Abstract:Flow injection analysis (FIA) usually exploits calibration based on peak heights, taking advantage of reproducible timing and sample dispersion. However, as a kinetic analytical method, accuracy in FIA may be sometimes hindered by matrix effects, as those affecting the reaction rate, and calibration approaches to circumvent these effects are essential to obtain reliable results. In this sense, multi-energy calibration (MEC), which has been successfully explored to circumvent matrix effects in spectrometric analysis, is potentially attractive. It relies on only two calibration solutions prepared by addition of either a standard or a diluent to the sample and measurements at different wavelengths. In this work, MEC and analogous multi-signal approaches exploiting analytical responses obtained at different dispersion degrees, flow rates, reactor lengths, and sample injected volumes were pioneering adapted to FIA, taking the merging zones approach for in-line preparation of the calibration solutions. The calibration approaches successfully circumvented Schlieren effect and yielded more accurate results in the acidity-dependent molybdenum blue method for phosphorus determination in diverse samples (beef liver, milk powder, and oyster tissue), as demonstrated by results in agreement with the standard reference materials (SRM) mass fractions at the 95% confidence level and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.07, versus 1.36 for external standard calibration. The results expanded the concept of MEC with multi-signal calibration based on analytical parameters other than multi-wavelength measurements to circumvent matrix effects in a simple and practical way.
