging and nanophotonics.

As one of the most practicable devices among the many applications of metasurface, metalens can extremely reduce the size as well as complexity of optical systems and realizes the higher optical quality compared with conventional lens. So it will be very potential to use metalens in integration systems to reaching higher integration and efficiency. In addition, dynamic control is always desirable in optical systems. In this work, we firstly design a near-infrared tunable metalens treating phase change materials as the meta-atoms which makes the tunable metalens become more compact. At designed wavelength of 1.55 mu m, the focusing efficiency of our amorphous metalens is more than 16 times of the efficiency when it works at crystalline state, and its focal length can stay almost unchanged when the GST state is switched. The broadband performance of the metalens is also confirmed. This work may bring some good opportunities for the revolution of the next generation tunable integrated optics.

Planar Metalens Realizing Subwavelength Focusing

Abstract:Planar metalens composed of V-shaped nano-antennas which can realize subwavelength focusing has been fabricated by Focused Ion Beam etching technology. The metalens was completely flat due to the phase manipulation deriving from the different V-shaped nano-antennas aligned in concentric circles. Comparing to conventional curved lens, the as-made metalens was flat and ultrathin (less than thickness of 100 nm) with light weight. Simulation results demonstrated that the focal length can be accurately controlled by changing the arrangement of the nano-antennas.
Metalens with mono-layered-film phase compensation mechanism realizing subwavelength focusing

Abstract:In optical systems, the lens is the most important element, which has been widely used. Conventional lens takes advantage of its convex interface to change the phase along the light path, in order to focus light to a point in the focal plane. However, their spatial resolution is limited to approximately half of the working wavelength restricting the fine observation of tiny objects particular biological samples. Recently superlenses with high resolution focusing property beyond diffraction limit have been proposed without phase compensation resulting in the lack of ability of focus plane wave. We proposed metalens at mid-infrared region made of metamaterials slab and a phase compensation based on mono-layered concave film realizing subwavelength focusing ability (lambda/3). The metamaterials slab consists of 200-layered metal-dielectric structure (doped GaN-Si) possessing hyperbolic regime. The curve shape and electromagnetic property of phase compensation mono-layered concave film is obtained through restrict theoretical computation which related to the parameters of the metamaterials slab. The proposed metalens can also be easily extended to three dimension for realistic application as conventional optical lens.

Abstract:Flat, gradient index, metasurface optics - in particular all-dielectric metalenses - have emerged and evolved over recent years as compact, lightweight alternative to their conventional bulk glass/crystal counterparts. Here we show that the focal properties of all-dielectric metalenses can be switched via coherent control, which is to say by changing the local electromagnetic field in the metalens plane rather than any physical or geometric property of the nanostructure or surrounding medium. The selective excitation of predominantly electric or magnetic resonant modes in the constituent cells of the metalens provides for switching, by design, of its phase profile enabling binary switching of focal length for a given lens type and, uniquely, switching between different (spherical and axicon) lens types.
Tunable Multifocal THz Metalens Based on Metal-Insulator Transition of VO2 Film

Abstract:Recently, metalenses which consist of metasurface arrays, have attracted attention due to their more condensed size in comparison with conventional lenses. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable coding metasurface hybridized with vanadium dioxide (VO2) for wavefront manipulation at terahertz (THz) frequencies. At room temperature, the unit-cell can reflect as a "1" bit under linearly y polarized illuminated waves. Besides, when the temperature is increased, VO2 would be in a fully metallic state; therefore, unit-cell can act as a "0" reflection phase. Furthermore, by changing the unit-cells arrangements on a metalens surface, the proposed device can focus the incident beam at any position according to a particular design. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the designed VO2-assisted metasurface can generate one and multi-focal spot in reflection mode as expected. Also, theoretical results depict an excellent agreement with obtained simulation results. The presented metalens has notable potential in THz high-resolution imaging and optical coding.

Abstract:Varifocal metalenses with tunable focal length allowing for transforming the complex and bulky tunable lens kit into a single flat lens, show great potential applications in tomography techniques, 3D displays, multi-imaging processing, among others. However, varifocal metalenses that integrate key properties, such as modest efficiency, large NA as well as polarization insensitivity into one remain elusive. Here, we present a generic design principle enabling binary switching of polarization-insensitive bifocal metalenses via simply switching two target wavelengths. The underlying mechanism relies on independently tailoring two sets of distinct anisotropic nanofins that are intelligently integrated into a monolayer single-celled phase-change metasurface in the form of "cross" or "straight" composite, which not only enables the crosstalks between two wavelength channels minimized, but also allows for the metalens design to be endowed polarization-insensitive and varifocal performance while maintaining high focusing efficiency and diffraction-limited performance. Due to the noninterleaved arrangement making the meta-structure more compact, wavelength-actuated varifocal metalens with ultrahigh-NAs (0.89 and 0.95, respectively corresponding to the target wavelengths of λ1 and λ2) can be implemented with a field of view of 4° based on this principle. Additionally, we also demonstrate the versatility of our approach by successfully implementing the generation of the polarization-insensitive varifocal focusing optical vortex. Our design can easily extend to visible or THz wavebands and will enable enormous applications in miniaturized imaging devices such as cell phones, wearable displays, and virtual reality (VR)/augmented reality (AR).

Abstract:Metasurfaces have powerful light field manipulation capabilities, which have been extensively studied in the past few years and have developed rapidly in various fields. At present, the focus of metasurface research has shifted to the tunable functionality. In this paper, a temperature-controllable multifunctional metasurface lens based on phase transition material is designed. First of all, by controlling the temperature of the desired working area and the polarization of the incident light, switching among multiple focus, single focus, and no focus at any position can be achieved, and the intensity and helicity of the output light can be adjusted. In addition, a polarization-sensitive intensity-tunable metalens based on the P-B phase principle is designed, when the incident light is linearly polarized light, left-handed circularly polarized light, or right-handed circularly polarized light, it has the same focal point but with different light field intensities. Therefore, the focused intensity can be tunable by the polarization state of the incident light.

Visible-light Metalens Far-Field Nanofocusing Effects with Active Tuning of Focus Based on MIM Subwavelength Structures Used in an Integrated Imaging Array

Abstract:We propose a structure of a far-field nanofocusing metalens with focal shifting that is actively tuned at visible wavelengths. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be excited by the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) subwavelength structure at visible wavelengths. The coherent interference of SPPs emitted by subwavelength nanostructures can form a nanoscale focus. When the SPPs are excited and pass through several concentric ring gratings with specific aspect ratios, the extraordinary optical transmission phenomenon occurs. Two metal concentric ring gratings achieve double diffraction, scattering light to the far field. An anisotropic or isotropic electrically adjustable refractive index material, such as liquid-crystal or optical phase change material, is filled in a dielectric layer between two metal layers, and the effective refractive index is modulated by electronically controlled active tuning. The focal shift is achieved by changing the effective refractive index of the intermediate dielectric. In addition, different incident wavelengths correspond to different effective refractive indices to achieve time-division-multiplexing multi-wavelength achromatic focusing. The finite-difference time-domain method was used to simulate the effect of substrate effective refractive index variation on achromatic superfocusing. The results show that the super-resolution focal spot ( F W H M = 0.158 λ 0 ) with long focal length ( F L = 5.177 λ 0 ) and large depth of field ( D O F = 3.412 λ 0 ) can be achieved by optimizing the design parameters. The visible plasma metalens has potential applications in high-density optical storage and optical microscopic imaging, especially in three-dimensional display for light field and integral imaging.

Abstract:Metasurfaces can arbitrarily manipulate electromagnetic wavefronts within ultrathin dimensions, paving the way for flat and highly integrated photonic devices. However, the simultaneous realization of dynamic tunability, high modulation depth, and wavelength-dependent properties remains a significant challenge. Here, we use the all-metallic C-shaped antennas to achieve a wavelength-multiplexed dynamic metalens with high modulation depths. Owing to the presence of a bottom metal film and the strong coupling of corner modes, the resonant modes in the antenna have narrower bandwidths and greater wavelength shifts (>200 nm). By spatially arranging the antennas with different radii and opening angles, a wavelength-multiplexed varifocal and switchable metalens is successfully demonstrated numerically. Moreover, the modulation depth of the dynamically switchable metalens can reach up to 50 dB, and the switchable property exhibits a broadband response (Δλ ≈ 150 nm). The proposed all-metallic C-shaped antenna with low ohmic loss and high sensitivity facilitates the design of tunable metasurface devices and increases the tuning degree of freedom. It provides a new method to realize reconfigurable, multiplexed, and multifunctional metasurface devices.

Abstract:Multifunctional metalens with tunable focus and intensity is powerfully attractive for compact planar optics. However, the limited degree of freedom in the single-layer metasurface design makes it difficult to satisfy more complicated functionalities, which restricts the application scenarios of metalens. In this paper, a multifunctional metalens with three operating modes is designed at near-infrared wavelength by combining the phase-change material antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) with the bilayer Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase. By reversibly transforming the upper and lower Sb 2 Se 3 nanofins between the crystalline and amorphous states, the metalens can achieve arbitrary switching among dual-focus F 1 and F 2 , single-focus F 1 , and single-focus F 3 . Moreover, when the upper Sb 2 Se 3 nanofin is remained in the amorphous state, a bifocal metalens with tunable relative intensity is achieved by controlling the crystallization state of the lower Sb 2 Se 3 nanofin, and the total focusing efficiency of the bifocal metalens is above 86%. Similarly, when the upper Sb 2 Se 3 nanofin is in the crystalline state, a single-focus metalens with adjustable intensity is realized via adjusting the crystallization fraction of the lower Sb 2 Se 3 nanofin. Regardless of whether the metalens operates in bifocal or single focal mode, the simulated focusing efficiency is higher than 53% and the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of each focus approaches its diffraction-limited value. The proposed multifunctional metalens can enable wide potential applications in biomedical imaging, optical communication systems, multifunctional devices, and so on.
