Abstract:Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is commonly used in the water-lubricated bearings, but it has poor wear resistance in the conditions of low speed and heavy load. For improving the tribological properties of UHMWPE, UHMWPE was modified by graphene oxide (GO) with three different functional groups, epoxy group (-O-), hydroxyl group (-OH), and carboxyl group (-COOH), respectively. The mechanical and tribological properties of the composites were studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The effects of GO on UHMWPE were explored by analyzing the interface concentration, interface velocity, mean square displacement, binding energy, and van der Waals energy during the friction process. Additionally, impact mechanisms of three spatial orientations (0 °, 45 °, 90 °) of graphene on the frictional characteristics of composites were investigated from the perspective of energy conversion. The results demonstrated that both graphene and differently functionalized graphene could enhance mechanical and wear-resistance properties of UHMWPE. Among them, the carboxyl (-COOH) functionalized graphene had a good modification role. In addition, the UHMWPE were filled with graphene oriented at 90 ° to exhibit good thermal conductivity and stable structure. Compared to pure UHMWPE, the wear rate of UHMWPE with 90 ° graphene was reduced to 97.29 %.
