Abstract:Higher integration, smaller size, and better performance are the trends of device development. Metasurfaces exhibit the versatile manipulation capabilities on electromagnetic fields and have provided a powerful tool to build compact electromagnetic devices with various complex functions. In this work, we develop one branch of multifunctional metasurface device that not only affects the transmission but also controls the reflected light as well. A coplanar embedded design for the purpose of the metalens and displaying feature, has been specifically investigated, that is, dielectric metalenses embedded within nanorod printed pictures. By tailoring the freedom of polarizations, we show that an animation display can be obtained utilizing a high-quality transmission metalens. The picture can be freely engineered and its influence to the metalens could be effectively controlled. A random element distribution method based on coherent transfer function is introduced to minimize the diffraction effect of the reflection patterns. The simulation results indicate the possibility of interleaving the metalens with a classic display panel in order to enhance the dual performance. This work vastly exposes the advantages of metasurface, which will be helpful in the next exploration of new compact optical devices with integrated multiple functionalities.
Helicity-multiplexed bifocal geometric metalenses at visible wavelength

Abstract:Metasurface optical elements such as metalenses have drawn great attentions for their capabilities of manipulating wavefront versatilely and miniaturizing traditional optical devices into ultrathin counterparts, and multi-functional metasurfaces such as bifocal metalenses have attracted tremendous interests due to their potential in system integration. In this paper, an approach to design polarization-dependent bifocal metalenses which are able to independently generate longitudinally or transversely bifocal spots under the incidence of circularly polarized light with arbitrary ellipticity is proposed and demonstrated by full-wave simulations. When the designed devices are illuminated with elliptically polarized lights at wavelength of 532 nm, both of the helicity-multiplexed bifocal spots appear simultaneously, and the relative intensity of both focal spots can be tuned in terms of the ellipticity of the polarization state. In addition, a polarization-independent metalens based on geometric phase modulation is illustrated and the focusing efficiency of it maintains stable ignoring the polarization state of the incident waves, which could be of vital importance in real applications. This design is of enormous potential of being applied in real compact optical systems such as imaging, display, microscopy, tomography, optical data storage and so on.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for various applications enabled by their strong light manipulation capabilities. Their monolithic designs offer the convenience to incorporate novel natural materials in order to realize advanced electromagnetic (EM) functionalities. Here, based on the usage of the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2). a switchable metasurface that could work at two different working states is proposed. With insulating VO2, we show that helicity-dependent metasurface could be rigorously designed by adopting two phase variables, i.e., initial phase and Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase, which is verified by showing an asymmetric photonic spin Hall effect (APSHE). When VO2 goes into the metallic phase (e.g.. by raising the operating temperature above similar to 341K), the loss factor of the unit cell will be enhanced. and in this case with the assistance of multimode resonances, the metasurface will turn into a perfect broadband circular-polarization-insensitive EM absorber. Based on these, switchable beam splitters and focus-lenses have been designed and discussed in the paper. Abstract:Multifunctional metalens with tunable focus and intensity is powerfully attractive for compact planar optics. However, the limited degree of freedom in the single-layer metasurface design makes it difficult to satisfy more complicated functionalities, which restricts the application scenarios of metalens. In this paper, a multifunctional metalens with three operating modes is designed at near-infrared wavelength by combining the phase-change material antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) with the bilayer Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase. By reversibly transforming the upper and lower Sb 2 Se 3 nanofins between the crystalline and amorphous states, the metalens can achieve arbitrary switching among dual-focus F 1 and F 2 , single-focus F 1 , and single-focus F 3 . Moreover, when the upper Sb 2 Se 3 nanofin is remained in the amorphous state, a bifocal metalens with tunable relative intensity is achieved by controlling the crystallization state of the lower Sb 2 Se 3 nanofin, and the total focusing efficiency of the bifocal metalens is above 86%. Similarly, when the upper Sb 2 Se 3 nanofin is in the crystalline state, a single-focus metalens with adjustable intensity is realized via adjusting the crystallization fraction of the lower Sb 2 Se 3 nanofin. Regardless of whether the metalens operates in bifocal or single focal mode, the simulated focusing efficiency is higher than 53% and the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of each focus approaches its diffraction-limited value. The proposed multifunctional metalens can enable wide potential applications in biomedical imaging, optical communication systems, multifunctional devices, and so on.

Abstract:Metasurfaces can arbitrarily manipulate electromagnetic wavefronts within ultrathin dimensions, paving the way for flat and highly integrated photonic devices. However, the simultaneous realization of dynamic tunability, high modulation depth, and wavelength-dependent properties remains a significant challenge. Here, we use the all-metallic C-shaped antennas to achieve a wavelength-multiplexed dynamic metalens with high modulation depths. Owing to the presence of a bottom metal film and the strong coupling of corner modes, the resonant modes in the antenna have narrower bandwidths and greater wavelength shifts (>200 nm). By spatially arranging the antennas with different radii and opening angles, a wavelength-multiplexed varifocal and switchable metalens is successfully demonstrated numerically. Moreover, the modulation depth of the dynamically switchable metalens can reach up to 50 dB, and the switchable property exhibits a broadband response (Δλ ≈ 150 nm). The proposed all-metallic C-shaped antenna with low ohmic loss and high sensitivity facilitates the design of tunable metasurface devices and increases the tuning degree of freedom. It provides a new method to realize reconfigurable, multiplexed, and multifunctional metasurface devices.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Metalenses with non-trivial performance, abundant applications, and tremendous potential, have emerged as a flat optical element or configuration in recent years. The increasing concerns about how to integrate more functions into a single metalens have become a hot topic. Here, based on a genetic algorithm, we demonstrate several metalenses with more than two optical functions depending on the wavelength of light. We first design three arbitrary chromatic dispersive metalenses, whose focal planes can be determined at will at different wavelengths. Then, a metalens-based color router is presented, which is able to guide and focus the light with four wavelengths to different positions. Furthermore, we exhibit a tri-functional structured light generator to produce focused beam, focused orbital angular momentum beam, and the Bessel beam at three wavelengths, respectively. Our results may have potential applications in dispersion manipulation, optical micro-manipulation, and subwavelength resolution spectral imaging.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have powerful light field manipulation capabilities, which have been extensively studied in the past few years and have developed rapidly in various fields. At present, the focus of metasurface research has shifted to the tunable functionality. In this paper, a temperature-controllable multifunctional metasurface lens based on phase transition material is designed. First of all, by controlling the temperature of the desired working area and the polarization of the incident light, switching among multiple focus, single focus, and no focus at any position can be achieved, and the intensity and helicity of the output light can be adjusted. In addition, a polarization-sensitive intensity-tunable metalens based on the P-B phase principle is designed, when the incident light is linearly polarized light, left-handed circularly polarized light, or right-handed circularly polarized light, it has the same focal point but with different light field intensities. Therefore, the focused intensity can be tunable by the polarization state of the incident light.

Abstract:Metalenses recently have attracted attention because of their more compact size in comparison with conventional lenses; they can also achieve better optical performance with higher resolution. Duplexer is an interesting function of a metalens that can distinguish different sources and divide them into two parts for specific purposes. In this article, we design tunable duplex metalenses with phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 for the first time. Two types of special unit cells are designed to modulate the incident lights, and four metalenses are designed based on the two types of unit cells. Specific phase profiles are calculated for different sections of metalens in which the corresponding unit cells are settled; accordingly, the metalenses can focus the incident lights at any positions according to our design. Moreover, the metalenses become selectable via tuning the state of phase-change material, which means that the output light field can be actively controlled. The proposal of our tunable duplex metalenses will offer new opportunities for active three-dimensional imaging or optical coding.

Abstract:Metalens, an ultra-thin optical element composed of subwavelength structure, offers a new path for the development of miniaturized device imaging. Through the design of subwavelength units, arbitrary modulation of the phase, amplitude, and polarization of electromagnetic waves can be achieved. However, current metalenses generally suffer from the disadvantages of narrowband and Ohmic losses, which limits the development of high-quality imaging. In this work, using all-dielectric hole-array structure within the framework of effective medium theory, we demonstrate the achromatic focusing effect based on the basic Huygens principle. Moreover, by changing the position of the point source, this metalens can also achieve directional refraction with flexible angles. Our results provide a new solution for the practical application of miniaturized integrated high-quality imaging, and may open up avenues for constructing efficient artificial metasurface with metamaterials for energy harvesting and other wave manipulation.

Abstract:Metalens is one kind of two-dimensional ultrathin lenses with subwavelength artificial structures that can focus light in a compact, flexible way. However, most strategies for designing metalenses only work on one specific spin state of light (i.e., either right- or left-circularly polarized light), hindering simultaneous control of both spins. Utilizing both the Pancharatnam-Berry phase and the propagation phase, we can rationally control the phase for each spin state of light. As proof-of-concept demonstrations, here we numerically and experimentally realize the independent focusing and manipulation of both spins of light by V-antenna metasurfaces, which can be regarded as the demonstration of the photonic spin Hall effect. Our multidimensional metalens is able to focus light of different spins at designated positions along both transverse and longitudinal directions. It can be used as a polarization analyzer to distinguish the polarization state of incident light. In addition, our multifunctional metalens can act either as a convex lens or an axicon, depending on the spin of light. The demonstrated multidimensional and multifunctional metalens has versatile potentials in spin-dependent nanophotonics, ranging from optical imaging and micro/nano-object manipulation to optical sensing.

Abstract:This work introduces a polarization‐dependent pitch‐switchable metalens array for adaptive optics systems. Addressing limitations of conventional microlens arrays, it achieves adaptability across multiple wavelengths and achromatic performance via structural dispersion engineering. Experimental results demonstrate phase reconstruction with variable spatial resolution, enhancing adaptability for diverse applications in light‐field imaging and machine vision. The wavefront sensor is a crucial component in the adaptive optics system (AOS), responsible for detecting aberrated wavefronts. However, The Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor with single‐pitch microlens array is limited in its adaptability to different observing conditions, affecting wavefront reconstruction accuracy. And conventional microlens arrays are wavelength‐specific. Here, a polarization‐dependent pitch‐switchable metalens array based on non‐interleaved silicon metasurfaces is proposed, capable of working at multiple wavelengths. By controlling the incident and outgoing light polarization, three metalens arrays with customized pitches can be switched at will. Furthermore, achromatic performance is achieved in the 950 nm and 1030 nm wavelengths through structural dispersion engineering. Finally, wavefront detection experiments are finally conducted to demonstrate the phase reconstruction with variable spatial resolution. The metalens array with high flexibility in wavefront sensor can further enhance the adaptability of AOS and has great potential for applications in light‐field imaging, and machine vision, etc.

Abstract:Metalenses with dynamically controllable smart materials have attracted growing attention for next-generation integrated intelligent optical and photonics systems. Here, we incorporate an electrochromic material into the Au nanorod-based metalens, and demonstrate that the intensity of the focused visible light can be controlled by an external voltage without using any mechanical moving parts, while the focal length and the focal spot size remain stable. Furthermore, a large modulation depth (>90%) is obtained with relatively low power consumption ( ∼ 3 mW/cm2). Such ultracompact electrical-controlled metalenses may enable miniaturization and integration of various optical components and systems such as optical imaging, optical sensing and optical communications.

Abstract:As two-dimensional metamaterials, metasurfaces open up new avenues for designing static planar optics. However, the dynamic modulation of metasurfaces in the optical band is required for practical applications. The existing dynamic devices rarely utilized the polarization manipulation capability of metasurfaces. Here, we demonstrate an electrically tunable multifunctional metasurface in the visible range by integrating birefringent liquid crystals (LCs) with all-dielectric metasurfaces based on a novel packaging scheme. By combining the helicity-dependent geometric phase of the metasurface and the polarization control ability of LC molecules, continuous intensity tuning and switching of two helicity channels are realized. Electrically tunable single-channel switchable metaholograms, multicolor multiplexed metaholograms, and dynamic varifocal metalenses are designed to verify the concept. The exploration of polarization control in dynamic tuning can pave the way for dynamic metasurface devices in various applications, such as space light modulators, light detection and ranging systems, and holographic displays.

Abstract:Metasurfaces draw everyone's attention because they can precisely control the phase, amplitude and polarization of emergent light to achieve light field control in recent years. As one of the most practicable devices among the many applications of metasurface, metalens can extremely reduce the size as well as complexity of optical systems and realizes the higher optical quality compared with conventional lens. So it will be very potential to use metalens in integration systems to reaching higher integration and efficiency. In addition, dynamic control is always desirable in optical systems. In this work, we firstly design a near-infrared tunable metalens treating phase change materials as the meta-atoms which makes the tunable metalens become more compact. At designed wavelength of 1.55 mu m, the focusing efficiency of our amorphous metalens is more than 16 times of the efficiency when it works at crystalline state, and its focal length can stay almost unchanged when the GST state is switched. The broadband performance of the metalens is also confirmed. This work may bring some good opportunities for the revolution of the next generation tunable integrated optics.

Abstract:As ultrathin optical elements with subwavelength structures densely arranged, planar lens or called metalens can effectively focus incident wave. Due to the compact design and wide operating frequency of metalens, it becomes promising in applications like information encryption, imaging, and wireless communication fields. However, the fabrication of large-aperture metalens is still time-consuming and costly while the focusing performances are commonly tuned by introducing active materials requiring extra stimuli, such as laser and electrical pulses. In this study, five designs of metalenses with synthetic rectangular aperture are proposed and demonstrated with excellent focusing performances. By reconfiguring the synthetic aperture, focusing properties like focusing lengths, full width at half maximum values, and modulation transfer function can be tuned with great flexibility. With a polarization-dependent phase-shifting structure, the proposed metalens shows different focusing performances with incident wave under transverse magnetic field and transverse electric field modes. By utilizing spatial multiplexing, terahertz variable foci metalenses based on a stretchable single-, dual- and quad-axis synthetic rectangular optical sparse aperture are investigated to achieve tunable multifocal performances. These designs provide a novel strategy that can reconfigure the synthetic aperture with stretchable substrate to make metalens with multifunction and active tunability, which show promising applications in imaging, information encryption, and space telescope areas.
