Abstract:We obtain several presentations by generators and relations for the rook partition monoids and algebras, as well as their singular ideals. Among other results, we also calculate the minimal sizes of generating sets (some of our presentations use such minimal-size generating sets), and show that the singular part of the rook partition monoid is generated by its idempotents.

Abstract:Due to the theorems of Cayley and Vagner-Preston, the full transformation monoids and the symmetric inverse monoids play analogous roles in the theory of monoids and inverse monoids, as the symmetric group does in the theory of groups. Every presentation for the finite full transformation monoids $T_n$, symmetric inverse monoids $I_n$, and partial transformation monoids $PT_n$ contains a monoid presentation for the symmetric group. In this paper we show that the number of relations required, in addition to those for the symmetric group, for each of these monoids are at least $4$, $3$, and $8$, respectively. We also give presentations for: $T_n$ with $4$ additional relations when $n$ is odd and $n\geq 5$; and $5$ additional relations for all $n\geq 4$; for $I_n$ with $3$ additional relations for all $n \geq 3$; and for $PT_n$ with $9$ relations for all $n\geq 4$. The presentations for $T_n$ and $I_n$ answer open problems in the literature.

Abstract:In a 2022 paper, Dawsey, Just and the present author prove that the set of integer partitions, taken as a monoid under a partition multiplication operation I defined in my Ph.D. work, is isomorphic to the positive integers as a monoid under integer multiplication. In this note, I extend partition multiplication to the set of overpartitions, which are of much interest in partition theory. I prove the overpartitions form an Abelian group under partition multiplication. Moreover, the overpartitions and the positive rational numbers are isomorphic as multiplicative groups. I then prove further overpartition isomorphisms and discuss approaches to a ring theory of overpartitions.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the submonoids $\mathcal{OPDI}_n$, $\mathcal{MDI}_n$ and $\mathcal{ODI}_n$ of the dihedral inverse monoid $\mathcal{DI}_n$ of all orientation-preserving, monotone and order-preserving transformations, respectively. Our goal is to exhibit presentations for each of these three monoids.

Abstract:We give the definition of presentations of linear monoidal categories. Our main result is that given a presentation of a linear monoidal category, we can produce a presentation of the same category as a linear category. We apply this result to endomorphism algebras of certain important linear monoidal categories.

Abstract:Monoids generated by elements of order two appear in numerous places in the literature. For example, Coxeter reflection groups in geometry, Kuratowski monoids in topology, various monoids generated by regular operations in language theory and so on. In order to initiate a classification of these monoids, we are interested in the subproblem of monoids, called strict 2-PIMs, generated by an involution and an idempotent. In this case we show, when the monoid is finite, that it is generated by a single equation (in addition to the two defining the involution and the idempotent). We then describe the exact possible forms of this equation and classify them. We recover Kuratowski's theorem as a special case of our study.

Diagrammatic presentations of enriched monads and varieties for a subcategory of arities

Abstract:The theory of presentations of enriched monads was developed by Kelly, Power, and Lack, following classic work of Lawvere, and has been generalized to apply to subcategories of arities in recent work of Bourke-Garner and the authors. We argue that, while theoretically elegant and structurally fundamental, such presentations of enriched monads can be inconvenient to construct directly in practice, as they do not directly match the definitional procedures used in constructing many categories of enriched algebraic structures via operations and equations. Retaining the above approach to presentations as a key technical underpinning, we establish a flexible formalism for directly describing enriched algebraic structure borne by an object of a $V$-category $C$ in terms of parametrized $J$-ary operations and diagrammatic equations for a suitable subcategory of arities $J \hookrightarrow C$. On this basis we introduce the notions of diagrammatic $J$-presentation and $J$-ary variety, and we show that the category of $J$-ary varieties is dually equivalent to the category of $J$-ary $V$-monads. We establish several examples of diagrammatic $J$-presentations and $J$-ary varieties relevant in both mathematics and theoretical computer science, and we define the sum and tensor product of diagrammatic $J$-presentations. We show that both $J$-relative monads and $J$-pretheories give rise to diagrammatic $J$-presentations that directly describe their algebras. Using diagrammatic $J$-presentations as a method of proof, we generalize the pretheories-monads adjunction of Bourke and Garner beyond the locally presentable setting. Lastly, we generalize Birkhoff's Galois connection between classes of algebras and sets of equations to the above setting.

Interacting Monoidal Structures with Applications in Computing

Abstract:With a view on applications in computing, in particular concurrency theory and higher-dimensional rewriting, we develop notions of $n$-fold monoid and comonoid objects in $n$-fold monoidal categories and bicategories. We present a series of examples for these structures from various domains, including a categorical model for a communication protocol and a lax $n$-fold relational monoid, which has previously been used implicitly for higher-dimensional rewriting and which specialises in a natural way to strict $n$-categories. A special set of examples is built around modules and algebras of the boolean semiring, which allows us to deal with semilattices, additively idempotent semirings and quantales using tools from classical algebra.

Groups with presentations in EDT0L

Abstract:To any family of languages LAN, let us associate the class, denoted $\pi(\text{LAN})$, of finitely generated groups that admit a group presentation whose set of relators forms a language in LAN. We show that the class of L-presented groups, as introduced by the first author in 2003, is exactly the class of groups that admit presentations in the family of languages EDT0L. We show that the marked isomorphism problem is not semi-decidable for groups given by EDT0L presentations, contrary to the finite presentation case. We then extend and unify results of the first author with Eick and Hartung about nilpotent and finite quotients, by showing that it is possible to compute the marked hyperbolic and marked metabelian quotients of a group given by an EDT0L presentation. Finally, we show how the results about quotient computations enable the construction of recursively presented groups that do not have EDT0L presentations, thus proving $\pi(\text{EDT0L})\ne \pi(\text{REC})$. This is done by building a residually nilpotent group with solvable word problem whose sequence of maximal nilpotent quotients is non-computable.

The modular representation theory of monoids

Abstract:This paper develops the fundamentals of modular representation theory for finite monoids, introducing the decomposition matrix and exploring its connection to Brauer characters. We define modular characteristic and explain how the representation theory in nonmodular positive characteristic behaves like the characteristic zero theory by showing that one can lift from nonmodular characteristic $p$ all simple and projective indecomposable modules, as well as a quiver presentation of the basic algebra. As an application of the theory developed, we give a new proof of Glover's theorem that the monoid of $2\times 2$-matrices over $\mathbb F_p$ has infinite representation type over fields of characteristic $p$. We also investigate the relationship between nonsingularity of the Cartan matrix of a monoid algebra in characterstic zero and in positive characteristic. We show that for von Neumann regular monoids the Cartan matrix is always nonsingular and we show that if a monoid has aperiodic left (or right) stabilizers, then nonsingularity in characteristic zero implies nonsingularity in positive characteristic. Florian Eisele has recently shown that the Cartan matrix of a monoid algebra can be nonsingular in characteristic zero and singular in positive characteristic, disproving a conjecture of the author in an earlier version of this paper. A new conjecture is proposed, unifying the cases of regular monoids and monoids with aperiodic stabilizers.

Infinite families of triangle presentations

Abstract:A triangle presentation is a combinatorial datum that encodes the action of a group on a $2$-dimensional triangle complex with prescribed links, which is simply transitive on the vertices. We provide the first infinite family of triangle presentations that give rise to lattices in exotic buildings of type $\widetilde{\text{A}_2}$ of arbitrarily large order. Our method also gives rise to infinite families of triangle presentations for other link types, such as opposition complexes in Desarguesian projective planes.

Abstract:We show that being finitely presentable and being finitely presentable with solvable word problem are quasi-isometry invariants of finitely generated left cancellative monoids. Our main tool is an elementary, but useful, geometric characterization of finite presentability for left cancellative monoids. We also give examples to show that this characterization does not extend to monoids in general, and indeed that properties such as solvable word problem are not isometry invariants for general monoids.

On minimal presentations of numerical monoids

Abstract:We consider the classical problem of determining the largest possible cardinality of a minimal presentation of a numerical monoid with given embedding dimension and multiplicity. Very few values of this cardinality are known. In addressing this problem, we apply tools from Hilbert functions and free resolutions of artinian standard graded algebras. This approach allows us to solve the problem in many cases and, at the same time, identify subtle difficulties in the remaining cases. As a by-product of our analysis, we deduce results for the corresponding problem for the type of a numerical monoid.

The word problem of finitely presented special inverse monoids via their groups of units

Abstract:A special inverse monoid is one defined by a presentation where all the defining relations have the form $r = 1$. By a result of Ivanov Margolis and Meakin the word problem for such an inverse monoid can often be reduced to the word problem in its maximal group image together with membership in a particular submonoid of that group, called the prefix monoid, being decidable. We prove several results that give sufficient conditions for the prefix membership problem of a finitely presented group to be decidable. These conditions are given in terms of the existence of particular factorisations of the relator words. In particular we are able to find sufficient conditions for a special inverse monoid, its maximal group image and its group of units to have word problems that are algorithmically equivalent. These results extend previous results for one-relator groups to arbitrary finitely presented groups. We then apply these results to solve the word problem in various families of E-unitary special inverse monoids. We also find some criteria for when amalgamations of E-unitary inverse monoids are themselves E-unitary.

On groups of units of special and one-relator inverse monoids

Abstract:We investigate the groups of units of one-relator and special inverse monoids. These are inverse monoids which are defined by presentations where all the defining relations are of the form $r=1$. We develop new approaches for finding presentations for the group of units of a special inverse monoid, and apply these methods to give conditions under which the group admits a presentation with the same number of defining relations as the monoid. In particular our results give sufficient conditions for the group of units of a one-relator inverse monoid to be a one-relator group. When these conditions are satisfied these results give inverse semigroup theoretic analogues of classical results of Adjan for one-relator monoids, and Makanin for special monoids. In contrast, we show that in general these classical results do not hold for one-relator and special inverse monoids. In particular, we show that there exists a one-relator special inverse monoid whose group of units is not a one-relator group (with respect to any generating set), and we show that there exists a finitely presented special inverse monoid whose group of units is not finitely presented.

Abstract:We give an example of a monoid with finitely many left and right ideals, all of whose Schutzenberger groups are presentable by finite complete rewriting systems, and so each have finite derivation type, but such that the monoid itself does not have finite derivation type, and therefore does not admit a presentation by a finite complete rewriting system. The example also serves as a counterexample to several other natural questions regarding complete rewriting systems and finite derivation type. Specifically it allows us to construct two finitely generated monoids M and N with isometric Cayley graphs, where N has finite derivation type (respectively, admits a presentation by a finite complete rewriting system) but M does not. This contrasts with the case of finitely generated groups for which finite derivation type is known to be a quasi-isometry invariant. The same example is also used to show that neither of these two properties is preserved under finite Green index extensions.
Maximal subgroups of finitely presented special inverse monoids

Abstract:We study the maximal subgroups (also known as group $\mathcal{H}$-classes) of finitely presented special inverse monoids. We show that the maximal subgroups which can arise in such monoids are exactly the recursively presented groups, and moreover every such maximal subgroup can also arise in the $E$-unitary case. We also prove that the possible groups of units are exactly the finitely generated recursively presented groups; this improves upon a result of, and answers a question of, the first author and Ruškuc. These results give the first significant insight into the maximal subgroups of such monoids beyond the group of units, and the results together demonstrate that it is possible for the subgroup structure to have a complexity which significantly exceeds that of the group of units. We also observe that a finitely presented special inverse monoid (even an $E$-unitary one) may have infinitely many pairwise non-isomorphic maximal subgroups.
