Abstract:Selective capture of ethane (C2H6) from ethylene (C2H4) mixtures is critical for the direct production of polymer-grade ethylene. However, it remains a great challenge to design industrially potential porous materials with satisfied capacity and separation selectivity. Herein, we reported a series of low cost and easy-attainable biomass carbon-derived activated carbons (ACs) by alkali activation that show remarkable C2H6/C2H4 separation performance. A systematic research study was conducted to study the effects of different carbon sources, different activators, and activation temperatures on their separation performance of the corresponding afforded ACs. The C2H6 adsorption capacity (6.36 mmol g(-1)) and the C2H6/C2H4 (1/1 v/v) selectivity (2.6) of alkali-treated coconut shell ACs CAC-X-Y (X represents the activated temperature, Y represents the ratio of KOH/C) are superior to those of the most reported ethane-selective materials, and 99.9% purity of C2H4 could be directly obtained from C2H6/C2H4 mixtures. It is noteworthy that the cost of CAC-derived ACs is estimated to be only around $20 per kg, demonstrating their great industrial potential for gas separations.
Resorcinol–formaldehyde Resin-Based Porous Carbon Spheres with High CO2 Capture Capacities

Abstract:Porous carbon spheres are prepared by direct carbonization of potassium salt of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin spheres, and are investigated as CO2 adsorbents. It is found that the prepared carbon materials still maintain the typical spherical shapes after the activation, and have highly developed ultra-microporosity with uniform pore size, indicating that almost the activation takes place in the interior of the polymer spheres. The narrow-distributed ultra-micropores are attributed to the "in-situ homogeneous activation" effect produced by the mono-dispersed potassium ions as a form of -OK groups in the bulk of polymer spheres. The CS-1 sample prepared under a KOH/resins weight ratio of 1 shows a very high CO2 capture capacity of 4.83 mmol/g and good CO2/N-2 selectivity of similar to 17-45. We believe that the presence of a welldeveloped ultra-microporosity is responsible for excellent CO2 sorption performance at room temperature and ambient pressure. Facile, Low-Cost, and Sustainable Preparation of Hierarchical Porous Carbons from Ion Exchange Resin: an Improved Potassium Activation Strategy

Abstract:Active carbons were prepared from low cost ion exchange resin, the samples were characterized by means of low temperature (-196 degrees C) N-2 adsorption, XPS, SEM, TEM, etc., and performance in CO2 and phenol adsorption were evaluated. It was found that samples with hierarchical structures and highly developed micro-mesoporous system could be obtained owing to the pre-induced highly dispersed potassium species by ion exchange, which served as an efficient activation agent, this represents an important improvement as compared with the normally reported KOH activation protocol in terms of lowering the usage of the corrosive KOH, and thus the sustainability of the obtained material. The optimized sample, R-K-700, showed the highest CO2 and phenol uptake of 13.6 wt.% and 167.3 mg/g, respectively, and more importantly, samples with an ordered spherical form and similar adsorption performance to the powdered sample can be easily fabricated, making the current carbons and preparation methodology a great promise for practical applications. Facile Synthesis of MOF-5-derived Porous Carbon with Adjustable Pore Size for CO2 Capture

Abstract:In this study, a facile strategy is reported for the preparation of porous carbon materials with adjustable pore size through carbonization of MOF-5 at 900 degrees C with the assistance of different additives. Results show that the physical and chemical properties (such as morphology, carbon defect content, BET specific surface area, pore structure) of the porous carbon materials can be adjusted through introduction of different compounds (i.e., C16H32O2, C6H14O6, C18H36O2, Na2CO3, KOH, Cu(NO3)2, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, ethyl cellulose) during the carbon-ization processes. CO2 adsorption experiment results show that there is a linear relationship between the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) and the cumulative pore volume of pores at 5-7 angstrom, suggesting that pores in the range of 5-7 angstrom play a major role in CO2 adsorption at such condition. While the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) is independent on the BET specific surface area of the materials. Among the prepared porous carbon materials, 5C-C6H14O6-900 exhibits the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (i.e., 3.32 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 1 bar, 0.88 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar), with good adsorption/desorption cycle stability and CO2/N2 selectivity. Our work provides a facile and general method to adjust and control the pore size dis-tribution of MOF-derived porous carbon materials. Besides, the analysis results indicate that the micropores in a specific pore size range play a decisive role in the adsorption of CO2 at low pressure, which provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents at low pressures.
Structurally Designed Synthesis of Mechanically Stable Poly(benzoxazine-co-resol)-Based Porous Carbon Monoliths and Their Application As High-Performance CO2 Capture Sorbents

Abstract:Porous carbon monoliths with defined multi-length scale pore structures, a nitrogen-containing framework, and high mechanical strength were synthesized through a self-assembly of poly(benzoxazine-co-resol) and a carbonization process. Importantly, this synthesis can be easily scaled up to prepare carbon monoliths with identical pore structures. By controlling the reaction conditions, porous carbon monoliths exhibit fully interconnected macroporosity and mesoporosity with cubic Im3m symmetry and can withstand a press pressure of up to 15.6 MPa. The use of amines in the synthesis results in a nitrogen-containing framework of the carbon monolith, as evidenced by the cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning NMR characterization. With such designed structures, the carbon monoliths show outstanding CO2 capture and separation capacities, high selectivity, and facile regeneration at room temperature. At similar to 1 bar, the equilibrium capacities of the monoliths are in the range of 3.3-4.9 mmol g(-1) at 0 degrees C and of 2.6-3.3 mmol g(-1) at 25 degrees C, while the dynamic capacities are in the range of 2.7-4.1 wt % at 25 degrees C using 14% (v/v) CO2 in N-2. The carbon monoliths exhibit high selectivity for the capture of CO2 over N-2 from a CO2/N-2 mixture, with a separation factor ranging from 13 to 28. Meanwhile, they undergo a facile CO2 release in an argon stream at 25 degrees C, indicating a good regeneration capacity.

Abstract:Graphical abstract of CO2 adsorption studies over palmyra palm fruit shell activated carbon Using chemical activation techniques at dissimilar carbonization temperatures, activated carbon adsorbents were produced from Palmyra palm fruit biomass in this work. X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, CHNS‐elemental analysis, and N2 adsorption studies were among the characterization techniques used to assess the characteristics of the carbon adsorbents. The carbon adsorbents from Palmyra palm fruit were used to absorb CO2 in a temperature range of 25–70°C. The findings of the characterization showed that these carbons have a large surface area and microporosity. The temperature of carbonization and the activating agent had an impact on the surface characteristics. The samples with the highest adsorption capacity, 4.70 mmol/g at 25°C, were the activated carbons made by treating them with KOH and then carbonizing them at 750°C. The physicochemical properties of the adsorbents provided an explanation for their high adsorption capacity. The adsorbents showed simple desorption and maintained constant activity during ten cycles of recycling.

Selectable Microporous Carbons Derived from Poplar Wood by Three Preparation Routes for CO 2 Capture

Abstract:Biomass-derived porous carbons are one kind of sustainable, extensive, and flexible carbon material for CO2 capture. Here, we prepared several microporous carbons from poplar wood by three preparation routes. Especially, the residues of the poplar wood after the bioethanol process were explored as precursors to prepare activated carbon by KOH and ZnCl2 activation. By the adjustment of the preparation routes and the optimization of the activation conditions, these porous carbons exhibited diversified morphology (sponge, nanosheets, and honeycomb structure), tunable porosity (specific surface areas: 511–2153 m2/g), and narrow micropore distribution (0.55–1.2 nm). These carbons had a high CO2 uptake of up to 217 mg/g at 273 K and 1 bar, which was comparable with those of many N-doped porous carbons, and possessed moderate isosteric heat of CO2 adsorption (21.1–43.2 kJ/mol), good cyclic ability, and high CO2/N2 selectivity (Henry's law: 44.0). The results indicated that CO2 uptake of these carbons was mainly decided by their micropore volume (d < 1.0 nm) at 273 K and 1 bar. This work provides an important reference for preparing promising CO2 adsorbents with tunable structures from similar biomass resources.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous ZSM-5 (HP-ZSM-5) was constructed using organosilanes as the growth inhibitors for CO2 capture. The properties of adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of carbon dioxide, and Al-27 magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance. It was found that HP-ZSM-5 samples synthesized by organosilanes had a significant effect on the microstructure and morphology. CO, adsorption capacity of HP-ZSM-5 was up to 58.26 cm(3) g(-1) at 0 degrees C and 1 bar, significantly higher than that of the ZSM-5 sample. The effective improvement of CO2 adsorption performance mainly originated from the micro-/mesoporous composite structure and complex surface morphology, which can provide low -resistant pathways for CO2 through the porous network. Besides, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was carried out to study the adsorption process on adsorbents, and the results indicated that a faster physical adsorption process was achieved as a result of the introduction of mesopores.

Abstract:Porous carbons were synthesized from coconut shell using two step CO2 activation and their characteristics were investigated. Nitrogen adsorption test for Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area and pore volume of the adsorbent produced were carried out. The Langmuir surface area, BET surface area and pore volume of the synthesized carbon are 533 m2/g, 361 m2/g and 0.19 cm3/g respectively. Micropores are predominant constituting 88% of the total surface area. From the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, hydroxyls, alkenes, carbonyls and aromatics functional groups were identified. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results gives thermal analysis whereby moisture pyrolysis occurred at 105oC, the pyrolysis of hemicellulose and cellulose occurred at 160–390oC. However, lignin decomposition occurred in a wider temperature range (390-650oC). The proximate and ultimate analysis shows high percentage of carbon and less ash content which indicates a good precursor material for porous carbon.
Synthesis and characterization of polyphenylene sulfide resin-derived S-doped porous carbons for efficient CO 2 capture

Abstract:Porous carbons have long been studied for their capacity to capture CO 2 due to their enhanced textural characteristics and customizable surface decoration. However, developing porous carbons with significant CO 2 uptake capacity and strong CO 2 /N 2 selectivity is still a challenge. This study presents introducing sulfur (S) atoms into the porous carbon structure to increase CO 2 uptake using a pre-carbonized polyphenylene sulfide resin (PPS) via chemical activation. By adjusting KOH activator amount and activation temperature, various textural features and S contents were obtained, resulting in a strong adsorption effect for CO 2 . The optimal sample displayed CO 2 uptake of 3.64 and 5.13 mmol/g at 25 and 0 °C and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 19 due to the judicious heteroatom doping and optimal pore size distributions. The findings demonstrate the significant potential of PPS-derived porous carbon adsorbents for CO 2 adsorption, and the novel synthesis method provides new possibilities for the scalable production of CO 2 adsorbent.

Abstract:Chemisorption of CO2 by amine-based solid adsorbents is an effective approach to reduce the greenhouse effect. However, the scalable fabrication of excellent materials with superior CO2 adsorption capacity and outstanding cycle performance remains a big challenge. Here we demonstrate a unique architecture of macroscopic 3D porous graphene-like carbon nanosheets (3D-PGCNs) through a simple one-step carbonization of a mixture of melamine and natural soybean oil. The key feature of 3D-PGCNs is that the formed ultrathin graphene-like carbon nanosheets have crumpled morphology and 3D interconnected macropore structure, leading to a high pore volume (3.48 cm(3) g(-1)) with capable of loading large amount of amine species. As a result, the 3D hybrid (3D-PEI-PGCNs) impregnated with 40 wt% polyethyleneimine (PEI) exhibits a high CO2 adsorption capacity of 117 mg g(-1) at 75 degrees C with excellent cycling stability. This work provides a new strategy for the simple, cost-effective and scalable synthesis of efficient and stable CO2 capture sorbents. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Considering the rising environmental and efficiency concerns, the development of porous carbon via a surface decoration approach has received great attention for selectively adsorb CO2 from the flue gas. Herein, self-S-doped porous carbon was prepared from petroleum coke with high sulfur content (PHS) utilizing KOH as an activating agent. The effect of the activating temperatures and the KOH/PHS mass ratio on the physical feature and CO2 uptake performance of the as-synthesis porous carbons was fully examined. The optimal sample (PHS-650-3) presents the specific BET surface area and total pore volume of 1278 m2/g and 0.56 cm3/g, respectively. The PHS-650-3 sample displayed the maximum CO2 adsorption capacity of 4.18 and 5.57 mmol g−1 at 25 and 0 °C and 1 bar thanks to its enhanced textural characteristics and high amount of sulfur functionality on the surface. Last but not least, the as-synthesized S-doped porous carbon shows ideal adsorption solution theory (IAST) CO2/N2 selectivity of 21, fast adsorption kinetics, suitable heat of adsorption value and stable uptake capacity upon consecutive adsorption cycles, claiming its readily potential CO2 adsorption applications.

Abstract:Capturing and separating carbon dioxide, particularly using porous carbon adsorption separation technology, has received considerable research attention due to its advantages such as low cost and ease of regeneration. In this study, we successfully developed a one-step carbonization activation method using freeze-thaw pre-mix treatment to prepare high-nitrogen-content microporous nitrogen-doped carbon materials. These materials hold promise for capturing and separating CO 2 from complex gas mixtures, such as biogas. The nitrogen content of the prepared carbon adsorbents reaches as high as 13.08 wt%, and they exhibit excellent CO 2 adsorption performance under standard conditions (1 bar, 273 K/298 K), achieving 6.97 mmol/g and 3.77 mmol/g, respectively. Furthermore, according to Ideal Adsorption Solution Theory (IAST) analysis, these materials demonstrate material selectivity for CO 2 /CH 4 (10 v:90 v) and CO 2 /CH 4 (50 v:50 v) of 33.3 and 21.8, respectively, at 1 bar and 298 K. This study provides a promising CO 2 adsorption and separation adsorbent that can be used in the efficient purification process for carbon dioxide, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions in industrial and energy production, thus offering robust support for addressing climate change and achieving more environmentally friendly energy production and carbon capture goals.

Almond Skin Derived Porous Biocarbon Nanoarchitectonics with Tunable Micro and Mesoporosity for CO 2 Adsorption and Supercapacitors

Abstract:The careful selection of carbon precursors for chemical activation is critical in obtaining cost-effective and efficient porous activated biocarbons with multifunctional properties. Herein, we report on utilising almond skin to synthesize porous activated biocarbons via solid-state KOH activation. Through precise manipulation of the impregnation ratio of KOH to the non-porous carbon, a range of materials with intriguing properties including high surface area, large pore volume, tunable micro and mesopores, and surface functionalization with oxygen were synthesised. The optimized material ASPC5-4 displayed an extremely high surface area (3535 m 2 g -1 ), a large pore volume (1.9 cm 3 g -1 ), a high proportion of mesopores (96.5 %) and a notable surface oxygen content (6.93 wt %). These excellent features allowed ASPC5-4 to adsorb a record amount of CO 2 at 0 °C/30 bar (39.81 mmol g -1 ). Another material ASPC5-2 exhibited a high content of micropores and adsorbed 5.92 mmol g -1 of CO 2 at 0 °C/1 bar. ASPC5-4 also exhibited great potential as a supercapacitor electrode, displaying a high specific capacitance in both a three-electrode (354 F g -1 /0.5 A g -1 ) and two-electrode system (203 F g -1 /0.5 A g -1 ). It also demonstrated high power and energy densities of 638 W kg -1 and 47 W h kg -1 , respectively.

Abstract:Highly porous carbon adsorbent is much desired to diminish greenhouse effect caused by CO 2 emission and benefit for subsequent carbon cycle. Herein, a low-cost and environment-friendly carbonization strategy was reported for preparation of highly porous carbon derived from biomass. Such carbonization is a synergistic process with hydrothermal treatment coupled with a subsequent pyrolysis using sugarcane as biomass. The obtained hydrothermal-pyrolysis derived porous carbon (HPC) has a BET surface area of 938 m 2 /g, which is much higher than that of carbon produced through direct pyrolysis (PC, 528 m 2 /g). During the hydrothermal carbonization pretreatment, highly thermostable aromatic skeletons are formed and converted to carbon skeletons in the post-pyrolysis process, leading to formation of highly stable micropores and higher surface area. Further, HPC shows remarkable adsorption ability of CO 2 (2.8 mmol/g, 25 °C, 1 bar), higher than that of PC (2.1 mmol/g). In addition, the HPC exhibits high CO 2 /N 2 adsorption selectivity and recyclability, demonstrating its potential application in CO 2 capture. This work not only gives new light for tailoring carbon materials with highly porous structure but also provides novel adsorbent for CO 2 adsorption.

Biomass Based N/O Codoped Porous Carbons with Abundant Ultramicropores for Highly Selective CO2 Adsorption

Abstract:In this work, N/O codoped porous carbons (NOPCs) were derived from corn silk accompanied by Na2CO3 activation. The porous structures and surface chemical features of as-prepared carbon materials were tailored by adjusting the Na2CO3 mass ratio. After activation, the optimized sample (NOPC1) with abundant ultramicropores and pyrrolic N displays an enhanced CO2 adsorption capacity of 3.15 mmol g−1 and 1.95 mmol g−1 at 273 K and 298 K at 1 bar, respectively. Moreover, this sample also exhibited high IAST selectivity (16.9) and Henry's law selectivity (15.6) for CO2/N2 at 298 K as well as moderate heat adsorption. Significantly, the joint effect between ultramicropore structure and pyrrolic N content was found to govern the CO2 adsorption performance of NOPCs samples.

Synthesis and characterization of advanced bio-carbon materials from Kraft lignin with enhanced CO2 capture properties

Abstract:Biomass-derived porous carbons have received enormous attention for CO2 capture in post-combustion scenarios owing to their wide availability, excellent physicochemical stability, and cost-effective preparation. Here, a series of advanced bio-carbon materials were successfully prepared by using the underutilized industrial by-product Kraft lignin as precursor via a facile chemical activation process. Both the textural and surface properties of the bio-carbons were found to be highly tailorable by tuning the activation temperature, KOH/lignin ratio and pre-oxidation treatment. It was found that the Kraft lignin-derived carbons were exceedingly ultra-microporous with ultra-microporosity accounting for up to 92% of total micropores, while the carbons prepared with pre-oxidation treatment were uniquely characterised by distinctive hierarchical micro-mesoporous structures. Applying the Kraft lignin-derived carbons for CO2 adsorption demonstrates that at a CO2 partial pressure of 15 kPa, rarely obtainable CO2 adsorption capacities of 3.29 mmol/g at 0 °C and 2.01 mmol/g at 25 °C were achieved for the carbon prepared at 600 °C. Advanced characterizations confirm that the unique desirable combination of textural properties and surface chemistry, which favours the intercalation of potassium in the form of surface extra-framework K+ ions, underpinned the extraordinary CO2 adsorption performance and high CO2/N2 selectivity (up to 38) of the prepared carbons especially at low CO2 partial pressures. The results indicate that the unique three-dimensional aromatic structures of the lignin provide the matrix for the liable development of the well-defined ultra-microporosity at high levels. Our work provided a promising strategy for valorization of Kraft lignin as a precursor for producing advanced carbon materials.

Abstract:The effective and selective capture of CO 2 through the rational design of microstructures and the synthesis of carbon materials with enriched surface functionality is of utmost importance in mitigating CO 2 emissions. In this study, we successfully prepared a novel type of S-doped porous carbon material with a high surface area and a significant volume of micropores in a straightforward manner. This was achieved by pyrolyzing carbonized coconut shells (CS) with potassium thiosulfate K 2 S 2 O 3 (PT) as an activating and sulfur supply agent. By adjusting the pyrolysis temperature within the range of 650–750 °C, we obtained carbon materials with varying surface areas (887–1924 m 2 /g), pore volumes (0.35–0.95 cm 3 g −1 ), and a homogeneous distribution of sulfur content (up to 12.26 wt%) within the carbon framework. The optimal S-doped porous carbon demonstrated the adsorption capacities of 3.59 mmol g −1 at 25 °C and 5.31 mmol g −1 at 0 °C under 1 bar. Additionally, the prepared sorbent exhibited favorable CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, high isosteric heat, and stable cycling performance. These excellent CO 2 capture properties can be attributed to the materials' high microporosity and well-dispersed sulfur functionality in the carbon framework. Collectively, these findings highlight the potential of these novel carbon materials with heteroatom doping as efficient adsorbents for the selective capture of CO 2 , presenting a viable solution in the quest for effective CO 2 mitigation.

Abstract:Porous carbons were synthesized from coconut shell using chemical activation by potassium hydroxide (KOH). N2 adsorption isotherm analysis for BET surface area and pore volume of the synthesized porous carbon were carried out. The Langmuir surface area, BET surface area and pore volume are 1646 m2/g, 1353 m2/g and 0.6 cm3/g, respectively. From the FTIR analysis, hydroxyls, alkenes, carbonyls and aromatics functional groups were identified. The proximate and ultimate analysis shows high percentage of carbon and less ash content which indicates a good precursor material for porous carbon. The carbonization temperature and time were also varied to observe their effect on the yield of char, with carbonization at 7000C for 2 h having highest yield of 32%.

Abstract:Metal-functionalized porous carbons derived from microporous organic polymers remain highly desired for their intriguing physical and chemical properties. Currently, their preparation still suffers from tedious and costly synthetic procedures. Herein, we report a one-step in situ method for preparing metal-functionalized porous carbons via directly pyrolyzing a mixture of metal salts and a pre-designed microporous organic polymer. The as-made carbons exhibited significantly improved surface areas (up to 1886 m(2) g(-1)) and an exceptionally high CO2 adsorption capacity (up to 25.9 wt% at 273 K/1.0 bar) when compared to their analogs (1100 m(2) g(-1), 13.8 wt%) prepared through a conventional post-blending method. The metal-functionalized porous carbons could serve as efficient catalysts for converting CO2 into cyclic carbonates with a yield of up to 99% at 25 degrees C and 0.1 MPa, surpassing the analog carbon (54%) and most known porous catalysts. These results imply that in situ embedding metal active sites into porous carbons would offer a potential prospect for the efficient structural and functional design of high-performance catalyst systems.
